Abstract

Dusts contain heavy metals such as Pb, Zn, Cu, Cr, Cd and As that can threat human's health and environment. Therefore, the spatial distribution of heavy metals concentration and soil pollution monitoring and environmental quality protection seem to be essential. To assess heavy metals pollution level in Ahvaz street dust, 115 street dust samples were collected from main pedestrians. The samples were analyzed by Atomic Absorption (AAS). The pollution level was estimated based on the geo-accumulation index (Igeo), contamination factor (CF) and the enrichment factor (EF). The average concentration values of Pb, Zn, Cu, Cr, Cd and As were found to be 197.6, 150.1, 179.7, 101, 5.6 and 14.2 mg/kg, respectively. Pearson's correlation coefficient also indicated that Pb, Zn, Cu and Cr had a significant correlation showing similar possible anthropogenic sources. On the other hand, Cd and As showed a lower correlation with other metals, indicating that they belonged to the geogenic sources. The results of contamination factor, enrichment factor and geo-accumulation index also indicated that Pb, Zn, Cu and Cd had a high contamination level.  Also, areas with high population density, heavy traffic volume, and industrial activities exhibited a high level of heavy metals contamination.

Abstract

Wind erosion is one of the environmental problems worldwide, particularly in arid and semi-arid areas of Iran. Different methods and models have been proposed to measure and monitor wind erosion in the recent years. One of the accurate models for measuring f wind erosion is the USEPA model. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the quantification of wind erosion with the USEPA model and the comparison of different interpolation methods for drowsing high-precision soil erosion mapping. For this purpose, 50 samples from 0-30 depth were taken from the study area. Based on the analysis of the physical properties of the soil, including the distribution of the primary and secondary particle sizes, climatic parameters such as evaporation and transpiration, rainfall, wind speed and also, the vegetation and topography characteristics of the area, the erosion rates of Q, Q30 and Q50 were measured. Interpolation methods including general kriging, IDW, LPI and RBF were compared. The results showed that the highest erosion emission rate of Q50 was 39 ton ha-1. The highest and lowest erosion rates for the Q30 index were 0.060 and 2.694 ton ha-1, respectively; for the Q index, the highest and lowest erosion rates were 0.009 and 0.055 ton ha-1, respectively. The results also showed that the IDW method for the Q50 index with the minimum error rate (RMSE) values of 3.94 and the mean absolute error (MAE) with the valueof 1.89 had the best performance among the studied models. The LPI model Q had the best performance with the lowest error (0.0086) and absolute absolute error (0.0021).

Abstract

Iran is located in the dry belt of the earth and is predicted to face water stress in the next half-century. Currently, the area of sugarcane cultivation in Khuzestan is over 85,000 hectares and due to the high water needs of sugarcane and drought conditions, optimization of water consumption and irrigation management is necessary to continue production. Therefore, in this study, the values of soil moisture, canopy cover, biomass yield in five treatments and irrigation levels (start of irrigation at 40%, 50%, 60%, 70%, and 80% soil moisture discharge) during 2 planting dates in the crop year 2015-2016 on sugarcane cultivar CP69-1062 in Amirkabir sugarcane cultivation and industry located in the south of Khuzestan was simulated by AquaCrop model. The measured data on the first culture date (D1) and the second culture date (D2) were used to calibrate and validate the model.  The results of NRMSE statistics in canopy cover simulation in calibration and validation sets with values of 2.1 to 15.6% and 3.8 to 18.3%, respectively, and in biomass simulation with values of 6.2 to 15.2%, and 9.5 to 12.6%, respectively and coefficient of determination (R2), range 0.98 to 0.99 indicated that the high ability of the AquaCrop model in simulation canopy cover and biomass yield. whereas, the values of NRMSE of soil depth moisture in the calibration and validation sets ranged from 11.6 to 23.8, and 12.2 to 22.7, respectively, with a coefficient of determination (R2), 0.73 to 0.96 (calibration) 0.8 to 0.93 (validation) showed less accuracy of the model in the simulation. The best scenario is related to the third proposal that water consumption, water use efficiency, and yield are 1710 mm, 1.53, and 42.27 tons per hectare, respectively, which shows a reduction in water consumption of 360 mm.

Abstract

Changes in land quality factors were investigated according to the change in land use of two conventional cropping systems in Khuzestan (Dimcheh region, periodic cultivation system, sugarcane, forest, and deforesting in Zaras region). The results showed that by the change of forest land use, organic carbon from 0.93 to 0.55%, cation exchange capacity (CEC) from 19.6 to 13.3 cmol/kg, C/N from 7.4 to 3.8%, the mean weight diameter of aggregate (MWD) from 1.7 to 1.3%, and microbial respiration from 0.11 to 0.06 mg of CO2 /gr of soil per day decreased and in contrast, the dispersible clay from 4.6 to 19.3% increased. PCA analysis for the parameters showed that five factors justified more than 90% of the variance in the values of FC, PWP, AW, and AF. In the Dimcheh region, the average volumetric moisture content of FC from 31.3% to 27.3%, available water from 12.9% to 9.8%, dispersible clay from 56.1% to 12.3%, and bulk density reduced from 1.6 to 1.4%, organic carbon from 0.45 to 0.78%, C/N from 6.3 to 10.0%, microbial respiration from 0.01 to 0.04 mg of CO2 /gr soil per day and MWD of aggregates increased from 0.77 to 1.3 mm. Five factors including FC, AW, BD, DC, and OM explained more than 90% of the variance.

Abstract

Parent material and topography are among the soil-forming factors that affect soil evolution by influencing different parameters. This study was conducted to compare the effect of marl and calcareous parent materials in different slope positions, including the summit, shoulder, foot-, and toe-slopes on soil clay mineralogy in the Karoon 3 Basin, east of Khuzestan Province. Four soil profiles in each of the two topo-sequences were dug. They were sampled based on their genetic horizons and some physical, chemical properties, and clay mineralogy were measured. The results showed that the type and abundance of clay minerals identified for both parent materials were more affected by topo-sequence position. The composition of minerals identified in the topo-sequence with marl parent materials included kaolinite, palygorskite, smectite, chlorite, mica, and quartz, and in the topo-sequence with calcareous parent materials, palygorskite, smectite, chlorite, mica minerals, and quartz, and most of the identified minerals were also observed in all positions in the C horizon. However, in marl parent materials kaolinite, and calcareous parent materials, smectite seems to have been formed pedogenically. The result of the association between Weaver and Beck indicated that most of the clay minerals are in the equilibrium of Palygorskite.
