Abstract

The present research was intended to alleviate the problems and costs of deep tilling in sugarcane production in Mian-Ab sugarcane farms located in Khuzestan province, Iran. The main objective was to investigate the feasibility of subsoiling operations with bentleg subsoiler (BLS) equipped with shallow tines, a combination expected to increase the critical depth resulting in less power consumption and improved soil physical conditions. Six treatments arranged in a completely randomized block design were used to measure the draft force (except for the bulldozer mounted rippers), disturbed soil cross-sectional area and penetration resistance. The treatments included (1) subsoiling with rippers mounted on bulldozer, (2) BLS without attachment, (3), and (4) BLS equipped with single tine at working depths of ½ and ⅓ of target depth, (5) and (6) BLS equipped with two tines at ½ and ⅓ target depth. The experiment was replicated three times. The results indicated that BLS without attachment had the highest draft requirement as compared with other BLS treatments with shallow tines. In general, tine attachment resulted in less draft mainly due to displacement of critical depth to lower soil zones. Increasing the number and depth of shallow tines resulted in less draft force. The BLS equipped with two tines working at ½ target depth exhibited minimum drawbar power. The inclusion of shallow tines resulted in 21% reduction in drawbar power requirement as compared to BLS without tine attachment. The cross-sectional area of the soil tilled by ripper was minimum. Furthermore, the tilled area was not uniform and subsequent subsoiling operations were needed. The average soil cross-sectional area per unit width was improved by BLS treatments by a factor of 2.3 as compared with that of ripper. The highest cone index was obtained in plots tilled by ripper the BLS reduced this index in a significant manner. The soil worked with subsoiler equipped with tines exhibited the least resistance. The range of wheel slippage for BLS treatments was 12-16% which lies in the upper end of the recommended range for optimum traction efficiency. The proposed idea proved prominent in subsoiling fine textured compact soils.

Abstract

Sugarcane is one of the most important sugar crops in the world. Because of semi-arid climate and salinity of its cultivation area in our country, increasing salt tolerance of sugarcane is signifying. To achieve this goal determining salt tolerant cultivars and understanding salinity mechanisms in sugarcane are very important. This study was conducted to evaluate 8 commercial and promising sugarcane cultivars at early stage of growth. A complete randomized design with three replicates and four salinity treatments (0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 % NaCl) was used in a hydroponics system. The effect of salinity on absorption, transport and accumulation of Na+, Cl- , K+ and Ca2+ ions in shoot and root was determined. At high level salt concentration, Cl- content in shoot and root increased. Result showed that sodium accumulation in sugarcane plants was more than potassium. By increasing salinity level, sodium uptake and its translocation to shoots increased reducing growth and dry matter yield of plants. With rising salt concentration from medium (0.5%) to high (0.75%), content of chloride in shoot and root of NCO-310 was constant showed that this cultivar had genetic ability to avoid Cl- uptake. CP82-1592 with lowest ratio of shoot / root chloride had minimum transport of Cl- to shoots. Also this cultivar had high content of Ca2+ in shoot and low Na+/Ca2+ ratio at all salinity levels. CP48-103 had low sodium in shoot and relatively low sodium in root. Thus it probably has genetic potential to avoid sodium uptake. At last, exclusion of Na+ and Cl- to older leaves and tillers was seen in CP82-1592 and CP72-2086 cultivars. According to results, to avoid once of absorption and transport, and exclusion of harmful Na+ and Cl- ions were mechanisms that could be used in salinity tolerance of sugarcane.

Abstract

In order to reduce the rainfall damages on rice yield at harvest stage, a field experiment was conducted at Rice Research Institute of Iran, Rasht, in 2004 by using Sodium Chlorate as a chemical desiccant. Five seed moisture contents of Dorfak rice cultivar were considered as experimantal treatments [24 - 28% (M1), 22 - 24% (M2), 20 -22% (M3). 18 - 20% (M4) and control (M5= conventional harvesting)]. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design with three replications and the effects of treatments on grain yield, head rice yield, seed germination rate and percentage, kernel breakage, kernel cracking, amylose content, gelatinization temperature and gel consistency were evaluated. Results showed that the whole plant and grain moisture contents were significantly reduced in all experimental treatments compared with control. M2 and M3 both cosiderably reduced the plant moisture content in which harvesting occurred 12 and 8 days respectively sooner than the control. In M1, due to high grain moisture and non - simultaneous grain filling in different tillers, many of panicles desiccated prior to maturity lost their quality. In M4, the crop harvested was only 2 days earlier than the control. Analysis of variance showed that there were no significant effects of treatments on evaluated traits. It seems that rice plant could be reliably desiccated by Sodium Chlorat and harvested earlier without any adverse effects on its quality and quantity.

Abstract

To study the effect of salt stress on quantitative and qualitative parameters of canola (Brassica napuse. L) cultivars, and determine the possible mechanisms of salt tolerance and the best salt tolerance indices, an experiment was conducted under a rain-shelter at experimental field of university of Kerman in 2004. The experimental design was a complete randomized block (RCOD) with four replications. Treatments consisted of all combinations of different levels of three factors including variety (Kobra×Regent, Ceres and Okapi), salt types (NaCl and CaCl2) and electrical conductivity of saline solution (0, 4, 8 and 12 dS/m). All treatments were randomly distributed in each replication. Results of the analysis of variance showed that grain yield, yield components, oil and protein contents were significantly affected by salinity (P< 0.001). All the mentioned traits reduced with increasing salinity. It was also found that there were significant differences among genotypes for the mentioned traits. Cultivar of Kobra×Regent showed the highest values of the above traits except for the oil content. Proline, protein and sugar contents were also affected significantly by salinity (P<0.001). The highest and lowest sugar concentrations and protein contents were recorded for control and 12dS/m treatments, respectively. Proline content showed a reverse response and increased with increasing salinity. Mean productivity (MP), geometric mean productivity (GMP) and stress tolerance index (STI) are suggested to be the most suitable indices in order to select genotypes of high productivity under both stress and normal conditions. Based on these results, Kobra*Regent was selected as the most tolerant cultivar.

Abstract

Cultivars or species of different plants through physical and biochemical characteristics or indirectly through food diet of host plant can influence behavioral characteristics and efficiency of a natural enemy. This investigation was conducted to determine percentage of parasitism and functional response of parasitoid wasp, Platytelenomus hylas (Hym., Scelionidae) to different egg densities of stem borer, Sesamia nonagrioides (Lef.) and effect of different cultivars on it. At the first stage, eggs of pest were separately collected from fields in three cultivars of CP48-103, CP69-1062 and CP57-614 and then percentage of parasitism in each cultivar was calculated. For determining functional response of the wasp, collected eggs from fields were reared to adult stage at 29±1 ºC, 60% of RH,. Then functional response of wasp was investigated at densities of 2, 4, 6, 8, 14, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, and 90 of the host eggs for 24h. Analysis of data was done using SAS software. Results showed that egg parasitism by P. hylas in cultivars were significantly different (p<0.05). Type of cultivars influences rate of egg parasitism. Comparison of means by Duncan’s test showed that CP48-103 cultivar significantly differed from two other cultivars: CP69-1062 and CP57-614. Functional response in three cultivars was found to be a type III. Comparison of estimated parameters by Holling model in three cultivars showed that searching efficiency on CP48-103 cultivar was significantly higher than two other cultivars but CP57-614 and CP69-1062 were close to each other. Also, handling time (Th) and the maximum rate of estimated parasitism (T/ Th) on the three cultivars were different and on CP69-1062 they were significantly less than the two other cultivars.

Abstract

In order to study the effect of various amounts of nitrogen (N) and Iranian natural zeolite on the quantitative and qualitative forage yield of winter canola (Brassica napus L.) in light soil, a field experiment was conducted on research farm of Tarbiat Modares University, Tehran, during 2006-2007. Treatments were arranged in the form of RCBD with 3 replications. The experimental treatments were based on factorial various levels of zeolite (0, 3, 6 and 9 t.ha-1) and nitrogen (90, 180 and 270 kg ha-1) in urea form. Seeds of canola (Brassica napus L. cv. Okapi) were sown on October 2, and fresh forage was harvested at the time of silique formation (170 DAP). Results showed that the effect of N and zeolite on forage quantitative attributes including biomass, leaf and stem dry weight and leaf area index were statistically significant. In addition, forage qualitative traits including crude protein percentage and calcium percentage in plant mass were significantly affected by N and zeolite. Increasing application of N fertilizer caused increase in N leaching, and with increasing zeolite application, N leaching reduced. The interaction of two factors for all parameters was not significant. The most increasing effects on forage yield and quality were gained using 270 kg N ha-1 in combination with 9 t. Zeolite ha-1. More detailed studies are strongly recommended to investigate the effects of integrated application of chemical fertilizer and natural zeolite.

Abstract

Magnetic susceptibility (χ) measurements are widely used for the evaluation of soil profile development. Fourteen soil profiles were studied in a relatively wide range of climatic conditions in Fars Province. Citrate-bicarbonate-dithionite (CBD) extraction and micro CT-Scan images were used to evaluate the source of magnetic susceptibility. The results showed that soil samples lost 23 to 91 percent of their magnetic susceptibility after CBD extraction (χCBD), reflecting differences in the source (pedogenic or lithogenic) of magnetic susceptibility. Greater values of the decrease were noticed mostly in well developed soil profiles as well as in soil surface. 22 to 89% of the decrease was observed in frequency dependence of magnetic susceptibility (χfd) after CBD extraction. A significant positive correlation (P<0.01) was obtained between χCBD and χfd in the soil studied. Micro CT-Scan images with a spatial resolution of 33 µm showed lithogenic magnetic Fe oxide (magnetite) grains.

Abstract

Common kilka were chilled during 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 days to determine the influence of such storage times of fish over the quality of the final canned product. For this propose, common factors for determination of fish quality (moisture, total lipid, free fatty acid, peroxide, thiobarbituric acid and fatty acid profile) were selected and compared with the formation of fluorescence compounds in fish tissue and filling media of canned kilka. In this work common indices showed higher oxidative and hydrolytic rancidity of canned samples compared to raw material but the trend of deterioration with the increase of chilled storage time was not well shown. However, filling media fluorescence compounds was significantly increased with the increase of chilled storage time and the decrease of fish primary quality (P< 0.05). According to the present results, fluorescence detection of interaction compounds can provide a good technique to assess quality differences in the final product as its relates to the quality of the raw material used.

Abstract

This research was carried out taking into consideration the defects of traditional process in and the most important factors affecting production of rock candy. Selected parameters used for effluent and rock candy consisted of supersaturation at 4 levels (1.3, 1.4, 1.5, and 1.6) and temperature at 3 levels (70, 80, 900C) with 3 replications. The physiochemical tests consisted of pH, color and invert sugar percentage done on all the samples. According to the results, the rise in super-saturation and temperature had significant effect on all the effluent and rock candy characteristics (P<0.01) such that color and invert sugar percentage increased and pH decreased as super-saturation and temperature increased. Furthermore, the interaction effect of super-saturation and temperature on pH, color and invert sugar percentage of rock candy was significant (P<0.01).

Abstract

Oil seed rape is an important non-cereal crop used mainly for edible oil production. Canola pods are fragile and its branches are twisted together at harvesting time. Harvesting with a conventional combine can pull off twisted branches and cause appreciable losses in the vicinity of divider at combine header. In this study, a hydraulic rotary divider was designed and developed to separate twisted pods and reduce the grain loss. The device is made up of two cylinders and a number of fingers, the cylinders rotate in opposite direction and fingers move in and out through holes on cylinder walls. The assembly was expected to separate the twisted pods and reduce grain loss. A hydraulic motor driven by combine hydraulic system was used to rotate the separating cylinders. The separating assembly was installed on righthand side of the combine harvester header. A split-plot experiment was used to evaluate the performance of the unit. Field tests were carried out at combine forward speed of 1.5 kmh-1. Variables were: cylinders rotary speed in three levels (50, 75 and 100 rpm), the number of fingers in three levels (16, 12 and 8), and the tests were conducted with and without combine reel. Two different positions of finger protrusion were also considered in field tests. The results were compared with those of a conventional combine header. The results show that the medium rotational speed (75 rpm) exhibited lowest seed loss. Furthermore, as the number of fingers increased, the seed loss tended to decrease. The seed loss also decreased in the presence of combine reel. Also, findings showed there is no significant difference between the two protrusions trajectories of fingers. A twenty percent decrease in seed loss was observed at rotary speed of 75 rpm and number of fingers of 16 in the presence of combine reel.

Abstract

Cantaloupe (Cucumis melo L.) is one of the most important melons in Iran especially in Khorasan province. The cantaloupe seed is a good functional and nutritional source for human, having large amounts of essential amino acids and unsaturated fatty acids. In spite of nutritional and functional aspects, it does not have considerable applications in food industry yet. Cantaloupe seed milk's pH is about 6.8, so cannot be stored for a long time. In this work, pH of cantaloupe seed milk decreases to 4.15 in 3 treatments (citric acid, orange concentrate, and orange sacs) and a constant amount of lemon juice. At first, nutritive value of seed milk was measured. According to results, this milk is a good source of protein (1.52%), phosphorus (41/3 ppm) and potassium (17 ppm). After that, storage stability of cantaloupe seed beverage at refrigerator temperature (4 °C) for 42 days was evaluated by analyzing changes in the chemical, microbial and sensory properties. The results showed that the orange concentrate-cantaloupe seed beverage reached the highest score of total acceptance (3.67 on a 5-point hedonic scale). In these conditions, we couldn’t find any molds and yeasts in the samples, thus the shelf life of the mentioned beverage could be 6 weeks at 4 °C.

Abstract

In this research, samples of sugarcane bagasse were irradiated with various amounts (0, 100, 200 and 300 Kilogray) in an electron accelerator (TT200) to evaluate the effects of electron-beam irradiation on dry matter, neutral-detergent fiber (NDF) and acid-detergent fiber (ADF) degradability parameters. The first samples were dried and then ground for chemical analysis. The ruminal degradation parameters of the samples were measured in fistulated cow 3 (400 kg) at times of 0, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 h by the terylene bag method. Data were fitted to non-linear degradation model of Orskov and McDonald to calculate degradation parameters of DM, NDF and ADF. The statistical analysis of degradation of various parameters and effective degradability was accomplished by using the GLM procedure of SAS. After variance analysis, the means were compared with Duncan,s new multiplerange test by using a completely randomized design. The washout fractions of DM as well as NDF and ADF increased linearly (P<0.05) with increasing electron irradiation dose, whereas the potentially degradable fractions of NDF and ADF decreased at first, and then, increased. Also, the degradation rate of the b fraction of dry matter increased. Effective degradability of DM, NDF and ADF increased linearly (P<0.05) with increasing irradiation dose. Electron irradiation at doses of 100, 200 and 300 kGy increased the effective degradability of DM, NDF and ADF at rumen outflow rate of 0.05/h (r) by about 7, 11 and 16% 2, 5 and 7% 3, 7 and 10%, respectively.

Abstract

In order to study the effects of salt stress and leaf feeding by ascorbic acid on antioxidant enzyme activity, proline accumulation and lipid peroxidation on leaves and roots of Brassica napus L. cvs. Okapi, an experiment was conducted as a factorial in a completely random design with three replications. Plants were exposed to salt stresses by NaCl solution (200 mM) and foliar were treated by ascorbic acid solution (25mM). Catalase, Superoxide dismutase and peroxidase activity were assayed in shoot and root. Also, malondialdehyde content and proline and chlorophyll in leaves were determined. The results showed that the activity of all antioxidant enzymes (except for SOD in roots) were increased significantly in plants under salt stress, and ascorbic acid application, as a antioxidant decreased their activity in leaves, but in roots it was not effective. Total protein content in leaves and roots decreased significantly under salinity condition. Ascorbic acid treatment increased total protein content under salt stress in both roots and shoots. Measurement of malondialdehyde content in leaves and roots showed that lipid peroxidation was increased by active oxygen species due to salt stress, and ascorbic acid reduced lipid peroxidation only in leaves. Chlorophyll content was also decreased by salinity compared to control. According to the result of present study, ascorbic acid application decreases deleterious effect of salinity.

Abstract

Overcroping, shading and short growing season can reduce the pool of carbohydrate reserves, and consequently reduce the quality of crop in grapevines. An experiment was conducted in order to study the effects of cluster number and different levels of cane topping on balanced yield and qualitative traits of table grape (Vitis vinifera L.) cv. Askari. The design of experiment was factorial in completely randomized blocks with four replications. Factors included cluster number (Control, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 and 50 cluster per vine) and cane topping included (Control, removal 1/4, 1/3 and 1/2 length of shoot). Results showed that decreasing the number of cluster to 25-35 per vine, significantly increased %TSS, TSS/TA and pH but with increasing cluster number, these traits were significantly reduced. Thinning treatment to 25 cluster showed significant difference from the viewpoint of %TA compared with untreated control. Also topping treatment significantly increased %TSS, %TA, TSS/TA ratio and decreased % TA compared with untreated control. Reducing the cluster to 25-45 per vine significantly increased cluster weight, however, no significant difference was observed between control and 50 clusters per vine and/or 25 to 50 clusters. Yield per vine was reduced in all treatments in comparison with untreated control. However, no difference was shown between 25 to 35 and or 40 and 50 clusters per vine. According to the results obtained, cluster thinning combined with topping can be recommended for increasing fruit quality and balanced yield of Askari table grapes in cold climate of Cisakht region.

Abstract

Canola (Brassica napus L.) as one of the oilseed crops has recently received lots of attention due to its suitable oil quality and high oil percentage. To evaluate the effect of water deficit stress on canola genotypes with regard to yield, drought tolerance quantitative indices and identify drought tolerant genotypes, an experiment was conducted in research farm of seed and plant improvement Institute (Karaj) using completely randomized block design with four replications, and 25 genotypes under two stress and non stress conditions. Genotypes were evaluated regarding drought tolerance. Drought tolerance quantitative indices include MP, GMP, STI, SSI and TOL. Result of variance analysis showed significant differences among genotypes as regards all indices and seed yield of genotypes in both conditions at 1% probability level. MP, GMP and STI indices were selected as the best indices for selection of tolerant genotypes in regard to analysis of correlation between seed yield in two stress and non stress conditions and drought tolerance indices. Results indicated that Genotype Vectra was the best genotype, because of its proper mean yield in both stress and non stress conditions. Multivariate biplot figure display showed that MP, GMP and STI indices had high correlation coefficient with each other, and tolerant genotypes were located near tolerance indices. Also results of three dimensional scatter plot and cluster analysis indicated that genotypes Modena, Jura, Eshydromel, Vectra, Dante, Zarfam, Esbetty and Olano were tolerant to drought stress, and genotypes Olpop, GKHelena, RG4504 and Olphi were sensitive genotypes.

Abstract

Oil seed rape (Brasica napus) is an important crop, which is cultivated in Iran for oil production. As a management practice deficit irrigation strategy is applied to cope with water shortages, especially during drought periods. This research was conducted to study the effect of water stress on physiological parameter of oil seed rape in the experimental research field of Collage of Agriculture (of shiraz university) during 2004- 2005 and 2005- 2006. Licord cultivar of oil seed rape was planted and experimental design was random block with five treatments and four replications. Treatments were full irrigation in all growth stages, water stress in vegetative stage in early spring, water stress in flowering and podding stages, water stress in grain filling stage and dry land treatment with supplemental irrigation in time of planting. Water stress caused decrease in water potential of plant, an increase in canopy temperature, and decrease in plant height especially in dry land treatment. Leaf area index decreased as water stress increased. The decrease in leaf area index was more severe in vegetative stage water stress treatment. At the end of water stress period leaf area index increased again. Rate of decrease in leaf area index at the end of the growing season was higher in grain filling stage of water stress treatment.

Sugarcane has been cultivated in an extensive area in Khuzestan and irrigated by hydro-flume or siphon and furrow. In a field experiment during 2005-6 at Amir Kabir Agro-Industry, Khuzestan, the effect of every other-furrow irrigation method was studied on sugarcane in regard to irrigation water volume, water use efficiency and quality and quantity of sugarcane. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design with three irrigation treatments, including conventional method (blank), variable every other furrow(alternative furrow) and fixed every other furrow. This experiment was conducted by cv. Cp69-1062 sugarcane. The results showed that water use efficiency rates were 0.41, 0.58 and 0.7 kg/m3 for conventional, fixing furrow and alternative, respectively. However, water use efficiency rates were not significantly different in treatments. It had minimum amount of water use efficiency in every other furrow treatments. Maximum water use efficiency, quality and quantity of sugarcane were obtained every other irrigation. Maximum irrigation water was used in conventional treatment and resulted in minimum irrigation, quality sugarcane and water use efficiency. It produced 14.5 ton/ha sugar for 20604 m3/ha application of irrigation. Sugarcane quality and quantity characteristics in variable treatments, except for length number per hectare, were not significant.

Abstract

Gray mold, caused by Botrytis cinerea, is a serious disease of cut rose flowers (Rosa hybrida L.) in Iran. In order to elucidate the effects of different potassium and calcium levels in nutrient solution on susceptibility of cut rose flowers to gray mold, this experiment was carried out as factorial design in a randomized complete block with four replications at Safi Abad Agricultural Research center in 2008 for one year. In this experiment, rose plants were grown and subjected to three levels of potassium (1.0, 5.0 and 10.0 mM) in combination with two levels of calcium (1.6 and 4.8 mM) under hydroponic condition. Rose flowers from two consecutive harvesting periods were sprayed with the conidial suspension (104 spore/ml) of B. cinerea isolate. At the end of experiment the disease severity was recorded and analyzed. The results indicated that application of 10.0 mM K in the nutrient solution led to increasing rose disease severity to gray mold (30.4 % day-1) compared to 1.0 mM (24.8 % day-1) and 5.0 mM (26.2 % day-1) of K levels (P< 0.01). The increased susceptibility was associated with a decreased concentration of Ca in the rose petals. Correlation analysis revealed that susceptibility of rose flowers to gray mold significantly increased with K to sum cations ratio in the nutrient solution (r = 0.94*). The increase of Ca supply from 1.6 to 4.8 mM resulted in decline of disease severity from 29.6 to 24.6 % day-1 (P< 0.01). Therefore, balanced application of potassium and calcium (5.0 and 4.8 mM, respectively) is recommendable for preventing antagonistic effects between them and reducing of rose gray mold intensity under hydroponic conditions.
