Abstract

In order to study the effects of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) in water on the performance of broiler chickens, preliminary data were obtained on water resources of Isfahan Province. Complementary tests and analyses were also performed including physical, chemical and microbial ones. Six different water qualities based on TDS contents of less than 1000, 1000-2000, 2000-3000, 3000-4000, 4000-5000 and more than 5000 ppm were selected. The main experiment lasted for 7 weeks (7-56 days), using 288 chickens in a completely randomized design, with 3 replications, while, the environmental and genetic factors were controlled in an identical broiler housing.

The results showed that using water with different TDS contents had the most negative effects on mortality rate (%) in the rearing period and up to 56.2% mortality was recorded at the highest TDS content. Water consumption showed high and positive correlation (P < 0.05) with TDS (r = +0.74). Correlation between TDS and bedding moisture was also high (r = +0.65) and significant (P < 0.05). The differences between final body weight of control chickens and highest level of TDS were significant (P < 0.05). Feed intake also was affected by different TDS contents and showed similar results as with body weight. Increasing the TDS level decreased the abdominal fat in the female chickens and ash content of tibia in the male chickens. It is concluded that water TDS should be considered for the development of broiler chicken farms. Therefore, it is recommended that higher quality waters (with a TDS content of 3000 ppm) must be used for this purpose. Otherwise, appropriate systems should be used to improve physical and chemical composition of the water.

Abstract

Different Extractants have been proposed to assess available P in different soils. Olsen method is widely used to determine available P in calcareous soils of Iran. However, it has not been compared adequately with other extractants. The main objective of this experiment was to compare this procedure with some other methods. Thirty nine calcareous soil samples from Fars Province with different physico-chemical characteristics were examined for available P by nine extractants. Furthermore, the effects of four P levels (0, 50, 100, 200 µgPg-1 soil) on growth, P concentration and P uptake by corn were studied in a greenhouse experiment using 20 soil samples. The results indicated that the amount of extractable P decreased in the order, anion-exchange resin > Colwell > Morgan > Olsen > Bray P1 (1:50) > Soltanpour & Schawb > EDTA > Bray P1 (1:7) > Water. The amounts of P extracted by all methods, except that by Bray method, showed significant correlation. However, the correlation coefficients between resin, Olsen, Colwell and water were higher than the others. Regression analysis showed that P extracted by all methods, except Bray, was affected by organic matter and native Zn. Moreover, P removed by Bray method was decreased with an increase in calcium carbonate equivalent. Correlation between top dry weight, relative growth and P uptake and P extracted by resin, Colwell, Olsen and water were highly significant. Although the correlation coefficients between growth parameters and P extracted by Morgan and Soltanpour & Schawb were significant, they were of lower magnitude. Plant phosphorus concentration showed significant correlation with P extracted by Olsen and Colwell methods. In general, resin, Olsen and Colwell methods seem to be appropriate extractants for available P in the present study. However, to select the appropriate extractants, more research is needed.

Abstract

Successful implementation of socio-economic projects depends on the degree of planners’ awareness of farmers’ risk coefficient. Because agriculture is a risky activity, knowledge about the farmers’ attitudes toward risk in each area is essential. This research investigated the farmers’ risk behavior in Homayjan district in Sepidan township. Cross-section and time series data were collected from a random sample of farmers and from Agricultural Department of Fars Province, respectively. In this study, the Safety First Rule (SFR), Generalized Stochastic Production Function (GSPF) and Target Motad models were used.

The results indicated that in this area, farmers are risk averse in crop production, but they have a low risk coefficient in the use of modern inputs. Signs of GSPF revealed that the use of modern resource input reduces risk. Target Motad risk programming model confirmed that farmers are risk averse because with increasing risk, crops like wheat that have relatively stable prices and yield enter the model, while crops like onion that have high instability in price and yield are omitted from the model.

Abstract

Data of 1200 male and female chicks from 90 sires were used to estimate the heritabilities as well as genetic and phenotypic correlations of body measurements and carcass characteristics in three genetic groups, namely, crosses of native chickens with an exotic breed (group A), native chickens which were selected for two generations on the basis of 8th week body weight (group B) and a native control group (group C).

The effects of genetic group, sex and system (litter vs. cage) on body measurements (shank and breast traits) and carcass characteristics were studied. Data of body measurements were collected at 6th week of age, and carcass traits were recorded at slaughter time at 10th week of age (except breast angle which was recorded at 8th week).

All carcass traits and body measurements except shank were significantly affected by genetic groups (P<0.05). Sex and system of rearing did not have any significant effect on body measurements and carcass traits. Estimated heritabilities for body measurements and carcass traits showed a wide range. Breast and shank measurements had the lowest and those related to abdominal fat had the highest heritabilities. Phenotypic correlations for all of the body measurements were lower than genetic correlations among these traits. Genetic correlations between body measurements and carcass characteristics were mostly significant

Abstract

This experiment was carried out to study the effect of ionophore drugs (Salinomycin, Lasalocid and their combination) on the performance of broiler chicks. Also their relationship with methionine (three levels) was evaluated. 1215 one-day-old commercial broiler chicks (Arian) were divided into 81 groups, 15 chicks per group, and tested in a completely randomized design with a 3×3×3 factorial experiment and three levels (0/0, recommended and 1.5 times recommended) of drugs and three levels (0.0, 1% and 0.2%) of supplemental methionine.

The results indicated that these drugs reduced body weight gain significantly (p<0.05) at 21 and 56 days of the experiment. Decreasing feed consumption and increasing feed conversion was significant (p<0.05) due to Lasalocid supplementation. Increasing drug level significantly (p<0.05) reduced body weight gain and feed intake and feed conversion was increased at 21 to 42 and 0 to 56 days of the experiment. The effect of supplemental methionine on body weight of 42 days (P<0.05) and feed conversion at 21 to 42 and 0 to 56 days (p<0.01) were significant. The interactions between drug type and drug level on body weight gain, feed consumption and feed conversion were significant (p<0.05). Lasalocid significantly (p<0.05) increased water intake. Drugs did not affect litter moisture and mortality. The results showed that Salinomycin was better than Lasalocid. Also supplemental methionine was not effective in compensating for the growth depression caused by ionophore drugs.

Abstract

In this study 2510 records of reproductive traits from the mating of 879 ewes with 164 rams of Bakhtiari sheep breed, during 1989 to 1997, were used in order to estimate the effects of environmental factors on their reproductive performance.

The mean and standard errors of reproductive traits were as follows: conception rate, 0.9±0.01 number of lambs born per ewe exposed, 1.06±0.01 number of lambs born alive per ewe exposed, 1.01 ±0.0l, number of lambs weaned per ewe exposed, 0.93±0.01 litter size alive at birth, 1.10±0.01 litter size at weaning, 1.01±0.02 and number of lambs weaned per lambing ewe, 1.09±0.01. The effect of joining year was highly significant (P, 0.01) for all of the considered reproductive traits. Age of ewe at joining time was also a significant (P<0.05 and 0.01) source of variation for most of the reproductive traits. Maximum reproductive performance occurred for ewes of 4 to 5 years of age. Mating time was also a significant factor (P<0.05 and 0.01) for all of the reproductive traits. Maximum reproductive performance occurred for ewes mated during the first half of the mating season. Type of birth was a highly significant factor (P<0.0l) for the number of lambs alive and weaning traits. However, due to significant effects of environmental factors on considered traits, and in order to increase reproductive efficiency, one should improve environmental conditions (barn, management, feeding system and ... ) as well as organizing mating plan for the first half of the mating season and make a suitable age combination of ewe herd. In this combination, decreasing the percentage of ewes older than five years could benefit herd performance.

Abstract

Mutual understanding among officials and followers has been a point of concern in behavioral management. Natural resources extension which, from the very first step, is concerned with the exploration of practical problems is in serious need of an atmosphere of mutual understanding between agents and clientele. In this research, attention was drawn toward the measurement of mutual understanding between executives and nomads regarding nomads’ problems in utilizing natural resources and breeding cattle in Isfahan Province. For this purpose, initially, understanding between nomads and natural resources administrators (extension agents and specialists) regarding their respective problems were measured and compared. The research population of the study consisted of two groups. The first, involved 32 administrators, extension agents and specialists, and the second, 75 nomad families. Two different questionnaires were developed for the study as research instruments in which 52 items regarding nomad problems were included. Each part of the population was asked to rank the items accordingly. Then, some nonparametric tests such as Kruscall Wallis and Mann Whitny U tests were applied to compare the mean rank for each item within and between the two groups.

Results showed that the administrators and nomads had different attitudes in only two of the 52 items. Administrators had no statistically significant different attitude in 52 problems. Eliminating the discriminating items, the attitudes in only two groups were compared and results showed that they had no significant difference in the remaining 48 items. Therefore, extension agents can follow these problems based on their mean rank priority in their developmental projects. This method of data reduction and understanding field constraints can be applied to the studies dealing with planning agricultural and/or natural resources development projects through extension education.

Abstract

Marine products are currently important in Iran due to the following reasons: 1) aquatics are recognized as safe and healthy food by food scientists 2) because of low dependence of fishing technology on foreign resources, they are more reliable sources for protein and food security. Therefore, it is important to increase labor productivity using advanced fishing technology under a sustainable fishery management policy. In general, the prevailing methods of fishing in the southern coasts of Iran can be classified into three groups based on the level of technology and the length of journey made: traditional, semi-industrial, and industrial. In this study, labor productivity in the traditional and semi-industrial groups were compared using data obtained from a sample of 35 fishermen in Bushehr Province. To determine the marginal and average labor productivities, transcendental production functions were estimated for fish and shrimp, separately. The findings indicated that the marginal and average productivities of labor in semi-industrial fishing were significantly higher than in traditional fishing.

Abstract

Diallel crosses of six breeding inbred lines of corn (Zea mays L.) were used to estimate combining abilities, heterosis and some other genetic parameters for yield and some of its components. Parents, 15 F1 crosses and 4 filler genotypes, were evaluated in a 5×5 simple lattice design. For all the traits studied, except seed length, the efficiency of lattice design was less than one. Therefore, data were analysed as a randomized complete block and after eliminating the filler genotypes, Grriffing’s method 2 with mixed B model was used in the genetic analyses.

General and specific combining ability (GCA and SCA) mean squares were statistically significant for all traits studied. The ratios of GCA to SCA mean squares were greater than one for all traits, except for the number of seed rows per ear, indicating the importance of non-additive gene effects in their genetic control. Low heritability estimates and degrees of dominance lower than one were further evidence of the presence of non additive gene effects for all the traits studied, except for the number of seed rows per ear. Therefore, production of single cross hybrids in order to take advantage of non-additive gene effects is of prime importance for grain yield, number of seeds per ear row, l00-seed weight, seed length, ear length, and comb percentage. For genetic improvement of number of seed rows per ear, selection methods for parental lines will be more efficient. In the hybrids studied, number of seed per ear row and l00-seed weight played a more important role in the observed variations in yield. In general, hybrids 4×5 and 5×6 with high SCA for number of seed per ear row, l00-seed weight and grain yield were considered favorable for the conditions of this study.

Abstract

The difficulties of control of greenhouse whitefly on crops and greenhouse plants make extensive studies and investigations necessary in different areas of Iran. Morphological and biological studies were carried out on a prevailing species of greenhouse whitefly, Trialeurodes vaporariorum Westwood, in Isfahan.

In this study, six species of whiteflies T. vaporariorum on Althaea sp. and Lantana camara, Bemisia tabaci Gennadius, B. argentifolii Bellows & Perring and B. hancoki Corbett, on Lantana camara, Aleyrodes proletella L. on Brassica sp. and Aleyrodes rosae on Rosa sp. were collected. These species were described using different identification keys. Morphological characteristics and different growth stages of greenhouse whitefly including egg, 1st to 4th nymphal instars and adult were defined and figures drawn. Biological studies were conducted in 24±1°C, 65±5% RH and 16:8 (L:D) on eggplant, solanum melongena. The developmental time for egg, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th nymphal instars was 7.33±0.48, 3.37±0.52, 3.25±0.45, 2.51±0.26 and 7.66±0.83 days, respectively. The total period from egg to adult lasted 24.12±0.51 days. The number of eggs laid in 24 hours varied between 1 to 10 with an average of 5.93±1.67. Life-span of the male ranged between 19 to 23 with an average of 20.88±1.54 and that of the female varied between 20 to 28 with an average of 26.44±1.17 days. Four nymphal instars were identified and three substages for the 4th nymphal instars were determined. There was a positive correlation between nymphal instars and average body length and width. Since only male offsprings were produced through parthenogenesis, the strain of greenhouse whitefly in Isfahan was found to be European.

Abstract

In this research, the hydraulic behavior of furrow irrigation was investigated under cut-back, Walker-Skogerboe and conventional methods at the three experimental farms of Lavark, Shervedan, and Isfahan University of Technology for three irrigation events. In each farm, data were collected for each of the above methods with at least three replications including furrow shape, furrow length, furrow slope, soil texture, advance and furrow inflow and outflow.

The parameters of Kostiakov-Lewis infiltration function were determined using the volume balance method. The deep percolation ratio, runoff ratio and application efficiency were then computed.

The results showed that deep percolation ratio was higher in the cut-back method as compared to the Walker-Skogerboe method (18.6% as compared to 13.7%) and the runoff ratio was less in the cut-back method as compared to those in the Walker-Skogerboe and conventional methods (12.4% as compared to 16 and 20.6%, respectively). The effect of the two parameters of deep percolation ratio and runoff ratio caused, in general, the application efficiency to be less in the conventional method than those in the cut-back and Walker-Skogerboe methods (42.7% as compared to 69 and 70%, respectively). In general, the cut-back method had a higher application efficiency in heavy texture soils as compared to light texture soils (73.9% as compared to 51.2%).

Abstract

Life in central Iran depends on the Zayandehrood river, making the preservation of its quality important. Salinization and pollution of the flow as a result of different organic and inorganic pollutants create serious threats to the environment and to the agricultural activities in the region. Although the role of the main drains discharged into the Zayandehrood in changing its quality is well known, little information is available on the volume and quality of the discharged drains. The purpose of this research was to study the quantity and quality of three main drains (Zoab-Ahan, Rudasht and Segzi) discharging into the Zayandehrood, Monthly samples were taken from each drain and their chemical properties were measured in 1998. The discharge rates were also measured simultaneously at sections near the discharge points.

The results showed that all three drains were alkaline and, therefore, had no negative effects on the pH of the river flow. Mean annual EC of Zoab-Ahan, Rudasht and Segzi drains were 5.56, 27.18 and 42.41 dS/m, respectively, and the salt loads discharged into the river by these drains were 39258.4, 37672.9 and 259781.2 ton/year, respectively. Annual mean N concentrations were 4.49, 3.92 and 4.18 mg/L and annual mean P concentrations were 0.26, 0.16 and 0.12 mg/L in the drains, respectively. The most important effect of the drains on the Zayandehrood was salinization, especially in the lower parts of the river. The increase in soluble salt contents of the river after Segzi drain discharge was so high that it made the water thereafter unusable for any purpose.

Abstract

The main objective of the present study was to investigate the production and marketing of Iranian saffron. About 99% of Iranian saffron is produced in Khorasan Province. Therefore, Khorasan was selected for the current study. Data were collected through the stratified random sampling method from 232 saffron producers in Torbat Heidarieh, Ghaenat and Gonabad regions through interviews in fall 1999. The production functions of saffron were estimated by using transcendental forms for the three study regions. Technical efficiencies for saffron producers were estimated using transcendental stochastic frontier production functions. Finally, wholesale, retail and marketing margins as well as marketing efficiency were estimated.

The results of the current study revealed that farmers were not using some of the inputs optimally. Study of the technical efficiency of saffron growers indicated that there was a considerable possibility of increasing production by increasing farmers’ efficiencies. The average of wholesale, retail and marketing margins of one kilogram of saffron were estimated to be 483, 410 and 893 thousand Rials, respectively, in the three study regions. Also, marketing efficiency was calculated at 155%. Finally, a marketing channel as a part of marketing strategy was proposed for Iranian saffron.

Abstract

Knowledge of the effects of row spacings and seeding rates on dual-purpose forage and seed production of an annual legume crop is essential for its proper agronomical exploitation. In this study, the effects of various row spacings and seeding rates on dry matter and seed yield in berseem clover (Trifolium alexandrinum L.) were evaluated in two consecutive years. The experimental design was a split-plot with four row spacings as main plot treatments in a randomized complete block design with four replications, and five seeding rates were allocated to subplots.

Combined analysis of variance of the two-year data showed that both row spacings and seeding rates influenced dry matter yield (DM), seed yield, plant height, 1000-seed weight and harvest index. Years, as well as two- and three-factor interactions did not affect the seed yield whereas row spacing × seeding rate, and year × seeding rate significantly affected the DM. The mean comparisons indicated that row spacings of 30 and 45 cm produced the highest DM of 3912.2 and 3900 kg/ha 45 and 60 cm spacings showed the highest seed yield of 1045.4 and 1093.3 kg/ha, respectively. 24 and 20 kg/ha seeding rates ranked the best in giving 1244.7 and 1223 kg/ha seed yield, respectively. The seeding rate of 16 kg/ha in the first year and 20 kg/ha in the second year produced the highest DM yield with means of 3837.5 and 3875.3 kg/ha, respectively. Regarding the dual-purpose of forage and seed production in berseem clover, 20 kg/ha seeding rate at 45 cm row spacing can be recommended for Isfahan region and for other comparable environmental conditions.

Abstract

Carotenoids are one of the most important and widely distributed pigments in nature and have essential biological functions in organisms. They also impart distinctive and attractive coloration to the breeding animals. Over the past two decades, application of microbial carotenoids has attracted the attention of researchers due to their natural and economic advantages. However, carotenoid producing yeasts with lactose assimilating capacity have rarely been studied and there are few references on the use of lactose as a carbon substrate, such as whey, for the biosynthesis of yeast carotenoids. In this study, a red carotenoid-producing yeast, Rhodotorula acheniorum, was isolated from the sap of birch trees at Masseh Chal in the Taleghan village. The yeast thus isolated was identified through microscopic, macroscopic and biochemical tests.

The yeast has both the abilities of lactose assimilation and carotenoid production. The optimal conditions of culture were determined and maximum biomass and carotenoid production were 9.9 g/lit, 290 µg/g, respectively. Chemical analyses of extracted carotenoids have shown that the major portion of the yeast consists of β-carotene, torulene and torularhodin. With regard to the fact that whey is one of the by-products of cheese industries and that its proper disposal has long been a major problem, the most desirable way of handling this waste is to utilize it as a substrate in the production of useful products such as carotenoids.

Abstract

Macaroni is a food product generally considered as one of the paste products. These products are produced from semolina that is, in turn, produced through special processing of milled durum wheat. In order to examine the effect of α-amylase on macaroni quality, three cultivars, namely Yavarous, Zardak and Altar 84, were chosen from each of which some wheat sprouts were prepared and mixed with unsprouted samples to obtain three ranges of falling numbers of 500-1000, 300-350 and 150-200 seconds.

The results from this study specified that the active presence of α-amylase in the samples reduced cooking time and colouring of the macaroni, while small amounts of the enzyme improved the breakage and modulus of elasticity of the samples. The α-amylase enzyme showed no effect on the colour of semolina and the macaroni stickiness.

Abstract

The present experiment evaluates the effects of some carbohydrate sources (corn, barley and millet) and the replacement of corn with different levels (0, 25, 50, 75, 100%) of barley and millet on the performance of common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.). In a completely randomized block design, 540 grower fish with an average body weight of 70 gr, were divided into 27 groups, 20 fish per group. Nine different diets were used and each diet was assigned to triplicate groups of fish for eight weeks.

Analyses of data showed that the replacement of corn by barley and millet resulted in a higher weight gain. The highest and lowest weight gains were observed with diets having 50 percent barley and 100 percent millet substitutions, respectively, although the differences with the control diet were not significant. Diets with 50 and 100 percent barley for corn substitutions showed a greater specific growth rate (SGR). As for the food conversion ratio (FCR), all the diets having barley and millet, irrespective of substitution levels, showed a better FCR relative to the control diet. However, the diet with 100 percent barley substitution had the best FCR, but no significant differences were observed (P>0.05) with the control diet. In general, the performance of barley was better than that of corn and millet, and millet was relatively better than corn. However, these results indicate that barley and millet can be suitable replacements for imported corn in diets used for common carp.

Solarization of field soil through mulching with transparent polyethylene sheets alone and in integration with farm yard manure (40 T/ha) and/or metalayl (25 kg/ha) during summer 1994-95 for five weeks in Isfahan resulted in an increase in temperature of 10 °C (± 1) and moisture preservation of up to 82%. Solarization effectively reduced foot-rot of cucumber (Phytophthora drechsleri) in the above treatments up to 88%, 96% and 95%, respectively.

Solarization, farm yard manure and their integration reduced the infection of Meloidogyne javanica up to 50%, 57% and 83% while plant parasitic nematodes were also reduced to 72%, 75% and 86%, respectively. The populations of free living nematodes increased only in farm yard manure and in integration with solarization by 30% and 53%, respectively.

Solarization effectively reduced the populations of almost all weeds by around 100%, except for Cyperus rotundus and Sonchus asper which were reduced by 59% and 44%, respectively.

Abstract

In order to compare the effect of drip and furrow irrigation methods with different quantities of water (50%, 75%, and 100% of the amount of water evaporated from class A pan evaporation during irrigation intervals) on yield and quality of tomato, an experiment was conducted on a silty loam soil in Mashhad Agricultural Research Station. The experimental design was a factorial trial with completely randomized blocks and. four replications.

The results showed that the highest yield (51 t/ha) was obtained from the treatment of drip irrigation with 100% water application. This amount was 4.5 tons higher than the yield from furrow irrigation treatment. Deficit irrigation by 25 and 50 percent decreased total yield by 34.7% and 67.95% in the drip irrigation method and by 27.57% and 64.29% in the furrow irrigation, respectively. Water use efficiency in drip irrigation was two times higher than that in the furrow treatment. Quality and chemical composition of the fruits were not significantly different in the two irrigation methods. Increasing the water deficit, however, increased the amount of soluble solids of the fruits.

Abstract

This experiment was conducted to determine the requirements of vitamin supplement and available phosphorus in broiler chickens from 42 to 56 days of age. In a completely randomized design, with a 3×3×3 factorial arrangement, 270 one-day-old commercial broiler chicks were divided into 27 groups (replicates) with 9 treatments, 3 replicates and 10 chicks in each group. Each of the nine diets was given to each treatment from 42 days of age. Levels of vitamin supplement were 0.5, 0.25, 0% and available phosphorus levels were 0.27, 0.22, 0.16%. Diets were isocaloric and isoprotein. Group weight and feed consumption of each replicate were determined after 42 and 56 days of age and daily gain, daily feed consumption and feed conversion were calculated. Percent of carcass components and tibia ash were determined.

Results indicated that removal of vitamin supplement from 42 to 56 days of age did not have any significant effects on daily gain, daily feed consumption, feed conversion, live weight, viscera, abdominal fat, carcass weight, wings, neck and back bone. Also, reduction of available phosphorus did not have any significant effect on daily feed consumption, feed conversion, live weight, viscera, abdominal fat, carcass weight, breast meat, femurs, wings, neck and tibia ash. Interaction between vitamin and phosphorus were significant for daily gain, daily feed consumption, live weight, wings, neck and tibia ash (P<0.005) and were highly significant for breast meat, femurs, and back bone (P<0.00l).
