Abstract

This study utilized a descriptive-correlational surveying approach to examine some economic factors involved in the adoption of an integrated campaign to control rice stem borer (Chilo suppressalis) in Isfahan Province. The population consisted of farmers living in the vilages where Biological Control Plan was conducted (N=6000). The population frame was obtained from Isfahan Agricultural Organization. The sample was obtained using the cluster random sampling method (n=361). Questionnaire and interview were used for data collection in this study. Face and content validity of the instrument was established using a panel of experts consisting of senior faculty members in agricultural extension and education at Tarbiat Modaress University. Further, the agricultural officer of Isfahan Province validated the questionnaire. A reliability analysis was conducted and Cronbach alpha value was reported to be 83 percent. The results showed that the rate of adoption of Integrated Campaign to Control Rice Stem Borer among the farmers was moderate. Among the economic characteristics, there was a significant relationship between adoption of integrated campaign and area of land, amount of area under cultivation, degree of family cooperation in the agricultural activities, access to agricultural inputs, access to financial resources, and yield of rice per hectare.

Abstract

Citrus juice and concentrate are among the major industrial products in Iran. Large quantities of citrus peels with considerable amounts of pectin are also produced. Pectin could be extracted from the peels to be used as a gelling agent in some food products. Unfortunately, all pectin used in the food industry is imported. This study was carried out to find the best conditions of pectin extraction from orange peels. Samples of orange peels were collected from a concentrated orange juice factory. Pectin was extracted by sulfuric, nitric and hydrochloric acids. Certain qualitative and quantitative tests, such as yield of extraction and cost of extraction were determined. Also, food safety aspects as a result of using the above acids were considered. Hydrochloric acid was found to be the most suitable acid. In the second part of the research, the effects of temperature (85 and 90˚C), time (40, 50 and 60 minutes) and pH (1.6, 1.8 and 2.0) on the yield of extraction, purity, gelling ability, percentage of methoxylation and degree of esterification of the extracted pectins were measured. Statistical analysis of the results showed that the best conditions for the extraction of pectin include a pH level of 1.6, a temperature of 90˚C and a period of 50 minutes.

Abstract

Fecundity of Shah-Koolee in the Sefidrood river, which is one of the economic and popular fishes in northern part of Iran, was studied. From April to August 2000, 539 Shah-Koolee fishes were caught at the specific station in the Sefidrood river from the sea shore to Kisum. Seventy one samples of unspawned fishes were taken, the primary biometry was performed, specimens of the different parts of the ovary were prepared and absolute fecundity was determined through gravimetry. Maximum and minimum fecundity rates were 18860 and 2929 eggs, respectively, that related to eight- and three- years old fishes. Relative fecundity was 132±37 and 72 eggs per gram of weight. The relationship between absolute fecundity and length and weight was linear, correlation and numerical quantities of a, b and r were calculated and regression graph was drawn. Gonado Somatic Index (G.S.I.) was used to determine the natural spawning region and calssification was done on the basis of two factors, age and station. It was found that three- years old fishes with a regeneration power of 17.05 in comparison with other age groups had higher potential. This index also showed that Astaneh and Kisum stations were favorable places for natural spawning of these fishes.

Abstract

Pistachio oyster shell scale is one of the important pests of pistachio in Iran whose females are reported to exist in two or three forms, each form developing on a specific part of the pistachio tree. In this study, abundance of the pest is investigated on leaves and branches for different ages, two heights and four cardinal directions of tree crown. Paralelly seasonal population fluctuations of three forms were studied on leaves, and one-and two-year-old branches separately. This insect overwintered as female mostly on one and two-year-old branches. It had two separable periods of activity, through the season. In the first period, eggs mostly hatched in April and crawlers mostly settled on leaves, fruits and newly grown twigs but rarely on older branches.These populations are male and female. In the second period, eggs mostly hatched in June, and crawlers settled mostly on leaves and one and two-year-old branches, but all individuals settled on leaves are males and those on branches are females. Population density is significantly higher on upper surface of leaves than on the lower surface. Analysis of variance showed that only significant differences existed in densities observed between trees in both generations, and also between two heights of tree crown for populations settled on wood. Two predatory species from Cybocephalidae and Coccinellidae, one ectoparasitoid from Aphelinidae and two endoparasitoids from Encyrtidae were collected as natural enemies of this pest in Isfahan.

Abstract

Clay minerals have considerable effects on physico-chemical properties of soils. Using different techniques, mineralogy of silicate clays and their formation were investigated in selected soils from Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province. The study area is about 1300 ha and its soil moisture and temperature regimes are xeric and mesic, respectively. Geomorphologically, the area consists of different landforms including pediments, outwash, hills and piedmont plain. After field and laboratory studies, five representative pedons were selected in previously determined mapping units and samples were taken for the analyses required. Clay particles from two surrounding rock formations and selected soil samples were separated and examined by electron microscopy (SEM and TEM), X-ray diffraction and infrared techniques. Illite, smectite, chlorite, palygorskite and kaolinite were present in all the soils. Considering the fact that palygorskite was not observed in nearby rock formations, this mineral is probably formed by pedogenic processes. Smectite, on the other hand, has been inherited from parent materials and also transformed from palygorskite. Other minerals had been probably inherited from parent materials. Infrared spectra confirm the X-ray diffraction and submicroscopic results.

Abstract

Soil tilth is crucial to seedling emergence, plant growth, and crop yield. Soil tilth of unstable soil is very susceptible to change. Internal forces originating from matric suction can change soil physical properties. A laboratory study was conducted on pots of a surface silty clay loam soil of Khomeinishahr series (fine-loamy, mixed, thermic Typic Haplargids, USDA), located in Research Farm of Isfahan University of Technology. Soil surface subsidence, bulk density, cone index, and tensile strength were measured after first flood irrigation. Results showed that the seedbed (0-20 cm) with a bulk density of 1.2 Mg.m-3 will be changed to a massive soil with high values of bulk density, cone index, and tensile strength after soil wetting. Slaking, slumping and coalescence of the soil caused soil surface to subside about 1.5 cm in 20 cm soil layer. After irrigation, cone index and tensile strength increased abruptly with decreasing of moisture content. It is shown that the dominant source of strength (cone index and tensile strength) gain during drying is the effective stress due to matric suction. In the absence of external loads, physical state (tilth) of the soil returned back to the original state. Therefore, soil slaking and slumping and rearrangement of particles along with the internal forces are the factors leading to soil hardness.

Abstract

A ruminal in situ experiment using three fistulated ewes was conducted to determine dry matter (DM) and crude protein (CP) degradation of steam–flaked broomcorn (SFBr), ground broomcorn (GBr) and ground barley (GB). Grain samples were suspended in the rumen of sheep for 0, 2, 4, 8, 16, 24 and 48 h. Nylon bags were washed with tap water after removal. Effective degradability of DM at outflow rates of k = 0.05 and k = 0.08 h-1 was significantly higher for SFBr than for GBr (59 and 53% vs. 43 and 35%). SFBr has considerably higher soluble DM than GBr and GB. Insoluble DM of SFBr was lower than that of GBr and GB. Solubility of CP in broomcorn grain was significantly decreased by steam–flaking, but degradation rate of insoluble CP was not altered. Results from this study showed that SFBr supplies the major source of availabe nutrients for rumen microorganisms compared with GBr. In other words, using the most efficient processing method for ruminants will be necessary.

Abstract

High attraction is reported for yellow sticky traps to capture pistachio psylla. In pest management, it is important to forecast from the adult population density the density of other developmental stages in order to gain an estimate of the density in damaging stages. In 1998 and 1999, yellow sticky boards with 10150.15 cm were installed in two pistachio orchards in Borkhar district of Isfahan and egg and nymphal densities were simultaneously counted on leaves. Collected data were used to determine regression relationships between two weeks’ average egg density, first and second nymphal instar densities and the sum of egg and first and second instar nymphal densities, one week after the average adult capture in two previous weeks. A low correlation was found between egg count and adult capture, but higher coefficients were obtained between other stages. It was possible to estimate first and second instar nymphal populations from the following equations:

 For high adult densities (X):

Y= 58.6+0.4762X-(7*10-5)X2                                    R2=0.82                             commercial orchard

 Y= 27.68+0.5092X-(5*10-5)X2                       R2=0.86                              abandoned orchard

and for low adult densities (X)

Y= 1.7162X-17.454                                     R2=0.97                              commercial orchard

 Y= 1.1117X-4.9841                                    R2=0.90                              abandoned orchard

The application of this method is recommended for the management of pistachio psylla.

Abstract

In this study, the effect of deficit irrigation with every–other furrow irrigation method, which is an innovated method in farm irrigation management, was examined on sorghum (Sorghum durra L.) in Bajgah and Kooshkak areas of Fars Province. The experimental design was split plot with three main plots of irrigation interval (10, 15 and 20 days), three subplots of irrigation methods (ordinary furrow, fixed and variable every–other furrow), and 4 replications. Considering the crop production cost with real and subsidized prices of water in both areas, the net benefit per unit volume of irrigation water and benefit–cost ratio were calculated. The results showed that these economic parameters for the fixed and alternative furrow irrigation methods of 10-day intervals in both areas did not differ much with those of the ordinary furrow irrigation with 10-day intervals and were even higher in Bajgah area. Furthermore, the relationship between the amount of irrigation water, water application efficiency (Ea), water price per unit volume (Cw) and the net benefit per unit volume of irrigation water (B) with different conveyance efficiencies (Ec) were determined by multiple linear regression procedure. The regression coefficients of linear fit equation between the costs and irrigation water were determined. The results indicated that with higher price of water, the farmer should increase the farm irrigation application efficiency to avoid the economic losses.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the income distribution among the farmers of two districts of lowland and upland of Savojbolagh township of Tehran Province, Iran. The data of this study were collected by filling out questionnaires through interviews with 350 farmers who were selected by stratified random sampling. For analysis, such techniques as Gini Ratio, comparing the quintiles, and comparing means of different variables were used. The results showed that the income inequalities in the upland district were larger than in lowland. Income mean in the fifth quintile relative to other quintiles was considerably large and this fact was more serious in upland. As in income distribution, similar inequalities were observed in land distribution. The source of income of the farmers included income from agricultural activities (crops, livestock and fruit production) and from nonagricultural activities (second jobs and other incomes). Inequalities in total income in lowland and upland were mainly generated from agricultural sources of income while non-agricultural sources were less important. Inequalities in income from agricultural sources in lowland were related to livestock, fruits, and crops, and in upland to livestock, crops and fruits, respectively.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate mechanization quality and quantity for improvement purposes. Northern Ahwaz including five districts with a total area of 286,800 hectares was selected for evaluation. The current potentials for scientific mechanization and suitable production methods in the study area were identified within the framework of a field study. In addition to a holistic study of the area and the qualitative and quantitative factors, a plain with an area of 1,100 hectares was selected for a more concentrated and specific analysis of the results. Some of the factors uniquely investigated in the study area were not able to be studied in other parts of the region. The evaluation suggests that the level of mechanization in the region is 1.1 horse power/ha, which, despite its general desirability, is low for many farming technologies in the region such that most farmers use tractors for many farming activities like plowing and furrowing. In other words, the quality of mechanization in the region (worker skills, machinery management, support services, etc.) in terms of the evaluated parameters such as lower rates of tractor efficiency (40%), steep fall in reaping wheat by combine harvesters (9.4%), and a failure in farmers’ machinery training is undesirably low, far from the mechanization level in the region. The results indicate that to increase machinery efficiency, in addition to training of farmers, efforts must be addressed at providing support services. To promote the suitable technology and the level of mechanization, appropriate technologies must be identified and the required machinery and equipment should be supplied under the supervision of research and extension centers. However, regarding the low level of innovation and also low acceptance of new technologies by local farmers, it is suggested that in addition to training and extension services, typical farms must be used and mechanization service companies should be encouraged and supported in the region to supply the technologies and machinery.

Abstract

In this study, the potential use of halophyte grasses, Aleuropus littoralis and A. lagopoides, on soil desalinization and lowering soil salinity was investigated under glasshouse conditions. The seeds of two species were collected from Rodasht area in Isfahan and grown with four salinity treatments obtained from different types of collected soils and replicated three times. Electrical conductivities of the four soil treatments were 12.4, 29.5, 43, and 69 dS/m. The results of mean comparison showed that shoot and root dry weight, sodium contents of dry weight and Na/K ratio were significantly different in both salinized species. Both species effectively reduced soil electrical conductivity by 23 to 42.5%. This was mainly due to ion absorbtion, and consequently, from Na+, Cl-, Mg2+, Ca2+ ionic reduction. In general, considerable amounts of ionic absorbtion and total soluble salt secretion through their salt glands appeared to have the most pronounced effects on decreasing soil salinity. Regarding 50% salt excretion by these species, growing these grasses could be a possible way to decrease soil salinity by grazing or harvesting salt crusted foliage from the site.

Abstract

The present study evaluates the influence of the El Ninio Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon on the cold season precipitation over Isfahan, Fars, Khuzestan, Chaharmahal-Bakhtyari, Bushehr and Kohgiluyeh-Boyerahmad provinces. The results indicate that the occurrence of La Nina events caused a 20% to 50% reduction in precipitation over Bushehr, Chaharmahal-Bakhtyari and southern Fars. The cold event did not change the total precipitation over the other parts of the region. In contrast to La Nina episodes, the occurrence of El Ninio events caused a 20% to 70% increase in rainfall in most of the study area. While the most highly wet conditions are related to the El Ninio events, the occurrence probability of the severe droughts has found to be low during such events. In association with La Nina events, the occurrence probability of severe drought was found to be low. Only in Khuzestan and southern parts of the Fars Provinces, this probability has increased to about 0.5.

Abstract

OF2 and VAP genes, probably involved in signal transduction of sugarbeet nematode resistance, have already been cloned in bacterial vector by AFLP molecular marker and a two-hybrid system, respectively. To examine their capability to introduce resistance in sugarbeet, the genes were transferred to plant expression vectors. For this reason, OF2 gene after isolation was inserted within T-DNA of pAM194 binary vector, downstream of CaMV35S constitutive promoter and also inserted within T-DNA of modified pBin121 binary vector, downstream of HS1pro-1 gene inducing promoter (responsible for nematode resistance). VAP gene after isolation was inserted within T-DNA of pAM194 plasmid, downstream of CaMV35S constitutive promoter. Thus, three new constructs were made in which genes of signal transduction pathway were expressed to give beet cyst nematode resistance. These plasmids were separately transferred to Agrobacterium rhizogenes, strain AR15834. In the next step, petiole explants of sugarbeet were inoculated with the bacterial cells. Transformation-derived hairy roots were analyzed by GUS staining and/or PCR and were then inoculated with nematode larvae. Primary results showed partial resistance against nematode larvae in some hairy roots. As a result, this resistance can be related to OF2 and VAP genes effect.

Watermelon (Citrullus Lanatus) cv. Charleston Gray is one of the most important cultivars grown in Iran. It has some good quantitative and qualitative characteristics but unfortunately is sensitive to Blossom End rot. To solve this problem, this experiment was conducted in a factorial manner in randomized complete block design with four replications in Research Station and Laboratories of Department of Horticulture, College of Agriculture, the University of Tehran, during 1997 & 1998. In this experiment, black polyethylene mulch was used and calcium nitrate was foliar sprayed at concentrations of 0, 4, and 6 g/L. Results indicated that mulch could increase yield by 85% over two years due to weed growth suppression and conserving soil moisture for a longer time. Foliage fresh weight, number and average weight of fruits per plant and precocity were also significantly affected by black polyethylene mulch. Furthermore, mulch reduced the number and weight of fruits affected by Blossom End rot by about 13% and 12.5% (average of two years), respectively. Calcium nitrate addition during both years had no significant effect on the measured fruit characteristics nor on Blossom End rot.

Abstract

Yield is a quantitative trait and improving grain yield through direct selection is time-consuming. Indirect selection consisting of selection indices is more promising. A field experiment was conducted during 1999-2000 growing season in two experimental locations (Kooshkak and Badjgah) of College of Agriculture, Shiraz University, Shiraz. Thirteen corn hybrids were used in a randomized complete block design with three replications in each location. Thirty-five traits were measured in five developmental stages (stem elongation, tasseling, blister, hard dough and physiological maturity) and combined analysis of variance and covariance were conducted. Finally, 12 traits were selected for constructing selection indices via path analysis. Two optimum selection indices were used in this experiment. In both selection indices, different combinations of traits applied as linear function (multivariate linear model) and coefficients of traits in combinations were calculated. The coefficient of indices were obtained from: b=P-1Ga, where b is the vector of index coefficients, P-1 is the inverse of phenotypical variance and covariance matrix, G is the matrix of genotypical variance and covariance and a is the column vector of traits heritability. In the first index, heritability of traits with the same sign was used as economic values. Selection index including grain yield and net assimilation rate in the second stage (NAR2) was the best. In the second index, the sign of genotypic correlation with yield was given to economic values. Finally, selection index including grain yield and NAR2 was the best, too. In both selection indices, correlation of selection indices with genotypic value was equal to 1. This was 14% higher than the first index including yield alone. In both selection indices, physiological indices including net assimilation, crop growth, and relative growth rates were the most important traits comprising the best selection indices.

In a pot experiment, the growth (Dry matter) responses of 18 rapeseed varieties to three levels of NaCl salinity induced by 1.2, 6, and 12 dS.m-1 were investigated using a factorial experiment with a randomized complete block design in 3 replications. The results indicated that salinity reduced total dry matter, Na concentration, K/Na ratio, ion selectivity of K versus Na, and leaf water potential while it increased K concentration. However, the leaf water potential of the plants had the highest and a significantly negative correlation with total dry matter accumulation. Therefore, it seemed that leaf water content of the plants could explain the tolerance or sensitivity responses to salinity. The rapeseed varieties were accordingly ranked into different groups. The varieties viz, Alice, Fonax, DP.94.8 and Licord were classified as saline tolerant group, and varieties such as Okapi, Akamar and Eurol as saline sensitive group. The remaining eight rapeseed varieties were moderately tolerant. Moreover, the response of rapeseed varieties viz. Consul, VDH8003-98 and Orient were different such that the above explanation could not be applied to them. Therefore, halophytic strategies for these three varieties might be worth further investigation.

Abstract

The vast pastures and agricultural development plans for dry farming and irrigated farming in Khuzestan Province depend on rain. This requires availability of annual precipitation prediction models to be used in the management decision-making process. In this research, the long-term daily precipitation data from 15 rain gauge stations in the study area were collected for study and a relationship between the early fall season precipitations of 42.5 mm (t42.5) and the annual precipitation was obtained. The results showed that the relationship was an inverse one such that the later the fall precipitation occurred, the greater the annual precipitation would be. To increase the coefficient of determination in the models, climatic variables such as Persian Gulf sea surface temperature and geographical characteristics (longitude, latitude, altitude, and long term mean annual precipitation) were used. Except for the long term mean annual precipitation and altitude, other variables did not increase the coefficient of determination. The final simple model found is as follows: Pa=184.787-1.891t42.5+0.855Pm , R2=0.704 where, Pa is the annual precipitation, t42.5 is the time from beginning of fall season for 42.5 mm of precipitation, and Pm is the long term mean annual precipitation.

Abstract

In Iran, about 75% of national rice production is supplied in Gilan and Mazandaran proviences which have the highest amount of precipitation. Seasonal prediction of rainfall induces significant improvement on yield production and on preventing climate hazardz over these feritle areas. Canonical correlation analysis (CCA) model was carried out evaluates the possibility of the prediction of winter rainfall according to the states of ENSO events. The time series of (southern oscilation index (SOI) and SST (sea surface temperature) over Nino's area (Nino's SST) are used as the predictors, and precipitation in Bandar Anzali and Noushahr are used as the predictands. Emperical orthogonal functions (EOF) were applied for reducing the number of original predictors variables to fewer presumably essential orthogonal variables. Four modes of variations (EOF1, EOF2, EOF3, EOF4) which account for about 92% of total variance in predictors field were retained and the others were considered as noise. Based on the retained EOFs and precipitation time series, the canonical correlation analysis (CCA) was carried out to predict winter precipitation in Noushahr and Bandar Anzali. The results indicated that the predictors considered account for about 45% of total variance in the rainfall time series. The correlation coefficents between the simulated and observed time series were significant at 5% significant level. For 70% of events the anomalies of observed and simulated values have the same sign indicating the ability of the model for reasonable prediction of above or below normal values of precipitation. For rainfall prediction, the role of Nino's SST (Nino4 in particular) was found to be around 10% more influential than SOI. .

Abstract

Clay minerals deserve special attention as they play a crucial role in many soils. The clay mineralogy of five gypsiferous soils from different landforms in eastern Isfahan was investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD). In addition, soil aggregates and wind-deposited sediments were examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and analyzed by energy dispersive X-ray analyzer (EDX). The results indicate the presence of palygorskite, mica, kaolinite, chlorite, and quartz with a trace amount of vermiculite and randomly interstratified layers in all soils. Smectite occurs in soils of both the piedmont plain and old river terrace, but not in the alluvial fan soils. Mica, chlorite, quartz, and kaolinite were probably inherited from the parent material. Palygorskite seems to increase with depth in the alluvial fan, whereas, in the old terrace soils, this clay mineral decreases with depth. Palygorskite present in alluvial fan soil appears to have been formed authigenically when the basin was covered with shallow hyper-saline lagoons toward the end of the Tertiary. Palygorskite in the old terrace seems to be mostly detrital and an eolian origin of palygorskite is likely because a large amount of palygorskite is present in upper soil horizons. A higher proportion of smectite in deep soils of the old terrace, as compared with palygorskite, suggests the possibility of authigenic formation of smectite from palygorskite. .
