Abstract
Determining the spatial distribution of different contaminants in soil is essential for the pollution assessment and risk control. Interpolation methods are widely used to estimate the concentrations of the heavy metals in the unstudied sites. In this study, the performances of interpolation methods (inverse distance weighting, local polynomials and ordinary Kriging and radial basis functions) were evaluated to estimate the topsoil contamination with copper and nickel in Golestan Province. 216 surface soil samples were collected from Golestan province, and their Cu and Ni concentrations were measured. Soil contamination was determined using different interpolation methods. Cross validation was applied to compare the methods and estimate their accuracy. The results showed that all the tested interpolation methods have an acceptable prediction accuracy of the mean content for soil heavy metals. RBF-IMQ and IDW1 methods had the lowest RMSE, whereas RBF-TPS method with the largest RMSE estimated a larger size for the polluted area. The greater the weighting power, the larger the polluted area estimated by IDW. Compared with the ‘‘sample ratio over the pollution limits” method, the polluted areas of Cu and Ni were reduced by 8.38% and 6.14%, respectively.

Abstract
Petroleum pollution is an important environmental issue in most of the countries especially those have an oil industry. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of petroleum pollution on soil water repellency and its relation to soil structural stability in Bakhtiardasht area, Isfahan. Polluted and adjacent non-polluted locations were selected to be representative in the green space around the Isfahan Oil Refinery. Soil water repellency was assessed using water drop penetration time (WDPT) in the polluted locations. Soil sample with least aggregates disturbance were collected and selected soil physical and chemical properties were measured. Soil structural stability was evaluated using the wet-sieving method and mechanically dispersible clay (MDC) structural stability indices of mean weight diameter (MWD) and geometric weight diameter (GMD) of aggregates and MDC were then calculated. Results showed that the positive effect of petroleum pollution on the MWD and GMD become significant. Negative impact of petroleum pollution on MDC was also significant. Increment of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) increased the soil water repellency. A positive correlation was observed between soil water repellency and GMD. However, TPHs concentrations greater than 6.4% decreased the MWD and GMD presumably due to anionic repulsion between clay particles and hydrocarbon functional groups. Although greater water repellency increased soil structural stability in the polluted locations when compared to control locations, however, diminished water retention of polluted soil has created an unfavorable condition for the green space in the area.

Abstract
Cadmium (Cd) is a metal with high toxicity and solubility in water, which is a serious environmental threat to human health. Phytoremediation is an environment-friendly method and a promising new and cost effective technology that uses plants to clean organic and inorganic contaminated media. This study was conducted to evaluate the potential of Jatropha curcas for remediation of soils contaminated with Cd. Seedlings were planted in the soil spiked with Cd in amounts of 0, 25, 50, 75, 100 and 150 mg kg-1 (Cd0, Cd25, Cd50, Cd75, Cd100 and Cd150) for a period of five months. Biocentration factor (BCF, metal concentration ratio of plant roots to soil), translocation factor (TF, metal concentration ratio of plant shoots to soil) and removal efficiency (RE, total metal removed by plant biomass to total metal loaded in soil) were determined. Cd concentrations among plant parts were in the following trend: roots>stems>leaves. The highest total Cd concentration (up to 1100 mg kg-1) and the highest RE were found in Cd150 and Cd25, respectively. BCF and TF of the plant were more and less than 1, respectively. Hence, although this species has a potential to be used in phytostabilization of Cd-contaminated soil, more researches in the field condition are needed.

Abstract
This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of vermicompost, pistachio kernel and shrimp shell on the immobilization and availability of Cd, Pb and Zn in corn in polluted soils. Treatments consisted of two levels of pistachio kernel, shrimp shell and vermicompost (5 and 10 % w/w). In control treatment, no amendment was added to the soil. The experiment was carried out as a completely randomized design with 3 replications. Plants grew for two months in the greenhouse. Then, all the plants were harvested and their shoots and roots were separated, washed with distilled water and oven dried at 65 °C to a constant mass. The measured characteristics were dry weight of shoots and roots, leaf area, greenness index, chlorophyll fluorescence, maximal quantum yield of PS photochemistry (Fv/Fm), performance index (PI), and total concentrations of Cd , Pb and Zn in shoots and roots. Results showed that plant growth parameters (dry weight of shoots and roots, leaf area) and photosynthetic characteristics (chlorophyll fluorescence, Fv/Fm, and PI) were higher in plants grown in vermicompost and pistachio kernel treatments as compared to those grown in control. Plants died in shrimp shell treatment after two weeks. The concentration of Cd, Zn and Pb in shoots and roots of plants grown in vermicompost and pistachio kernel treatments were lower than those grown in control.

Abstract
Technosols are modified soils affected by human activities. This study investigated genesis, classification and physicochemical properties of four pedons of Technosols developed on refused oil refinery materials and compared them with two unpolluted pedons. Mineralogical studies showed smectite as a dominant clay mineral with other clay minerals. These clay minerals adsorb oil compounds in their interlayer spaces and reduce their mobility and decomposition. Different micromorphological features resulting from oil compounds in soils, including depletion zones, types of coatings (quasi and hypocoating) and features due to horizontal and vertical movement of oil compound in soil showed dynamics of oil compounds and their effects on soil forming process. The refused petroleum compounds decrease pH and increase organic carbon, amorphous form of Iron in soils. Taking into account the presence of high amounts of gypsum and carbonate in polluted soil, the studied soils were classified as Typic Calcigypsids in Soil Taxonomy but in WRB system, due to the presence of impermeable geomembrane within 100 cm of soil surface, they were classified as Linic Technosols, showing the more precision of WRB system in their classification.

Abstract
Simulation of water and solute transport in soil is very useful for optimum management of water and fertilizer use. In this study, the HYDRUS-1D model was used to simulate water and nitrate transport in furrow irrigation of sugarcane. For this putpose, a large-scale experiment was performed as a split plot design based on the randomized complete blocks with 3 replications in a 25-hectare piece of land in the Dehkhoda Sugarcane Agro-Industry Company from March 2012 to October 2013. The main factor was split application of fertilizer at three levels: two, three and four splits. The sub-main factor was fertilizer amount, applied at three levels (i.e. 350, 280 and 210 kg urea corresponding to 100%, 80% and 60% fertilizer requirements, respectively). Soil hydraulic parameters were estimated through inverse modeling using moisture data collected during more than 4 months of the sugarcane growing season. Solute transport parameters were then estimated using the hydraulic parameters and nitrate concentration data. In this study, statistical criteria including R2, RMSE, ME and SSQ were used to compare the observed and simulated values of moisture content and nitrate concentration. The results indicated that R2 for simulated moisture content and nitrate concentration in four splits and 60% fertilizer requirement treatment (i.e. calibrated treatment) were 62.7 and 91.2 percent, respectively. Cumulative infiltration depths were about 46 and 58 mm for calibration and validation treatments, respectively. For these treatments, the cumulative evapotranspiration rates were 50 and 60 mm, respectively. Soil moisture content in the surface layer varied from 21 to 45 and 21 to 42 percent, for calibration and validation treatments, respectively while the changes in the deep layer moisture content were 33 to 38 percent, for both treatments.

Abstract
Soil moisture is one of the main input parameters in many models for monitoring and predicting crop yield. The ability of mathematical models has allowed correct application of brackish water and selection of management options. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the performance of HYDRUS-2D for simulating soil volumetric water content in a heterogeneous heavy soil under field conditions. Three volumes of irrigation water (10, 15 and 20 L) and three salinity levels of irrigation water (1.279, 2.5 and 5 dSm-1) were exerted in a linear drip irrigation system with three replications. In order to check the amount of soil volumetric water content, soil profiles were drilled to 40 cm depth and vertical wall of drip irrigation line was networked. Soil volumetric water content was measured with a TDR MiniTrase kit 6050X3K1B model. The observed soil moisture values were compared with the simulated ones using statistical indices (i.e. nRMSE and CRM). The results indicated that mean soil volumetric water content distribution in irrigation water with different levels of salinities was in the range of field capacity. The range of nRMSE values varied from 0.91 to 2.07 percent in different replications. According to calculated nRMSE values, performance of the simulation model, was ranked as excellent for simulation of soil volumetric water content. Range of CRM values was shown to be from -0.0080 to 0.0170 that was really low. Results of these two statistics indicate high ability of the model in simulating soil volumetric water content using estimating hydraulic parameters by inverse solution.

Abstract
Heavy metals in dust can directly enter to the human body through ingestion and inhalation. They can pollute the water and soil resources via atmospheric precipitation and accumulate in the plant tissues and then enter human body through water and food. This research aimed to study the heavy metals concentration in dust in Kermanshah province and to identify their sources. 49 samples of dust were collected in the cities of Kermanshah, Songhor, Gilangharb, Ghasre-Shirin, Sahneh, Sarpolzahab, Kangavar, Paveh and Javanrood during the spring 2013. The concentration of Zn, Cu, Ni, Cr, Mn and Fe were determined using an atomic absorption spectrometer following the sample extraction with a mixture of HCL and HNO3 (3:1 ratio). The average concentrations of Zn, Cu, Ni, Cr, Mn and Fe were 182.3, 48.6, 115.3, 73.9, 428.1 and 23161 mg kg-1, respectively. Correlation, cluster and principal component analyses were used to identify probable natural and anthropogenic sources of contaminants, and the enrichment factor was used to identify probable effects of human activity on the concentration of heavy metals. The results indicated that metal concentrations, except for Fe and Mn, were higher in comparison with the world soils. Zn, Cu, Ni and Cr are mainly of anthropogenic origin, while Fe and Mn are mainly of natural origin. Zn and Cu are mainly of traffic sources and partly of industrial sources, and Ni and Cr are mainly derived from industrial sources, combustion processes, combined with traffic sources. The analysis of EF revealed moderate enrichment for Mn and Cr, and significant enrichment for Zn, Cu and Ni. Based on the results of this study, more attention should be paid to identifying and controlling the sources of contaminants such as heavy metals in dust in order to prevent their associated pollution.

Abstract
Water, as a limiting factor, has played a decisive role in shaping and development of Iranian culture and civilization. Water scarcity and a great variety of water users lead to conflicts in rivers' environment. Conflict resolution is conceptualized by the methods and processes involved in peaceful facilitating and ending of the conflict through active communication about their thinking and causes of disagreement as well as persistence in collective negotiations. Currently, the Zayandeh-Rud River basin (ZRR) has been facing severe water scarcity. The aim of this study is to evaluate the methods of water conflict resolution in the ZRR from the viewpoint of farmers and authorities. The statistical population of this study includes all farmers in ZRR and selected staff of Regional Water Authority and Agricultural Organization (Jahad-Keshavarzi) in both Isfahan and Chaharmahal & Bakhtiyari provinces. Data were collected through a sample of 171 farmers and census of authorities through face-to-face interviews based on a comprehensive structured questionnaire. Before the survey, the reliability and validity of the questionnaire was initially evaluated on a pre-test study respectively by using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient and Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) criteria. The results showed that the main factors in creating the conflict are drought, increased water use in industry and increased water consumption in other provinces. Furthermore, the most suitable methods of water conflict resolution are the conditions where everybody is able to speak freely, mediation and negotiation. On one hand, in the current situation, farmers prefer violent manners and on the other hand, authorities consider negotiation as the most appropriate solution to the conflict.

Abstract
Pollutants are considered the disturbing factors of environment, and among them the heavy metals are more important considering their non-degradability and physiological effects on organisms in low concentrations. The goal of this research was to investigate the effect of industrial landuse on Cd and Pb concentrations in surface soils of the southwest Isfahan. According to satellite images and topographic maps (1:50000) of the study area, soil samples (depth: 0–20 cm) were collected using random sampling. A total of 38 surface soil samples were obtained from industrial areas (lowest distance = 1480 m) in the area of 73481 ha. Total concentrations of Cd and Pb in the digested solution were measured by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS). Using Arc GIS, the spatial distribution patterns and Cd and Pb variography of samples were analysed and finally the best models of spatial distribution of heavy metals were achieved. The primary results showed that the mean concentrations of Cd, and Pb of surface soil samples in industrial areas were 1.8 to 31.5 mg Kg-1 higher than the world’s mean values, respectively. Although the mean concentrations of Cd and Pb were respectively 8 to 700 mg Kg-1 lower than the standard of Iranian Department of Environment for industrial landuse.

Abstract
Constant use of treated wastewater (TWW) for irrigation over long periods may cause buildup of heavy metals up to toxic levels for plants, animals, and entails environmental hazards in different aspects. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of using a deep emitter installation on lowering the potential heavy metal accumulation in soil and wheat grain, and health risk under drip irrigation with treated municipal wastewater. A field experiment was conducted according to a split block design with two treatments (fresh and wastewater) and three sub treatments (0, 15 and 30 cm depth of emitters) in four replicates in Esfahan, Iran. Soil samples were collected before planting (initial value) and after harvesting (final value) in each year. Elemental concentrations (Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Cr, and Ni) in soil and grain were determined using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. A pollution load index (PLI) showed that there was not substantial buildup of heavy metals in the wastewater-irrigated soils compared to the freshwater-irrigated soils. Cu, Pb, Cr and Zn concentrations in wheat grain were within permissible EPA limits, but concentrations of Cr was above the safe limits of EPA. In addition, concentrations of Ni in wheat grain were several folds higher than EPA standards. A health risk index (HRI) which is usually adopted to assess the health risk to hazard materials in foods showed values higher than 1 for Cd and Cu, whereas children might also be exposed to health risk of Cd, Cu and Cr. Based on aforementioned results, it can be concluded that the depth of emitter in drip irrigation does not play a significant role in the accumulation of heavy metals from TWW in our sandy loam soil.

Abstract
Today, modern irrigation systems are constructed at a very high cost to operate for optimal use of water and soil. Lack of appropriate technical, social and economic studies, caused high maintenance costs of these facilities during operation. Water resources have been polluted due to industrial development, increasing human population and non-compliance with environmental standards. Most of hydraulic structures are built in areas with poor water quality. Furthermore, engineering properties of fine-grained soils, especially the clay soils, depend on factors such as salinity of solute in the pore water. So that any change in salinity of solute leads to change in the physical and mechanical properties of soils, and consequently make damage to hydraulic structure. This study investigated the effect of water salinity on engineering properties of fine-grained soils. For this purpose, NaCl, with 5 different levels (0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.41 and 0.72 mol/L) was added to the soil and the mechanical properties of soil including compaction, shear parameters, Atterberg limits and consolidation parameters were investigated. The results showed that the addition of NaCl had made no significant changes to the maximum dry unit weight and optimum moisture content of the soil, but it reduced cohesion of soil and increased the internal friction angle .Also, Limit Liquid (LL) are decreased, but it had little effect on the Plastic Limit(PL) of soil.

Abstract
The aim of this work was to study distribution of some heavy metals in different soil particle-size fractions and to assess their spatial distribution. The study was carried out in Kafe Moor (Kerman, Iran) where the Gol-Gohar Iron Mine is located. One hundred twenty composite soil samples were randomly collected and transferred to the laboratory in bags. After air-drying, the samples were fractionated into six classes including 2- 0.5, 0.5-0.25, 0.25-0.125, 0.125- 0.075, 0.075-0.05 and <0.05 mm. Elemental concentrations (Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Pb and Ni) were determined using acid digestion method (HNO3, 4.0 N) and an atomic absorption spectrophotometer in each class. Ordinary Kriging technique was used for predicting spatial distribution of heavy metals. The results showed that content of metals in soil increased with decreasing particle size. The results also showed that the concentration of Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Pb and Ni in <0.05 mm size fraction were 2.13, 1.70, 4.79,2.43, 1.42, and 3.47 times higher than in 2-0.05 mm size fraction, respectively. In addition, mapping the concentrations of heavy metals with kiriging showed that metals pollution decreased with increasing distance from mines area.

Abstract
Water and soil pollution with heavy metals has become a worldwide environmental issue. Therefore, development of efficient and low-cost methods for removal of metals from water or metal stabilization in soil has been identified as priority research areas. Biochar, produced from plant biomass and agricultural wastes, has recently been used to remove heavy metals from aqueous solutions as an effective sorbent. In this study, biochars were made from pyrolysis of palm tree residues at different temperatures of 200, 400 and 600 °C. The prepared biochars were then used to remove Ni from aqueous solutions in batch systems without pH adjustment and with pH adjustment at 7. To investigate Ni sorption rate, kinetic experiments were also carried out at a Ni concentration of 10 mg/L. The results of kinetic tests showed that the biochar prepared at 600 °C had more Ni sorption rate with equilibration time of about 5 h. Power function and Elovich models were the best equations fitted the kinetic data. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms described sorption of Ni on the sorbents very well. According to the Langmuir model predictions, the biochar produced at 600 °C and the palm raw residues had highest and the lowest capacity to sorb Ni from the solution, respectively, and the biochars produced at 200°C and 400°C were intermediate in this respect. Both the capacity and affinity of the biochars for Ni sorption increased with pH. Overall, under the experimental conditions applied in this study, the biochar prepared at 600 °C showed the highest efficiency for Ni removal from aqueous solution.

Abstract
Today, the growth of population, the excessive growth of cities and subsequently, the industries development in all parts of the planet are evident. Such development leads to the entrance of chemical martials with various compounds, particularly heavy metals, in aquatic ecosystems. In this study, the contamination of the sediments around the Mighan wetland basin with heavy metals such as lead, zinc, copper and nickel was investigated using CF indexes (contamination factor), IGeo geo-accumulation indexes, and IPOLL sediment contamination severity. The results indicated a high concentration of copper and nickel metals, in comparison to zinc and lead metals, in the studied area. Also, regarding the location of sampling stations and their proximity of the industries around the wetland, the comparison of the results related to the measured metal concentration and the sediment quality indices, indicated a high concentration of the pollutants under examination in the southern part of the wetland, thereby emphasizing the need to control the pollutants in the wetland.

Abstract
Exploitation of dam reservoirs is one of the major problems in the management of water resources. In this research, Crow Search Algorithm (CSA) was used for the first time to manage the operation of reservoirs. Also, the results related to the exploitation of the single-reservoir system of Shahid-Rajaei dam, located in Mazandaran province, northern Iran, which meets the downstream water demands, were compared to those obtained by applying the Particle Swarm and Genetic algorithms. Time reliability, volume reliability, vulnerability and reversibility indices, and a multi-criteria decision-making model were used to select the best algorithm. The results showed that the CSA obtained results close to the problem’s absolute optimal response, such that the average responses in the Crow, Particle Swarm and Genetic Algorithms were 99, 75 and 61 percent of the absolute optimal response, respectively. Besides, except for the time reliability index, the CSA had a better performance in the rest of the indices, as compared to Particle Swarm and Genetic Algorithms. The coefficient of variation of the obtained responses by CSA was 14 and 16 times smaller than the Genetic and Particle Swarm Algorithms, respectively. The multi-criteria decision-making model revealed that the CSA was ranked first, as compared to the other two algorithms, in the Shahid-Rajaei Reservoir's operation problem.

Abstract
In this study, the distribution of heavy metals pollution including arsenic, antimony, nickel, copper, cadmium, cobalt, bismuth, lead and zinc in the stream sediments of Zarshuran- Aghdarreh area was investigated by using statistical techniques and the geometric integration of each sample basin. For this purpose, the degree of pollution in 154 stream sediment samples was analyzed and the distribution maps for enrichment factors were prepared by using a combination technique, pixel estimation, and statistical and geostatistical methods. The results of calculating the enrichment factors indicated that the higher enrichment was related to arsenic, antimony, bismuth, cadmium and lead. Furthermore, the concentration of zinc, copper, lead, arsenic, antimony, cadmium and bismuth in the stream sediment samples was higher than the global average. Application of the principal component analysis on the data led to the recognition of 9 main components for the dataset; the first 5 were components with eigen values greater than 1 and a cumulative percentage more than 85%. Arsenic, antimony, cadmium, lead and zinc in the first component, cobalt in the second component, bismuth in the third component, copper in the fourth component and nickel in the fifth component had the highest values.

Abstract
The concern about the war and the threat of terrorism and weapons application and prohibited weapons is growing; on the other hand, the contamination of soil, plant and disease outbreaks in the community is increasing. The main problem with crops, especially wheat in the contaminated soils of war zones, are associated with the high concentrations of heavy metals and toxic things, especially arsenic. Zeolite is one of the solutions to the problem of contaminated soils in war affected areas. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the ionic strength of zeolite on the adsorption of arsenic and nutritional properties of wheat in contaminated soils including weapons. The experiment was carried out in a factorial arrangement involving a randomized complete design with three replications. Treatments included four levels of zeolite 2.5 (a4), 1.5 (a3), 0.5 (a2), 0 (a1) percent of the weight of the soil and two soil recourses, one obtained from out of the war zone (without contamination) (b1) and other one was from the contaminated soil to weapons (b2). The results showed that soils contaminated by weapons increased the concentrations of arsenic in wheat. Also, with the application of Zeolite in the contaminated soil treatments, there was a significant reduction at 1% level and a remarkable increase in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and calcium in the wheat grain in both soils.

Abstract
Alginate biopolymer, due to possessing a high capacity and affinity for heavy metals, is a suitable material for the removal of metals from polluted waters; however, the weak structural consistency of alginate hydogels limits the practical application of this natural polymer in water purification practices. In this study, sepiolite clay mineral was used as a solidifier of alginate hydrogel to produce hybrid materials with different clay:alginate ratios (1:2, 1:4 and 1:8). Subsequently, the sorption of Pb by the prepared hybrid materials was studied in different Pb concentrations (25 to
2000 mg/L) and temperatures (15, 25, 35 and 45 °C). The results showed that the Langmuir and freundlich equations could significantly describe Pb sorption data on the sorbents. Based on the Langmuir model estimation, alginate showed and sepiolite showed the highest and lowest capacities for Pb sorption, respectively; also, the hybrids were intermediates in this respect. The capacity and affinity of all sorbents were enhanced with increasing the temperature from 15 to 45 °C. Standard enthalpy changes (ΔH°) were found to be positive, confirming that the process of Pb sorption on the sorbents was endothermic. Positive values were also obtained for the standard entropy changes (ΔS°), suggesting increased randomness at the solid-solution interface during the sorption of Pb ions on the sorbents. The values of the standard free energy change (ΔG°) were negative for all different temperatures, thereby indicating that sorption on the sorbents was spontaneous and favorable. Overall, it could be concluded that modification of alginate with sepiolite might cause the decreased sorption capacity of alginate; however, the hybrid materials are good candidates for the Pb removal from aqueous solutions because of their high sorption capacities.

Abstract
Detergents are the main organic pollutants in the industrial and domestic wastewater. Electro-chemistry methods are advanced purification methods developed with high efficiency features. The goal of this study was to investigate the possibility of using electrocoagulation and the complementary flocculation process to achieve the highest removal efficiency of the detergent COD. So, with iron electrode, synthetic samples at the concentrations of 500, 750 and 1000 mg/l (with COD of 217, 268 and 370 mg/l, respectively) and with the initial pH levels of 5, 7.3 and 9 were tested. Variable parameters during the electrocoagulation process included the current duration at 3, 5 and 10 minutes, and the current density was at 4, 10, 16 and 22 mA/cm2. The primary results showed that in the optimum conditions, the coagulation process and complementary flocculation could reduce the sample’s COD with an initial concentration of detergent (500 mg/l) from 217 mgO2/l to 81.30 mgO2/l. The electrocoagulation method could reduce the chemical oxygen demand to below the standard limit of environmental discharge (200 mgO2/l) and compensate for the possibility of the irrigation of green spaces due to water shortages.
