Abstract

This experiment was conducted to estimate genetic parameters of some of the important traits of silkworm in two populations, namely, Japanese and Chinese lines in Iranian Silkworm Rearing Co-Natanz. Based on single pair mating method, 9 male moths mated with 9 female moths and then raised under standard environmental conditions. Performance of 30 progenies of each pair was recorded.

Heritability coefficients (parental full-sib method) of single cocoon weight (CW), shell weight (SW), pupal weight (PW) and shell ratio (SR) were estimated to be 0.209±0.123, 0.228±0.129, 0.174±0.109 and 0.044±0.042 in the Japanese race and 0.196±0.1l8, 0.234±0.132, 0.159±0.103 and 0.00, in the Chinese race, respectively. Genetic and phenotypic correlation between CW & SW were 0.645 & 0.957, CW & PW, 0.962 & 0.982, CW & SR -0.351 & 0.123, SW & PW, 0.496 & 0.871, SW & SR, 0.265 & 0.457, PW & SR, -0.446 & 0.169, respectively. Selection, based on heritability coefficients of single cocoon weight and shell weight, can be applied successfully to genetic-gain in this trait. Based on correlation coefficients between traits, selection for shell weight can be applied successfully to improve other traits such as single cocoon weight and shell ratio.

Abstract

In winter 1997 severely infested pistachio nuts were collected from orchards in Borkhar district of Isfahan to determine minimum threshold temperature and thermal constants. Minimum threshold temperatures were calculated according to rate of development or X-intercept method and the least coefficient of variation method. Thermal constants were calculated for different developmental stages in the laboratory and were initially compared to field information available.

Results showed that minimum threshold temperatures for covered larvae in nut to 50% pupation, bare larvae to 50% pupation and larvae within nut and 50% pupation to 50% adult emergence according to X-intercept method were 7.69°C, 7.78°C, 9.52°C and 11.14°C, respectively. In the case of least coefficient of variation method, the values were 7.92°C, 7.59°C, 9.81°C and 11.99°C. Thermal constant for occurrence of 50% adult emergence and 50% pupation from overwintering larvae and from 50% pupation to 50% adult emergence and 5% adult emergence to 50% adult emergence with minimum threshold temperatures of 9.5°C, 8°C, 11°C and 11°C under laboratory conditions were 783±17.03, 609±1.7, 215.3±19.05 and 107, respectively, which, except for the last case, they were far different from the thermal constant under field conditions. With regards to the nature of the available data for field conditions, possible reasons have been suggested for these differences.

Abstract

Tillage system effect, Conventional (CT) vs. No-Till (NT), on soil physical properties and Br transport was studied at two locations in North Carolina. The soil types were a Typic Paleudults at Coastal Plain (site 1) and a Typic Kanhapludults at Piedmont (site 2). Bulk density (BD), total porosity (TP), macroporosity (MP), and saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks) .were measured in plant row (R), and trafficked (T) and untrafficked (N) interrows. A rainfall simulator was used to apply two early season rainfalls to 1 m2 plots where KBr suspension was surface applied for Br leaching study. The first simulated rainfall event (30 min) consisted of a low (1.27 cm h-1) or a high (5.08 cm h-1) rate applied, 24 h after Br application. One week later, the high rainfall rate was repeated on all plots.

 Soil samples were taken two days after applying first and second simulated rainfall (a week between them) and the end of season from different depths for measuring Br concentrations. Soil physical properties were affected by both tillage system and position.

Bulk density was higher in NT versus CT and in T position versus Rand N positions. Total porosity was lower in NT versus CT but MP was significantly higher in NT. Saturated hydraulic conductivity was about 90% lower at T position versus N and R positions. Coefficient of variation was quite large, making it difficult to obtain statistical differences between tillage systems. The surface l0-cm of soil contained the highest Br concentration for depth treatments with treatment differences occurring primarily in 0 to 25 cm depth. In first and second sampling dates, more Br leached under NT versus CT system. However, there was no significant difference between the two tillage systems in Br leaching at the end of the growing Season. In site 1, Br leached more due to the coarse texture and high Ks of the soil.

Abstract

The main sources of cadmium in soil-plant continuum in amounts that might present a hazard are liquid and solid wastes of sewage sludge, farm manures and fertilizers. In the southwest of Iran (Khuzestan Province) over 50,000 ha of land is under sugarcane (Saccarum officinarum) cultivation and more than 80,000 ha will be under sugarcane by the end of the year 2000. In these sugarcane fields, about 400 kg ha-1 diamonium phosphate (DAP) and 400 kg ha-1 urea are applied annually. There is no data available to show the fertilizers impact on soil, water and plant contaminations in Iran with respect to cadmium. The objective of this research was to compare the extractable cadmium of virgin soils with that of soils under sugarcane.

 Four sugarcane growing stations viz. Haft-tapeh, Karoon, Shoeibieh and Ghazali with cultivation histories of 36, 20, 2 and 1 year, respectively, were selected. In each site, along a transect soil samples from 0-30 cm of both furrows and ridges of cultivated soils and of virgin soils were collected. Electrical conductivity (EC), pH, clay and organic carbon contents, CI and Cd of 101 soil samples were measured according to standard methods. Results showed that increasing either EC or CI increased Cd concentration with its maximum in virgin soils and its minimum in furrows.

 Results also indicated a slight decrease in the Cd content of cultivated soils.

Abstract

In order to analyze the genetics of tobacco cultivars’ resistance to blue mould (Peronospora tabacina A.) and to estimate the combining ability of the four resistant and susceptible tobacco cultivars (Bel 61-10, Bergerac C, Samsoun and Trumpf) received from CORESTA, these cultivars were crossed in 1997 in a half-diallel crossing system and in 1998 their parents and their progenies were sowed. Also to estimate gene effects controlling resistance and susceptibility of cultivars and to obtain F2, BC1 and BC2 generations, F1 generation was selfed and backcrossed with their parents. In 1999, the six generations (P1, P2, F1, F2, BC1 and BC2) from six families were evaluated in a complete block design with 3 replications and the resistance of genotypes against Peronospora tabacina were evaluated by the standard method of CORESTA and the parents with their F1 and F2 progenies were analyzed as a 4×4 half-diallel crossing system.

The ANOVA showed significant differences among genotypes concerning resistance to Peronospora tabacina and the generation means analysis indicated fit of families Bel 61-10 x Bergerac C and Bel 61-10 x Trumpf with additive-dominance model. The rest of the families showed non-allelic digenic interactions (epistasis) and were fit to 6-parameter model of Mather and Jinks. Because of moderate to high narrow sense heritability of resistance to Peronospora tabacina (from 34 to 85% for different families), the selection of resistant lines may be successful. The results showed significant GCA of parents for the resistance to Peronospora tabacina. So, the role of additive effects of genes concerning resistance to Peronospora tabacina was recognized and the estimated heritability (in the narrow sense) was from 72% to 75% for this trait.

Abstract

In order to evaluate the relationship between SDS-sedimentation value and breadmaking quality of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), glutenin subunits of different genotypes (foreign and Iranian cultivars) were analyzed by reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC). SDS-sedimentation value was used as an indirect criterion for breadmaking quality.

 Correlation coefficients revealed a closer relationship between low molecular weight (LMW) glutenin subunits and variation in SDS-sedimentation value. Principal component analysis confirmed the presence of association between some of the glutenin subunits and SDS-sedimentation value. Based on the stepwise regression analysis, two LMW and four high molecular weight (HMW) peaks (subunits) were selected which accounted for 70.2 and 18.7% of variability in SDS sedimentation values, respectively. On the basis of the results of the stepwise regression analysis, a discriminant function was developed. The great efficiency of discriminant function in correct classification of completely different genotypes (Iranian landraces and cultivars) showed that the observed relationship between glutenin subunits and SDS-sedimentation value has a genetic basis and the effects of LMW and HMW glutenin subunits on SDS-sedimentation value are additive. Therefore, it seems that this method based on more protein components (rather than only on HMW glutenin subunits) can be used to predict breadmaking quality of wheat against many genetic backgrounds.

Abstract

In order to evaluate the morphological and agronomic characteristics of 19 land races of onions and one foreign cultivar (Yellow Sweet Spanish), an experiment was conducted in 1998 at the Research Farm of the College of Agriculture, Isfahan University of Technology.

 Analysis of variance showed significant differences among genotypes for all of the morphological and agronomic traits. Dry weight and number of days to emergence had the highest and lowest coefficients of genetic variability, respectively. Plant fresh weight, yield of 30 plants and total yield also had high coefficients of variability. Broad sense heritability estimates were high for all of the traits, indicating low environmental affects them. Based on cluster analysis and plot of the first two canonical variables, the genotypes were classified in four groups with different agronomic traits. Canonical discriminant analysis based on nine agronomic traits introduced three canonical variables which justified 99.9 percent of the total variation among characters. Principal component analysis revealed four components while factor analysis showed three factors which explained 87.3 and 95.5 percent of the total variation among characters, respectively. The first and second factors were related to adaptation and assimilate translocation, respectively. Bulb diameter, bulb height and bulb weight in positive directions and sensitivity to Fusarium in negative direction had greater loads in the third factor.

Abstract

Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of dietary energy levels on the performance of Arian broiler chicks. Trial 1 was performed in summer and trial 2 in fall. Both experiments were accomplished in 5×2 factorial designs, involving 5 levels of dietary metabolizable energy and two sexes. Each of the 10 resulting treatments was replicated 4 and 3 times in trials 1 and 2, respectively. The metabolizable energy contents in diets number 1 to 5 were 2800, 2900, 3000, 3100 and 3200 Kcal/kg for starter (0-4 weeks) period and 2900, 3000, 3100, 3200 and 3300 Kcal/kg for grower (4-7 weeks) period, respectively. The ratios of energy to each nutrient were the same for all diets in each stage of the experiments.

In both experiments, body weight gain and feed conversion ratio improved significantly (P<0.01) when diets with higher levels of energy were consumed. Feed intake was affected (P<0.01) by the dietary energy content only in summer (trial 1) resulting from the reduced intake of chicks fed with the lowest energy level. Abdominal fat percentage was decreased (P<0.01) in chicks fed with the lowest energy diet in summer. In both experiments, the cost of the feed per unit of live body weight was reduced (P<0.01) in accordance with the reduction in diet density. As expected, body weight gain, feed conversion ratio, abdominal fat and cost of the feed per unit of live body weight for male chicks were significantly better than the same values for females (P<0.01).

Abstract

In this study 130 honeybee colonies in 4 locations (Damavand, Tehran, Qum and Karaj-Savojbolagh) were sampled to determine the phenotypic correlations among 9 morphological and 3 production traits. The morphological traits were length (FL) and width (FB) of fore wing, cubital index (CI), length of hind leg (HL), length of probosics (LP), slender index (SI), length (WL) and width (WT) of wax mirror, distance between wax mirror (WD), index of wax mirror (IW) and corbicular area (CA). The production traits were honey yield (WH), pollen gathering (WP) and wax: production (WW). Data were subjected to analysis of variance, phenotypic correlations, stepwise regression and path coefficient analysis. Results of phenotypic correlations demonstrated that correlations between FL with FB (0.65), WL (0.361), WT (0.261), HL (0.555) and LP (0.257), WH with WP (0.300), WW with WH (0.560) and CA with WH (0.234) were significant (P≤0.01). FB with WH (r=0.204) was also significant but there was no significant correlation between CA and WP. Results of stepwise regression and path coefficient analysis showed that whereas morphological traits were settled as independent variables, much of the corresponding changes in production traits remain uninterpreted. In spite of the significant correlations among several morphological and production traits, body measurements alone are not suitable criteria to select colonies for high productions of honey, pollen and wax.

Abstract

A suitable instrument capable of inserting mulch into soil is needed to improve soil water holding capacity. The goal of this research is to design and manufacture an instrument with a blade and mechanism that can insert rice mulch into the soil. All the parameters in sub-soiling operation were taken into account, and the technique presented can be recommended as a special method of injecting rice husk. The instrument designed was easy to use on a tractor. Sub-soiling operation and husk injection were carried out satisfactorily using various amounts of husk and at different soil depths. This method was added to the conservation chart presented by Morgan as an integrated technique.

Abstract

In this study, the optimum irrigation depths for corn grain production under different conditions, i.e. maximum grain yield production and maximum benefit under limited land and water conditions, were determined under sprinkler irrigation in Bajgah (15 km. north of Shiraz).

 The results showed that, the optimum depth of irrigation for maximum grain yield production was 77.0 cm. Because of low price of irrigation water and sensitivity of corn crop to water deficit, the optimum depths of water were 76.8 and 73.4 cm under land and water limitations, respectively. Therefore, under limited water conditions, only 4.7 percent of the full irrigation water (maximum corn grain production) can be saved for maximum profits.

Abstract

In the Islamic Republic of Iran, the occurrence of chilling and freezing stresses have frequently caused great damages to crops and horticultural products. In southern Fars Province (south Iran) the cultivation of citrus orchards is popular and the economic losses due to injury from chilling and freezing stresses may exceed billions of Rials annually. The drop of ambient air temperature (above zero) reduces the ordinary metabolism activity of plants and causes chilling stress. If the temperature drops below zero and remains there for a considerable time, intercellular freezing may occur. This process always kills the cells and provokes tissue injury. In the present study, the possibility of predicting daily minimum temperature using the dew point of a previous day measured at 18:30 was examined.

 It was found that the prediction of minimum temperature is possible if the dew points are modified on the basis of the air relative humidity. For the episodes that relative humidity varies from 45% to 55%, minimum temperature at day i+1 was found to be almost equal to the dew point on the previous day (day i). For the periods that relative humidity is above (below) this range, the minimum temperature on day i+1 was observed to be greater (lower) than the estimated dew point on day i.

Abstract

The effects of three kinds of organic matter on the physical characteristics of two soil series (Coarse Loamy, Mesic, Typic, Xerofluvents and Fine Mixed, Calcixerollic, Xerochrepts) were studied along with the measurement of maximum dry bulk density (MDBD) and the corresponding critical moisture content (CMC). Soil samples were taken from a depth of 0-20 cm and the percentage of organic matter and soil texture were determined. Three kinds of organic matters (peat, farmyard manure and filter press apple) were mixed with the soils at four levels (0, 4, 8 and 12% by mass), and were compacted using 10, 20 and 30 proctor hammer blows. The compaction tests on soils were carried out at different moisture contents. The present experiment, using factorial design, was randomly conducted in three replications. The results of this study showed that while the mean MDBD declined significantly (P<0.01) from 1.53 to 1.28 gr.cm-3, the mean CMC increased from 23.32 to 33.28% as the organic matter increased from 0.12%. In all the experiments, CMC decreased with increasing compaction efforts, so that the effect of mixed organic matter and soil in terms of MDBD reduction and CMC increase was decreasing in the order, peat, farmyard manure and filter press apple. The clay loam soil showed lower values of MDBD but higher values of CMC as compared to the sandy loam. The significant interaction effect observed between incorporation of organic matter and soil compaction were meaningful. Finally an equation as to the relationship between MDBD and CMC was proposed for the purpose of mixing the three organic materials with soil.

Abstract

Potassium fixation and release by phillosilicate clay minerals in soils are very important processes influencing the availability of K to plants. This investigation was conducted to determine the potassium fixation capacity and charge characteristics of soil clays of 15 surface soils (0-30 cm) from central and northern Iran. After clay particle separation, both total and tetrahedral cation exchange capacity of soil clays were determined. Tetrahedral CEC was measured after saturation with Li and heating at 300 C to reduce octahedral charge to near zero. Potassium fixation was obtained in both wet (1:10 soil:solution, 16 h on a shaker) and dry conditions (after drying for 24 h at 70°C) using three different levels of added K

The total CEC in soil clays of Isfahan, Char-Mahal and Gilan provinces ranged from 22.1-36.0, 33.0-55.8 and 31.3-47.9 cmol kg-1, respectively. Tetrahedral CEC in soil clays of Isfahan, Char-Mahal and Gilan provinces ranged from 17.9-4504, 26.2-32.5 and 8.3-23.8 cmol kg-1, respectively, which consisted of 81.0-98.4, 58.5-95.8 and 24.7-72.5% of their total charge, respectively. The amount of K fixation increased with drying and the level of k added. Mean potassium fixation in soil clays of Isfahan, Char-Mahal and Gilan ranged from 5.42-9.13, 6.63-14.67 and 8.87-10.36, respectively. Mean potassium fixation by soil clays (except for soil clays of Gilan) best correlated with total CEC. In the soil clays of Isfahan, mean potassium fixation correlated with tetrahedral CEC, whereas no correlation was observed in soil clays from other places. The average amount of potassium fixation in clay fractions was in the order: Gilan clays > Char-Mahal clays > Isfahan clays.

Abstract

The urease enzyme plays an important role in the efficient use of urea fertilizer and some environmental risk assessment. Urease activities in 20 different soil samples of arid to semi-arid regions of Isfahan Province were determined and their correlations with some soil physical, chemical and biological characteristics were studied. Urease activities range from 5.3 to 79.2 µg NH4+ g-1 soil 2hr-1.

Results indicated that soil organic carbon was significantly correlated with urease activity (r=0.899***). None of sand, silt and clay percentages were significantly correlated with urease activity. Total nitrogen was significantly correlated with urease activity (r=0.797***). Electrical conductivity of saturated paste extracts were also negatively correlated (r=-0.499*) but sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), pH, equivalent calcium carbonate and cation exchange capacity failed to be correlated significantly with urease activity. No significant correlations were found between urease activity and total bacteria (on nutrient agar) or total fungi (on potato dextrose agar), but the bacteria that could colonize urea-agar media were significantly correlated with urease activity (r=0.47*). Multiple stepwise regression analysis showed that organic carbon accounted for most of the variation in urease activity.

Abstract

To determine the relationships between yield and its components, and to find the direct and indirect effects of yield-related traits on soybean yield, 240 genotypes were grown in the Research Station, College of Agriculture, Karaj, Iran, in 1997-98 using an augmented design. The study of correlation analysis showed that number of seeds per plant and seed yield per plant had the highest significant correlation coefficient (r=0.92). Other significant correlation coefficients were found between biomass per plant and yield (r=0.86) and between number of pods per plant and yield (r=0.67). Results of stepwise regression analysis revealed that number of seeds per plant, seed weight, and number of seeds per pod were the three major traits affecting seed yield in soybean. However, path analysis showed that only two of the three above-mentioned traits, namely, number of seeds per plant and seed weight, are quite important for soybean selection programs. Stepwise regression analysis was used again, omitting number of seeds per plant, which showed that number of pods per plant, seed weight, plant height and number of days to 90% maturity, are important contributors to yield. Path analysis, this time, revealed that the correlation effects to plant height and number of days to 90% maturity on yield is due to the indirect effects exerted through other traits. It is concluded that three traits, namely, number of seeds per plant, seed weight and number of pods per plant have notable effects on soybean seed yield.

Abstract

In order to investigate the genetic diversity of morphological traits in 121 genotypes of lima, red and pinto beans, and to study the relation between characters, and to get better understanding of factors affecting the interaction between characters by multivariate analysis, an experiment was conducted in 1997 as a simple lattice design at the Research Station of Agricultural College, Isfahan University of Technology.

High variability was observed among genotypes for all characters studied. The phenotypic coefficients of variability were greater than the genotypic ones for all the traits. Among the characters studied seed yield, number of pods per lateral branches and main stem, length of lateral branches and main stem, number of nodes per lateral branches and main stem, 100-seed weight and number of lateral branches had the highest genotypic and phenotypic variability, while days to maturity had the lowest variability. Traits relative to lateral branches were more variable than the same traits in the main stem. Factor analysis for all the genotypes and, separately, for lima, red, pinto, determinate and indeterminate genotypes revealed 4 factors which justified more than 78.4 percent of the total variation. The results of the analysis based on all the genotypes showed that the first factor was mostly correlated to days to maturity, length of main stem and lateral branches, number of nodes per main stem and lateral branches, which was named “vegetative factor”. The second and third factors had the highest correlations with number of pods per main stem and lateral branches, number of seeds per pod in the main stem and branches and 100-seed weight, which were named “yield component factors”. The fourth factor showed the highest correlation with number of lateral branches and was named for this trait. The first and fourth factors were related to vegetative growth characteristics and physiological source. The second and third factors were related to physiological sink. On the basis of stepwise regression analysis, number of pods per lateral branches was the most important component of yield, and number of pods per lateral branches and main stem had the next following ranks. Number of pods per lateral branches and main stem had the highest relationships with yield.

Abstract

Cooperative have always been considered institutions capable of solving major problems in the process of development in different countries. These institutions has evolved along with theories of development from government dependent organization to independent, people centered with the objective of being equal-opportunity systems for all members in order to be responsive to current goals of development. The aim of the present research was to determine the level of success in mechanized companies in Fars Province (12 Mechanized Companies, 24 Rural Cooperatives and 8 Production Cooperatives) in achieving development goals through a survey research.

The findings indicated that production cooperatives were more successful in promoting farmers' income and participation of members in community activities, increasing equity and farmers' work related welfare while mechanized companies had more achievements in flexibility and participation of members in making decisions regarding farming activities and in terms of payment to farmers. In other words, production cooperatives have been more successful in achieving development goals (increasing income, participation, and work related welfare and decreasing inequity). Mechanized companies rank a position in the middle of the success scale, but rural cooperatives had the lowest success level in achieving development goals.

Abstract

Effects of the β-adrenergic agonist metaproterenol were studied daily gain, carcass composition and feed consumption of Varamini female lambs were studied. Thirty lambs were randomly assigned to a randomized complete block design with three groups (treatments) and two blocks (live weight). The ration was similar for all groups (ME: 2.6 MCal/kg, CP: 14.9%) and lambs were fed ad libitum. Metaproterenol was injected subcutaneously at 0 (control), 7 (low dose) and 14 (high dose) µg kg-1 w75. Lambs were weighed at 20-day intervals.

Mean daily weight gain and feed conversion ratio improved significantly by metaproterenol (P<0.05), but feed intake was not affected. Hot carcass weight, carcass weight minus fat-tail, dressing percentage and longissimus muscle characteristics were different among the three groups (P<0.01). Physically separated fat from several depots and fat-tail weight significantly reduced in the metaproterenol groups. Carcass fat content decreased but carcass protein content increased in metaproterenol treated lambs.

Abstract

The quality of Iranian breads has intensively decreased during recent years due to socio-economic factors and poor quality of flour. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of mono- and diglycerides and ascorbic acid as improvers on Iranian bread (Taftoon) quality. Three wheat type flours (Ghods, Mahdavi and Roshan wheat varieties produced in Isfahan region) were used. The effects of ascorbic acid at three levels (20, 40 and 60 ppm flour basis) and esters of mono- and diglycerides at three levels (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 percent) on the dough baking and bread quality were measured. The Taftoon bread was baked in a semi-traditional oven.

 Loaves of bread were scored after baking and also on the first and second days of storage at room temperature. Analysis of variances indicated that ascorbic acid and mono- and diglycerides have significant effects on the improvement of the rheological properties of dough. However, ascorbic acid had higher effects than mono- and diglycerides. The results of the tests showed that dough resistance to mixing and tensile stress increased with addition of the improvers. Both improvers used in this experiment have an anti-stabling effect on bread. However, the ascorbic acid effect is much less than that of mono- and diglyceride. The low concentration of 0.5 percent of mono- and diglyceride and 60 ppm of ascorbic acid with flours of moderate protein contents (10-11%) resulted in good quality Taftoon bread with good organoleptic and tearing qualities after two days.
