Abstract
Physicochemical characteristics of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) are very important for storage and processing qualities. The amount of reducing sugars (glucose and fructose) and organic acids at harvest, during and after storage is the most important factor. In this study, three potato cultivars (Moran, Marfona and Agria) were collected, dry cleaned and graded into three sizes. They were analyzed for specific gravity and dry matter content. Potato tubers were stored at 4°C and about 85% R. H. for 15 weeks and then reconditioned at room temperature (25±l)°C for 4 weeks. During the storage period of tubers, sugars (sucrose, glucose and fructose) were analyzed on a weekly basis, but citric, D-malic and D-pyroglutamic were analyzed on a monthly basis by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Data were analyzed statistically in a completely randomized design with sampling and Duncans multiple range test.
The total sugar and organic acid contents of tubers significantly increased during the 15 weeks of storage at 4°C and decreased after reconditioning at room temperature. The size of tubers did not affect the accumulation of total sugars. Dry matter content and specific gravity of Agria tubers were higher than those of both Moran and Marfona. Also accumulation of reducing sugars was lower in Agria than in Moran and Morfona initially and after the storage and reconditioning periods. Therefore, Agria must be suitable for processing into chips or dry powder.

Abstract
Effect of nitrogen (N) fertilizer levels and its split applications on yield and yield components of rice (Oryza sativa L.) Cv. Khazar was investigated in a completely randomized block design with 3 replications in a paddy light soil at Guilan province, Iran, 2003. In this experiment, six treatments including: T1-control (no N fertilizer) T2- 40 kg/ha N (at transplanting time) T3- 80 kg/ha N (at transplanting, and tillering times) T4- 80 kg/ha N (at transplanting, tillering, and panicle initiation times) T5- 120 kg/ha N (at transplanting, and tillering times) and T6- 120 kg/ha N (at transplanting, tillering, and panicle initiation times) were compared. Results showed that the highest fertile tiller number was obtained in the fifth and sixth treatments with double and triple split applications of 120 kg/h N (236 and 248 m-2). The highest fertile filled spikelets percentage (84.8%), 1000-grain weight (26.1 g) and grain yield (4.83 t/ha) belonged to the sixth treatment, but grain yield and 1000-grain weight were not significantly differerent in the fourth and sixth treatments with three fertilizing times. This finding may have resulted from the third topdressing application of nitrogen fertilizer in panicle initiation and higher leaf area (44.8 and 45.5 Cm2), leaf greenness (39.4 and 39.9) and leaf nitrogen concentration (31.2 and 33.6 g/kg) during grain filling in the fourth and sixth treatments. Regression analysis also showed that flag leaf greenness (SPAD values at 5 days after flowering) and flag leaf area accounted for about 75% and 78% changes in yield, respectively. In conclusion, triple split application of 80 kgN/ha could be suggested for rice Cv. Khazar in these regions since the yield would be the same as the application of 120Kg/ha N.

Abstract
Application of selection index for screening desired plants based on complex quantitative traits can be more effective than direct selection. This study was conducted using an F2 rice population consisting of 87 plants derived from a cross between two cultivars Gharib and IR28. The purpose was to establish suitable selection indices for increasing yield and its related traits in research farm of Rice Research Institute of Iran (RRII), Rasht, in 2005. Studied traits included the days from sowing, germinated grain to maturity (MD), plant height (PH), panicle length (PL), flag leaf length (FL), flag leaf width (FW), number of panicles per plant (PP), number of grains per panicle (GP), number of spikelets per panicle (SP), 100-grain weight (GW), grain yield per plant (GY), biomass (BM), harvest index (HI), grain length (GL) and grain breadth (GB). Among the studied traits, 100-grain weight (GW), biomass (BM) and harvest index (HI) (0.99) and flag leaf width (FW) (0.35) showed the highest and lowest broad-sense heritability, respectively. Path coefficient analysis revealed that BM, HI, GP had positive direct effects on GY. Calculation of five different selection indices based on optimum and base indices indicated that selection for BM, HI and GP using genotypic path coefficients and their heritability as economic values would be a suitable selection criterion for improving population. Moreover, this study showed that both optimum and base indices show the same genetic progress for the studied traits. Since evaluation of base index, is much easier than the optimum index, it is highly recommended.

Abstract
Variations in theaflavin and thearubigin content during fermentation and the effects of these variations on brightness and total color in black tea were evaluated at the Tea Research Center in Lahijan in the year 2004. Percentages of theaflavin (TF), thearubigin (TR), total color and brightness were determined in two clones 100 and in the natural Chinese hybrid during flushing in the months of June, August and October and different fermentation time (30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 minutes). It is evident from the results obtained that apart from genetic differences in the clones under study, changes in climatic conditions during different periods of flushing and fermentation time can to a great extent influence the amount of TF, TR, total color and brightness in black tea. Results obtained also indicated significant interacting effects of clones, different flushing and fermentation times on the quality-determining characteristics of black tea. No significant correlations were found between TR and brightness however, significant correlations were found between other characteristics studied at the 1% probability level. On the basis of regression analysis with fermentation time (independent variable) and each of the characteristics studied (dependent variable), linear relationships were detected between fermentation time and brightness and TF content. Multi-variable regression analysis between brightness (dependent variable) and TF and TR (independent variables) showed that more than 56% of variations in brightness in black tea was related to TF and TR. Also multi-variable regression analysis between total color (dependent variable) and TF and TR (independent variable) indicated that more than 43% of variations in total color in black tea can be attributed to TF and TR percentages

Abstract
Six rice cultivars were crossed in half diallel design to evaluate their GCA and SCA in 2005. In the following year, parents and their progenies were grown in a randomized complete block design with three replications, and 10 traits were measured. The analysis of variance showed significant differences (p≤0.01) between cultivars. Furthermore, general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) for parents and hybrids were significant. Therefore, additive and non-additive gene effects on controlling traits were demonstrated. According to the analysis based on the second and fourth Griffing methods, additive gene effects were more than non-additive gene effects on controlling growth period, plant height, panicle length, number of panicles/plant and brown rice length, while other studied traits were more controlled by non-additive gene effects. Comparison of the second and fourth Griffing methods showed that the proportions of additive and non-additive variances in two methods were different. Moreover, GCA and SCA resulting from the two methods for several traits such as vegetative and productive growth period, plant height, number of filled grains/panicle and grain yield were significant. Therefore, it could be concluded that using parental generations in the second Griffing method may cause biased estimate of the GCA and SCA variances. Thus, using the fourth Griffing method is more suitable than the other methods in providing time, cost and facilities, and is recommended as an applicable method.

Abstract
To study relationship between grain yield and important agronomic traits of rapeseed in paddy fields as second culture, fourteen varieties of spring rapeseed were grown in a randomized complete block design of experiment with three replications at Rice Research Institute of Iran, Rasht, during 2005-2006. Analysis of variance showed that there were significant differences between varieties for most of traits. Broad sense heritability ranged from 0.29 for pod length to 0.99 for days to maturity. Phenotypic and genotypic coefficients of variation for days to maturity and the number of pods in secondary branches were the lowest and highest, respectively. Moreover, genetic advance with 5% of selection intensity varied from 3.68% (0.25 cm) for pod length in main branch to 31.48% (915.58 Kg.ha-1) for grain yield. Results from genotypic correlation coefficients demonstrated that there were positive significant correlations between grain yield and the number of secondary branches, the number of pod in main and secondary branches, pod length in secondary branches, pod diameter in main and secondary branches, 1000-grain weight and oil percentage, and negative significant correlations between grain yield and days to 90% of flowering and days to maturity. Path analysis on genotypic correlations for grain yield as a dependent variable and the other traits as independent variables showed that the 1000-grain weight and the number of pods in secondary branches had the highest direct effects and days to 90% of flowering had low and negative direct effect on grain yield. Therefore, indirect selection for increasing 1000-grain weight and the number of pods in secondary branches are recommended for improving grain yield in rapeseed as second culture in paddy fields.

Abstract
Leaf chlorosis during both green house forcing and postharvest have been a long standing problem in Easter liliy. The symptoms typically start in the basal leaves and moves progressively upward and reduce flower quality and economic value of crop. In order to delay leaf chlorosis and increase vase life, an experiment was carried out on Asiatic hybrid Lilium cv Canova to study different treatments of benzyladenine (BA) and silver thiosulphate (STS) on pre and postharvest attributs, respectively. The results showed that preharvest application of BA effect the chlorophyll content of leaves significantly, but itُ s effect on stem and pedicle length and harvest time were not significant. Treatment of 0.44 mM BA on increased chlorophyll content greater than another treatments. In postharvest study, factors of 0.44 mM BA on chlorophyl1 content of leaves and leaf longevity, treatment of 0.88mM BA+ 0.6 mM STS on vase life, total soluble solids and uptake solution had most effect. The results showed that application of STS and BA can be used to prolong vase life, delay leaf senescence and enhance postharvest quality of lilium cut flowers during their transport market.

Abstract
Factor and principal component analyses are widely used in different sciences especially in agricultural science. To determine the factors that create variation between potato cultivars, in normal (non-stress) and water deficit (stress) conditions, two experiments were conducted in the form of randomized complete block design with three replications in summer 2002. Stepwise regression analysis showed that in normal conditions, stem length, number of stems/plant and leaflet width contributed significantly to yield. In stress condition, other than stem length and number of leaves/main stem, leaflet length also entered the model. As is evident, stem length had a detrimental effect on tuber yield in both stress and non-stress conditions. So, this trait could be used as an important criterion for the selection of high yielding genotypes. Principal component analysis revealed that number of stem, leaf length and leaf width were important traits creating variability between potato cultivars, especially number of stem that had high coefficients in the first principal for both environments. Factor analysis distinguished two factors in normal environment named leaf surface and structural attitude factors, and also two factors in stress environment called photosynthetic surface and structural attitude. Therefore, these factors should be intervened and attended to in breeding programs.

Abstract
The effects of tillage methods and residual management on yield and yield components of rapeseed (Brassica napus L. CV. Hyola308) were evaluated after rice harvest. The experiment was carried out during 2004-2005 cropping season in a factorical arrangement of treatments at Rice Research Institute of Iran (RRII) in Rasht, in a Complete Randomized Block Design with three replications. Treatments included tillage in three methods: a) conventional tillage b) minimum tillage, and c) no tillage, and rice residue management in two manners: a) removing residues, and b) not removing residues. Plant traits such as grain yield, oil percentage and yield, plant density, plant height, the lowest pody branch height from soil surface, number of pods per plant, plant and weed dry weight, leaf area index (LAI) and crop growth rate (CGR) were measured. Results indicated that grain yield was affected by the tillage type. Also, the effect of tillage type on plant height, number of pods per plant, the lowest pody branch height from soil surface, and oil yield was significant. The effect of residual management and residual management interaction and tillage were significant on none of the traits except for weed dry weight. Economic analysis indicated that rapeseed planting in a field with rice residual and minimum tillage had a relative advantage of less production cost in spite of nearly 15 percent yield decrease compared to other methods.

Abstract
Discrimination function analysis is a method of multivariate analysis that can be used for determination of validity in cluster analysis. In this study, Fisher’s linear discrimination function analysis was used to evaluate the results from different methods of cluster analysis (i.e. different distance criteria, different cluster procedures, standardized and un-standardized data). Furthermore, Hotelling T2, CCC plot and multivariate analysis of variance were used to support the results. To achieve the goals, 8 rapeseed genotypes were planted in a randomized complete block design with three replications in Rice Research Institute of Iran, Rasht, durin 2005-2006, and 14 characteristics were measured. Analysis of variance based on the randomized complete block design showed significant differences between genotypes for all the studied traits. Comparison of means between genotypes indicated that the genotype Hyola401 for grain yield and most of the measured characteristics was better than the other genotypes. Evaluation of phenotypic and genotypic coefficient of variations showed that most of the traits had high variability in the population. Discrimination function analysis showed that the Euclidean distance criterion was better than others and a desirable clustering was obtained by this criterion. Also, all of the data standardization methods produced similar clusters and were better than un-standardized data. Based on evaluation of dendrograms derived from different methods of cluster analysis determined that the UPGMA, complete linkage and Ward’s minimum variance methods were better than the other methods, and grouped the genotypes into three clusters. Fisher’s linear discrimination function analysis showed that UPGMA and Ward's minimum variance methods with clustering validity of 87.5 percent, was more suitable than other cluster analysis methods however, discrimination analysis grouped genotypes into two clusters. Tests of Hotelling T2, CCC plot and multivariate analysis of variance supported the results from the discrimination function analysis. It seems that the UPGMA and Ward's minimum variance procedures based on Euclidean distance criterion of standardized data function better in grouping genotypes, yet, the use of discrimination function analysis is recommended to confirm the results and determine the actual groups.

Abstract
In order to study the correlation of agronomic, morphologic and physiologic traits and their effects on grain yield of rice genotypes in two environments (favorable irrigation and water stress), 49 genotypes were evaluated using a completely randomized block design with 3 replications in two experimental conditions. All practices and conditions were the same for the two experiments with the exception of irrigation, where under stress conditions no irrigation was applied at tillering stage. Comparison of means showed significant differences between genotypes in each environment. Also, differences between yield and yield components of each genotype under two conditions were significant. The results of phenotypic correlations showed that the highest positive and significant correlation with grain yield belonged to number of panicle per plant (0.95) in irrigation conditions and to number of filled grains per panicle (0.92) in water stress conditions. Stepwise regression analysis for grain yield introduced number of panicle per plant, relative water content (RWC), flag leaf length and number of spikelet per panicle, respectively, as effective traits in grain yield in irrigation conditions, however, in stress conditions, number of filled grain per panicle, number of panicle per plant and relative water content were effective traits in yield. The results of path analysis showed that the number of panicle per plant had the highest positive and direct effect on grain yield in the two environments. Factor analysis introduced four factors in the two conditions named yield and crop production, phenologic, harvest index and plant shape and appearance quality of grains factors. Therefore, to select high yield and drought tolerant genotypes, we need to consider number of filled grain per panicle, number of panicle per plant and relative water content. In addition, traits such as panicle length, number of spikelet per panicle, flag leaf length and width that showed significant correlations with grain yield in stress conditions should also be considered important and second to the above mentioned traits.

Abstract
Soils pollution with heavy metals is due to the presence of various metals such as copper, nickel, cadmium, zinc, chromium and lead. Heavy metals have a negative effect on the biological parameters of soil, including size, activity and diversity of soil microbial population, as well as the enzymes involved in the deformation of such elements as P, N, C, and S. Thus, the activity of soil enzymes as a bioavailable agent is reflected as a cheap and fast method for the natural and anthropogenic distribution of heavy metals contamination. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of lead, humidity and their interaction on urease and phosphatase enzyme activity during a 10 week incubation period. Different levels of acetate lead (50,100, 150 and 200 mg/kg soil) were added to the plots containing two different moisture regimes (field capacity and flooding). The activity of urease and phosphatase (alkaline and acidity) was measured after 2,4,6,8 and 10 weeks of incubation. The results indicated different levels of lead had no significant effect on the activity of urease and acidity phosphatase. In contrast, high levels of lead significantly reduced the activity of alkaline phosphatase. Moreover, moisture served a different role in the activity of these enzymes, and it was related to the lead concentration and incubation time. Additionally, the function and interaction of lead, moisture and time were very influential on urease and phosphatase activity. Therefore, the above three characteristics are very important to study soil contamination for the polluted soils.

Abstract
Cultivation of rapeseed as the second crop requires drainage systems in most of the paddy fields of the Guilan province. Mole drainage, as a low-cost and shallow drainage method that is suitable for rice cultivation conditions and easier to implement than pipe drainage, can be a solution in the development of second-crop cultivation. The present study was conducted to evaluate the drainage of mole drainage and nitrogen fertilizer management on the quantity and quality of drainage at Guilan University. In this regard, an experiment was conducted under two treatments including drainage and nitrogen fertilizer (i.e. traditional mole drainage and sand-filled mole drainage), and 180 and 240 kg of nitrogen fertilizer per hectare in three replications. After each rainfall during the plant growth period, water samples were taken from the drains, and parameters of electrical conductivity, pH, total suspended solids, total phosphorus, turbidity, concentrations of ammonium, chloride, nitrite, nitrate, and phosphate were measured. Also, the outflow from the drains and the water table level were measured by piezometers during the rain and after that. The results of the mean comparison of pH and total suspended solids showed that most of them were obtained with 7.49 and 281.25 mg/liter, respectively, in the mole drain filled with sand and the traditional mole drainage and 180 fertilizer treatment. The highest mean of electrical conductivity and turbidity was observed as 651 micro mohs/cm in the traditional mole drainage and 240 fertilizer treatment and with 67.76 NTU in the traditional mole drainage and 180 fertilizer treatment. The statistical analysis showed that the effect of drainage treatment on the amounts of ammonium, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate, and total phosphorus was not significant. The outflow from the traditional mole drainage was 49% lower than the sand-filled mole drainage. The traditional and sand-filled mole drains were able to drain excess water with average reaction coefficients of 0.8 and 0.83 per day during the growth period, respectively. Considering the speed of water discharge, drain discharge, and the main non-significance of qualitative parameters among drainage treatments, mole drainage filled with sand is recommended for the development of rapeseed cultivation in paddy fields.
