Abstract

The nutritive value of the annual alfalfa (Medicago rigidulla, Medicago polymorpha and Medicago scutellata) species harvested at flowering stage was assessed by chemical composition, in vitro dry matter and nitrogen digestibility, in sacco dry matter and nitrogen degradation (0, 8, 12, 24, 48 and 72 h) and palatability (short-term intake rate, STIR) methods. Mean values of the chemical analysis results (%) for M. rigidulla, M. polymorpha and M. scutellata respectively were as follows: OM 85.1, 86.1 and 86.9 CP 25.1, 23.8 and 15.6 NDF 23.2, 24.8 and 30.0 ADF 18.3, 19.9 and 24.0 ADIN 0.36, 0.11 and 0.22 calcium 1.4, 1.3 and 1.2 phosphorus 0.23, 0.28 and 0.24 potassium 1.5, 1.5 and 1.4. The digestibilities of the DM and OM for M. rigidulla were 0.82 and 0.79 M. polymorpha 0.83.5 and 0.80 M. scutellata 0.75 and 0.69, respectively. The degradabilities of DM and CP at outflow rate of 0.05 for M. rigidulla were 0.72 and 0.55 M. polymorpha 0.71 and 0.57 M. scutellata 0.63 and 0.58, respectively. Finally, the palatabilities (using short-term intake rate method) for M. rigidulla, M. polymorpha and M. scutellata species were 13.6, 12.8 and 11.3 (g DM/min) respectively. According to the methods used, the descending ranking order (high to low) of these species on the basis of their nutritional value was M.rigidulla, M.polymorpha and M.scutellata.

Abstract

In order to study the morphological characteristics and yield of leafy corn hybrids, and comparie them with those of commercial hybrids, an experiment was conducted in the research field of Agricultural College, Tarbiat Modares University in 2005. A complete block design was used with three replications. Hybrids were obtained from crosses between leafy inbred lines and also commercial inbred lines with leafy inbred. There was a significant difference in single crosses on above and below leaf number and area, biomass, leaf length, plant height and distance between ear and tassel, internodes length, ear height (p<0.01). The most and least above ear leaf number were for b7*a4 and commercial hybrids, respectively. Most of the leafy hybrids had more above and below leaf number than commercial hybrids. Some of leafy hybrids produced the same yield as commercial hybrids and the others produced more. Considerable yield increment in the leafy corn can be attributed to the fact that the leafy gene produce twice leaf area in corn. Internodes length reduced in leafy hybrids due to increasing leaf number without plant height increment. The maximum and minimum grain yield were for b2*a4 leafy hybrid (10.22 t/ha) and SC108 non-leafy commercial corn (6.37 t/ha) respectively. Generally, b7*a4 and b2*a4 leafy hybrids produced the most biomass and leafy hybrid b2*a4 had the most grain yield.

Abstract

In order to study the effects of salt stress and leaf feeding by ascorbic acid on antioxidant enzyme activity, proline accumulation and lipid peroxidation on leaves and roots of Brassica napus L. cvs. Okapi, an experiment was conducted as a factorial in a completely random design with three replications. Plants were exposed to salt stresses by NaCl solution (200 mM) and foliar were treated by ascorbic acid solution (25mM). Catalase, Superoxide dismutase and peroxidase activity were assayed in shoot and root. Also, malondialdehyde content and proline and chlorophyll in leaves were determined. The results showed that the activity of all antioxidant enzymes (except for SOD in roots) were increased significantly in plants under salt stress, and ascorbic acid application, as a antioxidant decreased their activity in leaves, but in roots it was not effective. Total protein content in leaves and roots decreased significantly under salinity condition. Ascorbic acid treatment increased total protein content under salt stress in both roots and shoots. Measurement of malondialdehyde content in leaves and roots showed that lipid peroxidation was increased by active oxygen species due to salt stress, and ascorbic acid reduced lipid peroxidation only in leaves. Chlorophyll content was also decreased by salinity compared to control. According to the result of present study, ascorbic acid application decreases deleterious effect of salinity.

Abstract

In order to study the effect of air and root-zone temperature on yield, yield components, nodulation and nitrogen fixation of three annual medics, an experiment was conducted in controlled environment (growth chamber) at the Faculty of Agriculture, Tarbiat Modares University in 2006. The experiment was performed as a spilt split plot with the layout of completely randomized design with three replications. Air temperature at three levels including 15/10, 20/15 and 25/20ºC day/night, four levels of root-zone temperatures including 5, 10, 15 and 20ºC and three annual medics (Medicago polymorpha, M. radiata and M. rigidula) were randomized to main plot, sub plot and sub sub plot units, respectively. The results showed that there were significant differences among annual medics for dry matter production, yield components and nitrogen fixation. M. rigidula produced more leaves, stems and root dry matter, leaf and stem to root ratio, leaf number and area and forage yield than other annual medics. Also, three annual medics at 25/20ºC day/night air temperature (the highest one) produced more nodulation dry matter (8.85 mg/pot) and nitrogen fixation (7.7 mg/g dry matter) than other temperatures. Plants at the former temperature produced 8 and 2 times more nodulation and nitrogen fixation than 15/10ºC day/night air temperature (the lowest one), respectively. Low root-zone temperature up to 5ºC had severely negative effect on yield and nitrogen fixation in the three studied annual medics. Interaction among annual medics, air and root-zone temperatures showed that M. rigidula was better than other annual medics for yield, nodulation and nitrogen fixation at 25ºC air temperature and 15ºC root-zone temperature . The result showed that M. rigidula had normal growth and development compared with other annual medics at low root-zone temperatures. Thus, M. rigidula may be a better annual medic for cultivation in cold and moderate regions. Therefore, in the zones where soil temperature is lower than 5ºC during the season, cultivation of annual medics is not successful, but in the zones where soil temperature is greater than 10ºC, annual medics have normal growth and produce average yield due to better nitrogen fixation.

Abstract

Deficit irrigation is one of the irrigation management methods that is used to increase Water Use Efficiency. Considering the internal plant adaptability characteristic to water shortage, Partial Root Drying method has been introduced in recent years. In this field research improvement of Water Use Efficiency for Soybean was determined. This experiment which was conducted at four furrow irrigation treatments at the Research Field of Tehran University in Karaj in 2008, consists of full irrigation (100% soil moisture deficit compensation), conventional deficit irrigation at 50 and 75 percent soil moisture deficit compensation and Partial Root Drying at 50 percent soil moisture deficit compensation with three replications. The amounts of irrigation used were exactly compensation level (negligible loss). Results indicated that Water Use Efficiency according to Duncan's Multiple Range Test at the five percent level of probability there was a significant difference between partial root drying treatment (PRD50%) and conventional deficit irrigation treatment at fifty percent soil moisture deficit compensation (DI50%),. Water Use Efficiency in PRD50% compared with DI50%, DI75% and full irrigation increased by 48.3%, 61.9% and 70.1% respectively.
