Abstract
In order to increase ketocarotenoid astaxanthin production by Haematococcus pluvialis, the effects of salinity, phosphate deprivation and eosin on growth and astaxanhin production were examined. The experiments were carried out in the growth chamber at 20oC under sterile conditions. The results showed that under salinity, phosphate deprivation and eosin supply, encystment was induced, and at the same time, astaxanthin formation and dry weight increased. Furthermore, by adding histidine to culture medium as a quencher of singlet oxygen, astaxanthin production significantly reduced. Therefore, it can be claimed that accumulation of astaxanthin may be related to antioxidative responses, which increased survival of algal cells under environmental stress conditions.

Abstract
Of the many hydraulic structures developed by man, the weir is perhaps the oldest. Weirs are used for the measurement of discharge and regulation of water flow. The most common types of weirs are broad-crested, sharp-crested, circular-crested and cylindrical, and ogee crest weirs. Advantage of the circular-crested and cylindrical weir compared to the other weirs include simplicity of design, stable overflow pattern, larger coefficient of discharge and the associated lower costs. In the present study, potential flow around a circular cylinder are adapted to determine the velocity distribution at the crest section and to develop a model for coefficient of discharge (Cd) for circular-crested weirs. These results were evaluated using present test data for three types of weir models, namely, cylindrical, semicylindrical and semicylindrical with different heights and also Dressler theory. The results of the study showed that the experimental velocity profile agree very well with the theoretical profiles for the range of the study. Also, the prediction of the velocity distribution over the weir crest using Dressler theory is always less than the proposed model and measured data. The predicted values of coefficient of discharge (Cd) based on the proposed model agree well with Cd determined from direct discharge measurements. For the cylindrical model, the coefficient of discharge can be predicted from the proposed model within an error of –7% and for the semicylindrical and semicylindrical with different heights within ± 5%.

Abstract
Soil organic matter and clay minerals adsorb and immobilize extracellular enzymes of microorganisms and increase soil enzymes stability. This study aims to clarify the relative importance of soil organic matter and clay minerals on the cellulolytic activities of soils. Fluca prepared cellulase was immobilized on some agricultural residues and clay minerals, avicel and a sample of soil. Immobilized exoglucanase and endoglucanase were assayed at different times. Activities of the immobilized enzymes were strikingly dependent on the kind of sorbent. After 20 days of storing in refrigerator at 4oC, the deactivation of immobilized enzymes on the organic substances (as avicel) was very low but deactivation of immobilized enzymes on the soil and clay minerals was relatively high. On the other hand, the activities of immobilized enzymes on the agricultural residues and avicel were significantly higher than the soil and clay minerals. So it may be concluded that a large part of cellulolytic activity of soil is related to immobilized enzymes on agricultural residues. Coating of the clay minerals, soil and avicel with 4 mmol of Al (OH) x per mg of them significantly increased their immobilization capacity and activities of immobilized enzymes. Activities of immobilized exoglucanase and endoglucanase on the Ca- homoionized soil and clay minerals were significantly higher than the K- homoionized soil and clay minerals. However, these effects may be related to the specific effects of cations on the method of enzyme assay or enzymes activities. These homoionizing-cations effects on the activity of immobilized enzymes on avicel were not significant.

Abstract
This study utilized a descriptive-correlational surveying approach to examine some economic factors involved in the adoption of an integrated campaign to control rice stem borer (Chilo suppressalis) in Isfahan Province. The population consisted of farmers living in the vilages where Biological Control Plan was conducted (N=6000). The population frame was obtained from Isfahan Agricultural Organization. The sample was obtained using the cluster random sampling method (n=361). Questionnaire and interview were used for data collection in this study. Face and content validity of the instrument was established using a panel of experts consisting of senior faculty members in agricultural extension and education at Tarbiat Modaress University. Further, the agricultural officer of Isfahan Province validated the questionnaire. A reliability analysis was conducted and Cronbach alpha value was reported to be 83 percent. The results showed that the rate of adoption of Integrated Campaign to Control Rice Stem Borer among the farmers was moderate. Among the economic characteristics, there was a significant relationship between adoption of integrated campaign and area of land, amount of area under cultivation, degree of family cooperation in the agricultural activities, access to agricultural inputs, access to financial resources, and yield of rice per hectare.

Abstract
‘Golden Delicious’ apples were vacuum infiltrated (250 mm Hg) with 0, 4, and 6% solutions of CaCl2 followed by heat treatment for 0, 48 and 72 hours at 38oC. Treated fruits were stored at 0oC with RH of 85-90% for 2.5 and 5 months, followed by one week of storage at 20C. The results showed that fruits treated with 4 and 6% of CaCl2 significantly increased calcium content of fruits after 2.5 and 5 months of storage at 0oC. With increasing calcium content, fruit firmness also increased. There was a positive relationship between fruit firmness and calcium content and regression coefficients after 2.5 and 5 months of storage at 0oC were 0.77 and 0.83, respectively. Heat treatment for 48 and 72 hours at 38oC significantly increased fruit firmness. Calcium chloride at 4 and 6%, plus heat treatment, significantly increased fruit firmness of those fruits held for one week at 20oC after removal from cold storage. In the second experiment, vacuum infiltrated fruits with 4 and 6% solutions of CaCl2 plus potassium permanganate (0, 10, and 20 g/bag) had no significant effect on fruit firmness, but potassium permanganate alone significantly increased fruit firmness.

Abstract
Cultivating rangeland to be shifted to crop land farms commonly causes soil degradation and runoff generation. This study was conducted to evaluate the cultivation effects on runoff generation and soil quality. The experiment was performed in a rangeland and a 40-year cultivated land located at two slope positions (back slope and shoulder) of a hillside in Dorahan, Chaharmahal & Bakhtiari Province. A 60±5 mm.hr-1 rainfall intensity was simulated by a rainulator. Organic matter, mean weighted diameter, saturated hydraulic conductivity, collected runoff and sediments were measured. The differences between the means were tested using T-test. Results showed 35, 53 and 8% increases in the organic matter, mean weighted diameter, and saturated hydraulic conductivity in back slope, respectively. The increases in these parameters in shoulder position were 39, 60 and 33%. The values for runoff and sediments in back slope were 3 and 8 times greater than in other similar positions while the values in the shoulder position were 11 and 55 times greater than the same values in other positions.

Abstract
Fecundity of Shah-Koolee in the Sefidrood river, which is one of the economic and popular fishes in northern part of Iran, was studied. From April to August 2000, 539 Shah-Koolee fishes were caught at the specific station in the Sefidrood river from the sea shore to Kisum. Seventy one samples of unspawned fishes were taken, the primary biometry was performed, specimens of the different parts of the ovary were prepared and absolute fecundity was determined through gravimetry. Maximum and minimum fecundity rates were 18860 and 2929 eggs, respectively, that related to eight- and three- years old fishes. Relative fecundity was 132±37 and 72 eggs per gram of weight. The relationship between absolute fecundity and length and weight was linear, correlation and numerical quantities of a, b and r were calculated and regression graph was drawn. Gonado Somatic Index (G.S.I.) was used to determine the natural spawning region and calssification was done on the basis of two factors, age and station. It was found that three- years old fishes with a regeneration power of 17.05 in comparison with other age groups had higher potential. This index also showed that Astaneh and Kisum stations were favorable places for natural spawning of these fishes.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the income distribution among the farmers of two districts of lowland and upland of Savojbolagh township of Tehran Province, Iran. The data of this study were collected by filling out questionnaires through interviews with 350 farmers who were selected by stratified random sampling. For analysis, such techniques as Gini Ratio, comparing the quintiles, and comparing means of different variables were used.
The results showed that the income inequalities in the upland district were larger than in lowland. Income mean in the fifth quintile relative to other quintiles was considerably large and this fact was more serious in upland. As in income distribution, similar inequalities were observed in land distribution. The source of income of the farmers included income from agricultural activities (crops, livestock and fruit production) and from nonagricultural activities (second jobs and other incomes). Inequalities in total income in lowland and upland were mainly generated from agricultural sources of income while non-agricultural sources were less important. Inequalities in income from agricultural sources in lowland were related to livestock, fruits, and crops, and in upland to livestock, crops and fruits, respectively.

Abstract
A symbiotic relationship exists between the endophytic fungi of the genus Neotyphodium and many cool-season grasses. Endophytes can alter the growth as well as morphological and physiological characteristics of the host plant, thereby influencing the persistence and survival rate of infected plants. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of endophyte on phenotypic characteristics of Iranian tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) and meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis Huds.). The experiment was set up as a completely randomized design with three replications in a factorial arrangement. The first factor was the two plant accessions and the secondary factor was the endophyte-infected and noninfected plants. The results showed that most of phenotypic characteristics significantly altered as a result of endophyte infection in both tall fescue and meadow fescue plants. Results of analysis of variance showed that the influence of endophyte fungus was positive and significant on tiller number, herbage yield, dry crown weight, dry root weight per plant, and crown depth. Also between plant accessions, there were significant differences for dry herbage yield, crown weight, dry root weight per plant, crown depth, and dry matter percentage. Plant by endophyte interaction was highly significant for crown depth and dry root weight per plant. Therefore, eudophytic fungi can be used to improve phenotypic characteristics in these plants.

Abstract
Experiments were carried out in order to micropropagate sugarcane cultivars through shoot tip and auxilliary bud culture. Rinsing of four cultivars of sugarcane, namely CP-48-103, CP-57-614, CP-69-1062, and NCO-310 in 75% alcohol for 60 seconds and their subsequent disinfection with sodium and calcium hypochloride (1.5% active material) for 15 minutes decreased a significant amount of infection of explants in the medium. The use of the Murashing and Skoog (MS) solid and liquid medium with 1 mg/l Indole Butyric Acid (IBA), 1 mg/l Kinetin, 100 mg/l mio-inositol, 1 mg/l Thiamin HCl, and 2% sucrose had significant superiority (P<0.05) to 1/2 MS solid medium. Also, to increase the multiplication in a sterile medium (In vitro), two kinds of solid and liquid MS medium, with a hormone combination of 1 mg/l IBA, 2 mg/l Kinetin and 1 mg/l 6-(benzylamino)-9-(2-tetrahydropyranyl)-9H-purine (BAP) were applied which yielded the highest amount of proliferation. The plants formed roots in Schenk and Hildebrandt (SH) medium with a hormone combination of 5 mg/l IBA and 1 mg/l Kinetin. When activate charcoal was used in the medium, a higher percentage of the plants became rooted and a larger number of adventitious roots were produced than in the dark-light or light treatments.

Abstract
OF2 and VAP genes, probably involved in signal transduction of sugarbeet nematode resistance, have already been cloned in bacterial vector by AFLP molecular marker and a two-hybrid system, respectively. To examine their capability to introduce resistance in sugarbeet, the genes were transferred to plant expression vectors. For this reason, OF2 gene after isolation was inserted within T-DNA of pAM194 binary vector, downstream of CaMV35S constitutive promoter and also inserted within T-DNA of modified pBin121 binary vector, downstream of HS1pro-1 gene inducing promoter (responsible for nematode resistance). VAP gene after isolation was inserted within T-DNA of pAM194 plasmid, downstream of CaMV35S constitutive promoter. Thus, three new constructs were made in which genes of signal transduction pathway were expressed to give beet cyst nematode resistance. These plasmids were separately transferred to Agrobacterium rhizogenes, strain AR15834. In the next step, petiole explants of sugarbeet were inoculated with the bacterial cells. Transformation-derived hairy roots were analyzed by GUS staining and/or PCR and were then inoculated with nematode larvae. Primary results showed partial resistance against nematode larvae in some hairy roots. As a result, this resistance can be related to OF2 and VAP genes effect.

Abstract
In order to increase the role of machine vision in agricultural research in Iran, especially for measuring physical attributes of seeds, a machine vision system was developed using a computer, a capture card, a video camera and a light box. All equipment was purchased from domestic markets. Computer programs were developed for hardware setup and for image processing applications. The programs perfomed tasks such as image acquisition and display, color conversion, image segmentation, object counting, and measurement of some physical attributes of the objects by analysing their images. The system was used to measure some physical attributes of pistachio nuts. The machine vision measurements were statistically compared with the measurements obtained by the conventional manual methods.
The results indicated that there was generally no significant difference between the two methods. However, the time consumed by the machine vision method was far less than the time taken by manual methods. The experimental results also showed that there were many sources of error and limiting factors in using machine vision for measuring physical attributes of seeds.

Abstract
Germination of strawberry seeds from self- and cross pollination of 4 commercial cultivars were evaluated under mist and in vitro cultures. The study was conducted in McGill University in Quebec, Canada, during 1994 and 1995. Self-pollination of Chambly and Redcoat cvs., and cross pollination of Oka × Chambly as well as Redcoat × Veestar and their reciprocals were used. At maturity, fruits were harvested and their seeds were separated. A sample of each seed lot was grown in greenhouse under mist condition and in vitro using MS medium. In the latter, both intact and cut seeds were used. Germination index (containing germination velocity and rate) was used as a criterion for germination evaluation. The results showed that there was no sign of germination in intact seeds 40 days after cultivation on MS medium however, cut seeds containing plantlets started germination 2 days after cultivation and obtained 90 percent of the germination after one week of culturing on the medium. Germination of seeds under mist condition began 15 days after sowing and showed a minimum of 55 to 87 percent in different genotypes till the end of the experiment period (60 days). Germination index (GI) under this condition ranged from 15.4 to 26.1. GI comparison of seeds under in vitro and mist conditions indicates a lower germination rate in different genotypes under mist condition. This study also showed that the rate of germination in strawberry seeds could range from 0 to 100 percent depending on genotype and type of treatment used. The best treatment for a synchronized and rapid germination was found to be using cut seeds containing the plantlets on MS medium.

Abstract
In this study, the effects of quality and quantity of protein in flours with 95% and 70% extraction rates obtained from Mahdavi and Tajan wheat cultivars each baked at two different durations (100 and 75 sec.) and temperatures (210 and 250°C), after wrapping in polyethylene packages with 40µm thickness were investigated. All tests were carried out during 168 hours after packing and at 24h intervals.
Results indicated that bread staling was affected by wheat cultivar, flour extraction rate, and storage time. Bread prepared from Tajan flour had lower firmness and staleness than that prepared from Mahdavi. High bran content bread was firmer than that with lower bran content. Organoleptic tests indicated that bread baked with 95% flour and bread baked at high temperatures with short durations were not very acceptable.

Abstract
The effects of 4 different levels of nitrogen (0,120,150, and 180 kg nitrogen per hectare) and one level of poultry manure (10 tons per hectare) on the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of an autumn grown cultivar of cucumber [Cucumis sativus, cv.'super dominos] were studied in DarrehShahr, Ilam. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized block design with 3 replications.
The results showed that treatments affected yield, number of nods and plant fresh weight and the highest yield was 41/287 ton/ha in the plots receiving poultry manure. Also 180 kg of pure nitrogen increased yield compared to control. Effect of treatments on fruit length, diameter, and fruit dry matter was different. Plant length, number of nodes, and plant fresh weight showed a positive and significant correlation with plant yield.

Abstract
A great number of studies have been conducted on the role of Azotobacter - a free living N2-fixer - in agricultural soils, but our information is lacking on the importance of Azotobacter in pasture soils. This research was conducted to study the relationship between ecological and edaphical factors with the population of the bacteria in soil. Soil samples were taken from two sites in Azarbaidjan (Mishou-dagh and Khadjeh), having different ecology, soils and vegetation types. We investigated also the effect of inoculation of rhizosphere with soil-isolated A. chroococcum on the growth of wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Omid) during 56 days of growth in a pot experiment. The treatments included: 1) inoculation with A. chroococcum (+A), 2) N fertilizer at a rate of 35 mg/Kg as (NH4)2SO4 (+N), 3) +A+N and 4) –A–N as control with four replications. Results showed that the population of Azotobacter chroococcum correlated positively with organic carbon and negatively with soil pH. In soils covered with vegetation the population of bacteria was higher than that in uncovered soils and the highest population of bacteria was found in soil samples collected from the rhizosphere of grass species and the lowest in that of legume species. In inoculation experiment, shoot and, particularly root growth, increased in the order of +N, +A and +A+N in comparison with control (–A–N) plants. These treatments also stimulate uptake and transport of K into shoot. Interestingly, the effect of +A treatment was significantly higher than that of +N and +A+N treatments. The same results were obtained for nitrogen. A higher uptake and particularly transport of K into shoot was attributed to low molecular weight organic molecules produced in inoculated roots and transport K into shoot. Results showed that inoculation with Azotobacter not only enhanced growth and chlorophyll content, but also stimulated uptake and translocation of ions into shoot. The stimulatory impact of inoculation is most likely a general effect that could also be important in micronutrients translocation into shoot.

Abstract
In a completely randomized design with a factorial arrangement (3× 5× 3), three fistulated sheep with an average body weight of 47.5 ± 2.5 kg were used to determine the effect of cutting and growing stages (no bloom , early bloom and full bloom) on chemical composition and In situ degradability of alfalfa (Medicago sativa). Nylon bags (50 µm pore size) were filled with 3.5 g of each sample and suspended in the rumen before morning feeding and incubated for seven different times (0, 2, 4, 8, 16, 24 and 48 h). The results showed that alfalfa at no bloom stage had the highest crude protein and the lowest crude fiber content. The third – cut alfalfa had the highest degradability of dry matter and organic matter. Extent of degradability depended on crude fiber and solubility. During growth stage, the protein, soluble material and degradability levels decreased while crude fiber, neutral detergent insoluble crude protein (NDICP), and acid detergent insoluble crude protein (ADICP) increased. The amount of ADICP was an estimate of unavailable crude protein in the rumen. Although the rate of organic matter degradation was maximum in full bloom, no significant difference was observed between the three stages of growth. Effective degradability (ED) of crude protein was significantly different among stages the growth (p<0.05). Effective dry matter degradability (EDDM) with a passage rate of 6%/h was significantly higher in the third cutting of alfalfa. The results of this study showed that first cutting and full bloom alfalfa had the lowest and fifth cutting and no bloom had the highest CP levels. The effect of cutting and growing stages on degradability parameters was variable and did not allow any firm conclusions to be made.

Abstract
The effects of growth of two strains of lactic acid bacteria on microbial flora of ground beef after packaging in air permeable packs were studied under workshop conditions. The strains isolated from dairy products were added to ground beef at a density of 104 CFU/g after identification and antibiosis test against indicator bacteria (Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus). The two strains were Lactobacillus casei subsp. casei 102, and Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis var. diacetylactis 202. Inoculated and control samples were stored for up to five days under aerobic conditions in cold storage facilities with a temperature fluctuation between of –1°C to 5°C). Enumeration of different bacterial groups (total aerobic microorganisms, lactic acid bacteria, Pseudomonas spp., coliforms, Staphylococcus aureus, fungi) and detection of Escherichia coli were carried-out during storage period. The number of lactic acid bacteria in samples inoculated with lactobacillus casei subsp. casei 102 (treatment 1) increased during storage period, whereas total number of aerobic microorganisms, Pseudomonas spp., coliforms, and yeasts reduced. In samples inoculated with Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis var. diacetylactis 202 (treatment 2), the number of yeasts decreased considerablely. As a result, Lactobacillus casei subsp. casei 102 can be used as a suitable antagonist of spoilage and pathogenic bacteria in ground beef under aerobic Conditions in cold storage facilities with a temperature variation between –1°C to 5°C.

Abstract
The inhibitory effects of thyme and ajowan oils on growth of A. parasiticus on pear during cold storage were studied. The main components of the two essential oils are phenolic compounds such as thymol and carvacrol with antimicrobial properties. Pear samples were inoculated by suspension ( 106 spor/ml) of A. parasitcus spores and sprayed by thyme (200 p.p.m) and ajowan (300p.p.m) separately and kept in cold storage (0 ±10C and relative humidity of 85%). Organoleptic test for evaluating oil odor residue was studied after 3 months. The amount of spoilage and contamination of pear fruit in 1st, 2nd, and 3nd month after cold storage was determined and were data the statistically analyzed. The results showed that in spite of the higher thymol content in ajowan oil constituent, which is well known as an antimicrobial agent Stronger than thyme oil, thyme oil at 200 p.p.m was more effective than ajowan oil in controlling and preventing, A.parasiticus growth in pear. It seems this is due to synergistic effects of other phenolic compounds such as carvacrol which does not exist in ajowan oil. The results of organoleptic test showed that the samples treated with ajowan oil have more acceptance than those treated with thyme oil thie applied even to the control sample. According to the results, thyme and ajowan oils are good promising natural antifungal agents without any hazardous effects on human health and can be successfully use as chemical fungicides.

Abstract
To obtain soil-moisture characteristic curve experimentally is time-consuming and usually subject to considerable errors. So, many investigators have tried to predict soil-moisture characteristic curve by different models. One of these models predicts soil moisture characteristic curve based on soil particle size distribution and bulk density. In this model, soil particle size distribution curve is divided into a number of segments, each with a specific particle radius and cumulative particle mass greater than that of the radius. Using these data, soil-moisture characteristic curve was estimated. In this model, a scale factor, α, is used which may be considered as a constant, or obtained by logistic or linear procedures. The average values of α for clay, silty clay, sandy loam, two loam soils, and two silty clay loam soils were 1.159, 1.229, 1.494, 1.391, 1.393, 1.253 and 1.254, respectively. For most conditions, soil particle size distribution curve is not available, but only the percentages of clay, silt, and sand could be obtained using soil textural data, which is not enough to draw a precise soil particle size distribution curve. In this situation, a precise soil particle size distribution curve must be initially developed on the basis of which the soil moisture characteristic curve can be predicted. In this study, using soil textural data of seven different soils, soil moisture characteristic curve of each was estimated. In these estimations, logistic and linear methods were used to obtain the α value. Then, the results were compared with those of measured soil moisture characteristic curve. For estimation of soil particle size distribution curve, two extreme values for soil particle radius, 125 and 999 m, were used. The results indicated that using particle radius of 999 µm is more appropriate. On the other hand, it was found that for clay, silty clay, and sitly clay loam texture, it is more appropriate to employ a linear equation to determine for estimating soil-moisture characteristic curve while the logistic equation can be more appropriately used for loam and sand loam textures.
