Abstract

Of all types of xenobiotics, pesticides such as herbicides play a significant role in soil and water pollution due to their widely usage all over the world. This study addresses the ability of organic amendments to enhance atrazine and metamitron degradation in two herbicide contaminated soils with contrasting textures under laboratory conditions. Soil samples were collected from surface soils with textures of sandy loam and silty clay, from northeastern part of Iran. Initial concentration of herbicides was 50 mgkg-1 soil. Contaminated soil samples were treated by manure, compost and vermicompost at the rates of %0.5 and %2 (w/w). Residual concentrations of atrazine and metamitron were determined by HPLC at the end of incubation periods of 20,40 and 60 d. Residual concentrations of atrazine were 93, 77.8 and 72.4 % of the initial concentration after 20, 40 and 60d incubation, respectively. Residual metamitron concentrations were clearly lower than atrazine. After 20,40 and 60 d., the remaining concentrations of metamitron were 5.8, 2 and 1.2 %, respectively. Organic amendments at the rates of .5 and 2 % showed similar effects on the enhancement of herbicides degradation in soils. However, no significant effect was observed between types of organic amendments. Degradation was clearly affected by soil textures. Residual concentrations of herbicides were higher in sandy loam than in silty clay soil.

Abstract

In order to determine the most important quantitative and qualitative characteristics of pomegranate fruit and its components for categorizing the genotypes, a study was carried out using 24 genotypes. In this study 28 quantitative and qualitative characteristics of pomegranate fruit and seed were evaluated. Analysis of variance showed that all of the characteristics in examined genotypes were significant, showing high variability in characteristics. Results of simple correlation analysis showed the existence of significant, positive and negative correlations among some important characteristics. Also, factor analysis showed that most of fruit juice, aril and seed characteristics constituted the main factors. Effective characteristics categorized in seven factors accounted for 89% of total variance. For each factor, eigen value more than 0.7 was considered significant. Cluster analysis was performed using these seven factors and genotypes, in the distance of 9, were divided into 5 main clusters. These groups were mainly distinct in fruit flavor and soft seededness. Furthermore, by using three main factors, genotypes positions determined in 3-plot analysis, which distinguished sweeter genotypes from sweet-sour and sour genotypes.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper was to assess the groundwater quality near Qaemshahr landfill site using the Iran Water Quality Index for Groundwater Resources-Conventional Parameters (IRWQIGC). In this study, samples were taken from 11 wells with three replications in February 2015 and water quality was assessed by evaluating nitrate, fecal coliform, electrical conductivity (EC), pH, total hardness, sodium absorption ratio, biological oxygen demand, phosphate, chemical oxygen demand, and dissolved oxygen parameters with the standard measuring methods; also, the quality of ground water was determined using the IRWQIGC. Statistical description of the parameters was performed using the SPSS software. Spatial extension mapping parameters were drawn using geostatistics extension with the ArcGIS software. The results of water quality assessment revealed that 0.15% of the area was classified as bad, 98.85% as relatively poor, and 1% as middle in terms of quality. The results of spatial dispersion also revealed that water quality from the South to the North and North East was reduced. Evaluating the changes in water quality near landfill sites showed that 2149.56 square meters of total area had a relatively poor potential for the region’s groundwater recharge.
