Abstract

Two hundred Arian broiler chicks were used to investigate the effect of contents of dietary glucosinolates on performance of broiler chicks during starter (0-21 days of age) and grower periods (22-42 days of age) in a completely randomized design. The dietary glucosinolates contents in the starter period were 0 (S1), 7.5 (S2), 15 (S3), 22.5 (S4), 30 (S5) µmol/g and in the grower period they were 0 (G1), 5.7 (G2), 11.4 (G3), 17.1 (G4), 22.8 (G5) µmol/g. Feed intake during the grower period was affected (P<0.05) by different levels of glucosinolates in the diets and the lowest feed intake was observed in the G5 treatment. The lowest body weight gains were observed in the S5 and G5 treatments during the starter and grower periods, respectively (P<0.05). The feed conversion ratio (FCR) in the S5 treatment for the starter and the G5 treatment for the grower period were significantly different (P<0.05) from other treatments. The correlation between the body weight gain and level of dietary glucosinolates or glucosinolate consumption was high during the starter (r = -95.3% and -94.7%, respectively) and relatively high (r = -69.5% and -72.4%, respectively) during the grower period. This experiment showed that the amount of glucosinolates in the diets of broiler chicks for the periods of starter and grower feeding system should not be more than 11.36 and 8.11µmol/g diet, respectively. Also during the starter and grower feeding periods, the highest level of rapeseed meal could be used in the broiler diets are 13 and 8 percent, respectively.

Abstract

Aqueous extraction of gum from flaxseed was optimized using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). In this study the effect of temperature (45-100 °C), pH (3-7) and water/seed ratio (4-24), on the dependent variables including: yield, protein and apparent viscosity of extracted gum were investigated. The results showed that temperature and pH are two major effective factors on yield and quality of extracted gum (purity and apparent viscosity), whereas water/seed ratio had minor effects. The optimized conditions of extraction were as follows: temperature 85- 90 oC pH 6.5- 7.0 and water/seed ratio 14. Apparent viscosities of extracted gums were determined and the effect of extraction conditions on rheological properties of flaxseed gum was investigated.

Abstract

To compare the relative value of the fish meal and the cottonseed meal in highly fermentable diets (40% forage and 60% concentrate with), eight cows were assigned randomly to diets with 0, 1.5, 3 and 4.5 percent of the fish meal. In the first experiment, the degradability of dry matter and crude protein of the fish meal, the cottonseed meal and concentrate in diets was estimated with different incubation times (0, 4, 8, 12 and 24 h) with fistulated Ghezel sheep fed at maintenance level. The effective degradability of dry matter and the crude protein of fish meal was significantly lower than cottonseed meal (p<0.05). In different concentrates, there was no significant difference in effective degradability of dry matter but with the increase of fish meal the effective degradability of crude protein decreased significantly. In the second experiment, the eight multiparous Holstein cows with the similar milk production (25.37 ± 0.85) were examined in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design with the 21-day period. There were no significant differences between the treatments in digestibility of OM, OM and CP, the dry matter intake, 3.2 % FCM, milk fat (%), milk lactose (%), milk total solid (%), and the yield of the milk fat, feed efficiency and body weights. Diets containing fish meal, compared to the control group, significantly higher milk production, milk protein (%), the yield of milk protein and lactose (p < 0.1), but the different levels of fish meal had no significant effect on these factors. The urea pH decreased significantly with the increase of the fish meal but rumen pH and fecal pH were unaffected. The results of the experiment indicated that diets with the 1.5 or 3% fish meal in cows with less than 30 kg milk is recommended.

Abstract

Whole plant sunflower and sunflower without head were ensiled in plastic containers using additives in a 2×2×2×2 factorial arrangement in a completely randomized design with three replicates. Additives were molasses, urea (at 4 and 0.5 percent wet basis respectively), and a bacterial inoculant (Agros 6gr/ton of forage as manufacture’s instruction). Compared with silages without head, ensiling sunflower as whole plant resulted in lower pH, neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and ash versus higher concentrations of crude protein and ether extract (EE). No significant effect of seed was observed on lactic acid concentration and dry matter degradability (P<0.05). With the addition of molasses, the cell wall components and the EE concentrations reduced, but dry matter content increased. Highest degradability of dry matter was also observed in molasses-treated silages (average 58.04, P<0.007). With the addition of urea a significant increase was seen in CP content of either whole plant or headless silages (P<0.0001) with no effect on other fermentation characteristics. Bacterial inoculation of silages elevated the levels of lactic acid (2.81% DM) with more pronounced effect on headless than whole plant silages. Regardless of type of additives, butyric acid concentrations were ideally minimal (near to 2%) indicating least clostridial damage. The qualitative visual evaluation of the silage on the basis of scale of 1-20 for the smel, colour and structure of the silage and giving number to the mold damage on the basis of 1-10 placed all the treatment in an acceptable quality, although the mold damage was highest in silages without molasses. Results of this experiment indicated that better quality of silalges could be provided by adding molasses and ensiling whole plant sunflower. Improving quality of silages contained molasses might necesitate the additiion of a source of water-soluble carbohydrate at ensiling.

Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of four levels of irrigation (irrigation of plants after I1 = 40, I2 =60, I3 = 80 , and I4 = 100mm of evaporation from class A pan) and four plant densities(D1 = 30, D2 = 40, D3 = 50 and D4 = 60 plants/m2) on the seed yield and seed quality in three soybean cultivars(V1=Hobit, V2=Williams and V3=Hill) in a split factorial design, based on the completely randomized blocks, with three replication for two years(2001 and 2002). The Irrigation treatments were assigned to the main plots, and the plant densities and cultivars to the sub plots. Results indicated that soybean seed yield was influenced by the different irrigation and plant density levels in the both years. Irrigation levels I2 produced the highest and I4 the lowest seed yield. It was also revealed that the plant density D3 produced the highest and D1 the lowest seed yields. Among the cultivars under investigation, V2 produced the highest and V3 the lowest seed yield . Seed oil and its protein contents both were affected significantly by the irrigation levels, plant densities and cultivars in both years. The plants receiving I1 treatment had the highest and those having I4, the lowest percentages of seed oil. Changes in the plant densities also affected seed oil and protein content. The plant density of D1 caused the seeds to have the highest oil and lowest protein percentages. However, D4 decreased oil and increased protein percentages. The highest water use efficiency was obtained from I3 and that of the lowest value from I1. The results also indicated that D4 had the highest and D1 the lowest water use efficiencies. Therefore, it could be concluded that the water use efficiency can be increased by increasing the plant density per unit area. The highest efficiency for biological and grain yield belonged to V2 and V1 respectively where as the lowest efficiency for those two mentioned characters belonged to V1 and V3, respectively. However, the treatment I2V2D2 is recommended for higer the seed yield production per unit area.

Abstract

Under irrigation and in double-cropping system, a large amount of plant residue remains after harvest that along with the limited time for residue decomposition and complete seedbed preparation, necessitates reduced tillage and special residue management. In the present study, the effects of various seedbed preparation methods on vegetative growth, yield components and seed and oil yields of sunflower (Euroflor hybrid) were studied in a barley-sunflower cropping system during 2001 at the Agricultural Research Station, Isfahan University of Technology. Three residue management treatments (standing, partly removed and burned) along with five tillage systems (moldboard + disk chisel + disk disk moldboard and furrower as the minimum tillage) were laid out in a split-block design with three replications. Burning residue treatment significantly increased plant dry weight at various developmental stages and also head diameter. Number of seeds per head, 1000 seed weight, harvest index, and oil yield were non-significantly higher in the burned residue treatment. Seed yield was significantly higher in the burned and partly removed residue treatments. Moldboard + disk and chisel + disk treatments significantly produced higher plant dry weight at various developmental stages, head diameter and seed yield. Number of seeds per head, 1000 seed weight, harvest index, and oil yield were non-significantly higher in these treatments. Minimum tillage ranked the lowest for these traits. The results of this experiment indicate that chisel + disk treatment with the partly removed residues might be an appropriate seedbed preparation method in a barley-sunflower double planting under conditions similar to this experiment.

Abstract

To evaluate seed germination and seedling growth of safflower in moisture stress, germination of 15 genotypes at four water potential levels (ψ: 0, -0.4, -0.8 and –1.2 Mpa) was tested by Polyethylene glycol (PEG6000). Maximum germination (Gmax), germination rate index (GRI), time length to reach 50% germination (T50), rootlet length (RL) and shootlet length (SL) were investigated. Effects of water potential levels and genotypes were significant for all the characteristics studied. Minimum water potential for germination was estimated between –1.17 and –1.59 Mpa in Goshkhani and LRV-51-51 genotypes, respectively. Different responses to moisture stress were found for rootlet length. In lower potential levels, seedlings had longer, weaker and thiner rootlets in comparison to the zero water potential (control). An increase in stress to –1.2 Mpa led to a severe reduction in rootlet elongation. All stress levels decreased GRI and SL, while potentials lower than –0.4 Mpa decreased Gmax. With a decrease in water potential from 0 to –0.8 Mpa, the T50stage was delayed three-fold compared to the control. Exotic genotypes had longer T50 stage than Iranian genotypes. The highest GRI was related to three Iranian genotypes LRV-51-51, Varamin 295, and Isfahan local, and the lowest was related to CW-74 exotic genotype. Some of genotypes were evaluated for seed yield, oil yield and seed oil percentage under rainfed condition in 2004-05. The highest oil yield average belonged to two exotic genotypes PI- 537598 and Lesaf (326.4 and 313.9 Kg/ha, respectively) and the least was related to Zarqhan 279 Iranian genotype (133.2 Kg/ha). Negative and significant correlation was observed between seed oil percentage and GRI in the 0, -0.8 Mpa potential levels. According to the results, the existing genetic variation for germination parameters can be used for genetic improvement of seed early vigor in safflower.

Abstract

To investigate the effects of different irrigation levels on yield and oil content of rapeseed, and to determine the irrigation requirement and irrigation scheduling, an experiment with Randomized Complete Block Design consisting of four irrigation treatments replicated 3 times, was conducted in Zarghan Agric. Expt. Station during the years of 2000-2003. The treatments were based on the cumulative evaporation values of 50, 75,100 and 125 mm from class A pan (T50, T75, T100 and T125). The depth of water for each treatment was determined according to the deficit of field capacity and soil moisture content before irrigation. In the three years of experiment, the cultivars: Okapi, Orient and Likord were cultivated and the annual data related to yield and seed oil contents of each cultivar was analyzed separately. In the first year of experiment, the effect of different treatments on yield of Okapi cultivar was not significant, but the maximum and minimum yields were obtained at the T75 and T100 treatments equal to 2678 and 2050 kg ha-1, respectively. The effect of different treatments on seed oil content was significant at the level of 5 %, and the maximum and minimum seed oil contents were obtained at the T100 and T75 treatments equal to 42.50 and 41.66 %, respectively. In the second year of experiment, the effect of different treatments on the yield of Orient cultivar was significant at the level of 5 %, and the maximum and minimum yields were obtained at the T50 and T125 treatments equal to 3133 and 2133 kg ha-1, respectively. The effect of different treatments on seed oil content was significant at the level of 5 %, and the maximum and minimum seed oil contents were obtained at the T75 and T50 treatments equal to 46.38 and 44.82 %, respectively. In the third year of experiment, the effect of different treatments on the yield of Likord cultivar was significant at the level of 5 %, and the maximum and minimum yields were obtained at the T50 and T125 treatments equal to 3667 and 2250 kg ha-1, respectively. The effect of different treatments on seed oil content was significant at the level of 1 %, and the maximum and minimum seed oil contents were obtained at the T50 and T125 treatments equal to 47.63 and 44.60 %, respectively. Also, the best irrigation frequency for the three rapeseed cultivars in the Zarghan area was obtained equal to 10 to 12 days.

Abstract

This research was conducted to investigate the changes of GA3-like substances in the stratified (0, 10, 20, 30 days at 10oC) and non-stratified seeds of two olive cultivars, namely ‘Arbequina’ and ‘Zard’. In the first experiment stratified seeds of these cultivars (10 g) were extracted with ethanol (80%), purified by ethyl acetate, and then separated by thin layer chromatography (TLC). To compare the biological activity of separated zones, lettuce hypocolyl assauy was used. The results obtained in this part of study indicated that the amount of GA3-like substances increased as the stratification period increased. In the second experiment extracts were made from different parts of non-stratified seeds of both cultivars. The result of the second experiment showed that the GA3–like substances of embryos of non-stratified seeds were higher than other parts of the seed.

Abstract

Ferula ovina is one of forage species of Isfahan and Chaharmahal va Bakhtiari whose natural spreads are under destruction. Finding information about its seed dormancy, effective factors in the dormancy breaking and also about optimal conditions of seed germination is necessary for recovery of this plant spreads. To actieve that goal, two factorial experiments were performed in completely randomize design. First experiment was performed with 6 replications for evaluation of effect of seed age, light and cold duration factors on seed germination percentage. In the second experiment, the effect of cold duration and seed age on T50 Ferula seed was investigated in 3 replications. The results showed that one-year storage reduced seed germination percentage, but this reduction was not statistically significant. One-year-old seeds compared to freshly harvested seeds showed greater T50 which indicate the reduction of seed vigor and germination velocity. Data analysis showed that light effect was significant at 1% level. The germination rate in the light was 45.6% greater than in darkness. Therefore, Ferula seeds were positive photoblastic and their germination depended on light. Also, moist chilling had significant influence on Ferula seed germination. Moist prechilling for 7-9 weeks was the best treatment for dormancy breaking of Ferula seeds. This improved seed vigor and enhanced rate of germination but it could not replace light effect. In either situation, light was required during the germination test for optimal results. The need to cold and light may be in the direction of adaptation to ecologyical conditions naturally found in the habitat of this plant in Chaharmahal.

Abstract

Rape seed (Brassica napus L.) containing more than 40 per cent oil is one of the best oilseeds for cultivation in Iran. Sclerotinia stem rot is one of the important diseases of the rape seed, the causal agent being Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. The aim of our study was to assess the effect of the disease on the quantity and quality of the extracted oil and remaining foodstuff in a field experiment. In this research three cultivars including Okapi, SLM046 and Talayeh were examined under field conditions using a factorial design (cultivars and inoculations were two factors under study). The cultivars were inoculated with SK4 isolate of S. sclerotiorum. The inoculation was done on the plant stems at 30 cm height above the soil using Lewartosca method during mid flowering stage. One thousand- seed weight and glucosinolate, erucic and oleic fatty acids contents of the seeds were determind after the harvest. The results indicated that the infected plants in comparision with the controls had a lower 1000- seed weight and oleic acid content and a higher glucosinolates and erucic acid contents. There were significant differences among the genotypes in respect to all the studied traits except 1000- seed weight. Inverse correlation was observed between 1000- seed weight and erucic acid content or oil glucosinolates contents. It was concluded that the disease can reduce quantity and quality of seed oil and other nutrient contents.

Abstract

In this paper, the effect of irrigation water salinity levels on seed germination, dry matter weight of seedlings at eight-leave stage, and the salt tolerance of 8 rapeseed cultivars was investigated. Relative yield reduction in saline and non saline conditions, salt sensitivity index and Van Genuchten-Hoffman methods were used to determine the salt tolerance of the cultivars. Results showed that the effect of different salt levels, cultivars and their interactions on germination and dry matter weight of seedlings was significant at 0.01(the higher the salt level, the lower the germination and dry matter). Also, using the Van Genuchten-Hoffman method, the irrigation water salinity corresponding to 10%, 25%, 50% and 90% reducts in germination and dry matter of seedlings were determined. Statistical analysis showed that a single cultivar gives different responses to salinity during growth stages and it may be tolerant in one stage, but sensitive to salinity in another growth stage. In this research, ACSN1, Falcon, and Shirali in germination stage and ACSN1, Falcon, and Cobra in seedling growth stage were salt tolerant. The three cultivars Oyerka, Global, and Ceres and the next three Shirali, Global, and Oyerka were sensitive to salinity in germination and seedling growth stages, respectively. Finally, the ACSN1 and Falcon cultivars were introduced as salt tolerant, and Oyerka and Global were considered as salt sensitive.

Abstract

Today, the production of disease-free and identical rootstock seedling in protected environments is a common practice in citrus industry. The process is time consuming, laborious and expensive. Shortening the period to reach suitable size for budding results in the reduction of the costs. It is possible to shorten the period for budding in citrus seedlings through the application of growth regulators. As lime is used widely as a rootstock in Southern Iran, this research attempted to study the effect of paclobutrozol (PP333), ethephon and pinching following gibberellic acid (GA3) treatment on height, diameter and budtake of lime seedlings. To do the research, seedlings with 4-6 leaves were sprayed with 100 mg/L GA3. After GA3 treatment, uniform seedlings 50 cm height were selected, potted and sprayed with PP333 (500 and 1000 mg/L), ethephon (150 and 300 mg/L) or pinched. All treatments, compared with control, increased height, diameter and fresh weight of shoot significantly. GA3 alone caused internode elongation. The effect of all treatments on the number of node, fresh and dry weights of root was not significant. Ethephon reduced chlorophyll content of leaf. And ethephon (300 mg/L) and PP333 (1000 mg/L) reduced budtake percentage of lime seedlings.

Abstract

This study was carried out to evaluate the yield potential and other agronomic traits of nine genotypes of flax at two different spring planting dates: April 4 and May 5, 2003 and 2004, using a randomized complete block design with three replications at the Research Farm of Shahrekord University. The results showed that the effects of planting date and genotypes were significant on all of the traits, and the genotypes had a great genetic variation. On average, the range of number of seedlings/m2, maturity, plant height, yield/plant, seed yield and seed oil content of genotypes were 306 to 464, 93.3 to 105.1 days, 28.8 to 58.2cm, 0.274 to 0.569g, 995 to 1423 kg/ha and 32.88 to 34.83%, respectively. The lowest mean of plant height and the highest mean of seed yield/ha were observed for Kordestan local population. Late planting significantly decreased the number of seedlings/m2, days to maturity, plant height, yield/plant and seed yield/ha, while this increased seed oil content. Average of seed yield/plant and seed yield/ha in the first and second planting dates were, respectively 0.506 and 0.414g, and 1598 and 811 kg/ha. Significant interaction of genotype by planting date for seed yield/ha and seed oil content was mostly due to the variation in the reduction of seed yield and increasing or decreasing of seed oil content in some genotypes in the second planting date. The genotypes had a variation of 1358 to 1784 and 632 to 1088 kg/ha for seed yield in the first and second planting dates, respectively. The local population of Kordestan had the highest mean of seed yield in both years. The results of regression analysis and also the correlation coefficients showed that the number of seedlings/m2 and seed yield/plant had the most contribution to the seed yield variation. The trait of number of seeds/capsule and number of capsules/plant were the main and most important yield components affected on seed yield/plant and due to can be used as selection criteria in selection programs to improve seed yield.

Abstract

Canola (Brassica napus) is one of the important oil seed crops cultivated in many parts of Iran. One of the main problems of seed production of canola is pollination and fertilization of flowers. Insects are the major pollinators. In order to study the fauna of insect pollinators of 3 cultivars of canola including Talaye, Okapi and S.L.M. and the difference between the attractiveness of these cultivars to insects during the flowering period, insects were collected by sweeping net and identified. Their abundance was determined at different periods of time during a day. Results showed that insect pollinators belonged to five orders and 18 families. The most abundant pollinators were Hymenopterous insects specialy honey bees (Apis mellifera) which were about 50%. Irrespective of Apis mellifera, the most abundant insects captured belonged to Diptera. Three Dipterous insects, Bibio hortulanus, Metasyrphus corollae and Platypalpus sp. were collected and identified. During the flowering period (March to mid April) in Isfahan, honey bees were more abundant in the warmer hours of the day, mostly noon and afternoon, but were less active in the early hours of the day, morning, because of cold weather and low nectar production. Honey bees were more active than other pollinators on Talaye at 9 a.m. and on Okapi at mid-day, noon, and during afternoon. Results also showed that insect pollinators could increase seed yield by 53%.

Abstract

A total of 25 advanced rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) varieties were evaluated under cold weather conditions using Randomized Complete Block design (RCBD) with four replications in Dr. Nakhjavani Agricultural Research Station, 35 km North-East of Urmia the capital of West Azerbaijan province in 2000-2001. The results showed significant differences among the varieties (P ≥ 0.01) for all the phenological stages including days to germination, days to rosette completion, days to initiation of stem elongation, days to flowering initiation, pod formation stage and days to maturity. The spring varieties Sarigol (PF7045/91), Hyola 42 and SYN1 and autumnal varieties Alice, Eurol, Fornax, VDH 8003-98, Consul, Licord and Zarfam (Regent× Cobra), showed early maturity. On the other hand, Mohican, Olara, Colvert, L-1 and Akamar were late mature varieties. In fact, the most prolific varieties, DP.94.8, Zarfam (Regent ×Cobra) Cocktail, Consul and SLM046 (control variety) had the highest ability survive in the cold conditions and they completed their rosette stage sooner than the other varieties. There was positive and significant correlation between duration of pod formation stage and seed yield. Maturity date of varieties was positively and significantly correlated with harvest index, number of seed per pod, days to germination, days to rosette completion, days to stem elongation, days to flowering, and days to pod formation. Negative and significant correlations were found between days to maturity and duration of flowering and pod formation stages. It can be concluded that delay in initiation or completion of each growth stages could delay maturity of the rapeseed varieties.

Abstract

Seed traits are an important measure of the effects of endophytic fungi in Festuca genus. In this study, endophyte-infected (E+) and un-infected (E-) clones of the same tall fescue genotypes were used to investigate the effects of endophyte on the seed production and associated traits. Endophyte infection resulted in 32.8% increase of total seeds by weight, 34.6% seeds per plant, and 30.6% panicles per plant, but other seed components were not affected by endophyte. Significant phenotypic variances were observed for traits except for 1000 seed weight. Plant genotype×fungal status interactions occurred for seed per plant. These interactions occurred largely because of variation in different plant genotypes. Genetic variance for this trait in E+ was greater than E- for both years, suggesting that the endophyte can mask plant genotypic variance. The results indicated that endophyte had a positive effect on seed production but could result in overestimating of plant genetic variance for some traits. In conclusion, breeding strategies should consider presence or absence of endophyte and the possible effects on variances.

Abstract

Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) can have an important role in vegetable oil production. Also, appropriate soil fertility is necessary to obtaine higher seed yield and quality of the crop. This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of fertilizer treatments of macro and micronutrients on seed yield and other agronomic traits in sunflower. The effects of thirteen fertilizer treatemts (as main factor) were investigated on agronomoic traits of two hybrid cultivars, "HiSun33" and "Euroflor" (as sub factor) in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The results showed that there was significant interaction between fertilizer treatments and cultivars for most of the traits and the effects of fertilizer treatments were dependent on the cultivar. Almost all of the fertilizer treatments of N, P, K, Fe, Zn and Mn either significantly or non-significantly decreased the means of head diameter, 1000-seed weight, seed yield/plant, seed yield and oil yield in Euroflor cultivar however, in HiSun33 cultivar, each of N, P, and K fertilizers had no significant effect on seed yield. Application of Zn and Mn fertilizer in soil or spraying them on plants had no significant effect on seed yield and yield components in HiSun33 cultivar however, application of Fe feritilizer (Sequestrene) significantly increased the seed yield of this cultivar and had no significant effect on its seed oil. In HiSun33, seed yield and oil content for treatments of control, NPK and NPK+Fe were 4946, 5155 and 7090 kg/ha and 40.72, 43.10 and 43.07 %, respectively. The effects of fertilizer treatments on oil concentration of seed were not significant, thus the variation of oil yield was due to the seed yield. The correlation coefficients and regression analysis showed that seed weight and head diameter were most important seed yield components,. In general, it seems that in a soil conditions like that of this experiment, Fe fertilizer can increase seed and oil yield in HiSun33 cultivar.

Abstract

To determine the effects of different intensities of leaf removal at different reproduction stages of sunflower on seed yield and oil percentage, and the most sensitive stages to defoliation, an experiment was carried out by split-spilt plot design in randomized complete block with 3 replications at research farm, College of Agric. Urmia University, in 2004. The main factor, sub factor and sub-sub factor in our experiment were: 1. two cultivars, Uroflor and Alstar, 2. defoliation at four reproduction stages, star shape of inflorescence (R2), pollination stage (R5), seed setting initiation (R6) and final period of seed setting (R7), and 3. four defoliation intensities ( 0% as an undefoliated control, 25%, 50% and 75% ). Seeding was accomplished on May 23. Average triple factor interactions verified that different defoliations at R2 stage have significantly reduced seed yield and oil percentage of both Uroflor and Alstar cultivars. Out of this reduction, 75 percent defoliation at R2 was the most, while at R5 and R6 stages 50 and 75 defoliation caused significant reduction on seed yield in comparison with control. At R7 stage different defoliations had no significant effect on seed yield of Uroflor cultivar, while, on Alstar cultivar, 75 percent defoliation at R7 stage caused significant difference in relation to control. Also average triple interaction among factors showed that none of defoliation percentages had significant effect on oil percentage. In view of the fact that, seed development and filling occurred after defoliation at R2 and R5 , the most variation resulted from defoliation of valued traits like number of filled seed per head and weight of 1000 seeds, observed at R2 and R5 stages and consequently reduced seed and oil yields. On the bases of this experiment it could be concluded that sunflower cultivation with losses of 50 and 75 percent will be economically unprofitable and it will be more desirable to replace it with any other suitable crop in the region.

Abstract

Pollination and fertilization of canola flowers are the main factors of canola seed production. In order to study the effects of insect pollinators on seed quantity and quality of three chosen cultivars of canola, namly, S.L.M., Okapi and Talaye, a split plot experiment in a complete randomized block design with four replications was carried out in Isfahan region. Main plots consisted of canola cultivars, and subplots consisted of open pollination and non-pollination by insects. Results indicated that the time to seed ripening in pollinated plots was 10.5 days less than those of non-pollinated plots. Pollination by insects increased the number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod and weight of 1000 seeds, by 14.3%, 23.5% and 10%, respectively. Grain yield also increased by 53% in pollinated plots. Pollination decreased seed moisture percentage by 3.15%, but its effect on seed oil percentage and germination percentage were not significant. Time to seed germination of plants of pollinated plots decreased three hours. Cultivars were significantly different in seed oil percentage and time to seed germination. Talaye cultivar produced the highest amount of oil (45.5%), while Okapi produced the lowest (40.8%). There were significant interactions between cultivars and pollination in terms of seed ripening, oil percentage and moisture of seeds, and the effects of pollination was different in different cultivars.
