Abstract
Experience has shown that all centralized planning, policy-making and decision-making which presuppose exclusion of public participation have never been successful in achieving their objectives. The goal of this research is to determine the driving and preventive factors of herders’ participation in rehabilitation designs of Aghghala ranges in Gorgan Province. The research method was direct observation in which measurement techniques were used. A questionnaire was used to divide the sample society into two categories: the experts who design the range management system, and the local herders.
Results obtained from this investigation showed that according to the experts training, economic, planning and social parameters have the greatest effects on local herders’ participation while the herders maintained that planning, economic, training and social parameters have the greatest effect on decreasing their participation.

Abstract
This manuscript shows the findings of a research that investigated the effects of trainings on the members and the employees of the poultry cooperatives in Tehran Province on the performance of these cooperatives. To analyze the data, 2, correlation coefficient, one way-analysis of variance, and Duncan Test were used. The results of the study showed a positive and statistically significant relationship between training of members and performance of cooperatives. The more the trainings were related to type of occupation or responsibility, the larger were the effects on the cooperative performance. Cooperatives with more specialized top managers, offered more training to their members. Compared to cooperatives with more training, the members had less participation in increasing their investment.

Abstract
A number of halophytic species as Salicornia europea, Halocnemum strobilaceum, Aeluropus lagopoides, and Aeluropus littoralis were found to occupy a significant portion of the total vegetation of the surrounding area at the Zayande-Roud inlet to Gavkhoony wetland. However, their ecological demands and bioenvironmental factors by which vegetation community composition has been affected is not undestood. A compehensive knowledge of the establishment is essential for future improvements in using the above species on salanized regions. In this paper, using the ordination method. The establishment pattern of these four species in a range of varied habitats is evaluated based on the recongition of the relative significance of habitat soil chemical properties and vegetion crown cover to the establishment of the four species. For this purpose, 48 plants meansurements were taken along a transect, having more species variation in term of vegetation cover percentage. Furthermore, 48 soil samples were taken from the plot along the same transect in a one-year period in 1999. The soil samples were analysed for PH, EC, available Na, K, Ca and Mg as well as clay, and silt contents. The ground and field vegetation data were analysed using the Principlas Components Analysis (PCA), and Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) to produce summary vectors (PCA axes) of both the soil chemistry and habitat vegetation structure datasets. The summary of ordination method quantified the degree to which soil variables and species cover were related to variability in ground vegetation composition. variation in community composition (type and percentage) was significantly related to gradient of the aforementioned soil factors. Generally, the vegatation community composition in this experiment could be considered as a key component to expand the growth and development patterns of these species to similar salinised regions.

Abstract
In quantitative land suitability evaluation, economic aspects land evaluation such as impact of environmental physical factors on crop production and the amount of yield per surface unit are considered. The purpose of this research was to study quantitative land suitability of northern Baraan area located in eastern Isfahan. The study was a continuation of the previously accomplished qualitative land suitability evaluation of the area. The economic studies include economic data collection, matching inputs and outputs and gross margins analysis.
Radiation-thermal production potential of the crops was calculated based on plant physiology and temperature (FAO model), which was 10.45, 10.11, 13.64 and 11.93 ton/ha for wheat, barley, maize and rice, respectively. Radiation-thermal production potential, observed and marginal yields and the results of the qualitative land evaluation were used to perform quantitative land evalution and to determine the corresponding suitability classes. The predicted yield in different land units varies between 1.64 and 9.17 ton/ha for wheat, 1.81 and 9 ton/ha for barley, 2.06 and 9.42 ton/ha for maize and 2.35 and 7.14 ton/ha for rice. Presence of significant statistical correlation between the observed and the predicted yield values reveals the validity of the evaluation methods used. The results from quantitative land evaluation show that most of the land units are slightly to moderately suitable for wheat, barley, maize and rice, while a few are not. The best land utilization type in each land unit can be selected through a combined consideration of quantitative land evaluation results, benefitability of each land unit and impact of the land use on the soil. Rice cultivation is not recommended in the study area, because of its adverse effect on soil physical properties and soil drainage.

Abstract
In this study, the potential use of halophyte grasses, Aleuropus littoralis and A. lagopoides, on soil desalinization and lowering soil salinity was investigated under glasshouse conditions. The seeds of two species were collected from Rodasht area in Isfahan and grown with four salinity treatments obtained from different types of collected soils and replicated three times. Electrical conductivities of the four soil treatments were 12.4, 29.5, 43, and 69 dS/m. The results of mean comparison showed that shoot and root dry weight, sodium contents of dry weight and Na/K ratio were significantly different in both salinized species. Both species effectively reduced soil electrical conductivity by 23 to 42.5%. This was mainly due to ion absorbtion, and consequently, from Na+, Cl-, Mg2+, Ca2+ ionic reduction. In general, considerable amounts of ionic absorbtion and total soluble salt secretion through their salt glands appeared to have the most pronounced effects on decreasing soil salinity. Regarding 50% salt excretion by these species, growing these grasses could be a possible way to decrease soil salinity by grazing or harvesting salt crusted foliage from the site.

Abstract
The general goal of this research was to study the effective factors on the success of the poultry-farm cooperatives in Isfahan province. Based on multi-stage cluster sampling and Chocran formulas, nine cooperatives and 173 members were selected from 15 cooperatives with 1768 members. After completion of questionnaires, the AHP method was employed for scaling. Statistical tests (factor analysis and alpha coefficient) indicated that this research has a high construction validity and reliability. The research results indicated that cooperative functions toward fulfillment of members' demands were weak. The results of the path model indicated that effective factors on the success of cooperatives (from highest to the lowest) are: knowledge of cooperative principles by the members, extra-organizational factors, education quality, managers' skills, participation in cooperative affairs, and members' education level. Also, the success of cooperatives much relies on inter-organizational factors. The amount of members' share from education, participation in cooperative's affairs, the managers' specialty and skills, and knowledge of cooperatives' principles are very weak. Research results indicated that there is a direct and statistically significant correlation between these independent variables and the success of cooperatives in Isfahan province.

Abstract
The masculinization effects of 17α-methyltestosterone were investigated on the two developmental stages of guppy (Poecilia reticulate), namely, newly born fry and gravid females. The first group was treated with two doses of androgen, (30 and 60 mg/kg food), each for a period of 15 and 30 days and the second group (gravid females) was treated with the food doses of 400, 450 & 500 mg/kg in a 10 day duration prior to parturition. After three months, the first group masculinization ratio of 62.14% was attained only in 60 mg/kg at three-day long treatment and other treatments had no significant effect on masculinization. In this group all the treated fish developed male secondary sexual characteristics after 3 or 4 weeks. However, the above-mentioned characteristics disappeared gradually when hormone therapy was stopped. In the second group, all the treatments were significantly different from control group. 450 and 500 mg/kg treatments had the highest masculinization percentage (90.82 and 97.07, respectively) but the differences were not significant. Also there were 9.18% females in 450 mg/kg treatment and 2.93% intersex in 500 mg/kg treatment. But the so-called group mortality was higher and fecundity lower than those in the control group. Finally, it should be noted that hormonal treatment had not any significant effect on masculinization of newly born fry and with the regard to the effect of 450 mg/kg treatment on masculinization and mortality percentage, it can be introduced as the best treatment.

Abstract
Heavy metals including cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) are entering agricultural soils from different routes and mainly due to human activities. Accumulated Cd and Pb in the soil would eventually enter the human and animal food chains and pose threat to their health. Therefore, evaluating heavy metal accumulation is necessary to prevent soil and environmental pollutions and should be considered by researchers as well as policy makers. This study was conducted to model the accumulation rates of Cd and Pb in the agro-ecosystems of Isfahan, Mobarakeh, Lenjan, Borkhar, Najafabad, Khomeinishahr and Felavarjan. Cadmium and lead accumulation rates in the agro-ecosystems were computed using a stochastic mass balance model which uses Latin Hypercube sampling in combination with Monte-Carlo simulation procedure. Agricultural information including crop types, crop area and yield, the type and the number of livestock, application rate of mineral fertilizers, compost and sewage sludge and also metal concentration in plant and amendments were used to quantify Cd and Pb accumulation rates. Modeling Cd and Pb accumulation rates indicated that the metals are accumulating in the agricultural lands in the studied townships. The largest Cd (18 g ha-1 yr-1) and Pb (260 g ha-1 yr-1) accumulation rates were found in the township of Isfahan but the minimum accumulation rates were found in township of Lenjan for Cd (3 g ha-1 yr-1) and Mobarakeh for Pb (10 g ha-1 yr-1). The major input route to agricultural soils is phosphate fertilizers for Cd but for Pb is manure on the regional scale. High application rates of sewage sludge and compost in agricultural lands in the township of Isfahan could result in considerable amounts of Cd and Pb entering the soils of this region.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess characteristics of and reasons for farmers’ disagreement on implementation of land consolidation projects. Part of needed information was collected through questionnaire and interviewing 75 farmers in 6 unsuccessful villages in Kermanshah and Lenjanat region and also visiting some performed and ongoing projects. Other part of information was obtained by questionnaire and interviewing 44 experts involved with performing the project in Jahad Agricultural offices. Fragmentation of properties were measured by Januszewski fragmentation coefficient. Correlation coefficient and comparison of mean were used to analyzed the information. The results showed that disagreement of farmers is the most important obstacle for progress on land consolidatin projects, which accounted for farmers. In Lanjanat, these farmers have a better land structures in respect to size and fragmentation of parcels. In both rejoin reasons for farmer’s disagreement are divided in three groups: logical-justified reasons, logical-unjustified and illogical. Mediation, preference and legislative force are the three interactive methods to satisfy these farmers. To decrease disagreements and promote land consolidation in the two regions, following suggestions are offered: education and extension, correcting the technical and adminestrative methods of land consolidation and legal and judicial supports to implement the projects.

Abstract
The purpose of this research was to study factors on farmer’s request to land consolidation projects and also consolidation’ adventages in utilization units. The data of this study was collected through completing questionnaires and interviewing 34 experts connected with administrating of land consolidation projects in agricultural offices and service centers in Kermanshah township and Lenjanat region in Isfahan. Data was also collected through visiting some performed and performing projects. The results showed that in Kermanshah land consolidation improves the technology, farm management and land more than other production factors. In Lenjanat it improves technology and farm management in comparison with other factors. In both regions the aplicant villages of the projects have a larger ownership and more fragmentaed parcels than other villages. Moreover they have younger exploiters, more educated and less in number. It is also notworthy that these regions obtain more extention education, are nearer to agricultural offices, and have closer relation with extention agents.

Abstract
Extension of cultivation areas becomes gradually impossible due to ever-increasing population growth and urban area development in Iran. Therefore, it is very important to use the existing cultivated lands more efficiently. Land suitability evaluation makes the sustainable use of the lands feasible. The objective of this study was qualitative, quantitative and economic suitability evaluation of irrigated croplands for wheat, maize and sesame in Mehran plain, Ilam Province. Soil survey in the field, laboratory analysis of the soil samples, qualitative, quantitative and economic evaluation were different successive stages of this research. In qualitative evaluation, climatic, topographic and soil suitability classes were determined according to the degree of the matching with plant requirements, by parametric (square root) method. Quantitative and economic evaluations were done based on observed, potential and marginal yield analysis. Results of the qualitative land evaluation showed that most of the land units were classified moderately suitable for given crops because of soil limitations. Qualitatively, most of the land units were classified in the same classes as, or in lower classes than quantitative suitability classes for wheat and maize production, due to high management level at the farms. Whereas quantitative classes of sesame were determined lower than qualitative classes induced by low management level for this crop. Economic land suitability classification showed that the wheat production was the most economic land utilization type. Results of the economic assessment suggested that the cultivation of wheat in rotation with sesame would produce the most income for different units and could be increased in future using improvement in management level in the study area for sesame cultivation.

Abstract
In order to study the effect of planting dates and genistein on nitrogen content and nodulation of three annual Medicago species (Medicago polymorpha cv. Santiago M. rigidula cv. Ragidula, and M. radiata cv. Radiata), an experimental study was conducted during 2004-2005 on the Research Farm of Faculty of Agriculture, Tarbiat Modares University, Tehran (35°43′N and 51°8′E). The factors were arranged as split-split plot in a randomized complete block design with four replications. Planting dates (February 20, March 1 and 11) were randomized to main plots and three annual medics were located in sub-plots, and genistein (0 and 20 μM) was randomized to sub-sub-plot units. Plant nitrogen contnt, nodulation and other traits were significantly different in species and M. polymorpha was better than other species in view of dry nodule weight, nodule number, nodule number in each cluster, nodule cluster number and nodule diameter. Medicago rigidula had more resistance to cold than other varieties, and its forage yield and nitrogen percentage were better than M. polymorpha. Therefore, M. rigidula may be better suited for cold zones. Twenty μmol genistein had remarkable effect on nodulation and nitrogen percentage of annual medics in comparison with control. The result showed that genistein modified negative effect of low temperature environment on nodulation and nitrogen percentage of annual medics. Nodulation and nitrogen percentage increased in all varieties at the first planting date. This finding emphasizes that genistein has a considerable effect on cold resistance establishment in varieties for improving nodulation and increasing plant nitrogen percentage in farm condition.

Abstract
In order to investigate the relationship among seed yield and its components in safflower, path and factor analysis were conducted using the agronomic and morphological traits of 32 genotypes. Genotypes were evaluated on the Research Farm of Isfahan University of Technology, using a randomized complete block design with three replications. The correlation coefficients showed that number of seeds per capitula and number of capitula per plant had the highest positive correlation with both seed yield and seed yield per plant. The results of regression analysis showed that number of capitula per plant explained 43.6%, and along with seeds per capitula and plant height 60% of the phenotypic variations for seed yield. The regression analysis for seed yield per plant also revealed that seeds per capitula, capitula per plant and seed weight in order had more contributions to the variation of seed yield per plant and explained 81.2% of its variation. Path analysis showed that capitula per plant had the most direct positive effect on both seed yield and seed yield per plant however, this effect was decreased by the indirect and negative effect of seed weight. Results of factor analysis recognized 3 main factors which explained 81.81 % of total variation of the data. These factors were named the seed yield and its components, phenological traits and branching. In general, it can be concluded that seeds per capitula, capitula per plant and seed weight in order contributed more to the seed yield of safflower genotypes. In conclusion, these yield components can be used as selection criteria in breeding programs.

Abstract
The effects of irrigation, dry farming and drought treatments on the activities of antioxidant enzymes including superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, catalase and peroxidase in barley leaves at different generative growth stages under field conditions were investigated. Three senescence parameters including chlorophyll, total soluble protein and rubisco large subunit protein loss, were also studied in order to compare our results to those reported by other researchers. The results showed that leaf relative water content (RWC), chlorophyll and total soluble protein and rubisco large subunit protein content declined with leaf age and the effect of water deficit. The activity of superoxide dismutase declined with the progress of the leaf age on all treatments but ascorbate peroxidase activity declined with leaf age only in irrigated (control) plants. There were no significant differences among developmental stages in catalase activity in control plants, while catalase activity declined in the water dry farming and drought stress conditions. Peroxidase activity increased with the progress of senescence for all of treatments in such conditions. Water deficit stress triggered increases in antioxidant enzymes activities. Results showed that among all studied enzymes, peroxidase has a key role in increasing resistance to oxidative stress on both the senescence stages and drought stress condition in Hordeum vulgare.

Abstract
The main purpose of this research is to study the success of rural cooperative companies and evaluate different factors which may influence such a success. For this purpose, sample companies were randomly selected based on multistage and stratification sampling with proportional allocation method,. Finally, 18 rural co-operative companies were studied using questionnaires filled out by 328 ordinary members and 93 members of board of directors and managers of these rural co-operative companies. Inter-organization and intra-organization and structure variables which affected the companies performance and achievement were studied. The findings showed poor performance of these companies. According to the current research, some variables such as membership experience, co-operative structure, co-operative investment, enhancement of member share, education, participation and level of training, awareness (ability) of members have a direct influence on companies' success. The other factors involving function of rural co-operative organization, use of managers’ misuses and abuses in co-operatives have a direct, but negative influence. Share mean value of each member, management experience knowledge and age of people have also indirect positive effect on success and the size has indirect negative influence on co-operative companies .

Abstract
The Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO) known as the dominant mode of tropical and extratropical intraseasonal variability has an important role in the coupled ocean-atmosphere system. This study investigates the eastward propagation of the MJO and its impact on monthly (February-April) maximum and minimum precipitation in Fars Province. The positive and negative phases of MJO were categorized for the period 1979-2002. The maximum and minimum values of monthly precipitation was then determined for each phase as well as for the entire length of records. The given results have indicated that, in February, both maximum and minimum precipitation during negative phase were significantly greater than the corresponding values during the positive phase. This implies that the enhanced February precipitation and flood events are associated to the negative MJO phase. On the other hand, severe water shotage in February was linked with prevalence of the positive phase. The results for April were mostly found to be similar to February except that minimum precipitation was not significantly associated to the positive phase. In contrast to February, minimum monthly precipitation in March was found to coincide with the negative MJO phase. Maximum precipitation, however, could coincide with neither of extreme phases of MJO.

Abstract
In order to study the effect of air and root-zone temperature on yield, yield components, nodulation and nitrogen fixation of three annual medics, an experiment was conducted in controlled environment (growth chamber) at the Faculty of Agriculture, Tarbiat Modares University in 2006. The experiment was performed as a spilt split plot with the layout of completely randomized design with three replications. Air temperature at three levels including 15/10, 20/15 and 25/20ºC day/night, four levels of root-zone temperatures including 5, 10, 15 and 20ºC and three annual medics (Medicago polymorpha, M. radiata and M. rigidula) were randomized to main plot, sub plot and sub sub plot units, respectively. The results showed that there were significant differences among annual medics for dry matter production, yield components and nitrogen fixation. M. rigidula produced more leaves, stems and root dry matter, leaf and stem to root ratio, leaf number and area and forage yield than other annual medics. Also, three annual medics at 25/20ºC day/night air temperature (the highest one) produced more nodulation dry matter (8.85 mg/pot) and nitrogen fixation (7.7 mg/g dry matter) than other temperatures. Plants at the former temperature produced 8 and 2 times more nodulation and nitrogen fixation than 15/10ºC day/night air temperature (the lowest one), respectively. Low root-zone temperature up to 5ºC had severely negative effect on yield and nitrogen fixation in the three studied annual medics. Interaction among annual medics, air and root-zone temperatures showed that M. rigidula was better than other annual medics for yield, nodulation and nitrogen fixation at 25ºC air temperature and 15ºC root-zone temperature . The result showed that M. rigidula had normal growth and development compared with other annual medics at low root-zone temperatures. Thus, M. rigidula may be a better annual medic for cultivation in cold and moderate regions. Therefore, in the zones where soil temperature is lower than 5ºC during the season, cultivation of annual medics is not successful, but in the zones where soil temperature is greater than 10ºC, annual medics have normal growth and produce average yield due to better nitrogen fixation.

Abstract
The Madden Julian oscillation (MJO) is known as the primary mode of large-scale inter-seasonal variability in tropical regions, affectimg equatorial and sub-tropical climates. This study investigated the effects of the MJO on the occurrence of wet and dry spells in Fars province, central southern part of Iran, during November-April. Monthly precipitation data of nine stations spread over various parts of the province was analyzed during 1979-2005. Using two well-known MJO indices: MK and WH, the positive and negative phases of the MJO phases (enhanced and suppressed convective activity over the equatorial Indonesian region, respectively) were identified for monthly and seasonal scales. Precipitation-MJO composites were then constructed for the opposite phases. It was shown that for all the considered stations, seasonal precipitation during negative MJO phase was significantly greater (from about 2.5 to 6.0 folds) than the corresponding values during the positive phase. Moreover, the applied statistical tests proved that the frequency of wet or dry events was related to the prevalence of negative or positive MJO phase, respectively. As the positive MJO phase was engulfed, the probability of dry events varied from 60% to 84%. On the other hand, the probability of wet events was found to vary from 60% to 76% during the MJO negative phase.
