Abstract

The effect of the uplift force in the hydraulics structures is against stability. So, determining and controlling this force can be very important. One of the ways to achieve this purpose is to decrease this force by using the hole drains; in this way, we can build perpendicular pipes with different diameters, leading to the durability of the structure. Therefore, an experimental model of concrete dam was constructed in the hydraulic laboratory. The dam's model was divided into five sections by using 4-hole drains with a thickness equal to the dam's foundation. By running experiments with the maximum water level at the upstream, dam hole drains were opened in their position. Hydraulic potential was estimated by using the Piezometer built in the flume body. Finally, by opening some hole drains, the uplift force was calculated from the equipotential lines. Therefore, the best case (which had the minimum force) was determined, which was a/L=0.4, to create the most proper hole drain in the dam foundation. (a: distance of drain to heel and L: length of the dam's foundation). To place the hole drain in this position, by applying the zero potential in this position, the up lift force was increased

Abstract

Zinc is essential micronutrients for plants. This element improves plant growth and yield and plays a role in the metabolism of carbohydrates. Zinc deficiency in soils and Iranian crops is possible due to numerous reasons such as calcareous soils, excessive use of phosphorus fertilizers and unbalanced fertilizer use. The effect of zinc solubilizing bacteria on some wheat properties was considered as a factorial experiment in greenhouse conditions based on a completely randomized design. Treatments consisted of four levels of bacteria comprising B1 (control), B2 (Bacillus megaterium), B3 (Enterobacter cloacae) and B4 (consortium of both bacterium), and ZnSO4 fertilizer at three levels including Zn0 (control), Zn20 (20 Kg/ha) and Zn40 (40 kg/ha). During the experiment, some parameters such as plant height and chlorophyll index were measured. At the end of the cultivation period, soil available zinc, dry weight of root and aerial part, and the zinc concentration of the root, shoot and grain were determined. Grain yield and zinc uptake in the grain were also calculated. The results indicated soil exchangeable zinc content was increased significantly (P<0.05) in all bacterial treatments, as compared to the control treatment. The maximum amount of soil exchangeable zinc, grain yield, zinc concentration and uptake in grain were observed in the treatment containing bacteria consortium with the application of 40 kg/ha of zinc sulfate fertilizer, which was followed by the treatment containing Enterobacter cloacae with the application of 40 kg/ha of the zinc sulfate fertilizer. The maximum amount of all measured properties in the treatment containing Enterobacter cloacae and Bacillus megaterium indicated the possibility of applying those bacteria for zinc enrichment in wheat, crop optimal production, and the sustainable agriculture.

Abstract

Long-term use of treated wastewaters for irrigation adds compounds and/or ions to soils which might alter the soil physical, hydraulic and mechanical properties. Soil mechanical properties are closely linked with the plant growth. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of short-, mid- and long-term applications of the treated wastewater of Mobarake Steel Company in Isfahan on the soil penetration resistance and shear strength in the company green space. Soil penetration resistance and shear strength were measured using a pocket penetrometer and in situ shear box, respectively. The results showed that soil penetration resistance (i.e. soil hardness) at both dry and wet conditions significantly was increased upon short-, mid- and long-term applications of wastewater; 19 years of the application of wastewater resulted in the highest soil penetration resistance at wet condition, but the well water did not significantly affect it. Surface crust in the non-irrigated locations increased the soil penetration resistance, but the irrigated sealed soils were not significantly different from the virgin soil in terms of dry and wet penetration resistances. For the soil shear strength parameters, wastewater, well water and surface crust did not significantly affect soil cohesion (c), they but significantly affected the angle of internal friction (φ). Overall, soil shear strength parameters were not greatly affected by the irrigation water treatments because of the dominant effect of the soil fractions (texture and gravel content) and the microstructure.

Abstract

Limited information is available on the effect of residues rates and slope direction on dryland wheat
(Triticum aestivum L.) yield.  This study was carried out to determine the effects of residues rates and tillage direction on grain yield and yield components of the Sardary wheat in a dryland region in Zanjan. Five wheat residues rates (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% surface cover) were applied and incorporated into soil in two slope directions (along the slope and on contour lines) using the randomized complete blocks design with three replications in a land with 10% slope steepness. Overall, thirty plots with 2m × 5 m dimensions were installed in the field and wheat grain yield and yield components were determined for growth period from 2015-2016. Results indicated that grain yield and yield components were significantly affected by the residues rates and slope direction and their interaction. In contour tilled plots, wheat grain yield (1.78 to per hectare), thousand grain weight (42.26 kg) and wheat height (55.11 cm) were 5.32, 5.01, 16.19 and 1.36 percent more than the plots tilled along the slope. The highest grain yield was found in 75% of residue (2.45 ton per hectare) under contour line direction which was about 53% bigger than control treatment (0% straw mulch) under along the slope. This study indicated that the application of straw mulch before cultivation and incorporating into soil using contour line tillage are proper soil management methods to obtain higher wheat yield in this dryland region.

Abstract

In this study, the effect of some soil parameters on the life forms and total aboveground net primary production (ANPP) in meadow rangelands in Fandoghlou region of Namin county in Ardabil Province were investigated. ANPP in 180 plots of 12 by harvesting and weighting method were measured. Eighteen soil samples were collected along transects. Some physical and chemical attributes of the soil were measured by standard methods. The relationship between these parameters and ANPP was performed using multivariate regression (enter) method. To determine the effects of important soil parameters on ANPP variation, principal component analysis (PCA) was used. The results of regression analysis showed that electrical conductivity (EC), magnesium (Mg), spreadable clay (WDC), volumetric moisture content (VM), organic carbon (OC), soluble potassium (KS), exchangeable potassium (Kexch), sodium (Na) and phosphorus (P) were the effective parameters on the life forms and total ANPP (p<0.01). The accuracy of obtained equations for grasses, forbs and total ANPP were calculated 79, 76 and 70%, respectively. Moreover, results of PCA showed that soil parameters justify 84.52 percent of total ANPP variation and in comparison, with regression results with 28% it provides better results.

Abstract

In this study, the discharge coefficient of the circular side orifices was predicted using a new hybrid method. Combinations made in this study were divided into two sections: 1) the combination of two algorithms including Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Genetic Algorithm (GA) and providing the PSOGA algorithm 2) using the PSOGA algorithm in order to optimize the Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference Systems (ANFIS) network and providing the ANFIS-PSOGA method. Next, by identifying the parameters affecting on the discharge coefficient of the circular side orifices, 11 different combinations were provided. Then, the sensitivity analysis conducted by ANFIS showed that the Froude number and the ratio of the flow depth to the orifice diameter (Ym/D) were identified as the most effective parameters in modeling the discharge coefficient. Also, the best combination including the Froude number (Fr), the ratio of the main channel width to the side orifice diameter (B/D), the ratio of the orifice crest height to its diameter (W/D) and the ratio of the flow depth to the orifice diameter (Ym/D) for estimating the discharge coefficient was introduced. For this model, the values of Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and correlation coefficient (R) were obtained 0.021, 0.020 and 0.871, respectively. Additionally, the performance of the ANFIS-PSOGA method was compared with the ANFIS-PSO and ANFIS methods. The results showed that the ANFIS-PSOGA method for predicting the discharge coefficient was the superior model

Abstract

Astragalus fasciculifolius is one of the most distributed plant species in the arid and semiarid regions of southern Iran. It may be well grown on roadside. This investigation was carried out to study the effect of road and its traffic intensity on the soil physicochemical properties and plant nutrients availability of roadside and to monitor the concentration of nutrients in the aerial parts of Astragalus fasciculifolius. Thirty soil and plant samples from roadside and 100 m distance from road were randomly collected and some physicochemical soil properties and nutrients availability were determined. Concentrations of the nutrients in the aerial parts of the plants were also determined. The results indicated that roadside soils had more sand and calcium carbonate equivalent than the adjacent lands. Soils of the main roadside had less K and more Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu than the adjacent lands; this difference in local road was observed only for Fe and Cu. Nutrients concentration in the aerial parts of the plants was affected by road, and P, K, Mn and Zn showed significant increases in the roadside plants. Concentrations of P, Fe, Zn and Cu in plants grown in main roadside and concentrations of Fe and Zn in plants grown in the local roadside were correlated with their contents in the soils. The effect of roads on soil properties change and nutrients availability may be related to the addition of road bed and emission of vehicles. Generally, it could be concluded that roadside soils had more suitable water and nutrition conditions for the growth of Astragalus fasciculifolius, as compared to the soils of the adjacent lands.

Abstract

Public health of common waters in protecting the human's health is considered as "human delinquent" and environmental and natural health as "green offender" (silent offender) due to the terrestrial nature and the lack of the monopoly of works; so, the consequences of violating it in the territory of a particular state are of particular importance in the international public law. Therefore, protection of the harm caused by the breach of the public health of common waters is imperative by international institutions and States members of the international community. The supportive policy is a branch of public policy that "puts" various legal protections from the perpetrators of the violations of norms and regulations "in the form of coherent policies using its principal principles. These principles are a set of doctrines and coherent strategies that determine the policy and consequently, the way in which laws and regulations are imposed; as with the qualitative measure, it provides for the monitoring of rules and regulations. To make the present study, a review of the principles that underlie the principles of public health policy in international treaties and procedures is presented. The principles outlined in these sources are categorized into three categories: "justice-oriented", "cooperative-oriented" and "fair-minded". These principles can be used in protecting Iranian water health rights.

Abstract

Earthworms are soil organisms commonly used in environmental studies and biological toxicology. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the role of Eisenia Fetida  earthworms on the bioavailability of zinc and copper in the  contaminated soils. This study was carried out on a contaminated soil sampled from the Ahangaran mine 26 kilometers far from the city of Malair and its surrounding areas. In this experiment, 12 earthworms with  the average weight of 0.3 -0.6  g were selected for each soil sample. The worms were exposed to a  metal contaminated soil for 42 days. After the test time, Zinc (Zn) and Cupper (Cu) concentrations were measured in different fractions of the soil. The results showed that cow manure, carrot pulp and vermicompost significantly reduced (at the level of 5%) 62.2, 80 and 65.2 mg / kg of the metal zinc concentration in carbonate, respectively,  as compared to the treatment control. Earthworms significantly increased zinc (81.45 mg kg) in the  carbonate fraction. On the other hand, there was a significant increase in the amount of exchangeable copper with the addition of organic fertilizer to  worm, as compared to the control sample. This increase  was significant (at the level of 1%) in the treatment of Vermicompost (1.27 mg / kg) and carrot pulp (1.32 mg / kg), as compared to control.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to model biomass with soil parameters in Hir-Neur rangelands of Ardabil Province. Initially, considering the vegetation types and different classes of environmental factors, at the maximum vegetative growth stage, using one square meter plot, biomass was estimated by clipping and weighing method. For each transect, a soil sample was taken and transferred to the soil laboratory and the various parameters were measured by conventional methods. The relationship between soil factors and the rangeland biomass was analyzed and simulated using linear multiple regression. Among the measured soil factors, the Silt, EC, Ca, Ksoluble, OC, POC, pH, Mg, TNV, clay, P, and volumetric moisture had the highest effect and percentage of biomass forecast (p<0.01). The accuracy of the simulated maps was analyzed using RMSE criteria and for grasses, forbs, shrubs, and total biomass were equal to 0.81, 0.65, 0.34, and 0.46, respectively. The results of this study, not only point out the importance of soil factors on the biomass but also as a baseline data for managing rangelands, supply-demand, and carbon balance can be used in the current section.

Abstract

One of the significant factors affecting biochar properties is the pyrolysis temperature. This study aimed to investigate the effect of pyrolysis temperature on the properties and fractionation of Zn and Pb in biochars produced by sewage sludge. Biochars were prepared at temperatures of 300 to 700 °C and the physicochemical properties, availability, and fractionation of Zn and Pb were investigated. The results showed that pH, pHzpc, percentage of calcium carbonate, cation exchange capacity, specific surface area, and porosity in biochars were higher than in the feedstock. By increasing biochar production temperature, the mentioned properties increased. FT-IR revealed that the OH functional group is present in free form, either in the structure of C-OH and -COOH and aliphatic-CH2 groups in the sewage sludge. By converting sewage sludge to biochar, the intensity of these peaks decreased. In contrast, peaks representing complex aromatic structures appeared. The availability of Zn and Pb in biochar was reduced as compared to sewage sludge. The results of fractionation indicated that sewage sludge has bio-availability and toxicity of Pb and Zn. the amount of oxide and residual fractions of these two metals increased by converting sewage sludge to biochar at different temperatures. Therefore, it seems that biochar production from sewage sludge reduces the toxicity and bio-availability of Zn and Pb. Also, by incrementing the temperature of production, the bio-availability potential (bonding with organic matter), and non-toxicity (residual) of these metals increased.

Abstract

One of the most significant environmental crises in arid, semi-arid, sub-humid, and even humid regions is the destructive phenomenon of desertification and in the arid and semi-arid regions is wind erosion. These problems exist in large areas of Iran and it is necessary to use an environmentally friendly and economic method to solve this problem. In this study, calcium bentonite clay was used for the first time in Iran and perhaps in the worlds in the critical region of Sajzi, which covers an area of 65 hectares. Experiments were performed on the crusts after one year of mulching with bentonite clay. The results showed that wind erosion has a negative and significant correlation with the mean weight diameter and geometric weight diameter of aggregate, aggregates with diameters greater than 0.25 mm, shear strength, and penetration resistance. On the other hand, the results of the permeability test using double-ring and by three models (Kostiakov, Horton, and Philip) showed that the lowest mean square error (SSE) and the highest coefficient of determination (R2) belonged to the Kostiakov model in the mulch-applied and control samples. This result indicated the superiority of the Kostiakov model compared to Horton and Philip's models. Wind erosion intensity was also measured in situ using a portable wind tunnel at 20 points in the Sajzi region. The findings showed that mulch application has controlled more than 95% of soil erosion.

Abstract

Identifying the behavior of precipitation is one of the most important planning principles related to water resources. In this research, an attempt was made to analyze the trend of time changes in extreme rainfall profiles of the country by using the daily rainfall data of 3423 synoptic, climatology, and rain gauge stations for the period from 1970 to 2016 and by performing interpolation using the kriging method. Then, using percentile profiles (percentile less than 10, less than 25, 25 to 75, 75 to 90, and above 90) and regression analysis, changes in the frequency of member days of each of the percentile methods over time were calculated and mapped. The results showed that during the studied period, 86.6% of cells associated with days with the tenth percentile or less in the country had an increasing trend. On the other hand, the pixels associated with days with the 90th percentile and more have shown an increasing trend. Considering that the pixels with the 25th, 25th-75th percentiles (normal), and 75th percentile have shown a decreasing trend in terms of the number of days in their group, it can be concluded that the country's rainfall conditions and the days with rainfall are towards the limit values has moved and the possibility of drought or destructive floods has increased in the country.

Abstract

The formation of vortices behind the gates of diversion dams is an operational challenge. Such vortices lead to vibration and corrosion in the gate, reducing the lifetime and raising the operational cost of the dam. This study investigated these vortices and their formation. It was found that the gate or cutoff wall was not the only explanation for the vortices; the closed side gates also contribute to vortex formation. Furthermore, an increase in the gate width reduced vorticity; the vortex size experienced a 200% reduction as the gate size increased by 200%. The cutoff wall diameter was another determinant. An increase in the cutoff wall diameter raised vorticity. The vortices increased by 50% as the wall diameter increased by 150%.

Abstract

The improvement of water consumption efficiency is very significant, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. In this research, the effects of three hydrogel rates (0, 10, and 50 Mg ha-1) and three irrigation regimes (50%, 70%, and 100% of water requirement) on growth, yield, and oil production of Thymus daenensis were studied in a lysimetric experiment. The process of hydrogel synthesis was performed with sodium alginate as the main bone of the polymer and acrylic acid and acrylamide as monomers with the rapeseed meal biochar was made at 300 ºC. The results showed that the essential oil content produced by the plant was impressed by the hydrogel application. The essential oil content increased with an increase in water deficit, but the essential oil yield decreased in the lysimeters with water deficit compared to the ones without water stress. Besides, the application of 50 Mg ha-1 hydrogel caused a 17% increase in the dry matter and a 12% increase in the plant's height. According to the results of this experiment, the application of hydrogel caused the improvement in most characteristics of the Thymus daenensis in water stress conditions.

Abstract

One of the structures for regulating the water level in the irrigation and drainage ducts is the lopac gates, which are proposed as a structure for regulating and controlling the flow level. In this study, a new design of this type of structure has been proposed in which the gates are placed next to each other in pairs, and they are called multiple lopac gates. The objective of this research is to investigate the effective hydraulic parameters of the proposed structure and compare it in a case where a gate is used under the same conditions. All the simulations were modeled with 3 amounts of opening 30, 45, and 60 degrees and at 3 flow rates of 20, 40, and 60 liters per second and using Flow3d software, in these simulations, the number of mesh cells is 1000000 and RNG turbulence model is used.  The results showed that the maximum shear stress was reduced by an average of 38% compared to the single gate mode in most tests at different openings and flow rates using multiple lopac gates, and the largest amount of this reduction was related to the opening of 45 degrees, and the flow rate is 40 liters per second with a value of 76%. Also, the forces acting on the gate at different flow rates and openings will be reduced by 150% on average. In the qualitative investigation of flow vortices, the investigations also showed that vortex range, length, and strength are reduced compared to the single gate mode when two gates are used, and the number of vortices increases compared to when a single valve.

Abstract

Drought represents one of the most critical natural disasters, exerting profound impacts on agriculture, society, the economy, and water resources. Various indices are used to monitor drought and its effects. This study aims to monitor drought in the Zayandeh-Rud Basin using the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), the Standardized Precipitation-Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), the Evaporative Demand Drought Index (EDDI), the Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI), and the Reconnaissance Drought Index (RDI). All these indices are based on potential evapotranspiration, incorporating parameters such as precipitation, temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and sunshine duration. These five indices were calculated and evaluated during the statistical period of 1993–2023 for meteorological stations in Isfahan, East Isfahan, Kabootarabad, Daran, Shahreza, Najafabad, and Mobarakeh. After calculating the indices and using spatial zoning maps, the studied stations were compared in terms of these indices. The continuity of dry and wet periods, as well as the intensity of droughts and wet spells, was analyzed. Subsequently, drought intensities during different years in these stations were ranked using the TOPSIS model based on factors such as precipitation, potential evapotranspiration, and station elevation. The results showed that in stations with a dry climate (such as Isfahan, East Isfahan, and Shahreza), drought occurrences (as indicated by higher rankings) have been consecutive over multiple years. Comparing the performance of the indices in the studied stations using spatial zoning maps revealed that the intensity of droughts and wet spells in regions with dry and semi-dry climates was not very significant. However, in areas with humid climates, the fluctuations in drought and wet spell intensities were quite substantial. The findings indicate that the PDSI and EDDI indices are more suitable for evaluating drought in dry climates.

Abstract

Mathematical models are a suitable tool for surface irrigation design. The EDOSIM model, as a surface irrigation simulation-optimization model, utilizes simulation with the volume balance model and meta-heuristic optimization. In this study, with the aim of improving the simulation of the advanced phase in the EDOSIM model, the Full Hydrodynamic model was replaced by the Volume Balance model for furrow irrigation design, leading to the development of the EDOSIM-HD model. The Saint-Venant equations were discretized using the implicit Preissmann’s finite difference scheme and transformed into a set of nonlinear equations in the form of a system of equations. The resulting system of equations was linearized using the Newton-Raphson method and solved using the Sparse matrix method. The results were compared with the SIRMOD software to validate the simulation. Using the particleswarm solver of the MATLAB software optimization toolbox, the inflow rate as a decision variable was used to optimize the hydraulic objective function consisting of efficiency, adequacy, and uniformity. The results in the experimental field showed that in the initial simulation with an inflow rate of 1.4 lps, important irrigation times, infiltration volume, performance indicators, profiles, and hydrographs showed a deep percolation loss of about 50 percent of water. Also, the results of the EDOSIM-HD model were closer to the Hydrodynamic model of the SIRMOD software than the EDOSIM model. By optimizing and increasing the optimal flow rate (1.8 lps) compared to the initial inflow rate, the advance, cut-off, depletion, and recession times were reduced, and the required infiltration time remained unchanged. The reduction in infiltration volume was also achieved by applying higher inflow rates in less time. All performance indicators also moved closer to their optimal state. Except for Tail Water Ration (TWR), which showed a slight increase of 11 percent (due to higher inflow rate), was negligible compared to the sharp 22% reduction in Depth Percolation Ratio (DPR), and 10% increase in Application Efficiency (Ea). Totally, according to the performance indicators obtained in the validation with the SIRMOD, the simulation of the EDOSIM-HD model was better than in the EDOSIM model in the advanced phase of furrow irrigation design
