Abstract
In vitro regeneration of two cultivars of carnation, namely, ‘Nelson’ and ‘Impulse’ was studied through direct somatic embryogenesis. Somatic embryos were formed directly on petal explants cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium containing different concentrations (0.2, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 6 mg 1-1) of picloram. Maximum embryogenesis was obtained with 1 and 2 mg/l picloram. Globular shaped embryos were developed into cotyledonary-shaped embryos when they were transferred to the growth regulator-free media containing different concentrations (2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 %) of sucrose. Increasing sucrose concentrations in the culture media enhanced somatic embryos development. Cotyledonary somatic embryos developed plantlets when they were transferred to the half-strength MS culture medium containing 3% sucrose. Plantlets also continued to grow under greenhouse conditions.

Abstract
The continuous rapid development of telecommunications and computer-based information technology (IT) is probably one of the biggest factors of change in agricultural extension, which will facilitate and reinforce other changes. There are many possibilities for the potential applications of the technology in agricultural extension, about which attitudes of extension professionals is highly important. The present study was conducted to assess the attitude of extension professionals which can affect the adoption of IT by extension system. The population of the study consisted of 1145 extension professionals working throughout the country in different provinces. Using a stratified random sampling technique, 241 extension experts were selected as the sample for the study. The reliability and validity of the tools of study were confirmed by a pilot study and expert judgment. The results of the study indicated that the respondents had higher knowledge on word processing softwares, windows and file management in the area of computer application. In contrast, in the area of internet application they were mainly interested in getting information from specialized sites, searching by search engines of Yahoo and Google and exchanging e-mails. Correlation analysis showed that there was a significant relationship between the attitude of extension professionals and their age, educational attainments, knowledge of IT, its application and English language proficiency. Meanwhile, there was a significant difference between attitudes of male and female extension experts towards IT.

Abstract
In this research the effects of two common cooking processes of foods, namely, autoclave and extrusion cooking on the molecular and physicochemical properties of wheat starch were investigated. The results showed that the solubility of the autoclaved samples increased with increasing the temperature while their relative viscosity decreased. These findings indicated that the molecular degradation of starch could occur during autoclave cooking. Moreover, constant sedimentation coefficient (s-value) of amylose and decreasing the s-value of amylopectin with increasing the temperature further confirmed degradation of amylopectin in particular. The results of the extruded samples showed that reduction in water content may increase the shear and pressure produced during extrusion cooking, which in turn could cause several changes in starch properties including degradation of starch granules, formation of amylose-lipid complex and degradation of amylopectin (as determined by reduction of the s-values). Also, reduction in water content could increase the puffiness of the final products and reduce the cold-water and final viscosities of the extruded samples. These observations may indicate the importance of the molecular studies of starch for better interpretation of physical changes of the final products.

Abstract
This study was undertaken to estimate genetic trend and parameters of Holstein cattle in Khorasan province for milk yield using a spline random regression test day animal model. A total of 32854 monthly test day milk records (twice and thrice a day milking) obtained from 3842 Holstein heifers (progeny of 466 sires) distributed in 125 herds and calved from 2001 to 2005 was used to predict breeding value of individual animals. In the model, fixed effects of herd including year-month of recording, milking times, age at calving (linear and quadratic covariables), Holstein gene percentage (linear covariable) as well as random effects of additive genetic and permanent environment were studied. To take account of the shape of the lactation curve at genetic and environmental levels, cubic spline polynomials were also included in the test day model. Bayesian method by applying Gibbs sampling technique (100000 chains applying RRGIBBS software) was utilized to obtain posterior means of predicted breeding value of animals for milk yield at individual month of lactation. The results showed that mean of breeding value for 305-day milk yield was 52.90 kg (p<0.05). Spearman rank correlations between predicted breeding values at different months of lactation decreased as the interval between them increased. The highest and lowest rank correlations were found between months 8 and 9 (0.998) and between months 1 and 10 (0.312), respectively. Predicted breeding value of 305-day milk had the lowest and highest rank correlations with predicted breeding value at months 1 (0.553) and 6 (0.990), respectively. Regression analysis of average predicted breeding value of progenies in their birth year showed that the amount of genetic trend for 305 day milk yield was 17.75 kg per year, statistically no different from zero (p value=0.165).

Abstract
Estimating the volume of groundwater contribution to runoff within a watershed is one of the most important subjects in water resources management and hydrology. In this paper, groundwater contribution to total runoff as a base flow index was estimated using hydrograph separation in six stream gauging stations in southwest of Iran. The major objective of this research is to distinguish the most suitable automated hydrograph separation and base flow estimation method. Conventional automated hydrograph separation methods including local minimum and recursive digital filter with the parameter of 0.9 to 0.975 were compared with recession analysis numerically and graphically. The results showed that recursive digital filter with the parameter of 0.925 is the most accurate method to estimate base flow in the studied watersheds. This research also indicated that the base flow index estimated through the selected method varies from 0.79 to 0.88 in the study area.

Abstract
Transport and filtering of pathogenic bacteria through porous media and groundwater resources are important and، therefore the effect of various factors on bacteria transport and filtering has been given a great attention nowadays. In this study، effects of calcium sulfate and carbonate on Psedomonas fluorescens filtration and filtering parameters were investigated in saturated sand columns under steady-state flow. The calcium carbonate levels included 0، 5، 10 and 20 %w/w and calcium sulfate levels consisted of 0، 5 and 10 % w/w which were thoroughly mixed with sand (0.15-0.25 mm). The experiment was considered factorial in completely randomized design with three replicates. The treated sands were poured into pyrex cylinders with length of 20 cm and diameter of 7 cm. Then، steady-state saturated flow with constant flux was applied to the columns. When the steady-state flow was established، the bacteria suspension with concentration of 106 CFU cm-3 (C0) was injected as step input into the columns. The leaching then was continued up to 5 times of pore volume (PV). The effluent concentration of the bacteria (C) was measured at 0.25 PV intervals. Then، the sand columns were divided into 0-5، 5-10، 10-15 and 15-20 cm layers in order to measure the filtered bacteria in each layer. The results showed that the effects of calcium carbonate on retaining of the bacteria in the 5-10 and 10-15 cm layers were significant at 1% level. It was significant at 5% for the 15-20 cm layer. The effect of calcium sulfate was also significant at 5% for the 10-15 cm and 15-20 cm layers. The interactive effects of treatments on bacteria adsorption was significant for the 5-10، 10-15 and 15-20 cm layers. The retained concentration profile and the filtration coefficient were significantly affected by the treatments، showing higher bacteria adsorption at lower depths and predominance of physical filtering. The results showed the high filtering capacity of carbonate and sulfate minerals which could ultimately reduce bacteria transport in saturated porous media towards groundwater resources.

Abstract
Despite the existence of highly silty soils in southern Mashhad, there is no information about the aeolian and /or in situ formation of these soils. The main objective of this study was to determine the source of silt generation in this area. Granitic hilly lands in southern Mashhad have been covered by silty deposits. Based on the soil origin, four profiles including a residual soil covered by a silty layer, a residual soil with low amount of silt, a highly silty soil and an alluvial soil as well as a deep profile containing a succession of silty and alluvial materials were studied. Cumulative particle size distribution curve (CPSDC), depth distribution curves of silt/sand ratio (Si/S), Folk inclusive graphic standard deviation, Folk inclusive graphic skewness (SKI) and sand grain morphology analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were determined and used to identify the source of the silty materials. Based on the results obtained, silty (L), residual-silty (R-L), residual (R), alluvial (A) and alluvial-silty (A-L) horizons were identified. CPSDC of L horizons is sigmoidal in shape and is easily distinguishable from that of the other horizons. In contrast, the CPSDC of alluvial and residual horizons is spherical in shape. CPSDCs for R-L and A-L horizons are neither sigmoidal nor spherical, but something in between. The L horizons have the highest SKI (very skewed to fine particles) and the lowest Folk inclusive graphic standard deviation (very badly sorted). In this regard, alluvial and residual horizons are intermediate. Because of the silt addition to R-L and A-L horizons, these horizons have a nearly zero SKI (symmetrical) and the highest Folk inclusive graphic standard deviation (very badly sorted). Particle size distribution histograms of R-L and A-L horizons are bimodal, a mode for sand and a mode for silt, suggesting two different sources. Depth distribution of Si/S, SKI and Folk inclusive graphic standard deviation of highly silty and other horizonz show a drastic change between L horizons and the other horizons-an indication of lithologic discontinuity and difference in origin. In conclusion, despite the possible contribution of granitic parent rocks to silt generation in the area, loess deposits recognized appear to have mostly been transported by aeolian movement.

Abstract
In the conventional methods of herbicide and fertilizer application, a substantial amount of toxic chemicals is sprayed or broadcast into the furrows, which is later washed away by irrigation water and may contaminate ground water, human and animal environment. If herbicide and fertilizer application could be limited to the most needed parts of the field rather than overall broadcasting, the mentioned problems could be alleviated and the application efficiency could also be increased by reducing the consumption rate. In an attempt to achieve this goal, a combination cultivator capable of simultaneously performing cultivation practices such as weed control (mechanical + chemical), fertilizer application and pest control was developed and evaluated. This machine was able to perform band spraying (fungicide, insecticide and herbicide) and mechanical cultivation (within-the-row weed killing, furrow reforming and hilling) simultaneously and properly. The combination cultivator was able to reduce herbicide consumption up to 66%.

Abstract
Cultivars or species of different plants through physical and biochemical characteristics or indirectly through food diet of host plant can influence behavioral characteristics and efficiency of a natural enemy. This investigation was conducted to determine percentage of parasitism and functional response of parasitoid wasp, Platytelenomus hylas (Hym., Scelionidae) to different egg densities of stem borer, Sesamia nonagrioides (Lef.) and effect of different cultivars on it. At the first stage, eggs of pest were separately collected from fields in three cultivars of CP48-103, CP69-1062 and CP57-614 and then percentage of parasitism in each cultivar was calculated. For determining functional response of the wasp, collected eggs from fields were reared to adult stage at 29±1 ºC, 60% of RH,. Then functional response of wasp was investigated at densities of 2, 4, 6, 8, 14, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, and 90 of the host eggs for 24h. Analysis of data was done using SAS software. Results showed that egg parasitism by P. hylas in cultivars were significantly different (p<0.05). Type of cultivars influences rate of egg parasitism. Comparison of means by Duncan’s test showed that CP48-103 cultivar significantly differed from two other cultivars: CP69-1062 and CP57-614. Functional response in three cultivars was found to be a type III. Comparison of estimated parameters by Holling model in three cultivars showed that searching efficiency on CP48-103 cultivar was significantly higher than two other cultivars but CP57-614 and CP69-1062 were close to each other. Also, handling time (Th) and the maximum rate of estimated parasitism (T/ Th) on the three cultivars were different and on CP69-1062 they were significantly less than the two other cultivars.

Abstract
The biological and behavioural parameters of Anisopteromalus calandrae (Hym.: Pteromalidae), a parasitoid of Callosobruchus maculatus (Col.: Bruchidae) on Chickpea were studied in laboratory conditions at temperature of 25±1ºC, photoperiod 16:8 (L:D) and 20±5 % RH. The pre-adult period of the wasp was 19.82 ± 0.038 days and pre-ovipositional period in this wasp was so short that female laid eggs immediately after emergence. Reproductive and post reproductive periods were 25.12 ± 1.98 and 1.75 ± 0.28 days, respectively. Adult life span was 26.69 ± 1.98 days. Total number of progeny produced by a female was 240 ± 28.51. The sex ratio (% females) of the resulting adults on hosts was 0.49. The functional response of A. calandrae was type II. The host stage preference by the parasitoid was investigated in two methods, choice and non-choice experiments. In the first condition, the parasitoid preferred the 4th larval instar to others, but in the second, it preferred both 4th larval instar and pupae. Adult longevity for both female and male parasitoids provided with honey solution (% 50), host larvae, host larvae and honey solution (%50), and finally without host larvae and honey solution was 49.00 ± 4.32 , 26.69 ± 1.98, 38.90 ± 3.52 and 5.66 ± 0.37 days for females and 10.64 ± 1.5, 6.85 ± 0.34, 8.41 ± 0.52 and 5.59 ± 0.28 days for males, respectively.

Abstract
The pistachio twig borer moth, Kermania pistaciella Amsel (Lep.: Tineidae) is one of the most important pests of pistachio trees (Pistacia vera L.) in Iran. This study was carried out in two pistachio orchards of Rafsanjan area. Periods of pupal cocoon and adult emergence were recorded in two pistachio orchards for four years. Minimum threshold temperatures were calculated according to the least coefficient of variation method for different developmental stages. Cumulative effective temperatures were calculated for different percentages of pupal cocoon and adult emergence. Results showed that minimum threshold temperatures for overwintering larvae to pupal cocoon formation, Larvae to adult and pupal cocoon to adult were calculated 10ْ C, 11ْ C and 12ْ C, respectively. Cumulative effective temperatures for occurrence of 50% pupal cocoon from overwintering larvae with minimum threshold temperatures 10ْ C under field conditions were 73.6 degree-day. Cumulative effective temperatures for occurrence of 65% adult emergence from overwintering larvae with minimum threshold temperature of 11ْ C under field conditions were 213.8 degree-day. Cumulative effective temperature for occurrence of 65% adult emergence from 5% pupal cocoon, 50% pupal cocoon and 5% adult emergence with minimum threshold temperature of 12 ْ C were 145.3, 126.9 and 71.6 degree days, respectively.

Abstract
Soil salinity is an increasing environmental stress on crops in most areas of Iran since farmers use underground saline water for irrigation. In order to investigate the effects of salt stress on germination and seedling growth of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.), an experiment was conducted at two stages (germination seedling growth), using four levels of NaCl salinity (0, 5, 10, 15 ds/m), and four cultivars of spiny and non-spiny safflower ( a landrace from Isfahan bred cultivars of IL, LRV and PI). The design was factorial and completely randomized based on 3- replicates (CRD). Germination percentage, germination velocity index, root and shoot length, root and shoot dry weight, root to shoot dry weight ratio and salt tolerance index were measured at germination stage. In seedling growth stage, traits such as, stem length, number of leaves, chlorophyll index, root and shoot dry weight, root to shoot dry weight ratio and salt tolerance index were also measured. Results for both growth stages showed that salt stress decreased all the above mentioned traits, significantly, in all cultivars. Salinity × variety interaction at germination stage was also significant, compared to seedling growth stage. Salt tolerance index decreased significantly with increasing salinity at both stages, but differences between cultivars were not significant. Cultivars PI and IL were characterized as the tolerant ones at germination and seedling growth stages, respectively. It could be concluded that safflower cultivars responded differently to salinity in germination phase compared to seedling growth phase, and that safflower suffers more from salinity during germination stage.

Abstract
Grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) is a clonally propagated major fruit crop. In grapevine, identification of genotypes with amplographical features is often based on mature plant characteristics that may be affected by environmental conditions. This approach lacks objectivity and reliability. Recently, molecular markers have proved to be supplementary techniques to analyze genetic diversity and examine genetic relationships existing between cultivars in a range of horticultural crops. In this study, twenty genotypes from grapevine (V.vinifera species) grown in Isfahan province were characterized by RAPD technique to understand the extent of diversity and relatedness. Fifty random primers were used for the RAPD study. Of those, twenty four informative primers which generated reproducible polymorphic bands were used for grouping the genotypes. PCR products of the genotypes’genome revealed a total of 315 bands, out of which 282 were found to be polymorphic. Average number of 13 bands was obtained per primer and the amplification produced ranged in size from 300 bp to 3000 bp. The dendrogram constructed using UPGMA cluster analysis differentiated the genotypes into two major clusters, nineteen in one group and Madar-o-Bache genotype has been placed in a separate one, indicating its high genetic diversity compared to the rest of the genotypes. Intra-clustering within cluster A grouped the genotypes in four sub-clusters as expected from their genetic background. The results of the study revealed that the RAPD technique is a relevant technique to determine genetic diversity, genomic analysis and to examine genetic relationship in grapevines.

Abstract
Kernel hardness is one of the most important characterizations on end-use quality of bread wheat and also used for their marketing classification. Kernel texture, mainly controlled by one major locus (Ha) located on the short arm of chromosome 5D. Two tightly linked genes as puroindolin a , and b covered by this major locus and designed as Pina and Pinb respectively. When both puroindolines are in their ‘functional’ wild state, grain texture is soft. When either of the puroindoline alleles is absent or alter by mutation, then the result is hard texture. In this study, 61 Iranian commercial cultivars and 92 landraces were investigated for their kernel hardness and puroindoline alleles using SKCS and, PCR and cleaved amplified polymorphic sequences (CAPS) techniques respectively. Specific primers were used to amplify Pina and Pinb. The results indicated that frequency of hard, mixed and soft genotypes were 65.6, 19.6 and 14.8% respectively, in commercial cultivars and 58.7, 13 and 28.3% in landraces varieties. Among hard type of commercial cultivars, 18 and 5, genotypes have identified as Pina-D1b and Pinb-D1b respectively. Kavir was only cultivar with Pinb-D1e allele. Pinb-D1b allele was identified in two hard types of landrace varieties. Surprisingly, Pinb-D1c was not found in any varieties. Influence of the above proindoline alleles on kernel hardness showed that the SKCS hardness index of Pina-D1b was significantly higher than that of Pinb-D1b. Our knowledge about the genetic basis of kernel hardness could provide useful information in breeding programs of bread wheat.

This study used a Ricardian approach to measure the impact of climate change on Iranian wheat production and analyzed potential impacts of further climate changes. The study utilized time series data for the period 1984-2004 pooled over 17 provinces. Results showed that climate change has significant nonlinear impacts on net revenue per hectare of wheat in Iran. The results also showed that rise in temperature and reduction in rainfall by the year 2100 will cause the reduction in land value by 41 %, because of increased greenhouse gas emission.

Abstract
Rose is one of the most important ornamental shrubs of the world because of its durability, long period of flowering, different cultivars and its beauty. The rose aphid, Macrosiphum rosae is the most important pest of the rose which causes significant economic damage annually. In order to compare four rose cultivars including Black Magic, Caramba, Noa and Good Life, and a wild rose, Nastaran, infested with rose aphid, a split-plot in time experiment was arranged in randomized complete block design layout with three replications, in Isfahan (Iran) from February 2004 to March 2005. The infestation levels of roses with the rose aphid and its seasonal fluctuations were determined by weekly sampling. Analysis of data showed that there are significant differences (P<0.01) between cultivars. Noa (with pink flowers) has the highest infestation of rose aphid (with average 23.12 ± 0.036 aphids) and Caramba (with yellow flowers) has the lowest infestation (with average 6.46 ± 0.036 aphids). The wild rose, Nastaran, showed low infestation (with average 8.76 ± 0.036) as well. Different sampling times also showed significant differences (P<0.01). There was a significant interaction (P<0.01) between cultivars and sampling date, such that reactions of cultivars to aphid (nymphs, adults and total) were not similar in different sampling dates. Seasonal fluctuations of the rose aphid showed two peaks in a year, in May and December. Activity of the rose aphid in spring which coincides with rapid growth and tenderness of rose foliage causes severe fading and inhibiting of floral opening.

Abstract
Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) is propagated traditionally through offshoots or suckers, which usually appear at or below the ground level surrounding the stem base. However, there are many problems associated with this system. Offshoots are produced in limited number and vegetative propagation through them is slow, laborious, time consuming and expensive. The present study was conducted to determine the best micropropagation protocol for date palm in Kebab, Estameran, Piarom, and Berehi cultivars. The shoot apical meristem from two to three-year-old offshoots was used as source of explants. They were cultured in callus initiation medium, containing different concentrations of 2,4-D (40, 60, 80 and 100 mgl-1), NAA (10 and 20 mgl-1) and 2ip (3 and 5 mgl-1). All cultivars produced high percentage of callus with good quality in a matter of callus friability and color in 100 mgL-1 2,4-D, 20 mgL-1 NAA, and 3 mgL-1 2ip. Kabkab cultivar was superior for callus production (87.25%) in comparison with other cultivars. The calli were then transferred to a proliferation medium and then transferred to somatic embryogenesis medium containing different concentrations of Kinetin (2, 4 and 6 mgL-1), BAP (2, 4 and 6 mgL-1), and NAA (0.1, 0.5 and 1 mgL-1). Somatic embryogenesis was observed in MS medium supplemented with 2 mgL-1 kinetin, 2 mgL-1 BAP, and 0.1 mgL-1 NAA. Kabkab and Estameran cultivars showed higher somatic embryogenesis in comparison with other two cultivars. The somatic embryos were then transferred to MS medium without hormones under light, where they produced shoots and roots. Abbriviations: 2,4-D- 2,4-dichlorophenoxiaceticacid 2ip-N6(2-isopentenyl)adenine NAA-Naphthalene acetic Acid BAP-6-Benzylaminopurine MS-Murashige and skoog (1962).

Abstract
This experiment was conducted to investigate the genetic diversity, identify traits explaining yield variation, recognize relationships between traits and classify accessions in a Iranian and forign germplasem of tall fescue. Forty six Iranian and foreign tall fescue accessions were surveyed for Phenological, morphological and agronomical characters in a randomized complete block design with three replications in field for 2 years. Significant differences were observed for all of the characters, indicating broad variation in this germplasm. Iranian accessions had a better performance for most of the traits in both years indicating their high potential for developing commercial varieties in breeding programs. Basis on stepwise regression analysis, crown width justified the majority of hay yield variation, followed by establishment rate, percentage of dry matter, height and number of stem. Hence, these characters could be used for selecting high yielding cultivars. Factor analysis revealed 4 factors which explained more than 80 percent of the total variation and confirmed the results of regression analysis. Using UPGMA method, cluster analysis revealed five groups. Accessions with similar country of origin or same ecological conditions were grouped in same cluster. Regarding the morphological characters the best accessions were identified to be used in the further breeding projects.

Abstract
Common kilka were chilled during 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 days to determine the influence of such storage times of fish over the quality of the final canned product. For this propose, common factors for determination of fish quality (moisture, total lipid, free fatty acid, peroxide, thiobarbituric acid and fatty acid profile) were selected and compared with the formation of fluorescence compounds in fish tissue and filling media of canned kilka. In this work common indices showed higher oxidative and hydrolytic rancidity of canned samples compared to raw material but the trend of deterioration with the increase of chilled storage time was not well shown. However, filling media fluorescence compounds was significantly increased with the increase of chilled storage time and the decrease of fish primary quality (P< 0.05). According to the present results, fluorescence detection of interaction compounds can provide a good technique to assess quality differences in the final product as its relates to the quality of the raw material used.

Abstract
Iran, with an average annual precipitation of about 252 mm (413 BCM) and renewable freshwater resources of 130 BCM, has irregular distribution of water resources. With a high population growth rate, agriculture remains the greatest water user in Iran but its production still does not meet the total food demand of the country. Due to unreliable water availability, the competition for water from other sectors and the increasing demand for food and better diets, Iran will experience water stress. In this study, virtual water trade in relation to water resources availability has been assessed as a way of relaxing water stress in Iran. The results showed that from the 21 food products, cereals, pulses, nuts and oilseeds are water-intensive crops according to their estimated virtual water content, while fruits, vegetables and industrial crops are not water-intensive. Considering the volume of virtual water entering the country through food imports, more water will be available for other essential uses. However, the virtual water trade has been developed rather unconsciously regarding water use and crop water productivity during the past two decades. For instance, wheat with a share of 58.5% in the virtual water import to Iran, was the dominant imported crop during 1983-2003. By importing 10.4 Mt of wheat, 11.6 BCM of water has been saved within the country during 1999-2003. However, Iran became self-sufficient in wheat production in early 2005. Consequently, this latest drive for self-sufficiency in the production of wheat, as a water-intensive crop, put tremendous pressure on domestic water resources. The trend in crop trade in terms of quantity and virtual water for other groups of crops has also been shown in the study. Seemingly, crop production and import have been greatly influenced by the weather conditions. With the increasing water scarcity, the role of virtual water in food security is expected to rise continuously in Iran. Thus, conscious virtual water trade as a policy measure in water management and judicious adjustment in agricultural structure will ensure sustainable food security and water availability in Iran.
