Abstract

In order to find suitable cultivar and N-topdress rates in corn planted after wheat harvest, a field experiment was conducted in Isfahan University of Technology Experiment Farm located at Shervedan, Falavarjan in 1994. The experiment design was a split plot with a randomized complete block arrangement and four replications. Main plots were four N-topdress rates (0, 90, 180, and 270 kg/ha) and the subplots were three corn hybrids (S.C.I08, S.C.301, and D.C.370). N-topdress rates had no effect on the stages of plant development (50% emergence, transition, pollination and physiological maturity). Also there were no significant effects on the number of leaves per plant, LAI, plant height and plant dry weight measured at pollination stage for different N-topdress rates. As expected, plant development stages differed among hybrids except that of time until 50% emergence. Differences in the number of leaves per plant, LAI, plant height and dry weight of plant measured at pollination stage were highly significant among hybrids. D.C. 370 had the highest values for all of these characteristics. Dry matter accumulation during growing season increased as the N-topdress rates were increased for the hybrids. Also N-topdress rates x hybrid interaction was significant for biological yield. Grain yield, number of seeds per ear, 100-seed weight and biological yield were affected by N-topdress rates and hybrid. Higher grain yield of D.C. 370 can be attributed to greater number of seeds per ear. The results of this study suggest that D.C. 370 with 90 kg/ha N-topdress rate can be used after wheat harvest in Isfahan.

Abstract

Diallel crosses among 6 Avena sativa L. and A. sterilis L. lines and introductions were used to evaluate the validity of the assumptions for the genetic model. Number of days to pollination, plant height at pollination and at maturity, as well as grain and stem protein percentages were evaluated. According to Griffing's method 1 the reciprocal mean squares for all the traits under study were significant. But based on Hayman's analysis, the maternal effects for all the traits studied were not significant. Therefore, reciprocal means were used to evaluate the validity of the absence of multiple alleles, linkage and epistasis effects using regression of Wr on Vr and analysis of variance for Wr + Vr and Wr - Vr. Based on the results of the 3 methods, the genetic models for plant height at maturity and days to pollination were unbiased. Therefore, Hayman's analysis was used to estimate the genetic parameters for these traits. For plant height at pollination and stem protein percentage, significant and nonsignificant differences of regression slope from one and zero (Ho: β = 1 and Ho: β = 0) were detected, respectively. For these traits the biasedness of the model was removed after elimination of one parent from the diallel table. Grain protein percentage was not analyzed as it necessitated the elimination of 2 parents from the diallel table. In general, regression of Wr on Vr compare to Wr + Vr and Wr - Vr analysis of variances showed to be a more valid inductive method for testing the accuracy of the genetic model assumptions. Also, results of the Hayman and Jinks analysis, both when the assumptions are valid and when not, showed that genetic parameters are affected by the biasedness of the model, and that different estimates will be obtained. The Griffing's method was less affected by the unbiasedness of the model than Hayman and Jinks method. Therefore, it seems that preliminary testing for validity of the assumptions is necessary in Hayman and Jinks genetic model.

Abstract

In a completely randomized design, 600 commercial day old broiler chickens were used to study the possibility of replacing corn with barley. Each of 10 experimental diets in which corn was replaced with barley at levels of 0, 5, 10, 20 and 40 percent, with and without tallow, were given to 4 replicates of 15 chickens each. At 42, 49 and 56th days of age, one male and one female from each pen were killed. Body weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion ratio were not affected by different levels of barley at 42th day of age. Increasing the level of barley had not effect on body weight gain at 56th day of age. Feed conversion ratio improved slightly due to addition of 4% tallow to the diets containing different levels of barley. Abdominal fat was increased due to added tallow in males and females. Increasing slaughter age increased abdominal fat in both sexes. Difference in abdominal fat in females was more than males.

Abstract

Optimum rice population densities and the response of rice yield and yield components to population densities and planting pattern are important factors helping rice producers and researchers to achieve maximum productivity. For this reason, a randomized complete block design experiment was conducted during the summer of 1995 at Isfahan University of Technology Research Farm located at Lavark, Najafabad. Zayandeh-rood cultivar was transplanted with three seedlings per hill at row spacing of 15, 25 and 35 cm and hill spacing of 10, 15 and 20 cm under flooded conditions. Row spacing influenced the plant height significantly at heading and anthesis stages. Wider row spacing, enhanced days to 50% heading and anthesis and consequently grain filling duration and ripening stage coincided with unfavorable conditions at the end of the season, which decreased the percentage of maturity. Although number of tillers per unit area increased, tillers per plant decreased as row spacing was reduced. Narrow row spacing limited vegetative growth after anthesis and thereby growth rate of panicle increased. With reduction of row spacing, without any change in the percentage of full grains per panicle and grain weight, number of panicle per unit area increased but number of grains per panicle decreased. At greater row spacing, grain yield per unit area decreased although grain yield per plant and harvest index increased. Although, effects of hill spacing were similar to those of row spacing, hill spacing usually did not influence plant characters, yield components and grain yield significantly. Stepwise regression and path-coefficient analysis revealed that number of panicle per unit area is the most important yield components. It also showed that indirect effects of panicle per unit area on yield through its association with grain per panicle prevented real effects of grain per panicle on yield. Fifteen × 15 cm spacing produced maximum yield which is probably recommendable for rice production in Isfahan.

Abstract

In order to study the effects of rate and time of nitrogen application on vegetative characters, i.e., yield and yield components of rice (Zayandeh-rood variety), an experiment was conducted at Isfahan University of Technology research farm during summer 1996. Four N rates including (60, 90, 120 and 150 KgN/ha) and four splitting form (1- all N applied before transplanting 2- 1/3 N applied before transplanting, 1/3 at the beginning of tillering and 1/3 at the emergence of first panicle in 50% hills 3- 1/2 at the beginning of tillering and 1/2 at the emergence of first panicle in 50% hills 4- 1/3 at the beginning of tillering and 2/3 at the emergence of first panicle in 50% hills) were evaluated in a factorial experiment which was arranged in a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. Plant height, number of tillers per unit area and days to heading and maturity increased with an increase in the rate of fertilizer application. Grain yield and number of panicles per square meter increased when the N rate was raised to 120 Kg N/ha, while application of 150 Kg N/ha resulted in the reduction of grain yield and number of panicles. Nitrogen rate increases did not have any significant effect on number of grains per panicle. The grain weight did not follow any particular trend at different application rates, but harvest index and percentage of filled grains were decreased as the N rate increased. The percentage of nitrogen content of plant was increased as a result of higher N - rate at heading and harvest times. Treatments containing base application of nitrogen resulted in an increase in plant height, number of tillers, plant dry matter, grain yield and number of panicles per square meter, although it caused a reduction in harvest index. The number of grains per panicle and grain weight did not follow any particular trend under the influence of time of application, although plant nitrogen content increased with a delay in time of fertilizer application.

Abstract

Immature embryo culture response of 28 durum wheat (Triticum turgidum var. durum) cultivars was studied using MS medium in Tissue Culture Laboratory of College of Agriculture, Isfahan University of Technology. Donor plants were grown in a recirculating hydroponic system and pots in a greenhouse. Regenerated immature embryos were recorded at 2, 4, 8 and 16 days after inoculation. Assessment of durum wheat cultivars for immature embryo culture was conducted by percentage and rate of regenerated embryo, using a split plot design arranged in completely randomized design with 5 replications. The analysis of variances showed that there were highly significant differences among cultivars for plant regeneration capacity. The highest potential and rate of embryo regeneration (two days after inoculation) were observed in “Shahivandi” which is a native cultivar of west Iran. “Awl1/Sbl4” with a mean of 48.5%, “Hagla” and “Ofen/Kil” with a mean of 80% have the poorest and the best mean of regeneration during the recording period, respectively. The high regeneration potential is important in view of reducing the time constrain and somaclonal variation in a breeding program.

Abstract

The calcification of soils and the effects of topography on this process were studied in semi-arid regions of Kermanshah. From a toposequence, based on the previous soil surveys of the region, five profiles were selected, and field studies and laboratory analyses were carried out on soils. Alluvial - colluvial fans, piedmont alluvial plains, and old plateaux were three main physiographies on the selected toposequence. Soil moisture and temperature regimes were Xeric and Thermic, respectively. The results indicate that redistribution of carbonates and soil formation processes may be categorized in four specific stages to be described in the text. Accumulation of calcium carbonates in soil profiles showed two basic forms: one in sandy layers of fine - textured soil profiles under the influence of abrupt textural changes and lower permeability, and the second in subsurface horizons of soils with calcareous parent material. The morphological evidences showed that in addition to translocation from upper horizons of carbonates by solution and suspension, physical movements to subsurface layers of fine calcareous materials have also affected the formation of calcic horizons. In other words, CaCO3 may have moved as fine particles through soil cracks and subsequently accumulated in the lower horizons. Soil mineralogy showed considerable amounts of illite, Chlorite, smectite and palygorskite clay minerals. Some pedogenic transformations of illite and chlorite may have caused formation of smectite and palygorskite.

Abstract

The reproductive development stage is a crucial stage in plant life to study the potential of plant yield. Salt tolerance in this stage is desirable to obtain a stable and high yield. A Cynodon dactylon population from America (Cyn3, London Univ. Collection), was suitable to study the detached immature inflorescence in booting stage on liquid medium. The detached inflorescenes were cultured on a liquid medium prepared with or without various supplements of NaCl (0 to 2%) and kinetin concentrations. The sequence of morphological events of spike development in vitro, and the effects of NaCl on spikelet opening, embryo sac growth, fertilization and caryopsis development were studied. The liquid medium supplemented with 10-7 M kinetin resulted in natural caryopsis development. Supplementing NaCl to the liquid medium had deteriorating effects on the embryo sac development and resulted in the production of abnormal caryopses. The abnormal caryopses were smaller in diameter with a more fragile pericarp. However, a small number of spikelets grown in liquid medium, supplemented with low salt concentration up to 5%, produced normal caryopses and germinated well on soaked filter paper in petri dishes at appropriate conditions.

Abstract

In vitro salt tolerance of 28 cultivars of durum wheat with native and exotic origins was investigated, using MS medium containing sodium chloride. The resulting calli were subjected to 8 salinity levels including 0, 0.3, 0.6, 0.9, 1.2, 1.5 and 1.8 percent NaCl (w/v). Donor plants of explant (immature embryo) were grown in a recirculating hydroponics and pots in a greenhouse as well as in the field. Assessment of calli was conducted after 0, 8 and 16 days after subculture of calli into the NaCl-contained medium. Callus growth rate, relative callus growth rate and percentages of callus necrosis were measured, using a 8 × 28 factorial experiment layout in a completely randomized design with 3 observations per treatment and 3 replications. Results of analysis of variances showed that among the criteria, relative growth rate of callus was the most reliable, while callus growth rate as not being quantitatively measured, was less devoted. Results of this study revealed that 'PI 40100' and 'Dipper-6' were superior genotypes for in vitro salt tolerance. The high relative callus growth rate and less callus necrosis of these cvs. may indicate their superior genetic potential for in vitro salinity tolerance.

Abstract

Biological activity and making use of sage essential oil in different industries depend on the chemical composition of the essential oil which is itself affected by several factors. In order to study the quality and quantity of the essential oil during growth stages, samples of the plant were gathered. The essential oil was extracted through steam distillation from the different plant parts separately. Volatile parts were analyzed with GCMS instrument. The study showed that the quality and quantity of the chemicals from different parts of the plant were not the same: Alpha-thujone and Beta-thujone as two important compounds were the lowest in the leaves of sage at flowering stage (1.2%, 3%, respectively). The study also showed that the quantity of Camphor (2.9%), Cineole (2%), Alpha-thujone (6.4%) and Beta-thujone (1.6%) in the essential oil of aerial parts of the plant were lower than the international standards (33%, 10%, 16% & 2%, respectively).

Abstract

A two-year study (1996-97) was conducted to verify tillage effects on several soil properties and corn yield. The soil (fine loamy, Thermic, typic Haplargids) was treated by conventional (CT) and no-till (NT) systems. Soil organic matter (OM), mean weight diameter (MWD), penetration resistance (Cl), bulk density (BD), total nitrogen (TN) and aggregate size distribution at depths of 0-20 and 20-40 cm were measured.

No-till system caused the OM to be twice as much as that in the conventional tillage system. Total nitrogen in the NT and at depths of 0-20 and 20-40 cm were higher by 30% and 20%, respectively. No differences obtained in bulk density and penetration resistance, but MWD in the NT was 20% and 10% higher than CT in the 0-20 and 20-40 cm depths, respectively. Mean weight diameter of the aggregates in the CT was smaller than that in NT. Aggregates of less than 0.25 mm at 0-20 cm depths were almost 25% higher in CT compared to NT system. The yield in the NT system was significantly lower than CT. Although reduced cultivation could bring a better soil physical condition, low initial organic matter, weak structure and heavy-textured soil produced unsuitable conditions for the crop roots and, consequently, resulted in low yield. Therefore, no-till system in this region would not be recommended.

Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate the capability of reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) storage proteins, and their genetic variability in different winter and spring isolines, cultivars and landraces. Gliadin proteins were extracted from the flour of five randomly selected seeds of each genotype. In this method, Nucleosil C18 300 A column (250×4.6 mm ID), equipped with a guard column and acetonitrile containing TFA as mobile phase was used.

All selected conditions for RP-HPLC such as suitable velocity and resolution were sufficient to achieve the objectives of this study. Under these conditions, the number of gliadin components by RP-HPLC analysis was more than electrophoresis subunits. In addition, quantitative results of RP-HPLC facilitated the data analysis. Also gliadin analysis by RP-HPLC had a high potential in detecting rye (Secale cereale L.) genes, so that the presence of ω-secalins in the genome of Falat variety was easily detected. Therefore, it was concluded that RP-HPLC analysis of gliadin proteins is as efficient as electrophoresis, and could even replace it in some cases. The result of cluster analysis for gliadin polypeptides indicated the gradual increase of genetic variation from isolines to landraces. Generally speaking, among the landraces, Ali Abad, Aghda, Sefid Bafghi, Ghermez Bafghi, Shahdas and Sorkheh had greater genetic variations.

Abstract

In order to determine the most suitable cultivar and N level based on yield and silage value of forage sorghum, an experiment was conducted in summer 1995. The experiment was arranged in a split-plot design with four replications. Two levels of N (300, 500 Kg/ha urea) were the main plots and the subplots were three sorghum hybrids (Sugar graze, Super dan and Speed feed). Seeds were hand sown on June 29 with an inter row space of 50 cm and a final density of 20 plant/m2.

The results showed that when the N rate increased, forage yields and percent of protein in forage and silage increased. Also panicle dry weight increased at anthesis. The N rate had no significant effect on other traits. A significant difference was observed among hybrids for all characteristics measured. Sugar graze with a bigger stem diameter was taller and produced higher number of leaves. At anthesis, plant leaf and stem dry weight was also highest for Sugar graze however, the highest panicle dry weight belonged to Speed feed. There was a significant interaction between hybrids and N levels for dry matter production. The percent of leaf, stem and panicle dry matter was highest in sugar graze, Super dan and Speed feed, respectively. The Sugar graze produced the highest forage and dry matter yield. This hybrid produced 30 ton/ha of dry matter and 97 ton/ha of forage, respectively.

 Furthermore, this cultivar had the highest percent of forage crude protein (7.45%) and the least percent of forage crude fiber (25.12%). Ensiling caused a decrease in percentage of crude protein and an increase in crude fiber. The Sugar graze and Speed feed had the highest and lowest dry matter digestibility, respectively. Based on the results obtained from this study, Sugar graze was found to be the most suitable hybrid due to its highest forage and dry matter yield and better silage quality. Higher N rate (500 kg/ha) is also recommended for higher forage yield and higher percentage of protein.

Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate the responses of Iranian commercial genotypes of maize (hybrids and their inbred lines) to callus induction and plant regeneration, using mature embryos. Twenty five genotypes comprising of 12 inbred lines, 11 single cross hybrids, 1 double cross hybrid and 1 composite cultivar were used. Mature embryos of the genotypes were plated on MS and N6 media. Callus induction rates were evaluated using relative growth rate of callus (RGR), callus fresh weight (CFW), callus dry weight (CDW) and callus growth rate (CGR).

The results indicated that genotypes highly varied in both callus induction and plant regeneration. IL8 inbred line, SC7 (IL4×IL8) and SC9 (IL6×IL10) hybrids had the highest callus production capacity (based on CFW and CDW), whereas the highest RGR and CGR were obtained for ILl inbred line and SC9 hybrid. The estimated heterosis based on superior parent showed the highest heterosis for CFW, CDW, RGR and CGR in SC9 hybrid. Genotype × medium interactions for CWD, RGR and CGR were significant. For instance, SC9 hybrid on MS medium and IL8 on N6 medium produced the highest CGR. There was a significant difference between the observation periods [8, 12, 16 and 20 days after planting (DAP)], so that CGR was the least at 8 DAP and increased gradually till 16 DAP, but declined afterward. CGR had a range of 0.51 in IL8 inbred line to 0.74 in SC9 hybrid. Comparisons of the genotype for plant regeneration percent indicated that ILl and IL10 inbred lines as well as SC2 and SC4 single cross hybrids had the highest regeneration rates. Considering plant regeneration as a critical and genotypic dependent factor, it can be concluded that ILl and IL10 inbred as well as SC4 (IL4×IL5, ‘single cross 301’), SC2 (IL2×IL3, ‘single cross 704’) and SC7 hybrids are recommended for use in tissue culture-based breeding programs in maize.

Abstract

Experience has shown that all centralized planning, policy-making and decision-making which presuppose exclusion of public participation have never been successful in achieving their objectives. The goal of this research is to determine the driving and preventive factors of herders’ participation in rehabilitation designs of Aghghala ranges in Gorgan Province. The research method was direct observation in which measurement techniques were used. A questionnaire was used to divide the sample society into two categories: the experts who design the range management system, and the local herders.

 Results obtained from this investigation showed that according to the experts training, economic, planning and social parameters have the greatest effects on local herders’ participation while the herders maintained that planning, economic, training and social parameters have the greatest effect on decreasing their participation.

Abstract

Soil loss due to erosion is a common problem in most parts of Iran. Reduced soil organic matter and lack of proper agricultural management have intensified the problem in recent years. Conservation tillage systems are becoming more widely used in corn production in other parts of the world because of soil losses due to wind and water erosion and energy inputs. Changes in tillage methods, however, create different environments for the germination, development and maturation of corn plants. Most corn hybrids have been selected and developed under conventional tillage systems but these hybrids mayor may not be well adapted to both systems. This study aims to evaluate the performance of five locally grown corn hybrids under zero and conventional tillage methods. The experiment was conducted for 2 years on a plot of land specified for this study. Experimental design was a split plot with randomized complete block arrangement and four replications.

Seedling and juvenile plant growth were not affected by tillage method and were similar for all hybrids. Plant dry matter was affected significantly by the cropping system and was lower in no-till method. Plant leaf area index and stem diameter reduced significantly in the no-till system. Reduction was greater in the second year of the experiment. Also grain yields were significantly different among years, tillage method and plant genotypes. Yield reduction was highest in the second year of the experiment under no-till cropping system. There was no interaction between tillage method and corn genotypes, indicating that, usually genotypes perform similarly with regard to grain yield under both tillage methods. The results suggest that corn production under no-till system in Isfahan is probably associated with yield reduction.

Abstract

In order to evaluate the relationship between SDS-sedimentation value and breadmaking quality of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), glutenin subunits of different genotypes (foreign and Iranian cultivars) were analyzed by reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC). SDS-sedimentation value was used as an indirect criterion for breadmaking quality.

 Correlation coefficients revealed a closer relationship between low molecular weight (LMW) glutenin subunits and variation in SDS-sedimentation value. Principal component analysis confirmed the presence of association between some of the glutenin subunits and SDS-sedimentation value. Based on the stepwise regression analysis, two LMW and four high molecular weight (HMW) peaks (subunits) were selected which accounted for 70.2 and 18.7% of variability in SDS sedimentation values, respectively. On the basis of the results of the stepwise regression analysis, a discriminant function was developed. The great efficiency of discriminant function in correct classification of completely different genotypes (Iranian landraces and cultivars) showed that the observed relationship between glutenin subunits and SDS-sedimentation value has a genetic basis and the effects of LMW and HMW glutenin subunits on SDS-sedimentation value are additive. Therefore, it seems that this method based on more protein components (rather than only on HMW glutenin subunits) can be used to predict breadmaking quality of wheat against many genetic backgrounds.

Abstract

Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of dietary energy levels on the performance of Arian broiler chicks. Trial 1 was performed in summer and trial 2 in fall. Both experiments were accomplished in 5×2 factorial designs, involving 5 levels of dietary metabolizable energy and two sexes. Each of the 10 resulting treatments was replicated 4 and 3 times in trials 1 and 2, respectively. The metabolizable energy contents in diets number 1 to 5 were 2800, 2900, 3000, 3100 and 3200 Kcal/kg for starter (0-4 weeks) period and 2900, 3000, 3100, 3200 and 3300 Kcal/kg for grower (4-7 weeks) period, respectively. The ratios of energy to each nutrient were the same for all diets in each stage of the experiments.

In both experiments, body weight gain and feed conversion ratio improved significantly (P<0.01) when diets with higher levels of energy were consumed. Feed intake was affected (P<0.01) by the dietary energy content only in summer (trial 1) resulting from the reduced intake of chicks fed with the lowest energy level. Abdominal fat percentage was decreased (P<0.01) in chicks fed with the lowest energy diet in summer. In both experiments, the cost of the feed per unit of live body weight was reduced (P<0.01) in accordance with the reduction in diet density. As expected, body weight gain, feed conversion ratio, abdominal fat and cost of the feed per unit of live body weight for male chicks were significantly better than the same values for females (P<0.01).

Abstract

In this study 130 honeybee colonies in 4 locations (Damavand, Tehran, Qum and Karaj-Savojbolagh) were sampled to determine the phenotypic correlations among 9 morphological and 3 production traits. The morphological traits were length (FL) and width (FB) of fore wing, cubital index (CI), length of hind leg (HL), length of probosics (LP), slender index (SI), length (WL) and width (WT) of wax mirror, distance between wax mirror (WD), index of wax mirror (IW) and corbicular area (CA). The production traits were honey yield (WH), pollen gathering (WP) and wax: production (WW). Data were subjected to analysis of variance, phenotypic correlations, stepwise regression and path coefficient analysis. Results of phenotypic correlations demonstrated that correlations between FL with FB (0.65), WL (0.361), WT (0.261), HL (0.555) and LP (0.257), WH with WP (0.300), WW with WH (0.560) and CA with WH (0.234) were significant (P≤0.01). FB with WH (r=0.204) was also significant but there was no significant correlation between CA and WP. Results of stepwise regression and path coefficient analysis showed that whereas morphological traits were settled as independent variables, much of the corresponding changes in production traits remain uninterpreted. In spite of the significant correlations among several morphological and production traits, body measurements alone are not suitable criteria to select colonies for high productions of honey, pollen and wax.

Abstract

Effects of the β-adrenergic agonist metaproterenol were studied daily gain, carcass composition and feed consumption of Varamini female lambs were studied. Thirty lambs were randomly assigned to a randomized complete block design with three groups (treatments) and two blocks (live weight). The ration was similar for all groups (ME: 2.6 MCal/kg, CP: 14.9%) and lambs were fed ad libitum. Metaproterenol was injected subcutaneously at 0 (control), 7 (low dose) and 14 (high dose) µg kg-1 w75. Lambs were weighed at 20-day intervals.

Mean daily weight gain and feed conversion ratio improved significantly by metaproterenol (P<0.05), but feed intake was not affected. Hot carcass weight, carcass weight minus fat-tail, dressing percentage and longissimus muscle characteristics were different among the three groups (P<0.01). Physically separated fat from several depots and fat-tail weight significantly reduced in the metaproterenol groups. Carcass fat content decreased but carcass protein content increased in metaproterenol treated lambs.
