Abstract

Changes in Climate parameters have been accelerated in the coming age, which can affect agricultural activities directly and indirectly. Temperature and precipitation are the most complex climatic factors. Spectral analysis is a scientific and efficient technique used to recognize and detect the hidden behaviors of these variables. In this research, in order to study and analyze the temperature and precipitation return periods using spectral analysis, the statistics of climate parameters (precipitation, mean, maximum and minimum temperature) for a period of 27 years (1989-2015) were used for the sustainable land management. For this purpose, the climatic data of temperature and precipitation entered the MATLAB software environment and Periodogram of each of the climatic parameters was drawn in a separate way. The results of each Periodogram study showed that the absolute minimum of temperature had significant cycles with the return periods of 3.8 and 2.4 years; the absolute maximum of temperature had a significant cycle with a return period of 2.1 years and the mean temperature was significant with a return period of 2.7 years. Also, the review of the Periodogram related to precipitation showed a significant cycle with a return period of 3.4 years. The Results from studying cycles indicated the existence of short-term return periods for climate variables in the region. Given this issue and the need to protect agricultural products, especially garden products, it should be done by applying water and soil resources management methods, including creating terraces and increasing soil roughness; Also, cultivation of appropriate plant species for the suitable regional climatic conditions, Drought resistant and low water requirement, the most optimal conditions could be created for the cultivation of horticultural and agricultural products.

Abstract

Saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks) is one of the most important soil physical characteristics that plays a major role in the soil hydrological behaviour. It is mainly affected by the soil structure characteristics. Aggregate size distribution is a measure of soil structure formation that can affect Ks. In this study, variations of Ks were investigated in various aggregate size distributions in an agricultural soil sample. Toward this aim, eight different aggregate size distributions with the same mean weight diameter (MWD= 4.9 mm) were provided using different percentages of aggregate fractions consisting of (< 2, 2-4, 4-8 and 8-11mm). The Ks values along with other physicochemical properties were determined in different aggregate size distributions. Based on the results, significant differences were found among the aggregate size distributions in Ks, particle size distribution, porosity, aggregate stability, electrical conductivity (EC), organic matter and calcium carbonate. The aggregate size distributions with a higher percentage of coarse aggregates (4-8 and 8-11 mm) also showed higher Ks as well as clay percentage. A positive correlation was also observed between Ks and clay, aggregate stability and EC, whereas sand showed a negative correlation with Ks. No significant correlations were found between Ks and silt, porosity and organic matter. Further, multiple linear regression analysis showed that clay and aggregate stability were the two soil properties controlling Ks in the aggregate size distributions (R2=0.80, p<0.01). Aggregate stability was recognized as the most important indicator for evaluating the Ks variations in various aggregate size distributions.

Abstract

Due to the limited freshwater, farmers have to use exotic waters such as seawater. One of the management methods is the conjunction use of fresh and seawater. The goal of this study was to investigate the effect of conjunctive irrigation with seawater and fresh water on the yield and yield components of Dill (Anethum graveolens L.) in greenhouse conditions. The research was done based on a completely randomized design including 3 replications as pot planting in Gorgan University of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources during 2016. In this study, there were five irrigation regimes (Irrigation with one-third of the sea water with tsp water, Irrigation with half seawater and then one more half with fresh water, Alternate irrigation with seawater and tap water, and Conjunction irrigation). The results inducted that the effect of different irrigation regimes on Umbrellas per plant, umbels per umbrellas and thousand kernel weights was highly significant (P<0.01), but the number of leaves per plant, branches number, the number of seeds per plant, and the seed number in umbrellas were significant at 5 percent level (P<0.05). In this study, all parameters were decreased significantly with the increase at all levels of water salinity. The results showed that one-third seawater and tap water irrigation regime, as compared to other regimes after control regimes, had the highest Umbrellas per plant, umbels per umbrellas, the number of leaves per plant, branches number, the number of seeds per plant, and the seed number in umbrellas. One-third, half alternate, alternate and the mixture of sea water and tap water resulted in the decrease of thousand kernel weights, reaching ti 13.6, 19.0, 30.1 and 65.1 percent, respectively.

Abstract

Detergents are the main organic pollutants in the industrial and domestic wastewater. Electro-chemistry methods are advanced purification methods developed with high efficiency features. The goal of this study was to investigate the possibility of using electrocoagulation and the complementary flocculation process to achieve the highest removal efficiency of the detergent COD. So, with iron electrode, synthetic samples at the concentrations of 500, 750 and 1000 mg/l (with COD of 217, 268 and 370 mg/l, respectively) and with the initial pH levels of 5, 7.3 and 9 were tested. Variable parameters during the electrocoagulation process included the current duration at 3, 5 and 10 minutes, and the current density was at 4, 10, 16 and 22 mA/cm2. The primary results showed that in the optimum conditions, the coagulation process and complementary flocculation could reduce the sample’s COD with an initial concentration of detergent (500 mg/l) from 217 mgO2/l to 81.30 mgO2/l. The electrocoagulation method could reduce the chemical oxygen demand to below the standard limit of environmental discharge (200 mgO2/l) and compensate for the possibility of the irrigation of green spaces due to water shortages.

Abstract

Increasing the productivity and conservation of limited water resources in the agricultural sector, especially in the agricultural sub-sectors, is closely related to the revision of the traditional approaches of production system in the agricultural sector of developing countries. The aim of this study was to develop the optimal combination of crop production in Varamin Agricultural and Animal Husbandry Complex as one of the leading agricultural units in the agricultural sector of Varamin County with the emphasis on increasing water use efficiency. For this purpose, the statistical data and information of the 2015-2016 crop year of the complex were used in the framework of the multi-criteria decision making model. The results showed that in the optimum crop pattern in this unit, the priorities of maximizing net energy production and the annual profit as the economic goals would be significantly aggregated with the goal of increasing water use efficiency. Accordingly, in the optimum condition, net energy production was increased by 10%, gross profit was improved by 4%, and water use efficiency was promoted by 15%. Therefore, according to the results, it is suggested that, in order to achieve the economic aspirations and increase water use efficiency in Varamin Agricultural and Animal Husbandry Complex, wheat, alfalfa, silage and maize corn, based on the values calculated in this study, constitute the main combination of the crop production pattern.

Abstract

Sediment selectivity during transport may provide basic information for evaluating on-site and off-site impacts of the soil erosion. Limited information is, however, available on the selectivity of sediments in rill erosion, particularly in the rainfed furrows. Toward this, the sediment selectivity was investigated in three soil textures (loam, loamy sand sand clay loam) under 10% slope using 90 mm.h-1 rainfall intensity for 40 min. Soil samples were passed from a 10 mm sieve and packed in to the erosion flume with 0.4m × 4 m in dimensions. Particles size distribution (PSD) was determined in the sediments (PSDs) and compared with the original soil PSD (PSDo). The proportion of PSDs and PSDo was stated as PSDs/PSDo to show the selectivity of soil particles by rill erosion. Based on the results, all three soils appeared as the coarse particles (coarse sand and very coarse sand) in sediments with the PSDs/PSDo>1, indicating the higher selectivity of these particles by rill erosion. Loamy sand was the most susceptible soil to rill erosion among the studied soils, which generated a higher runoff (0.0035 m2.s-1) and sediment load (0.1 kg.m-1.s-1) during rainfall. The PSDs of this soil were similar to those of the original soil PSD. This study revealed that the stability of aggregates could be regarded as the major soil factor controlling rill erosion rate and the sediment selectivity in the semi-arid soils. With an increase in the water-stable aggregates, soil infiltration rate and as a consequence, shear stress of flow could be decreased in the rills.

Abstract

Location of soil moisture sampling in irrigation management is of special importance due to the spatial variability of soil hydraulic characteristics and the development of root system. The objective of this study was determination of the suitable location for soil moisture sampling in drip-tape irrigation management, which is representative of the average moisture in the soil profile (θavg) as well. For this purpose, soil moisture distribution (θij) at the tassel stage of maize and one irrigation interval (68-73 day after plant) were measured at the end of season. The results showed more than 70% length of the root of plant was located in 30 cm of the soil depth. By accepting ±10% error in relation to the averaged soil moisture, some region of soil profile was determined which was in the acceptable error range and also near the averaged soil moisture (0.9θavgRec<1.1θavg). By overlapping θRec in one irrigation interval, the appropriate location for soil moisture sampling was the horizontal distance from drip-tape line to 20 cm and the depth of 10-20 cm from the soil surface. To determine the appropriate place for soil moisture sampling, the development of root system and the maximum concentrated root length density in the soil profile extracting the maximal soil moisture should be taken in to account, parallel with the averaged soil moisture.

Abstract

Nonlinear weirs are regarded as important hydraulic structures for water level adjustment and flow control in channels, rivers and dam reservoirs. One example of non-linear weirs is shaped as curved-zigzag. The crest axis of these weirs is non-linear. At a given width, the crest length is greater than that of the conventional linear weirs. Thus, they achieve a higher flow rate for an identical hydraulic load. This research experimentally focused on the discharge coefficient and flow rate of curved weirs with three different curve radii in two triangular linear and zigzag shapes. The discharge coefficients of these weirs were comparatively explored in terms of the hydraulic performance as a function of the total hydraulic load to weir crest height ratio (hd/P) and curvature angle (θ) (or curve radius). The results indicated that for the same hydraulic load, the increase of θ (the decrease in curve radius) led to a lower discharge coefficient; this was first because of the increased topical rise of water level, and then the more indirect path with a greater curvature through which the flow had to transport. Both factors could negatively affect the water discharge coefficient. In practice, the runoff coefficient at a weir with a curve radius of R/w=1.25 was approximately 8.5% greater than that of a weir with a curve radius of R/w=0.75 under a hydraulic load of 0.2.

Abstract

Due to unsuitable soil physical conditions, calcareous soils, and the existence of a huge amount of sulfur in the country, the study of sulfur effects on the soil structure and other soil properties is necessary. Therefore, the effects of different rates of sulfur including: 0, 750, 1500 and 3000 kg/ha, when accompanied by Halothiobacillus neapolitanus bacteria, on the soil properties in the corn-wheat rotation in two years were investigated. Parameters of soil pH, EC, sulphate, organic carbon, soil structure and wheat yield were measured. For the quantification of soil structure and quantity evaluation of sulfur effect on the soil structure, with measuring the aggregate size distribution, the mean weight diameter (MWD) and geometric mean diameter (GMD) of the aggregate indices, and the amounts of fractal dimension were determined. The r results indicated that with the progress of the experiment and further application of sulfur along with thiobacillus bacteria, aggregation and aggregate stability were increased. The effect of sulfur treatments on MWD and GMD was significant; based on quantification indices, it had 28 percent positive effect on the soil structure. Sulfur with 3 percent reduction of fractal dimension had a significantly positive effect on the soil structure. Application of sulfur decreased a small amount of soil pH and increased 12 percent of the soil EC and 40 percent of the soil sulphate. So soil structure improvement and reclamation of soil physical condition can be very effective on the soil conservation and sustainability of the production resources and the conservation of environment.

Abstract

Evaluation of groundwater hydro chemical characteristics is necessary for planning and water resources management in terms of quality. In the present study, a self-organizing map (SOM) clustering technique was used to recognize the homogeneous clusters of hydro chemical parameters in water resources (including well, spring and qanat) of Kerman province; then, the quality classification of groundwater samples was investigated for drinking and irrigation uses by employing SOM clusters. Patterns of water quality parameters were visualized by SOM planes, and similar patterns were observed for those parameters that were correlated with each other, indicating a same source. Based on the SOM results, the 729-groundwater samples in the study area were grouped into 4 clusters, such that the clusters 1, 2, 3, and 4 contained 73%, 6.2%, 6.7%, and 14.1% of groundwater samples, respectively. The increase order of electrical conductivity parameter in the clusters was as 1, 4, 3 and 2. The results of water quality index based on the entropy weighting (EWQI) showed that all of the samples with excellent and good quality (36.3% of samples) for drinking belonged to the cluster 1. According to the Wilcox diagram, 435-groundwater samples (81.7%) in the cluster 1 had the permitted quality for irrigation activities, and the other 285-groundwater samples were placed in all four clusters, indicating the unsuitable quality for irrigation. The Piper diagram also revealed that the dominant hydro chemical faces of cluster 1 were Na-Cl, Mixed Ca-Mg-Cl and Ca-HCO3, whereas the clusters 2, 3, and 4 had the Na-Cl face. This study, therefore, shows that the SOM approach can be successfully used to classify and characterize the groundwater in terms of hydrochemistry and water quality for drinking and irrigation purposes on a provincial scale.

Abstract

Selection of drainage equation with acceptable accuracy has always been a challenge for designers to design subsurface drainage systems. In this research, seven steady state drainage equations were used for predicting daily and cumulative drainage rate on a farmland of sugarcane in Imam agro-industrial Company. These drainage equation included Hooghoudt, Ernst, Kirkham and Dagan that have been developed in the past and Mishra and Singh, Henine and Yousfi et al that recently developed. The statistical indices consist of P-value, RMSE, R2 and Percentage Error of estimating cumulative drainage rate were calculated for Hooghoudt equation 0.9501, 1.49 (mm/day), 0.80 and -0.19%, respectively. For Ernst equation 0.0001, 2.46 (mm/day), 0.34 and 16.98%, respectively. The result of performance of drainage equations revealed that Hooghoudt and Ernst equation were as the equations with the highest and lowest accuracy in predicting drainage rate, respectively. Also from the newly developed equations, the Yousfi et al equation was found with relatively well accuracy to predict the drainage rate. This equation was placed in second rank after Hooghoudt equation and other equations showed poor performance. Thus, with selection of the appropriate drainage rate, the Hooghoudt equation is suggested for designing of drain spacing in medium to heavy textured soils such as sugarcane agro-industrial.

Abstract

Limited information is available on the effect of residues rates and slope direction on dryland wheat
(Triticum aestivum L.) yield.  This study was carried out to determine the effects of residues rates and tillage direction on grain yield and yield components of the Sardary wheat in a dryland region in Zanjan. Five wheat residues rates (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% surface cover) were applied and incorporated into soil in two slope directions (along the slope and on contour lines) using the randomized complete blocks design with three replications in a land with 10% slope steepness. Overall, thirty plots with 2m × 5 m dimensions were installed in the field and wheat grain yield and yield components were determined for growth period from 2015-2016. Results indicated that grain yield and yield components were significantly affected by the residues rates and slope direction and their interaction. In contour tilled plots, wheat grain yield (1.78 to per hectare), thousand grain weight (42.26 kg) and wheat height (55.11 cm) were 5.32, 5.01, 16.19 and 1.36 percent more than the plots tilled along the slope. The highest grain yield was found in 75% of residue (2.45 ton per hectare) under contour line direction which was about 53% bigger than control treatment (0% straw mulch) under along the slope. This study indicated that the application of straw mulch before cultivation and incorporating into soil using contour line tillage are proper soil management methods to obtain higher wheat yield in this dryland region.

Abstract

One of the important elements in mechanized irrigation is to know the relation between suction force (matric force) and soil moisture, which is referred to as moisture curve. The shape and coefficients of this curve are influenced by the texture and structure of the soil and can change with soil structure modification.  The most important goals of this study were to evaluate the effect of using zeolite on water holding capacity and coefficients of moisture curve patterns of two sandy and loamy soil texture, the effect of using zeolite on the shape and soil moisture curve coefficients based on various models, some of them so far in Iran, zeolite was added to soils at levels of consumption (2, 5 and 10%). The moisture content of each soil was determined at various points in 12 points using a Dicagon machine.  Soil moisture curve coefficients using software and fittings of six Brooks and Corey models, Kosugi, Durner, Fredlund and Xing,  VanGenuchten and Seki. The results indicate that in all models, the parameter value increases with the use of zeolite and increase the level of use. Water storage capacity also increases with the use of zeolite.  Other results showed that the best model for estimating the moisture curve of laryngeal and sandy soils of the Darren model is weakest and the weakest models in the lush soils of the broccoli model and Kasughi model and in the sandy soil of the Brooksouli model Blindness and model-gnuchten Shand.

Abstract

Morning glory spillway is one of the spillways that used to passing of flood from high to low level. This spillway is used in the reservoir dams that are placed in narrow valleys and in many locations with high slope in reservoir walls. In the Morning glory spillways, the vortex flow can reduce discharge, discharge coefficient and the performance of spillway. The zigzag spillway, as another type, is introduced as a proper option for compensating the problem of passing maximum possible flow rate, usually encountered by spillways. In the present study, the experimental results of a physical model were used to develop a hydraulic design with squire and circle inlet and analysis method for Labyrinth Morning Glory Spillway. The analysis of experimental data in circle and square inlet showed, that increase in length of spillway and zigzag, causes decrease in the discharge coefficient. Finally the result of effect spillway inlet on flow rate demonstrate that discharge coefficient in square inlet is more than circle, whereas without vortex breaker.

Abstract

Creation and conservation of urban parks is challenging in arid environments where daily thermal extremes, water scarcity, air pollution and shortage of natural green spaces are more conspicuous. Water scarcity in the arid regions of Iran is major challenge for water managers. Accurate estimation of urban landscape evapotranspiration is therefore critically important for cities located in naturally dry environments, to appropriately manage irrigation practices. This study investigated two factor-based approaches, Water Use Classifications of Landscape Species (WUCOLS) and Landscape Irrigation Management Program (LIMP), to measure the water demand in a botanic garden. The irrigation water volume applied was compared with the gross water demand for the period from 2011 to 2013. On average, WUCOLS estimated an average annual irrigation need of 1164 mm which is 15% less than the applied value of 1366 mm while the LIMP estimate of 1239 mm was 9% less than the applied value. Comparison of estimated and applied irrigation showed that a water saving of 9% can be made by the LIMP method. The outcomes of this research stressed the need to modify the irrigation requirements based on effective rainfall throughout the year, rather relying on long-term average data.

Abstract

Seepage losses and poor operational activities are the two main source of water losses throughout the agricultural water conveyance and distribution systems in irrigation districts. This study aims to investigate the performances of two strategies of “canal lining” and employing the “Canal Automation” in order to reduce the losses mentioned above. The investigation was carried out on a couple of main canal reaches of Moghan Irrigation Districts. Two numerical models were simulated by Seep/w software to compare the seepage rate between the canal with and without concrete lining. The results reveal that the ability of concrete lining to reduce seepage losses along the canal is about 10%. Performance assessment of the “Canal Automation” strategy to minimize operational losses within the main canal was carried out employing Model Predictive Control (MPC). The results of the latter strategy indicate that employing the MPC not only reduces the operational losses along the canal by 15% but also improves the operation of the main canal so that the minimum efficiency and adequacy performance indicator was obtained 100% and 83% respectively. Therefore; due to Executive considerations and financial constraints in the same cases, the potential of each of the two strategies can be considered to reduce the conveyance and distribution losses and ultimately choose the most suitable option.

Abstract

Sloping farmlands are the major sources of soil, water and nutrient losses in arid and semi-arid regions. Information about the impacts of different tillage practices on soil erosion, nutrient loss and crop nutrient uptake on the sloping farmland of semi- arid soil is, however, limited. This study was carried out to investigate the effects of tillage direction on soil, water, nitrogen and phosphorous losses and their uptake by plant in a rainfed wheat land. Field experiments were conducted in two tillage directions: downslope tillage and contour line tillage with four fertilization treatments: control, urea, triple superphosphate, and urea + triple superphosphate at the field plots with 1.75 m ´ 8 m in dimensions by using the randomized completely block design at three replications in Zanjan Township during 2014-2015. According to the results, Significant differences were found between the two tillage practices in soil loss (P < 0.001), water loss (P < 0.001), nitrogen loss soil loss (P < 0.001), and nitrogen uptake by wheat grain (P < 0.001), while phosphorous loss and its uptake did not show any statistically significant difference. Soil and water loss in the downslope tilled plots was 1.65 and 2.50 times higher than the contour line tillage, respectively. Nitrogen loss in the downslope tilled plots was 1.29 times more than that in the contour line tilled plots. Nitrogen loss in the plots was attributed to soil and water loss, so significant relationships were observed between nitrogen loss and soil loss (R2 = 0.59)
and water loss (R2 = 0.55). This study, therefore, revealed that the tillage direction is an important factor controlling runoff, soil loss, and nitrogen loss and its uptake by wheat in the rainfed lands of semi-arid regions. Application of the contour tillage is, therefore, the first step to conserve soil and water and to improve soil productivity in these regions.

Abstract

In this study, to evaluate the rain- fed land capability in the west of Gavkhooni basin and Plasjn sub- basin, a multi- criteria evaluation method was used. First, by reviewing the literature and expert knowledge, proper data were determined. Criteria and constraint were standardized by Fuzzy and Boolean methods repeatedly and the criteria weights were determined using the analytic hierarchy process. Calculated weights showed that soil and climate criteria with 0.27 and 0.26 had the highest weights among other criteria. Criteria and constraints were combined by considering criteria weights and using the weighted linear combination method; then the rain- fed land capability model was prepared. By re- classing the prepared model, the rain- fed land capability map was produced in 6 capability classes. The results showed that 178430 hectares of the study area was related to very high and high rain- fed capability classes. To determine the rain-fed agriculture sustainability, rain- fed agriculture locations were determined in each land rain- fed capability map. The results showed that 19686 hectares of rain- fed areas were located in high and very high capability and 5999 hectares were the in lower classes.

Abstract

Groundwater supplies a major portion of two basic human needs: drinking and agricultural water. Forecasting, monitoring, evaluating the performance and planning of this vital resource require modelling. The lag time of the groundwater level fluctuations against the rainfall is one of the essential data of the models. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the piezometers behaviour by using the Pearson cross-correlation method between SPI and GRI indices in the Shiraz alluvial plain in order to determine the mentioned lag time. The results showed a similar behaviour for 86.2% of the piezometers. In 79.3% of the piezometers, groundwater level was declined one month after the rainfall event. The best correlation coefficient between the aforementioned indices was observed along the southwestern to the northeastern axis of the plain. The northern alluvial plain has a better correlation, as compared to the southern section because of the northern-southern slope of the plain. The central area of the plain had the highest correlation coefficient. The maximum correlation coefficients occurred at a time scale of 48 months. Also, since 2004, due to the decline in the atmospheric precipitation in the Shiraz plain, the SPI index has surpassed the drought level, although the trend has not been significant. However, the GRI does not follow this trend, showing a significant hydrological drought. The reason can be the disproportionate water extraction to recharge ratio in the alluvial aquifer of the plain.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the relative contribution of sub-basin resources to sediment production by using magnetic susceptibility data as the tracer in Chehelgazi catchment, Sanandaj. For this purpose, 20 samples of the output 5 sub-basins were measured by harvesting and magnetic susceptibility. Kruskal-Wallis test results showed that in all three trackings, frequency high, low and dependent, at least two sources had the ability to differentiate. In the second step, the three tracers were tested on the discriminant analysis by the sub-basin source and two tracers with different power splitters showed the high frequency of 88% and the frequency dependence of 12%; power splitters both tracers together in the sub-basin splitters was 90%, so they were selected as the optimal combination; therefore, they have the capability to determine the relative contribution model of sediment. The results of Bayesian uncertainty model also indicated Todarsamadi sub-basin with 44.4% of the largest contribution and Doveyseh, Chatan and Cherendo sub-basins with 35.5, 7.9 and 4.5, respectively, and Madian Dol sub-basin with 4/4 percent had the lowest contribution to sediment production. Based on the available results, Todarsamadi and Doveyseh sub-basins had the highest amount of sediment production; so these results could be used in soil conservation and management planning.
