Abstract

Land use is one of the basic factors for controlling the hydrologic behavior of watersheds. Therefore, it is generally assumed that land use change is the cause of variation in hydrological dynamic of watersheds. In this paper, the land use effect in present and optimum conditions on sedimentation of watershed was studied using GIS and applying the HEC-HM model in Shoor-Shirin watershed in Fars province. Land use map was provided based on curve number map, and this map was considered as the important factor for HEC-HM model. The results showed that the estimated sediments in two different conditions were completely different. In fact, the estimated sediment in the optimum condition was 12% less than the current land use. This means that land use change and land use type play important roles in decreasing or increasing the peak flow and erosion.

Abstract

Erosion and sedimentation as a river natural behavior lead to the loss of soil and cause irreparable damages to water development projects. Since the phenomenon of erosion and deposition is one of the most complex natural processes, the complete understanding of the effective factors involved in this phenomenon is really a big problem. This study was done to optimize the parameters affecting sediment yield and determine their sensitivity in the Doiraj river basin in the West of Iran, using SWAT, a semi-distributed model, and SUFI2 algorithm, and the monthly sediment yield from 1994 to 2004. In the first run of the model, coefficients R2, NS, and Br2 were respectively obtained as 0.43, 0.39 and 0.28. The results showed that performance of the model with the default data was not satisfactory and we needed to determine the used optimal values. Then, the optimal values of parameters were determined using SUFI2 algorithm and reverse modeling and the model was run with the new values. Based on the new results, coefficients R2, NS, and Br2 were respectively obtained as 0.75, 0.73 and 0.65 and performance of the model improved and its accuracy increased acceptably. In the next step, from among the studied 30 parameters, (CH_N2), (USLE_K), (USLE_P) and (OV_N) were identified as the important parameters effective in the output of the sediment yield from basin. Also, USLE_K as was diagnosed as the most sensitive parameter. Results of this survey can be used in the management of the effective parameters in sediment load. Determining exact values of the effective parameters in other studies can be helpful to improve the simulation results in similar basins, too.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to assess the kinetics of nonexcheangable potassium release in surface and subsurface soil horizons, using organic and inorganic extractions, in Kohgilouye-va-Boyerahmad Province. Kinetics of K+ release was studied by successive extractions of K from 64 selective surface and subsurface soil samples, using 0.01 M CaCl2 and 0.01 M oxalic acid, for 1948 h, with two replicates. Nonexchangeable K+ release was fitted by Elovich, Pseudo-first order, Power function and Parabolic equations. Result showed that the average nonexchangeable K+ released (extracted by 1M HNO3) was 356 mg/kg, while those extracted by CaCl2 and oxalic acid after 1948 h were only 58% and 52% of the total amount of nonexchangeable K+ of the soils, respectively. In all soil samples, nonexchangeable K+ released by oxalic acid was less than that released by CaCl2, due to the high buffering capacity resulting from high carbonates in the soils. Potassium release rate in Elovich and Parabolic equations were significantly correlated with non-exchangeable potassium and some physical and chemical characteristics.  Based on high Coefficients of determination (r2) and low Standard errors (SE), Elovich, Power function, First order and Parabolic equations were selected as the best equations for prediction of K+ release from the soils.

Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of poultry manure (PM) and its derived biochars on chemical properties of a sample calcareous soil. Poultry manure and its derived biochars at 200(B200), 300(B300) and 400(B400)°C were incorporated with 400 g of soil at 2% level (w/w) and incubated for 150 days. Some chemical properties of soil and bio-availability of some nutritional ingredients such as phosphorous, potassium, iron, manganese, zinc and copper were determined at different times of incubation. Soil nutrients availability, organic carbon (OC), electrical conductivity (EC) and cation exchange capacity (CEC) increased by addition of all these organic substances. Biochars prepared at higher temperatures were more effective in increasing soil OC and its durability. Addition of PM and B200 decreased soil pH, whereas B400 increased it. Although highest soil EC was observed in B300 and B400 treated samples in the early stages of incubation, the rate of increasing in soil EC was higher at PM and B200 treated samples. In general, it was concluded that biochar prepared at 300°C had the highest effect on availability of nutrients and their durability in the soil.

Abstract

Drought is a climatic anomaly that associates with a significant decrease (lack) of precipitation and water resources availability, which spreads on vast temporal and spatial scales, and significantly affects various aspects of life and environment. One of the most common methods of drought assessing and monitoring is calculating drought indices (DIs). Drought areal and temporal extent and its severity are determined by these indices. In this study, an aggregate drought index (Hydro-Meteorological) has been developed for the assessment of hydrological and meteorological droughts in Sarbaz river basin located in southeastern of Iran. The Aggregate Drought Index (ADI) comprehensively considers all physical forms of drought (meteorological, hydrological, and agricultural) through selection of variables that are related to each drought type. In this case, monthly values of Stream flow Drought Index (SDI) and Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) indicators were used for four similar reference periods with principle component analysis and aggregate hydro-meteorological index was defined based on its first component. The study time span was set between 1981-82 to 2010-11, which begins of October in Iran. Results based on the aggregate drought index (ADI) revealed that a long period of hydro-meteorological drought occurred from 1999-2000 to 2005/06 in southeast of Iran, in which, 2003/04 water year has been extremely a drought year. The ADI methodology provides a clear, objective approach for describing the intensity of drought. This index is appropriately able to represent the behavior of Hydro-Meteorological droughts and recommended as an integrated index for assessing and monitoring of regional droughts. Finally, different states of hydro-meteorological drought have been extracted based on conventional regional thresholds, and have been modeled by Markov chain. This made the estimation of drought state transition frequency possible, and made the prediction of next drought state time more real. State transition frequency matrices, are the main instruments for predicting drought states in real time. Results of validation tests and conforming the predicted results with real data indicate that predicting hydrological drought state transitions in the study area using Markov chain method is valid.

Abstract

Urea is one of the most commonly used nitrogen fertilizers in agricultural lands. The fate of this fertilizer in soils is greatly related to the soil urease enzyme activity, while this enzyme commonly exists in the adsorbed state on the surface of soil colloids, and especially clay minerals. In order to examine the kinetic properties of free and adsorbed Urease on the surface of sepiolite and vermiculite, an experiment was carried out with eight levels of urea concentration (5, 10, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100 and 120 mM). This experiment was done with enzyme concentration of 1 unit in temperature of 25˚C and pH=7. Adsorption of urease on the clay surfaces affected its kinetic properties compared to the free state. The results showed that urease enzyme obeyed Michaelis-Menten kinetic in both free and adsorbed states on the clay surfaces. Except free urease, the highest and lowest values of Vmax and Km were observed in urease-sepiolite and urease-vermiculite complexes, respectively. Also, the results showed that except free urease, the highest levels of Catalytic Efficiency were related to urease in the presence of vermiculite and sepiolite, respectively. The Effectiveness Factor was more for adsorbed urease on the sepiolite surface than adsorbed urease on the vermiculite surface, and the fact somehow suggests more complete diffusion in the presence of sepiolite.

Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of poultry manure (PM) and derived biochars on phosphorous (P) availability and apparent recovery in a calcareous soil. Treatments consisted of four rates of P (0, 30, 60 and 90 µgg-1) and five organic substances (blank, poultry manure and derived biochars at 200, 300 and 400°C). organic substances were incorporated with 400 g of soil at 2% level (w/w). All soil treated samples plus control were incubated for 150 days. Soil P availbility determined at 8 different stage of incubation time period. Phosphorous availability was less in untreated soil samples with organic substances and also decreased with time. Although P recovery from inorganic P fertilizer was high in the early stages of incubation time compared to treated soil samples but decreased with time, if not treated with organic substances. Phosphorus availability and recovery increased with time in PM and biochares treated soil samples. Simultanous application of inorganic P and organic substances decreased apparent P recovery. Negative interaction obsorved between organic substances and high rates of inorganic P fertilizer on P availability. It was concluded that PM biochar prepared at 300°C had the highest effect on adjusting P availability in calcareous soil.

Abstract

The use of organic matter such as urban sewage sludge may help sustainable soil fertility via improving the physical, chemical and biological soil characteristics. The main purpose of this study was to determine the effect of urban sewage sludge on chemical properties, soil basal respiration and microbial biomass carbon in a calcareous soil with silty clay loam texture. Therefore, three levels of water repellency (zero, weak and strong) were artificially created in a silty clay loam soil by adding urban sewage sludge (S0=0:100; S50=50:50 and S80=80:20 sludge weight: soil ratio). Water repellency was determined by water drop penetration time (WDPT) method. Also some chemical properties such as soil acidity (pH) and Electrical Conductivity (EC), Soil Organic Carbon (OC), soluble sodium (Na+) and soluble potassium (K+) were measured. The samples were incubated at 23-25 ºC for 30 days and their moisture was maintained at 70-80 % under field capacity and soil basal respiration and microbial biomass carbon of incubation period were evaluated. The results showed that the effect of urban sewage sludge on chemical properties was significant (P ≤0.0001). The application of urban sewage sludge led to significant increase in basal respiration (16 and 27 times) and microbial biomass carbon (15.2 and 26.5 times) in the water repellency soils (S50 and S80) compared to control soil. The observed positive effect of sewage sludge might be due to a high content of organic carbon and nutrients in urban sewage sludge and decrease in the labile organic matter and nutrients during incubation period.

Abstract

Considering water scarcity in Iran, application of deficit irrigation or water stress on some crops is inevitable. We need to provide appropriate design for deficit irrigation. Furrow irrigation management to obtain high efficiency and uniformity is difficult. Therefore, to investigate the variation of the input discharge, the cut-off time and furrow length that are effective on the efficiency and uniformity are very important. The purpose of this research is to provide a method for determining the optimum water use depth and optimizing furrow irrigation design in deficit irrigation conditions and finally comparing design characteristics under full irrigation conditions and deficit irrigation and comparison in different soil tissues. In order to achieve the objectives of this research, an experiment was conducted on forage corn in Shahrekord in a completely randomized block design with 7 treatments of different levels of irrigation in 3 replications. The costs and benefits functions were determined based on design variable and depth of applied water. The software Lingo was used to optimize the design variables (length of the furrow, the input discharge and cut-off time) and depth of applied water in deficit irrigation condition. The results showed that the highest net profit was obtained using 535 mm (equivalent to 79% of full irrigation) and 85 meters, 0.39 liter per second and 188 minutes, respectively, for the length of furrow, input discharge and cut-off time. The results of this design were compared to full irrigation of deferent soil textures. The results showed that an increase in the permeability of the soil caused length of furrow and the cut-off time to decrease, while the flow rate increases and depth of applied water or percent of deficit irrigation were constant.

Abstract

Groundwater is a major source of drought. Karstic aquifers are important sources of groundwater in the West and Kermanshah province. This study was performed to investigate the effects of the meteorological drought on the karstic aquifer with different conditions of development. The studied areas in this research included two karstic aquifers, Bistoon-Parau and Patagh mountain in Kermanshah province. In this study, we used monthly precipitation and springs discharge during a period of 20 years.  Accordingly, the SPI and SDI indices were used to investigate the different states of meteorological and hydrological droughts, respectively. To determine the relationship between meteorological droughts and groundwater, Pearson correlation was used; aalso, to determine the time delay, the correlation between the different time conditions (no delay and delay 1 to 6 months) of the SDI index and the SPI index was investigated. The results of the relationship between the meteorological drought and groundwater showed that both had a significant correlation (p-value: 0.01). Also,  based on the results of the correlation between different time conditions (no delay and delay 1 to 6 months) ,the SDI index was compared to the SPI index, showing that the time delay between the occurrence of meteorological drought and groundwater in the studied areas without time delay or a maximum one-month delay had happened. Based on the results, Pearson correlation coefficients between the SPI and SDI indices in the Bistoon-Parav region were more than those of the Patagh mountain region indicating the development of the Bistoon-Parav karst region, as compared with the Patagh Mountain.

Abstract

The growth of world population and the demand for agricultural products can be regarded as one of the important issues that humanity has ever faced. There are serious concerns regarding surface and ground water pollution by nitrates because of using nitrogen fertilizers in the agriculture. Improving agricultural water management systems can reduce nitrate in drainage outflow and therefore, reduce the environmental pollution. This research was conducted to evaluate the effect of the controlled drainage and nitrogen fertilizer on nitrate leaching and environment pollution as a factorial randomized complete block design in Shiraz College of Agriculture. The treatments consisted of three fertilizer levels; 0, 200 and 300 kgN/ha, and three water table depths: free drainage, control water table at 60cm (CD60) and 90 cm (CD90) depths, respectively. According to the results, the value of drainage water and nitrate losses in the controlled drainage toward free drainage were significantly increased. The mean reduction of drainage water in CD60 and CD90, as compared to free drainage, was 59.3 and 35.7%, respectively. The decrease nitrate losses, as compared to free drainage, was 72 and 44%, respectively. The total value of nitrate leaching in 200 and 300 kgN/ha fertilizer treatments was 1.86 and 2.48 times of 0 kgN/ ha.

Abstract

Because of the undesirable effects of lead on soil properties and human health, evaluation of its remediation methods seems to be essential. In order to evaluate the effect of humic acid (HA) on the  decontamination of lead (Pb) spiked-soils in the presence of wormwood plant (Artemicia absantium), an experiment was carried out in a completely randomized  block design with three replications. Experiment factors including different concentrations of Pb (Pb(NO3)2 in the  solid form) (0, 250, 500 and 1000 mg kg-1) and levels of HA (0, 100 and 200 mg kg-1) were considered. At the end of the growing period of plants, some soil and plant properties were measured. According to the results, BR, MBC, root and shoot dry weights, RWC and Fe and Zn concentrations in the shoot were decreased by increasing the soil Pb concentration. So, the mean values of BR and MBC in Pb1000 treatment was 60 and 51.1 percent lower than those of Pb0, respectively. Pb accumulation in the root and shoot was enhanced as a result of the increase in the soil Pb concentration. The maximum Pb concentration of shoot (37.10 mg kg-1) and root (38.1 mg kg-1) was seen in the Pb1000 treatment. Also, the results suggested that humic acid had a positive effect on the shoot of Fe, Zn and Pb concentrations. So, the concentration of these elements in HA200 treatment showed an increase 1.25, 1.64 and 1.66 times more than that of HA0, respectively. Leaf proline amount was increased significantly by elevating the soil Pb concentration; however, application of 200 mg kg-1 humic acid decreased leaf proline by 54.5 percent, as compared to the control (HA0). Therefore, humic acid effect on increasing the plant Pb uptake, improving soil biological properties, and increasing availability and dissolution of Pb showed its ability in promoting the phytoremediation efficiency. According to the obtained results of this study, woodwarm plant (Artemicia absantium) is a non-accumulator that could not be used for phytoremediation purposes.

Abstract

Assessment of soil quality helps to make a balance between soil function and soil resources, improving soil quality and achieving the sustainable agriculture. For the quantitative evaluation of soil quality in the Shahrekord plain, Chaharmahal va Bakhtiari province, 106 compound surficial soil samples (0-25 cm) were collected. After the pre-treatments of soil samples, 11 physico-chemical soil characteristics/indicators as the total data set (TDS) were measured using the standard methods. Statistical analysis showed the usefulness of Principle Component Analysis (PCA) transformation. The minimum data set (MDS) was selected using PCA. Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) was carried out for the quantitative determination of indicator priorities and weights. Soil quality of the samples was calculated by introducing TDS and MDS into Integrate Quality Index (IQI) and Nemero Quality Index (NQI). The results showed the soil quality of the land uses was as Rangelands> Drylands<Irrigated croplands. The correlation coefficient between IQI-TDS and IQI-MDS was 0.97, while this value for NQI-TDS and NQI-MDS was 0.98. The correlation coefficient between IQI-TDS and NQI-TDS was 0.87 and that between IQI-MDS and NQI-MDS was 0.91. Classification of the resulted soil quality map IQI-TDS revealed that 12.5 % and 15.5 % of the plain were in very high and low quality conditions, respectively.

Abstract

In recent years, a lot of research has been done on the Aquacrop model, the results show that this model simulates the product performance for deficit irrigation conditions. But this model, like other models, is sensitive to values of independent variables (model inputs). In this research, the sensitivity of the Aquacrop model was analyzed for 4 input parameters of reference evapotranspiration, normalized water productivity, initial canopy cover percentage and maximum canopy cover for barley. Irrigation treatments included full irrigation and two deficit irrigation treatments of 80% and 60%, the experiment was done in 2014-15 growing season in the field of Abourihan College. The values of measured biomass were used as the base values for treatments. The Beven’s method (Beven et al., 1979) was used for sensitivity analysis of Aquacrop model. The results showed that the model is most sensitive to the reference crop evapotranspiration, So the sensitivity coefficient for this parameter for full irrigation treatments, 80% full irrigation and 60% full irrigation were -1.1, -1.2 and -2.3 respectively. The negative sign indicates that if the value of reference evapotranspiration input is exceeded the actual value into the model, Yield performance is simulated less than actual value. In the meantime, the higher the degree of deficit irrigation, the greater the sensitivity of the model.

Abstract

The using of soil conditioners to water and soil conservation is essential and also, the effect study of soil moisture on the soil conservation process and its role on changing runoff, soil erosion and sediment yield is necessary for understanding and simulating the hydrologic response of soil. Therefore, the present study was carried with the aim of investigating the effect of biochar with amount of 1.6 t ha-1 on the components of  time to runoff, runoff volume, runoff coefficient, soil loss and sediment concentration in different soil moisture including air-dried, 15, 20 and 30 percent with three replications in plot scale. The results showed that after application of biochar conditioner, time to runoff compared with control treatment at soil moistures of air-dried of 15, 20 and 30 percent happened later 66.66, 186.6, 150.5, and 475.47 respectively. The results also showed that the runoff volume at soil moistures of air-dried of 15, 20 and 30 percent decreased 44.49, 55.65, 36.47 and 41.08 percent, respectively, and the runoff coefficient reduced 55.71, 66.39, 48.44 and 37.82 percent, respectively. The adding biochar caused the decreasing soil loss with rates of 91.19, 85.055, 85.63 and 88.066 percent, respectively, and the sediment concentration with amounts of 84.19, 66.53, 76.57 and 79.59 percent, respectively. Also the results showed that the changes of soil moisture had the significant effect on changing the time to runoff, runoff volume, and soil loss and sediment concentration in level of 99 percent.

Abstract

Nowadays, water supply for the sectors of household consumption, agriculture, green spaces and industry is currently one of the most important challenges for governments in many parts of the world, especially in arid and semi-arid climate regions such as Iran. The aim of this study was to simulate the amount of run-off from the daily precipitation for Sarpol-e Zahab city, for the purpose of estimating the required amount of water for the irrigation of the green spaces of the city. In this study. After providing information and using the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) map of city, all individual sub-basins of the basin were produced. All data related to creating and overlaying hydrologic, climatologic and physiographic layers were used according to the HEC-HMS hydrologic model. The run-off depth and flood volume of each sub-basin were obtained through the SCS method. Then the required amount of water for the green areas of Sarpol-e Zahab city was calculated. The efficient rainfall was estimated using four methods including SCS, 80 percentage, reliability, and USDA for each month, separately. Finally, the amount of needed water for the green area was obtained using these four mentioned methods. The results indicated that the role of curve number in the infiltration rate was more than other variants. Impermeability of urban basins and changes was created due to the growth and development of the city such as removal of vegetation, soil compaction, creation of the water collection and leading surface waters, decreasing the amount of water penetrating to soil significantly. The amount of surface water for sub-basins was estimated to be 266000 cubic meters. Besides, the results showed the amount of required water for 5 months of the year (from early May to September late) using four methods of SCS, 80percentage, reliability  and USDA was  equal to 243525, 238062, 267865 and 236458 cubic meters, respectively. The amount of the estimated runoff volume was 266,000 cubic meters. Regarding the area of green spaces in Sarpol-e Zahab city and its daily need of water, this volume of water could  supply the required amount of water to irrigate the green area of the city for five months (From May to September).

Abstract

Rainfall erosion is the first type of water erosion on the land which is affected by various factors such as land use change and previous rainfall. This study was carried out to investigate the influence of previous rainfalls on the process of rainfall erosion in two marl soils (pasture and that changed to agriculture) under the simulated rainfall. Toward this goal, aggregate samples with the diameters of 6 to 8 mm were randomly collected from the marl areas in the west of Zanjan. Soil aggregates were packed into 48 boxes with the dimension of 30×40 cm to examine the effects of eight rainfall durations with three replications. Eight simulated rainfalls with the duration of 0, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42 and 49 min and a constant intensity of 40 mm h-1 were used in the experiment. The soils were exposed to another simulated rainfall with 40 mm h-1 in terms of intensity for 15 min to study the rainfall erosion processes. The results showed that the aggregate breakdown was significantly affected by the previous rainfalls in the pasture soil (P<0.01), while there was no significant difference among the previous rainfalls in the case of agriculture soil.  Soil compaction and particles splash were significantly affected by previous rainfalls (P<0.05). Aggregate breakdown and particles splash were 1.41 and 1.31 times bigger than their values in the pasture soil. This study, therefore, revealed that the land use change in the mal areas increases the soil vulnerability to rainfall erosion processes. The rate of rainfall erosion processes in each rainfall event depends on the amount of previous rainfall. Increasing aggregate break down and soil water content by the previous rainfall could significantly influence the splash erosion rate in a marl soil.

Abstract

Soil loss can cause many intra-regional and extra-regional problems, on the other hand, the effect of soil moisture on processes of soil loss and sediment yield for the identification and simulation of soil hydrological response is necessary. Therefore, the application of soil conditioners is essential for soil and water conservation. The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of soil conditioners of vermicompost and nano-manure on variables of soil loss and sediment concentration at moistures of air-dried, 15 and 30%, and rainfall intensities of 50 and 90 mm h-1. The obtained results in addition to confirmation of the significant effect of each conservation treatment at the level of 99 percent on the intended components showed that the conservation treatment of vermicompost compared to nano-manure treatment had more effect on measured variables. Also, the conservation treatment of vermicompost could decrease the soil loss at soil moisture air-dried, 15, and 30 percent with rates of 72.15, 66.63, and 78.76 percent (50 mm h-1), respectively, and 45.01, 35.57, and 10.45 percent (of 90 mm h-1), respectively. The effect of conservation treatments, soil moistures, and rainfall intensity and the interaction effects of conservation treatments × rainfall intensity and rainfall intensity × soil moisture on changes of soil loss and sediment concentration were significant at the level of 99 percent. The application of vermicompost and nano-manure had acceptable results on studied parameters but the vermicompost effect was more than nano-manure. Therefore, due to the widespread use of different types of conditioners, nowadays, it is needed to move the application feasibility of conditioners such as vermicompost and nano-manure that these have not the adverse effects of environmental.

Abstract

Knowledge of the distribution of heavy metal concentrations in different components of soil particles is significant to assess the risk of heavy metals. The objective of this study was to evaluate some pollution indices and spatial variations in their estimation in different components of soil particle size fractions (<2000 and> 63 μm) in the Baghan watershed in the southeast of Bushehr province with an area of about 929 square kilometers. The location of 120 surficial composite soil samples (0-20 cm) was determined by using the Latin hypercube method. Soil pollution was assessed using geochemical indices of contamination factor (CF) and pollution load index (PLI). The kriging method was used in the Arc GIS software to interpolate the spatial variations of CF and PLI. Based on the results, the CF displayed the particles in the size < 2000 microns compared to all metals in moderate pollution conditions (1≤CF <3) and with the fineness of soil particles (particles with a diameter <63 microns) concerning to Cd metal shows significant contamination status and moderate pollution with other metals, respectively. CFZn, CFCu, and CFFe in particle size <2000 microns and CFPb in finer class were fitted with a spherical model and other metal contamination coefficients with an exponential model. CFCd and CFFe have the highest impact ranges at <2000 and < 63 microns, respectively. The results of this research confirm that corrective operation is needed to monitor cadmium status in the studied area.
