Abstract

This experiment was carried out to study the effects of different levels of vitamin C (0, 150, 300 and 450 ppm) and cage density (3, 4 and 5 birds) on performance and egg shell quality of laying hens under high environmental temperature. In a completely randomized design with 3 × 4 factorial arrangement, one hundred and ninety two (192) 25 week white leghorn hens were divided into 48 replicates four hens per replicate. The experimental period lasted 90 days. The criteria measured were: percentage production, egg weight, egg output, feed conversion ratio, shell thickness, shell weight, shell calcium and albumin height. Daily egg production and biweekly egg weight, shell thickness, shell weight and albumin height were recorded. Shell c1acium was measured at the end of the experiment's period. The results indicate that, 150 ppm vitamin C significantly (P < 0.05) increased egg weight and shell calcium. Albumin height was significantly (P < 0.05) increased at 300 ppm vitamin C supplementation. Cage density had no effects on shell weight, thickness and calcium, and albumin height. Egg weight, egg production and egg output were reduced significantly (P < 0.05) due to increased cage density. Feed conversion ratio was also increased significantly (P < 0.05) as cage density was increased. Interactions between vitamin C and cage density on shell and egg weight were significant (P < 0.05).

Abstract

In order to determine the most suitable cultivar and N level based on yield and silage value of forage sorghum, an experiment was conducted in summer 1995. The experiment was arranged in a split-plot design with four replications. Two levels of N (300, 500 Kg/ha urea) were the main plots and the subplots were three sorghum hybrids (Sugar graze, Super dan and Speed feed). Seeds were hand sown on June 29 with an inter row space of 50 cm and a final density of 20 plant/m2.

The results showed that when the N rate increased, forage yields and percent of protein in forage and silage increased. Also panicle dry weight increased at anthesis. The N rate had no significant effect on other traits. A significant difference was observed among hybrids for all characteristics measured. Sugar graze with a bigger stem diameter was taller and produced higher number of leaves. At anthesis, plant leaf and stem dry weight was also highest for Sugar graze however, the highest panicle dry weight belonged to Speed feed. There was a significant interaction between hybrids and N levels for dry matter production. The percent of leaf, stem and panicle dry matter was highest in sugar graze, Super dan and Speed feed, respectively. The Sugar graze produced the highest forage and dry matter yield. This hybrid produced 30 ton/ha of dry matter and 97 ton/ha of forage, respectively.

 Furthermore, this cultivar had the highest percent of forage crude protein (7.45%) and the least percent of forage crude fiber (25.12%). Ensiling caused a decrease in percentage of crude protein and an increase in crude fiber. The Sugar graze and Speed feed had the highest and lowest dry matter digestibility, respectively. Based on the results obtained from this study, Sugar graze was found to be the most suitable hybrid due to its highest forage and dry matter yield and better silage quality. Higher N rate (500 kg/ha) is also recommended for higher forage yield and higher percentage of protein.

Abstract

The antifungal effect of sodium diacetate on inhibiting the growth of some bread spoiling molds was examined both in culture media and in flat bread “In situ”. In the first step, the antifungal effect of different concentrations of sodium diacetate: 0, 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, and 5000 ppm were examined against Aspergillus sp., Aspergillus niger, Rhizopus sp., and Penicillium sp.

The results indicated that as the concentration of sodium diacetate increased, the mold growth decreased. At 5000 ppm the mold growth was inhibited up to fifth day (the last day of experiment). Based on these results, the antifungal effect of different concentrations of sodium diacetate was evaluated in bread “In situ”. In this stage Aspergillus sp. was selected as the indicator mold. The results indicated that if 3000 ppm of sodium diacetate is used, not only mold growth is inhibited but bread staling can also be prevented. This concentration of sodium diacetate does not have any harmful effect on texture and flavour, and can increase bread shelf life up to four days. Higher concentrations of sodium diacetate can inhibit mold growth completely, but have negative effects on texture and flavour. Therefore, 3000 ppm of sodium diacetate is recommended for increasing bread shelf life.

Abstract

This experiment was carried out to study the effect of different levels (3.06, 3.23, 3.4, 3.57 and 3.74%) of calcium and vitamin D3 (2000, 2200 and 2400 IU/kg diet) on eggshell quality of laying hens. In a completely randomized design and in a 5×3 (15 treatments) factorial arrangement, two hundred and forty (240) white leghorn laying hens, strain Hy-Line W36 and 26 weeks old, were divided into 60 replicates, four hens per replicate. The experimental period lasted 90 days until the hens were 38 weeks of age.

The results indicated that shell strength, shell thickness and shell percentage increased significantly (P<0.05) at 3.06% Ca level. Calcium levels had no effect on ash shell percentage. Vitamin D3 did not have a significant (P<0.05) effect on ash shell percentage and calcium shell, but shell strength, shell thickness and shell percentage significantly (P<0.05) increased at 2400 IU/kg diet vitamin D3. Only plasma calcium raised significantly (P<0.05) due to the added vitamin D3. Interaction between vitamin D3 and calcium on shell strength, shell thickness, shell percentage and plasma calcium were significant (P<0.05). Correlation between egg shell quality parameters and blood parameters with calcium and vitamin D3 was significant (P<0.05).

Abstract

Rice bran is the most important by-product of rice milling. It is a valuable source of edible oil in most rice producing countries. Rice bran oil is used in babyfood, biscuit, poultry, fish and farm animal feeds. The storage of rice bran without 'heat processing will result in hydrolysis and auto-oxidation of lipids, and to its decreased physicochemical, organoleptic and nutritional quality. Rice bran is rich in carbohydrates, free amino acids, lipids and different enzymes. The enzymes have destructive effects on the quality of rice bran components. Heat processing is an effective method to reduce the microbial and enzymatic activity of bran.

This study was carried out using a factorial experiment by completely randomized design with three replications to investigate the effect of heat treatment and storage time on rice bran crude oil properties. The parboiling treatment was effective on the rice kernel strength. The bran produced from parboiled rice milling had lower endosperm components. This type of bran had a lower starch but a higher oil percentage. The results of color of rice bran oil samples determined by Lovibond showed that the oil from parboiled rice bran before and during storage had better color than the other samples. Iodine value of bran oil from parboiled paddy decreased during the storage period. The results from studies on fatty acid composition of oil samples determined by gas chromatography (G.C.) showed that the quantitative trend of fatty acids of the control sample remained the same as that in the rice bran samples with the treatment process.

Abstract

A Complete Randomized Block design was used to study the total protein efficiency (TPE) in Iranian Kilka and Peruvian Anchovy fish meals. Six isoenergetic (3200 kcal ME/kg) and isonitrogenous (18.5% CP) diets based on corn with six samples of fish meal (No. 1, 5, 6 steam processed, 2, 4 flame processed Kilka fish meal and No. 3 Peruvian Anchovy fish meal) were formulated and fed to Lohman male chicks from 7 to 42 days of age. Feed consumption and weight gain were measured weekly. Total protein efficiency and feed conversion (FC) were calculated and statistically analyzed.

The highest TPE values in fish meals obtained over the period of 7-28 days and significantly differed (P< 5%) among Kilka and Peruvian fish meals. With the exception of sample No. 5, the highest values of TPE obtained in the case of steam processed and the lowest obtained the case of flame processed Kilka fish meals. The TPE value of Peruvian fish meal was approximately equal to the average of the two types of processed Kilka fish meals. The orthogonal and nonorthogonal comparison of TPE and feed conversion (FC) in Kilka fish meals, regardless of the type of processing, with the same values in Peruvian Anchovy fish meal did not show any significant differences (P> 5%). With the exception of sample No. 5, the highest final weight of chicks obtained with steam processed Kilka fish meal. In general, TPE values in Kilka fish meals were variable when compared to Peruvian fish meal and TPE of steam processed Kilka fish meal was better.

Abstract

The variation and path coefficient analysis of bread-making quality traits have been studied for 145 genotypes of breeding lines, cultivars and landrace varieties of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Bread-making quality traits of genotypes was evaluated indirectly by protein percentage, SDS and Zeleny sedimentation tests, hardness index, test weight, bread volume, grain moisture, and water absorption percentage. Hardness index, Zeleny and SDS sedimentation tests had the highest coefficient of variability (13.51%, 11.83% and 11.03%, respectively). Factor analysis for the genotypes, based on qualitative traits revealed two factors, which explain 98.23% of total variation and were named grain protein index and bread volume factors. The result of correlation analysis indicated positive and significant relationship between protein percentage, SDS sedimentation test and other bread-making quality traits. On the first and second steps of stepwise regression analysis, protein percentage was the most effective trait in explaining different qualitative trait variations. Path analysis also showed the direct and significant effects of protein percentage, Zeleny sedimentation volume, grain moisture and water absorption percentage, and bread volume on SDS sedimentation test. According to cluster analysis based on qualitative traits, the cultivars and landrace varieties, from the view poit of protein quality and quantity, had the highest potential among other groups (generally breading lines).

Abstract

To study grain quality traits and their relationships with high molecular weight (HMW) and low moleculor weight (LMW) glutenin subunits, 104 durum wheat genotypes were used. Six grain quality characteristics comprising wet and dry gluten content, test weight, grain hardiness, protein content and SDS sedimentation volume were studied. HMW and LMW glutenin subunits were evaluated using SDS-polyacrylamid gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) in 33 genotypes. Statistical analysis including correlation coefficients, factor analysis, cluster analysis of genotypes based on qualitative traits, analysis of variance in qualitative traits based on HMW, LMW, and combination of subunits as well as all of subunits, and canonical correlation analysis between glutenin subunits and qualitative traits were used. Factor analysis of the genotypes detected 2 factors, which explained 65 percent of the total variation among the data. These were named quantitative protein and qualitative protein. Based on cluster analysis, the genotypes were classified into four clusters. The genotypes in groups 2 and 4 were beneficial in terms of protein quantity and quality. In evaluating glutenin subunits, 7 HMW subunits and 2 LMW subunits were detected. Subunit null of Glu-Al was observed. Subunits 7+8, 6+8, 13+16 and 20 at Glu-Bl were observed however, neither of them had significant differences in qualitative traits, but 6+8 and 7+8 had a higher SDS sedimentation rate than 20. LMW-1 and LMW-2 had significant differences in protein content and SDS sedimentation LMW-1 had higher protein content whereas LMW-2 had higher SDS sedimentation. Combibation of subunit LMW-1 / HMW 7+8 had the highest protein content and LMW-2/HMW 7+8 had the highest SDS sedimentation. Results of canonical correlation showed that presence of LMW-2 and HMW 7+8, and absence of LMW-1 and HMW 20 in durum wheats caused an increase in SDS sedimentation and a reduction in protein and gluten content.

Abstract

Cultivating rangeland to be shifted to crop land farms commonly causes soil degradation and runoff generation. This study was conducted to evaluate the cultivation effects on runoff generation and soil quality. The experiment was performed in a rangeland and a 40-year cultivated land located at two slope positions (back slope and shoulder) of a hillside in Dorahan, Chaharmahal & Bakhtiari Province. A 60±5 mm.hr-1 rainfall intensity was simulated by a rainulator. Organic matter, mean weighted diameter, saturated hydraulic conductivity, collected runoff and sediments were measured. The differences between the means were tested using T-test. Results showed 35, 53 and 8% increases in the organic matter, mean weighted diameter, and saturated hydraulic conductivity in back slope, respectively. The increases in these parameters in shoulder position were 39, 60 and 33%. The values for runoff and sediments in back slope were 3 and 8 times greater than in other similar positions while the values in the shoulder position were 11 and 55 times greater than the same values in other positions.

Abstract

Cation exchange capacity (CEC) is one of the most important chemical characteristics which influences soil quality from different aspects. At the same time, CEC is an input parameter of many computer models being applied in soil science and agriculture. Methods of CEC determination are always time-consuming and laborious. Therefore, developing a model for CEC estimation from other soil properties is essential. The objective of this study was to understand the associations between CEC (as a dependent variable) and sand, silt, clay, organic matter and pH (as independent variables). In this study 464 soil samples from A, B, and C horizons of different soils were used. Results revealed that CEC is negatively correlated with sand (r=-0.389***) and is positively correlated with organic matter (r=0.772***), clay (r= 0.391***) and silt (r= 0.233***). No significant correlation was observed between CEC and pH. Stepwise regression analysis showed that both organic matter and clay enter the model and that coefficients of determination (r2) for the multiple models are higher than those of simple linear correlations. Other parameters could not increase the r2 considerably. Correlation analysis on data from A, B, and C horizons revealed that the CEC of organic matter in different horizons are not the same. Separation of Aridisols could not increase the r2 of the model and the accuracy of the estimations. Correlation studies in acid soils showed that the contribution of organic matter in CEC is much higher than that of clays.

Abstract

An approach for regional low flow frequency analysis is to use multiple regression techniques for obtaining relationships between low flows with specific return periods and catchments characteristics. In this paper, this method has been used. After single-site frequency analysis for 20 stream gauging stations, homogeneity test was performed. Regional relationships between low flows with return periods 2 , 5 , 10, and 20 years and catchments characteristics were derived. For this purpose, catchment area, mean elevation, minimum elevation, shape factor, main channel length, length of main chanel from catchment centroid to outlet, forest area, mean annual rainfall, and mean catchment slope as model inputs were examined and cachment area, mean elevation, and mean catchment slope entered to the models. Finally, the mean relative error of models for different return period, 2, 5, 10, and 20 years, was computed 41.1, 41.3, 45.0, 47.2 percent, respectively that in comparison with other studies, it displays smaller errors.

Abstract

Understanding the variability of pedological properties as well as the soil quality attributes on different landscape positions in hummocky terrains would result in a better land management in such areas. Despite the importance of such studies, no research has been couducted on the landscape-scale variability of soil quality indices in Iran and most researchers have so far focussed on pedological aspects of soil variability. The objective of this study was to understand the variability of selected soil quality indices at different landscape positions. A systematic grid including 120 points (12x10) with a distance of 30m was laid out in a hummocky rangeland around the city of Semirom. Surface soil samples were taken from 120 points on grid nodes and their organic carbon, microbial respiration rate, phosphatase activity, pH and EC were measured. Also, the thickness of A horizon and the soil moisture content were measured on grid nodes in the field. The results indicated that the lower slope positions including footslope and toeslope had the highest amount of phosphatase activity, microbial respiration, A horizon thickness, organic carbon, and EC. In contrast, soils occuring on shoulder had the least amount of the above-mentioned properties. Soils on summit and backslope seem to have been moderately degraded. Soil pH showed the opposite trend, as compared to other properties studied. The presence of a great variability in soil quality attributes at the landscape scale can be attributed to differenes in effective moisture that various landscape positions receive, as well as the differenes in soil erosion and deposition rates. This can also be an indication of a severe land degradion due to poor management practices. Since applying different management practices on different landscape positions are practically impossible, to be on the safe side, it is highly recommended to plan conservation practices based on soil quality of the most degraded landscape positions.

Abstract

Over-grazing may induce changes in the dynamics of plant residue carbon and soil organic carbon (SOC). The objective of this study was to evaluate the litter quality of three dominant pasture species, and the relationship between litter quality and C dynamics under different range managements in native rangelands of SabzKou. Aboveground litters from three dominant species including, Agropyron intermedium (AP), Hordeum bulbosum (HB) and Juncus stenophylla (JU) were collected in an area protected from grazing for 15 years. Concentrations of N, P and K in litter samples were determined. Litter decomposition was also studied by using a litter bag experiment. Bagged litters were incubated under field conditions at grazed and ungrazed sites for one year. Concentrations of N in litters were 1.37, 1.36 and 0.98, respectively, for AP, JU and HB. Assuming 50 % C in the litter, C/N ratios of litters were 37.2, 37.3 and 51.1, respectively, for AP, JU and HB. The litters of AP, JU and HB contained, respectively, 0.13,0.12 and 0.21 % of P, and 1.04, 1.01 and 1.72 % of K. Results indicate no significant (p>0.05) and consistent difference in litter decomposition rates between grazed and ungrazed areas. The three pasture species, however, showed significant (p<0.01) differences in litter decomposition rate. It is appearing that the trend in litter decomposition of these plant species correlates initially with litter C/N ratio, but other quality parameters of litter as well as soil environmental conditions would likely affect the litter decomposability in advanced stages of decomposition process.

Abstract

To evaluate heritability, phenotypic and genotypic correlation coefficients, phenotypic and genotypic variances as well as relationships between some of the grain quality traits, an investigation was conducted in a randomized complete block design replicated three times in 2001, using four durum wheat genotypes PI40100, Dipper-6, Oste/Gata, Shova and their F2 and F3 progenies derived from their crosses. Grain quality characteristics including seed hardiness, protein content, SDS sedimentation volume and gluten content were evaluated. The results indicated that wet gluten content and dry gluten content had the highest coefficient of variation. Statistical analysis showed a significant difference between genotypes for all traits with the exception of SDS sedimentation volume. Dry gluten content had the highest heritability (90.4%) while SDS sedimentation volume had the lowest heritability (48.6%). Results of correlation analysis indicated that seed hardiness correlated significantly with protein content, SDS sedimentation and dry gluten content. Protein content had a positive correlation with wet and dry gluten content. Since dry gluten content showed a high correlation with protein content (quantity) and seed hardiness had a high correlation with SDS sedimentation volume, hence these two traits can be used as the selection criteria for improving quality of protein in durum wheat.

Abstract

Fecundity and sex ratio are the important factors in the quality control of parasitoid, Trichogramma. In this research, the effect of the host egg deprivation on these factors in Trichogramma brassicae Bezdenko was evaluated. The experiment was conducted with four treatments, each in five replications in a completely randomized design. Twenty mated females (24 h old) were transferred into the glass tubes (1.5×10 cm) separately and were fed by honey 20% daily. In one treatment, parasitoids were provided with the 150 host eggs (Sitotroga cerealella) in first day, but in other treatments the 150 host eggs were offered after 2, 4 and 6 days. In order to obtain fecundity, black eggs were counted after 3 or 4 days. After emergence, adult parasitoids were recognized as male and female by their antennae and sex ratio was obtained. Results indicated that as parasitoids, Trichogramma sp., were deprived from the host eggs longer, more decrease was observed in fecundity and female ratio. Therefore, parasitoid quality was decreased by the host egg deprivation.

Abstract

The Drying process is one of the most important factors which are effective on the milling quality of rice and its economic value. In order to investigate the effect of dryer parameters on milling quality of rice and their relationships, one of the usual rice varieties (Binam) of Gilan province with an average milling quality and the initial moisture content of 20.5% was selected. Drying process was performed on the basis of a complete randomized design with 20 treatments and 3 factors including temprature (at five levels of 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70 °C) , air velocity (at two levels of 0.5 and 2 m/s) and final moisture content of paddy (at two levels of 10.5% and 14% on wet basis equal to 11.7% and 16.3% on dry basis respectively). Results of the experiments indicated that increase of temprature or air velocity reduces drying time but increases drying rate constant (K). It also revealed that decrease of final moisture content of paddy increases drying time significantly, but doesn’t have any significant effect on drying rate constant (K). Correlation test indicated that milling loss (breakage) has a negative relation to drying time and a positive relation to drying rate constant(K), however, bending strength has a positive relation to drying time and a negative relation to constant of K. Regression of qualitative properties of paddy including: milling loss (breakage) and the bending strength over drying time and constant of K revealed that drying time is a better criterion for predicting the mentioned qualitative properties.

Abstract

Consumption of foods with low glycemic index (G.I.) by diabetic patients helps maintain their blood sugar at acceptable levels. Ordinary jam has a high G.I. The purpose of the present investigation was to prepare a dietetic jam using nutritive and non-nutritive sweeteners. The investigation was carried out in four steps. First, glycyrrhizin was extracted from licorice extract powder, its ammonium form was prepared, and its purity was assay by HPLC. Secondly, based on a completely randomized design various types of jam were prepared using different combinations of sorbitol, fructose and ammonium glycyrrhizin. Thirdly, the prepared jams and their reference controls were evaluated for color, flavor, texture and overall acceptability by a selected taste-panel and were also subjected to physical analysis using Hunter Lab colorimeter and Bostwick consistometer. Two jam preparations were finally selected on the basis of their overall acceptability. Finally, glycemic indices of the selected jams were determined using NIDDM volunteers. The results showed that ammonium-glycyrrhizin enhances the overall acceptability of the selected product (P<0.05). As G.I. values for the selected jams were low (23.5 and 23.9), their consumption by diabetic patients and their production on a commercial scale are recommended.

Abstract

Rape seed (Brassica napus L.) containing more than 40 per cent oil is one of the best oilseeds for cultivation in Iran. Sclerotinia stem rot is one of the important diseases of the rape seed, the causal agent being Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. The aim of our study was to assess the effect of the disease on the quantity and quality of the extracted oil and remaining foodstuff in a field experiment. In this research three cultivars including Okapi, SLM046 and Talayeh were examined under field conditions using a factorial design (cultivars and inoculations were two factors under study). The cultivars were inoculated with SK4 isolate of S. sclerotiorum. The inoculation was done on the plant stems at 30 cm height above the soil using Lewartosca method during mid flowering stage. One thousand- seed weight and glucosinolate, erucic and oleic fatty acids contents of the seeds were determind after the harvest. The results indicated that the infected plants in comparision with the controls had a lower 1000- seed weight and oleic acid content and a higher glucosinolates and erucic acid contents. There were significant differences among the genotypes in respect to all the studied traits except 1000- seed weight. Inverse correlation was observed between 1000- seed weight and erucic acid content or oil glucosinolates contents. It was concluded that the disease can reduce quantity and quality of seed oil and other nutrient contents.

Abstract

A field study was conducted at the Zabol Agricultural Research Center during the years (2003-2004) to investigate the effect of irrigation with treated municipal wastewater on the yield and quality of wheat and some soil properties. Irrigation treatments were: T1: Irrigation of wheat with well water during entire period of growing season T2: Irrigation of wheat with well water until the begging of flowering stage, and irrigation with wastewater in every other turns of irrigation T3: Irrigation of wheat with well water until the beginning of booting stage, and irrigation with wastewater in every other turns of irrigation T4: Irrigation of wheat with well water until the begging of tilling stage, and irrigation with wastewater in every other turns of irrigation and T5: Irrigation of wheat with wastewater during entire period of growing season. A complete randomized block design with four replications was adopted for this experiment. The soil was sandy loam with no limitation for internal drainage. Chemical and physical aspects of soil were measured during the experiment. Grain yield, yield components and chemical composition of wheat grain were also measured. The results showed that yield of wheat and total biomass production were statistically significant in T3, T4 and T5 compared with the control treatment. Plant height, width and length of flag leaf, numbers of fertile tillers, length of panicle, numbers of grains per panicle and weight of 1000 grains were also statistically significant with the control treatment. Percentages of protein were statistically different among various irrigation treatments. No significant changes in accumulation of heavy metals in soil and plant grains were observed. The increase of SAR, ECe, O.C% and total nitrogen in the T4 and T5 were statistical significant compared with the control treatment. In summary, for sustainable use of Zabol municipal wastewater, the growth stages of wheat should be irrigated with municipal wastewater and other growth stages should be irrigated with nonsalinty water, so that the maximum yield is obtained and soil salinitisation and sodication is prevented.

Abstract

To determine the preheating effect on frozen French - fries quality, four potato cultivars: Agria, Marfona, Auozonia & Auola were selected from Faridan region in Isfahan province & transferred to cold storage at temp.=5+0.5°C and RH=85-90%. At first, some physico – chemical characteristics of potato tubers such as specific gravity and dry matter content were measured by A.O.A.C methods. Also reducing sugar contents were analyzed by “High Performance Liquid Chromatography” (HPLC). The potato strips were blanched in hot water at different condition: 70°C - 4 min, 70 °C 10 min, 95 °C - 2min and then deep - fat fried at temperature 175°C for 2 minutes. Product quality properties such as texture, color and oil absorption were determined by standard methods. The data were analyzed using a factorial experiment in a completely randomized design, and average comparisons were made by by Duncan's multiple range test (p < 0.01). The results showed that blanching at 70 °C for 10 minutes markedly improved the quality parameters. Treatment at 95 °C – 2 min did not have any significant effect on Hunter Lab color parameters compared with 70 °C – 10 min. treatment, but the texture was significantly different. The oil absorption increased in strips blanched at 95 °C for 2 minutes. The samples blanched at 70 °C – 4 min had no significant effect on the product quality. In conculsion, Agria &Auola cultivars were more suitable for manufacturing French - fries than the other two varieties.
