Abstract

In dynamic analysis of floating structures, the designer needs to know the wave forces due to incident and scattered waves on the structure. In this work, the flow field around the body is solved based on the potential theory with considering the free surface and sea bed effects. Using this theory, the wave forces exerted on two typical sea buoys with spherical and disc-type bodies are determined. Comparison of these results with the one obtained using Haskind method shows good accuracy of the present method.

Abstract

An approximate numerical mthod is presented for analysis and determination of modal characteristics in straight, pretwisted non-unifom helicopter blades. The analysis considers the coupled flapwise bending (out of plane), chordwise bending (in plane), and torsion vibration of both rotating and non-rotating blades. The proposed method is based on the integral expansion of Green functions (structural influence functions) to develop the equations of motion for a clamped-free blade. Several examples are presented in various states such as flapwise bending, coupled bending-bending, coupled bending-torsion, and coupled bending-bending-torsion vibration analysis. The results obtained were compared with available numerical results in the literature. A modal testing and modal analysis were also carried out on a typical helicopter blade in static condition and the results were compared with the numerical ones. The results indicate that the proposed method is fast and robust and can be used for modeling of turbomachine blades, aircraft propellers and helicopter rotor blades.

Abstract

Sodium molybdate (Na2MoO4) as a grain refiner was used to refine the microstructure of Al-0.7Fe alloy. Al-Fe samples with the addition of 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 wt.% sodium molybdate were fabricated by casting in sand molds at 750 ͦC. The microstructures of the as-cast samples were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the present phases were revealed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The effect of sodium molybdate on the microstructure was examined by measuring the average grain sizes of the alloys, determining the widths of intermetallic compounds and carrying out hardness and tensile tests. The results showed that the addition of sodium molybdate modified the microstructure of Al-Fe alloy by reducing the average grain sizes. Also, it was found that the optimum amount of sodium molybdate to add to Al-0.7Fe alloy melt was 0.3 wt.% in this study.

Abstract

Ternary (%mol) (64SiO2-31CaO-5P2O5) system of sol-gel derived bioactive glass fibers was prepared by electrospinning method. X-ray Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and nitrogen adsorption test (BET) analyses were performed to investigate the phase and chemical group of the composition, morphology of the surface and specific surface area of the fibers, respectively. SEM observations confirmed that the fibers were nano size. The amorphous nature and the presence of silanol groups in the composition were confirmed by XRD and FTIR, respectively. Apatite formation and biodegradability of the fibers were studied using various analyses after different days of soaking in simulated body fluid (SBF). The results affirmed the presence of apatite layers on the surface of the fibers. Cell culture evaluation indicated that MG-64 human osteoblast-like cells were attached and spread well on the surface. Furthermore, cell viability and cell growth demonstrated that the cells were grown and reproduced well on the fibers.

Abstract

Al-Zn-Mg/3 wt-% Al2O3 nanostructured composite powder was synthesized through Mechanical Alloying (MA). At first, the 7014 alloy matrix constituents were milled in a planetary ball mill for 20 hours. Then, 3 wt.% µ-Al2O3 particles were  added to the pre-milled matrix and the nanostructured composite powder was produced at different MA times to investigate the effects of MA time on the characteristics of the produced composite powders such as morphology, crystallite size, lattice strain and microhardness. The characterization results proved that synthesizing nanostructured composite powder with a low amount of micrometric reinforcements in addition to pre-milled micrometric matrix is possible. Also, synthesis of the nanostructured composite powder with the minimum crystallite size of 24 nm and the minimum mean particle size of 5 µm was confirmed. Moreover, the steady state occurred after around 20 hours milling and further milling did not affect the powder characteristics excluding crystallite size, lattice strain and microhardness. In addition, sinterability of the composite powders increased with increasing the milling time due to decreased average particle size. However, after the steady state, the sinterability did not change.

Abstract

The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of temperature, time, pH, capping agent concentration (mercaptoacetic acid), Zn to Se and Se to reducing agent (NaBH4) mole ratios on morphology, phase developments and size of zinc selenide nanoparticles prepared by hydrothermal method. Characterization of zinc selenide nanoparticles was performed by Field Emission Electron Microscopy (FESEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (EDS), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Induced Coupled Plasma Spectrometry (ICP), Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Simultaneous Thermal Analysis (STA). The results of EDS showed that the ratio of atomic percentage of Zn to Se in the optimized zinc selenide nanoparticles is 1: 1 and elements are evenly distributed in the nanoparticles. Based on the results of FTIR and STA thermal analyses, MAA as the stabilizing agent binds to and stabilizes zinc selenide nanoparticles. Finally, fine nanoparticles of zinc selenide with narrow size distribution, spherical shape and cubic crystal structure were obtained at the minimum temperature (130 °C) and processing time (15 hours) with the least amount of reducing and capping agents compared to previous researches.

Abstract

In this research, effect of B and Si addition on the structural and magnetic properties of AlCoCrMnNi high-entropy alloys was investigated. The structural and magnetic properties of AlCoCrMnNiX(X= B, Si) alloys were studied by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). First, the constituent components of the AlCoCrMnNiX (X=B, Si) alloys were mixed for 10 hours. XRD analysis revealed that  the solid solution was not formed by mixing. The alloys were then annealed at 900 ˚C for 10 hours. XRD results revealed formation of a solid solution with BCC structure in AlCoCrMnNi and AlCoCrMnNiB alloys. For AlCoCrMnNiSi and AlCoCrMnNiSiB alloys, Ni2Si and Cr2Si3 intermetallics were formed in addition to the solid solution with BCC structure. VSM results suggested that while forming the solid solution for AlCoCrMnNi alloy, soft magnetic properties improved so that magnetic saturation and coercivity increased from 40.22 to 64.46 emu/g, and from 180.143 to 14.09 Oe, respectively.

Abstract

In this study, Al/Al2O3 composite was produced by accumulative roll bonding (ARB) process coupled with the plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) process. The alumina was grown on Al sheets by electrolyte technique with three different thicknesses (10, 20, and 40 µm). The results showed that incorporation of alumina up to 3.22 vol.% in aluminum matrix enhanced the yield and tensile strength of the composite, whereas increasing the amount of alumina up to 6.25 vol.% deteriorated the tensile properties. In the last part, a serial sectioning process was employed to develop a three-dimensional (3D) representation of the microstructure of Al2O3 particles reinforced Al composite for visualization and finite-element modeling (FEM).

Abstract

The present research has examined the effect of adding Si3N4 on the mechanical and structural properties of NiCrAlY alloy. The structural and mechanical properties of the manufactured samples were characterized by SEM, XRD,  micro-hardness evaluation and pin on disk wear test. Various concentrations of Si3N4 powder (1, 3, and 5 wt.%) were mixed with NiCrAlY powder using a mechanical ball mill. Next, the mixtures were sintered at 1100 °C using the spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique. The XRD patterns indicated that the samples were composed of two phases of solid solution γ-Ni(Cr) and intermetallic compounds β-NiAl. The results of micro-hardness measurements showed that adding 1% Si3N4 to NiCrAlY enhanced the hardness from 418 to 614 HV. However, with an increase in the Si3N4 content from 1 to 5 wt%, the hardness diminished from 614 to 543 HV, and by Adding Si3N4 to the NiCrAlY, its tribological properties were significantly improved.
