Abstract

The Drying process is one of the most important factors which are effective on the milling quality of rice and its economic value. In order to investigate the effect of dryer parameters on milling quality of rice and their relationships, one of the usual rice varieties (Binam) of Gilan province with an average milling quality and the initial moisture content of 20.5% was selected. Drying process was performed on the basis of a complete randomized design with 20 treatments and 3 factors including temprature (at five levels of 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70 °C) , air velocity (at two levels of 0.5 and 2 m/s) and final moisture content of paddy (at two levels of 10.5% and 14% on wet basis equal to 11.7% and 16.3% on dry basis respectively). Results of the experiments indicated that increase of temprature or air velocity reduces drying time but increases drying rate constant (K). It also revealed that decrease of final moisture content of paddy increases drying time significantly, but doesn’t have any significant effect on drying rate constant (K). Correlation test indicated that milling loss (breakage) has a negative relation to drying time and a positive relation to drying rate constant(K), however, bending strength has a positive relation to drying time and a negative relation to constant of K. Regression of qualitative properties of paddy including: milling loss (breakage) and the bending strength over drying time and constant of K revealed that drying time is a better criterion for predicting the mentioned qualitative properties.

Abstract

Exo-polysaccharide (EPS) production by some lactic acid bacteria (starter) during fermentation could affect the physical properties of yoghurt. In this study, at first EPS content and its effects on physical properties of three traditional (S1, S2 and G) and one industrial (I) yoghurt samples were studied. The results showed that there was significant differences in fat content, solid non-fat content, pH, EPS content, viscosity, elasticity and sensitivity to syneresis among samples. Statistical analysis based on a completely randomized design revealed that a significant correlation exists between EPS content and viscosity as well as resistance to syneresis of the samples. Fat content and solid non-fat content of the samples showed no correlation with physical properties of the samples. In the second phase of the study, to remove effects of raw milk composition and to be able to attribute the results to the EPS producing activity of the starter, skim milk was used to produce yoghurt samples using yoghurt samples tested in the first stage only as sources of starter. In these yoghurt samples, there were significant differences between amount of EPS and physical properties of yoghurts. There was also a significant correlation between EPS content and physical properties of each sample.

Abstract

Underground water resources considered as a major source of fresh water. Increasing need to water in Iran, causing to immensely utilization and ground water balance disorder, so that state of ground water in many of area is negative.The purpose of this study is to investigate the trend of changes in some of the characteristics of groundwater during the period 1374 to 1387 is Segzi plain. For this purpose, data gathered from the Organization of regional water and homogenous test with Tom test (Run-test) at 95% confidence level was performed on the data. The independence of data evaluated by time series auto correlated functions (ACF), to do this, the amount of auto correlated data computed in different time delays and finally Mann- Kendall test used to evaluate the trend of time series properties in groundwater. The results of Run-Test showed that all of used series in this study were homogenous (P value< 0.05). The result of trend analysis test for region’s wells showed a significant increase in chlorine in underground water resources (P value< 0.05). Calcium has an increasing Trend too about 3 units. Results also showed that all used series in this study are random and Mann- Kendall trend analysis test can be an appropriate for trend evaluating in data series. As regard to irregular utilization of underground water resources by increasing depth of water level, amount of different salts such as chlorine and sodium increased, that causing to surface source degradation like soil and plant cover in agricultural area.

Abstract

Erosion is one of the main factors of destruction of hydraulic structures. Therefore, soil improvement is necessary to improve soil quality and reduce soil erosion. Due to the adverse effects of substances such as lime and ash and also the increasing usage of nanotechnology in various branches of engineering sciences, using nanoparticles as new additives is an efficient way. In this study, to investigate the effect of nanosilica additive on soil, erosion function apparatus (EFA) is used. Samples containing nanosilica with 0, 1, 1.5, 2 and 4 percent (w/w) of dry soil were compacted in the standard compaction mold. They were tested in a close flume and with variable discharges. Erodibility parameters showed that by addition of 1.5% nanosilica to the dry soil, erodibility decreased by 92% as compared with untreated soil. The optimal amount of nanosilica was chosen as 1.5%. The results showed that samples compacted with the optimum moisture content causes the least erodibility. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) tests results showed that by addition of nanosilica to the dry soil, soil structure becomes more dense which reduces the risk of erosion.
