Abstract
Any mechanical force exerted on a potato tuber during the harvesting may result in mechanical damage. A few weeks prior to harvesting, haulm destruction could improve the rheological properties of the tuber and reduce its susceptibility to mechanical damage. The effects of elevator and oscillatory sieve diggers and haulm destruction on potato loss and mechanical damage were studied on a farmer field in Fereidan region of Isfahan. Two haulm management treatments (destruction and non-destruction) along with five potato diggers (elevator digger with a long main web and with agitator, elevator digger with primary and secondary webs and with agitator, elevator digger with a main web and with/without agitator, and reciprocating riddle digger) were laid out in a strip block design within a randomized complete block design with four replications. The main crop variety, namely Marfona, was planted in the field.
The results showed that the percentages of undigged and soil-covered tubers were significantly different among the potato diggers tested. These losses were due to the dices located to the sides of shares or gage wheels and wrong adjustments on the diggers. Comparing the performance of reciprocating riddle with elevator diggers, its sieving capacity was low and the severity of the mechanical damage and the numbers of tubers covered with soil were high. Haulm destruction was effective in reducing the peeler type damage (the less than 3 mm deep damage to flesh). Although the elevator digger with a main web (elevator chain) and without agitator had the least mechanical damage index, the differences among the elevator diggers tested were not significant (5%).

Abstract
Cooperative have always been considered institutions capable of solving major problems in the process of development in different countries. These institutions has evolved along with theories of development from government dependent organization to independent, people centered with the objective of being equal-opportunity systems for all members in order to be responsive to current goals of development. The aim of the present research was to determine the level of success in mechanized companies in Fars Province (12 Mechanized Companies, 24 Rural Cooperatives and 8 Production Cooperatives) in achieving development goals through a survey research.
The findings indicated that production cooperatives were more successful in promoting farmers' income and participation of members in community activities, increasing equity and farmers' work related welfare while mechanized companies had more achievements in flexibility and participation of members in making decisions regarding farming activities and in terms of payment to farmers. In other words, production cooperatives have been more successful in achieving development goals (increasing income, participation, and work related welfare and decreasing inequity). Mechanized companies rank a position in the middle of the success scale, but rural cooperatives had the lowest success level in achieving development goals.

Abstract
To estimate the biomass and secondary production of macrobenthos in Khore-e-Mousa creeks, 216 sediment samples were taken. The sampling period started in 1996 and terminated in 1997. A bimonthly sampling strategy was adopted. The samples were taken by Van-Veen grab (0.1 m2) from the beginning, middle and end of each creek (Khor). To estimate the biomass of the macrobenthos, the Crisp method (1984) was employed. The standing crop was expressed as dry weight and ash free dry weight. For the measurement of secondary production, a dominant crustacean species Apseudes sp. was used.
The results indicated a low biomass per unit area in Khore-e-Mousa creeks. Maximum and minimum amounts of the standing crop were found to be in June (33.5 g DW/m2) and December (2.19 g DW/m2), respectively. Amongst all creeks, Douragh creek displayed the highest (24.93 g DW/m2) and Beehad the lowest (2.24 g DW/m2) standing crops. During the study period, 1483 individuals of Apseudes sp. were collected and grouped into 5 age classes according to Bhattacharya (Sparre, 1989) method. The secondary production was estimated to be 0.08 g/m2 ash free dry weight (AFDW). The production/biomass ratio (P/B), therefore, is calculated as 0.08÷0.18=0.44. Considering the ecological efficiency, (transfer efficiency) of different trophic levels which is about 10%, the fish production is estimated to be 2430 tons in Khore-e-Mousa area.

Abstract
Rice bran is the most important by-product of rice milling. It is a valuable source of edible oil in most rice producing countries. Rice bran oil is used in babyfood, biscuit, poultry, fish and farm animal feeds. The storage of rice bran without 'heat processing will result in hydrolysis and auto-oxidation of lipids, and to its decreased physicochemical, organoleptic and nutritional quality. Rice bran is rich in carbohydrates, free amino acids, lipids and different enzymes. The enzymes have destructive effects on the quality of rice bran components. Heat processing is an effective method to reduce the microbial and enzymatic activity of bran. This study was carried out using a factorial experiment by completely randomized design with three replications to investigate the effect of heat treatment and storage time on rice bran crude oil properties.
The parboiling treatment was effective on the rice kernel strength. The bran produced from parboiled rice milling had lower endosperm components. This type of bran had a lower starch but a higher oil percentage. The results of color of rice bran oil samples determined by Lovibond showed that the oil from parboiled rice bran before and during storage had better color than the other samples. Iodine value of bran oil from parboiled paddy decreased during the storage period. The results from studies on fatty acid composition of oil samples determined by gas chromatography (G.C.) showed that the quantitative trend of fatty acids of the control sample remained the same as that in the rice bran samples with the treatment process.

Abstract
This study was carried out on the biochemical aspects of chickpea cultivars and the genomic behavior of A. rabiei pathotypes 4 and 6 in four parts: 1) Determining the number of resistant genes in chickpea native cultivars, 2) Comparing the variation of sodium and potassium electrolytes concentrations in noninfected and infected seedling stems of resistant and susceptible cultivars, 3) Studying the effect of potassium deficiency on five differential cultivars by Hoagland nutrient culture, and 4) Using RAPD-PCR method to detect any genomic differences between the two pathotypes used in this study.
Eighteen native chickpea cultivars were chosen for this study. The result of the experiments showed that cultivar 1-60-144 possesses the highest number of resistant genes, while the others were either relatively tolerant or susceptible. The reduction of electrolytes concentration in infected cultivar ILC-1929 in comparison to resistant cultivar ILC-5928 is an indication of compatibility between the host plant and the pathogen. Increasing the level of resistance in differential cultivars and appearance of induced resistance as the result of potassium deficiency is due to the production of putrecine diamine. Eighty percent similarity of pathotypes genomic bands by using CG marker and primer 171 showed insufficient primer numbers and the necessity for using complementary methods.

Abstract
In order to study the efficacy of Sunn pests' parasitoid flies, four overwintering sites of Sunn pest in Isfahan, including mountains of Kolahghazy, Panjeh, Jozdan and Sacepid were selected and from each site four different elevations were designated as sampling sites. During 1997, at least 6 and, in 1998, three samples were taken at each sampling site. In spring 1998, four wheat and barley fields were selected from Mahyar, Zeyar, Shahinshahr and Lavark regions and from each field eight samples were taken. In order to observe the larvae of parasitoids and to determine their efficiency, 100 Sunn pests were dissected from each sampling unit of aestivation, overwintering, wheat and barley fields.
The parasitism of prevalent species (Phasia subcoleoptrata L.) in spring 1998 was 15.39% for the 1st generation and 1.5% in 1997 and 3.5% in 1998 for the second generation of the pest. All other parasitoid species parasitized less than 1% of the pest population. In some regions, such as Lavark and Zeyar, chemical application against nymphs of Sunn pest were accomplished in spring 1998 at the peak of adult activity of parasitoids' 2nd generation. This application had negative effects on the population of parasitoids but in Shahinshahr where chemical application was accomplished at pupal stage of parasitoid, it did not have any direct adverse effects on the population of dominant parasitoid.

Abstract
The objective of this investigation is to measure pectinesterase activity by a simple method. The assay is done at 25°C. Oranges were obtained at a local supermarket in winter. They were peeled and 5 gr sections of the peeled tissue were homogenized in 10% NaCl and 0.5 M phosphate buffer in a homogenizer. The homogenates were centrifuged at 3500 rpm for 20 min. The supernatants were collected, their pH levels were raised to 7.25 using NaOH and the reaction was monitored at 485 nm in a spectrophotometer. The activity of pectinesterase was expressed as micromoles of methanol released per minute.
The results show that this method is reliable, sensitive, and capable of measuring pectinesterase activity of as low as 0.05 unit. The assay method proposed is a very useful analytical tool for the determination of the activities of pectinesterase.

Abstract
Pathogenicity and virulence of entomogenous fungus, Verticillium lecanii, was studied on the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum. Vertalec, a commercial product of V. lecanii, was evaluated under controlled conditions. Second instar nymphs were inoculated with conidial suspensions at concentrations ranging from 104 to 108 conidia/ml, and sterile distilled water (containing wetting agent) as control, then caged on cutted alfalfa stems. Each concentration was replicated three times with 30 aphids treated per replicate. Temperature, relative humidity and photoperiod were maintained at 23±1 °C, %97±3, and 16:8 (L:D), respectively. Aphids were monitored daily over 12 days for mortality and nymph production. All newborn nymphs and dead aphids were removed daily.
Vertalec significantly increased aphid mortality (mean mortality because of mycosis increased form %45.55±6.93 at 104 conidia/ml to %95.55±4.45 at 108 conidia/ml). The LC50 value for pathogen was 5.l4×l04 conidia/ml. LT50 values for 105, 106, 107 and 108 conidia/ml were 10, 8, 6.5 and 5 days, respectively. At 104 conidia/ml LT50 value was not determined at experimental period. Ro values significantly decreased with increasing conidial concentration (mean R0 altered from 28.l5±5.38 in control to 5.15±1.81 at 108 conidia/ml). Results indicated that vertalec can be an effective agent against pea aphids. Further studies are recommended for its evaluation under natural conditions.

Abstract
Probable Maximum Precipitation (PMP) is the maximum possible amount of precipitation which could occur in a gauging station, a region, or in a watershed. Probable maximum precipitation is usually estimated by two general methods: the first is synoptic method in which short period (hourly) meteorological parameters such as dew point, wind speed and air pressure are used. The second is statistical method which is based on the statistical analysis of the 24-h maximum precipitations. In this study, the amount of 24-h PMP was estimated by Hershfield, Bethlahmy and modified Bethlahmy methods using date obtained from meteorological and Ministry of Energy over 15 or more years.
The results showed that there exist large differences between statistical and synoptic methods however, there are rather smaller differences between Bethlahmy and synoptic methods. For modified Bethlahmy method, the results were multiplied by a coefficient of relative humidity. Then the calibrated 24-h PMP values were estimated for all meteorological stations of Iran and a contour map of 24-h PMP for the country was developed.
Results showed that a minimum value of 24-h PMP (110 mm) occurred in the central part of country and a maximum amount (260 mm) was found in both south and north parts of Iran.

Abstract
Pectin is used in a number of foods as a gelling agent, thickener, texturizer, emulsifier and stabilizer. Sugar-beet pulp, the residue left from sugar extraction, is a rich source of pectin. It was the purpose of this study to develop a procedure for the extraction of pectin from sugar-beet pulp and to improve the functional properties of this pectin for more potential uses. To extract pectin, pressed beet pulp was dried and powdered. Then, it was extracted under various conditions (pH 1 and 1.5, temperatures of 80oC and 90oC and extraction periods of 1, 2, 3 and 4 hr). The highest yield (22.35%) was obtained at 90oC after 4 hr at pH 1. Chemical composition of the extracted pectin and that of commercial citrus pectin were determined and compared. Also, the beet pulp pectin was used in certain foods and its functional properties were compared with those of the commercial citrus pectin. The effects of ammonium persulfate and high pH levels on the above mentioned properties were investigated. Finally, the effects of the beet pulp pectin and the commercial citrus pectin on the flavor of certain foods were evaluated. The results indicate that the extracted beet pulp pectin can be used in certain foods such as ketchup sauce as a thickener or as an agent increasing the viscosity however, it does not have the ability to form firm gels in food.

Abstract
Side channel spillways have a common usage in conveyance and distribution networks, high dams, water and wastewater treatment plants, and surface drainage networks. A side channel carries spatially varied flow with increasing discharge and their water surface profiles is a main feature in the design process. Usually, the bottom width of the channel is flared in the flow direction and an end sill is also installed at the downstream end to provide a control section and to generate an even water surface profile. In this study, the impact of installing an end sill on the flow characteristics in a non-prismatic side channel is presented. Six distinct longitudinal profiles were clearly observed in each run and the difference between the mid points of the maximum and the minimum profiles of each run was used to evaluate the sill effects on the water surface profile and the energy dissipation.
The results indicated that the maximum and the minimum differences are, respectively, equal to critical depth and half of it generated at the channel downstream end. Also, based on an envelope of the data, a method was proposed to determine the maximum potential impact of an end sill that might have on the flow depth, which could also be considered as a guideline in the design process.

Abstract
The main objective of the present study is to investigate the production and marketing of fresh figs in Garmsar Region. Semnan Province has the largest area under fresh figs in Iran. About 84 percent of this area is in Garmsar region, hence, it was selected as the study area. Data were collected by random sampling method through interviews with a sample of 70 fresh fig producers in Garmsar region in summer 1999. The production functions of fresh figs were estimated using translog form for the study region. Technical efficiencies for fresh fig producers were estimated using translog stochastic frontier production function.
Results of the current study revealed that farmers are not using some of the inputs optimally. Study of technical efficiency of fresh fig producers did not show the possibility of increasing production by increasing farmers’ technical efficiencies. The average of retail, wholesale and marketing margins of one kilogram of fresh figs were estimated to be 900, 550 and 1450 Rials, respectively. Also, marketing efficiency was calculated as 151%.

Abstract
During 1998-99, a field experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of residual Processed Municipal Waste Leachate (PMWL) on growth and yield of wheat (variety Roshan). The treatments consisted of residual amounts of 0, 150, 300 and 600 t/ha of PMWL and a residual N, P, K, and Zn fertilizer treatment in a randomized block design with 3 replications. In 1998, rice seedlings were transferred to 34 m plots. After harvesting the rice, wheat was seeded in the same plots without any new treatment. Processed municipal waste leachate and fertilizers were applied during the rice growth.
Residual effects of PMWL increased the amounts of available macro- (N, P and K) and micronutrients (Fe, Cu, Zn and Mn) in soil which, in turn, promoted the grain and straw yield of wheat compared to the control. Straw and grain yield increased from 1.67 and 3.50 t/ha in control to 3.93 and 12.80 t/ha in 600 t/ha of PMWL, respectively. The residual effects of PMWL had no significant effect on heavy metals concentrations in plant. The effects of residual PMWL in the soil were proportional to the amount of leachate applied. However, more investigations are recommended to fully understand heavy metals effects on soil, plant, and environment.

Abstract
The general characteristics of salt-affected soils and soil structure degradation process are partially known, but the effects of saline and sodic conditions on mechanical properties of soils are not well recognized. In this study, the effects of electrical conductivity (EC) and sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) on tensile strength of soils with different organic carbon contents were assessed under laboratory conditions. The soil samples were collected from Dasht-E-Naz, at Sari region in the North of Iran. The samples had the same clay mineral (Illitic) and the main difference between them was the organic carbon content, subjected to different cropping systems. The tensile strength was determined on soil samples which had been treated by solutions having defined EC (0.5 and 4 dS/m) and SAR (0, 5, 15).
The tensile strength was positively related to organic carbon content, but negatively to SAR. With increasing SAR, tensile strength decreased, and at a given SAR, the treatments with higher EC showed higher tensile strength. The analysis of variance showed significant differences (at 0.01) between soil samples (four levels), soil sampling depth (two levels), EC (two levels), and SAR (three levels) for all variables under investigation. For soil factor, the order of averages were: Virgin soil > Permanent pasture (Festuca) > Intensive cropping > Permanent pasture (Agropyron).

Evaluation of uric acid contents of poultry excreta was examined for use in the estimation of apparent protein digestibility. Uric acid was determined either by high-performance liquid chromatography or by spectrophotometric method. A high-pressure liquid chromatographic assay was used with absorbance measured at 285 nm. The method used a reverse-phase system with a C18-bonded column (250*4.6 mm, i.d.). The mobile phase was distilled deionized water. Injection volume was 20 l with a flow rate of 1 ml/min.
Correlation (r) between the two methods for uric acid content of excreta from birds fed diets with different methionine levels was 0.976. The uric acid values were then used to determine apparent protein digestibility. The apparent protein digestibility values, when corrected for uric acid nitrogen, were comparable with those calculated from amino acid analysis.

Abstract
Color sticky board traps are used in pest management for capture of adult insect, to estimate and predict population densities in later stages. Yellow sticky board traps showed high attraction for pistachio psylla. It is important to study these relationships for the right placement of traps. For each of three repetition in one year, four pistachio trees were selected randomly in one orchard. Eight traps were located on two heights and four cardinal directions of each tree (32 traps in each repetition). After one week the adult psylla captured were counted. One and two weeks 1ater, eggs and nymph densities were counted on five leaves in one of the eight positions of each tree on four other randomly selected trees (total 160 leaves each time). Data were subjected to analysis of variance. Coefficient of variation was determined between adults captured in each position and eggs and nymph density counts.
There were significant differences for adult capture and egg density among directions, and in most cases significant correlations were observed between adults captured on each position and total egg and nymph density count on trees. It was concluded that for egg and nymphal density estimation, we can place traps on either of two heights and four directions except on lower east part, but preferably on either height in south direction of the trees . Also suggestions for egg and nymph sampling are given in the text.

Abstract
Due to the need for new fumigants to control insects that attack food commodities, the toxicity of acetone was determined on some species of stored pest insects in Urmia University in the year 2000. In empty space tests, the LC50 values of acetone for Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.), Callosobruchus maculatus (F.), Tribolium confusum (Duv.) and Sitophilus granarius (L.) were 15.40, 15.51, 17.55 and 18.26 μl/liter, respectively. The experiments of acetone penetration to wheat mass revealed that the application of acetone in headspace led to the penetration of acetone vapours into the wheat mass and killing the S. granarius and T. confusum had been concealed in interkernel space. The comparison of LC50 values of empty space tests with LC50 values of penetration experiments revealed that the increase in penetration toxicity was 8.63 fold for S. granarius. A similar trend was observed for T. confusum adults. In hidden infestation tests, the application of acetone to the headspace resulted in destroying the developmental stages of S. granarius concealed in wheat and achieved 75% mortality at a dose of 160 μl/liter during seven weeks. Acetone showed no deleterious effects on the germination and vigor of wheat seeds.

Abstract
Downslope soil movement along riverbanks is a significant erosion process. Plant roots, particularly of woody vegetation, apparently stabilize soil on slopes because in most areas where the vegetation is removed, frequent bank failure occurs. Plant roots increase soil-shearing resistance both directly by mechanical reinforcement and indirectly through removal of pore water by transpiration. In this study, the effects of two plant species on the stability of the Karoon River has been investigated. To determine the In-situ shear strength of soil, a special device was designed and manufactured. This device is capable of measuring the shear strength of soil blocks as large as two cubic meters. In this study, twelve soil blocks, four blocks with roots of each tree and four blocks of root permitted were measured.
Comparison of the soil shear strength with roots and root permitted soil shows that tree roots can significantly increase the shear strength of the soil. The amount of increase depends on the type of plant, the age of plant, the diameter of the roots and the percentage of roots in the block. In this study, the amount of increase varied between 20-66%. From the analysis of the data, two equations were developed to determine the increased shear strength.

Abstract
To improve livestock production and to modernize dairy husbandry in Iran, it is essential to disseminate the most recent information on dairy husbandry technologies and management practices through various means among farmers. An understanding of farmers’ communication behaviour is essential in formulating effective communication strategies for livestock development. For the purposes of this study, East Azarbaijan Province was selected. The study will examine how farmers obtain information on dairy husbandry technologies and management practices and how they communicate with agents of technology transfer (extensionists). The major channels and sources used in obtaining information and inter-system communication by farmers are discussed. To study the farmers’ communication behaviour, a sample of 154 farmers from a total of eight villages (four villages from high level plain areas and four villages from low level plain areas) were selected using “Stratified two-stage random sampling” method. Data were gathered by filling out questionnaires that had been tested before. The criteria like frequencies in terms of number and percentage, mean and product moment correlation were calculated. In addition, multiple regression analysis was used for the analysis of the data.
According to the findings of this study, most farmers in the two groups (98%) had low information input score. The independent variables such as information output, farmer inter-system communication, farmer-researcher communication, farmer-extensionist communication, education, family education status and availability of input facilities had positive and highly significant relationships (P<0.01) with information input.
