Abstract

In order to study the genetic diversity of 75 Iranian rice genotypes (45 Iranian land race, 25 improved cultivars, and 5 exotic cultivars) with respect to their salinity tolerance at seedling stage and to determine tolerance indices, based on biomass, genotypic code and Na+/K+ ratio a factorial experiment in randomized complete block design with three replications was conducted under control and salt stress(1.2, 4 and 8 dSm-1) conditions at Rasht Rice Research Institute. Root and shoot length, root and shoot dry weight, Na+ and K+ concentrations, and genetic score were studied. Significant differences were detected among genotypes for all traits. Shoot length and K+ concentration had the highest and lowest heritability estimates, respectively. Genetic score under salinity stress showed that Tarom-mahalli, Gharib, Shahpasand Mazandaran and Ahlami-Tarom with more biological yield root and shoot lenghes, and low Na+/K+ ratio were tolerant. Khazar, Speedroud, IR28 and IR29 were the most sensitive cultivars. Tarommahalli, Ahlamitarom, Rashti and Chparsar had low tolerance index, mean productivity, stress sensitive index, geometric mean index, stress tolerance index and harmonic mean for genetic score, whereas Khazar and Speedroud had high values for theses indices. Cluster analysis, based on seedling traits at 4 and 8 dS.m-1 divided the genotypes to three groups. Tolerante group had low genetic score and Na+/K+ ratio, but high root and shoot dry weight, biomass, root and shoot length.

Abstract

The cabbage aphid Brevicoryne brassicae L. is an important pest, which attacks the rape seed and causes economic damage. In this study, effects of four different cultivars of rape seed (Zarfam, Licord, Hyola 401, and SLM046) on biological parameters and intrinsic rate of increase of B. brassicae were studied in laboratory conditions (25±1ºC, 70±10 RH and of 14:10 (L:D) photoperiod). Results showed that maximum nymphal and reproductive period, longevity of insects were found on Licord cultivar. The maximum fecundity of adult aphid was seen on Hyola 401. There was no significant difference between duration of developmental stages, and aphid fecundity on different cultivars. The intrinsic rate of increase was calculated by Wyatt & White method. Estimated intrinsic rate of natural increase of aphid was 0.316, 0.294, 0.311, and 0.289 on Zarfam, Licord, Hyola 401, and SLM046, respectively. Although the lowest intrinsic rate of increase was observed on Zarfam, statistical analysis of Wyatt & White output showed there was not any significance difference between rm on different cultivars.

Abstract

A compound sharp-crested weir is often used to measure a wide range of flows with appropriate accuracy in open channels. In this study, experiments were performed to investigate the hydraulic flow through a compound weir of circular-rectangular with changes in hydraulic and geometric parameters in free and submerged flow conditions. The characteristics of the weirs include rectangular spans width of 39 cm, a circular radius of 5, 7.5, and 12.5 cm, and heights of 10 and 15 cm. The results showed that by increasing the radius and height of the Weir, upstream water depth increases around 28.4%. At a constant h/p, the discharge coefficient increases with the increasing radius of the circular arc. Also, in the submerged conditions, the discharge coefficient is less (around 40%) than in the free flow condition, which is due to the resistance of the depth of the created stream against the passage of the flow.
