Abstract

Antioxidant activity of pomegranate (Punica granatum) peel extract (PPE), extracted by either methanol or ethanol solvent, was studied by phosphomolybdenum method. Antioxidant activity of methanolic PPE was higher than the other. To evaluate heat stability of PPE in sunflower oil, the rancidity rate of the oil was compared at 90, 120, and 150ºC with those containing α-tocopherol and synthetic BHT, using rancimat method. A sample including 1000 ppm PPE had the highest induction period at 90,120 ,150ºC. The use of PPE had no adverse effect on sensory characteristics of potato chips as judged by the taste panel.

Abstract

Traditionally, most corn field in Hamedan Province is prepared for planting by moldboard plowing followed by a number of secondary tillage operations. In recent years conservation tillage systems have become more popular. This research was conducted in the form of a split plot experimental design with six tillage treatments and three replications. Main tillage methods including: (T1) conventional tillage (moldboard plow + cyclotiller equipped with roller), (T2) combination tiller (chisel plow equipped with roller) (T3) bandary tillage with chisel blades were considered as main plots and two P fertilizer application including: (F1) fertilize broadcasting and (F2) fertilizer bandary placement were considered as sub plots. During growing seasons, soil mechanical resistance (cone index), soil bulk density and water infiltration in soil were measured. At the end of the growing season (harvesting time), corn yield and its components were measured. Results indicated that tillage methods and soil depth had a significant effect on the soil bulk density and cone index. The effect of tillage on water infiltration in soil was significant. The effect of P fertilizer application on corn yield was significant (P≤0/01) and P fertilizer bandary placement with mean corn yield of 10862 kg/ha had higher yield value than the fertilizer broadcasting with mean corn yield of 9965 kg/ha. Although the difference between tillage methods for corn yield was not statistically different, T2 treatment with mean corn yield of 10913 kg/ha had higher yield value than the other two tillage treatments (T1 with mean corn yield of 10106 kg/ha and T3 with mean corn yield of 10222 kg/ha).

Abstract

The discharge coefficient of labyrinth weirs increases with increasing the crest length in a certain width range. The present research was carried out in a laboratory flume with a length of 8 m, a width of 0.6 m, and a height of 0.6 m. The discharge coefficient of two-cycle symmetric and asymmetric rectangular labyrinth weirs was experimentally measured. The dimensional analysis by the Buckingham π theorem indicated that the discharge coefficient was dependent on Se, B/Wavg, Ht/P, and WL/WR. According to the results, the discharge coefficient decreased with increasing the hydraulic head in the symmetric and asymmetric labyrinth weirs and the linear weir. Asymmetric labyrinth weirs with a WL/WR of 2.05 outperformed symmetric labyrinth weirs with a WL/WR of 1. Quantitatively, the discharge coefficient of the labyrinth weir with a B/Wavg of 3.1 was respectively 21% and 94% higher than that with a B/Wavg of 2.93 and 2.76. The discharge coefficient of the labyrinth weir with a WL/WR of 2.05 was 10-27% higher than that with a WL/WR of 1. The discharge coefficient of the linear weir was 60-250% higher than that of labyrinth weirs.
