Abstract

The production and acreage of corn in Iran and in Fars Province, in particular, are expanding at an increasing rate. The impacts of this event was studied by a risk programming model (MOTAD). The results indicated that the optimal cropping patterns with corn had less variance than the optimal patterns without corn in all income levels. The results also showed that with the introduction of corn into cropping pattern, the use of land and water were increased, but the rate of increase in the use of land was more than the rate of increase in the use of water. By determining risk - aversion coefficient for the sample farmers, their sensitivity to corn price changes were studied. The results indicated that the relationship between corn and wheat is complementary but it is competing with barley, sugarbeet, cotton, cucurbits and legumes.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to introduce an approach for determination of comparative advantage of Basins in the production of crops, enhancing water use efficiency and directing cropping patterns to maximize net virtual water import. A model was constructed and applied assuming five different risks in available water and three levels of irrigation efficiencies (35, 45, and 65). The findings showed that, it is possible to direct optimal cropping pattern at basin level to maximize social profit, water use efficiency and net virtual water import simultaneously. However, in order to derive a definite conclusion, more data are needed about the quantity water embedded in each crop exported from and imported to each country. Moreover, it is necessary to design a suitable export-import plan to be used as a target for directing cropping patterns toward it. The approach used in this study can be viewed as a first step in this direction.

Abstract

Limitations of rainfall and surface water resources farmers have to use both surface and subsurface resources for growing different crops. In this study optimal management of irrigation water allocation and cropping pattern utilizing conjunctive use of surface and subsurface water resources is studied. Also the effect of reducing water consumption in different growth stages with different irrigation strategies for major crops (wheat, barely, corn, sugar beet, rice) in Fars province was studied. The results of the study showed that optimal cropping pattern for the first season would be mainly wheat and in the second season would be corn and rice. Also in this model different policies for decreasing water demand were studied. Since crop water requirement in the second season is higher than the first season, therefore restriction on including high water consuming crops in the second season would be the best choice in the cropping pattern.

Abstract

In the present study, grey fuzzy programming model was used for determination of cropping pattern in central part of Quchan city. The needed data was collected from Almachigh Research Center for the year 2008. Result showed that, current cultivated area of irrigated wheat, irrigated barley and alfalfa is more than and rain-fed barley is less than the represented interval upper and lower limits, respectively. Rain-fed wheat and sugar beet was within the represented intervals. Furthermore, the grey degree of solution set from grey programming was decreased about 48 percent by applying grey fuzzy programming approach. According to the findings, it is recommended that cultivated area is decreased for irrigated wheat, irrigated barley and alfalfa and increased for the rain-fed barley.

Abstract

Studying the sustainability of farming systems entails the integrated assessment of the strong interdependence between their environmental, economic and social attributes. Optimum allocation of water resources in a farming system improves the conservation and sustainability status of resources in addition to reducing the socio-economical damages. In order to analyze and assess the different aspects of farm management and agricultural systems planning, a number of mathematical programming models have been developed in recent decades. The purpose of this article was to assess and analyse the sustanability and determine the appropriate pattern of cropping in a rural farming system, namely, south Baraan located in the east of Isfahan city. In order to incorporate environmental, economic and social dimentions, two criteria of maximum net return and employment creation per unit of agricultural water consumption were defined as system’s sustainability indicators. Thus, the ratios “net return / water consumption” and “employment / water consumption” were optimized by using single and multiple objective fractional programming models. The economic and social efficiency of each unit of agricultural water consumption was computed and compared in several single and multiple objective scenarios of linear and fractional programming models, and finally the most appropriate patterns of cropping for the region were determined based on the available land, water and human resources of the region.

Abstract

Deficit irrigation is one of the strategies used to obtain products with maximum profits in recent years. In this context, research on determining appropriate levels of deficit irrigation is essential. Since determining the different levels of performance through field experiments is difficult, the use of simulation models is a strategy through which we can examine the water balance data, simulate the growth process, and to study different managerial scenarios. The purpose of this study was validation and evaluation of CropSyst, a plant growth model, to determine suitable cropping patterns in deficit irrigation conditions. Applying three deficit irrigation scenarios in model, with values of 10%, 20% and 30% on six crops, fava bean, bean, wheat, potato, sunflower and rice, we concluded that the applied deficit irrigation of 10% to bean, potato and beans, 20% to sunflower and 30% to wheat had been suitable, and it is better not to apply deficit irrigation in rice. Also, since in final selection, the rate of water productivity is one of the basic criteria in each crop mentioned above, determining net benefit based on drop index (NBPD) per cubic meter showed that the most NBPD is related to bean with 6853 Rials per cubic meters and the lowest amount is related to sunflower with a value equal to 2809 Rials per cubic meters.

Abstract

At the river catchments, different strategies at the whole or different parts of the basin can be applied for water resources management. One of these strategies is optimal water allocation and crop pattern. In this study, an optimization model for water allocation and cropping pattern is presented based on the cooperative game theory. To measure the performance of the developed model, the cultivated area of Ordibehesht Canal in the Doroodzan irrigation network has been studied. First, using a fuzzy model and considering the fuzzy coefficients values in the objective function and constraints, the optimal crop pattern and allocated water has been determined for each crop. Second, benefits of stakeholder’s coalitions have been determined by developing a cooperative game model and based on the structure and properties of the irrigation water distribution network and water rights of each part. Then, the total net benefit has been reallocated to the different stakeholder in a rational and equitable way using Least Core games. The results show that by allocating more water to the sectors with more potential production, more profits are generated and water productivity increases. For example when players cooperate together and form the grand coalition, the net benefit increases from 8.906 billion Tomans to 9.724 billion Tomans that show an increase in the economic productivity of water.

Abstract

The application of simulation-optimization models is a valuable tool for selecting the appropriate cropping pattern. The main objective of this research is to develop a two-objective simulation-optimization model to determine the pattern of cultivation and water allocation. The model performs the optimization with the multi-objective metamorphic algorithm (MOALO) after simulating different states of the cultivation pattern. The decision variables including land and water allocated to ten-day periods of plant growth were designed in a way that the minimum utilization of water resources and economic maximization were identified as target functions. The developed model was used to simulate and optimize the cultivation pattern with an area of 5500 hectares and water allocation of Semnan plain with renewable water at the rate of 60.8 million cubic meters. Harvesting scenarios of 80 (GW80) and 100 (GW100) percent of renewable groundwater and scenarios of change in existing cropping pattern of 30 (AC30) and 60 (AC60) percent were considered and each scenario was simulated with the MOALO algorithm. Optimization using the proposed model in four scenarios improved the water and economic objective functions compared to the initial simulation performance. The results showed that the four proposed scenarios were obtained by minimizing the water objective function and maximizing the economic objective function relative to the current situation (simulation). In general, the proposed model had a good performance despite its simplicity, which is a specialized tool to optimize the crop pattern with water allocation.

Abstract

In the present study, a model was developed using a system dynamics approach to simulate and optimize the profitability of crops of the Jofeyr (Isargaran) Irrigation and Drainage Network located in Khuzestan Province. To validate the results, the statistical indicators of root mean square error (RMSE), standard error (SE), mean biased error (MBE), and determination coefficient (R2) were used. To validate the simulation results of the benefit-cost ratio, the values of these indicators were obtained 0.25, 0.19, 0.005, and 0.96, respectively. Then, to determine the optimal cultivated area of the network and increase the profitability, the cropping pattern was determined both non-stepwise and stepwise in 2013 to 2017 cropping years. In the non-stepwise, the cultivated area of each crop changed from zero to 2 times of current situation. In stepwise, due to social and cultural conditions of inhabitants, this change was slow and 10% of the current situation every year. The analysis of the results showed the success of the model in optimizing and achieving the desired goals and the total benefit-cost ratio increased in all years both non-stepwise and stepwise. For example, in 2017 compared to 2016, production costs decreased by 7.1 percent and sales prices increased by 5.8 percent, and increased the benefit-cost in 2017 compared to the previous year. The results showed that the present model has good accuracy in simulating and optimizing the irrigation network, its cropping pattern, and defining other scenarios.

Abstract

One of the strategies for agricultural development is the optimal use of irrigation and drainage networks, which will lead to higher productivity and environmental protection. The present study used the system dynamics approach to develop a model for simulating the cultivated area of the Shahid Chamran irrigation and drainage network located in Khuzestan province by considering environmental issues. Limit test and sensitivity analysis were used for model validation. The results showed the proper performance of the model and the logical relationship between its parameters. Also, the cropping pattern of the network was determined in two modes of non-stepwise and stepwise changes to determine the optimal cultivated area of the Shahid Chamran network with environmental objectives and minimize the amount of salt from drains. The results showed that the amount of optimized output salt from the network has decreased in both non-stepwise and stepwise changes compared to the existing situation in the region. The total output salt in the current situation, from 2013 to 2017, was obtained at 2799, 2649, 2749, 2298, and 2004 tons.day-1, respectively, in the stepwise changes, are 2739, 2546, 2644, 2223, and 1952 tons.day-1, and finally, in the non-stepwise changes, are 2363, 2309, 2481, 2151, and 1912 tons.day-1. The results showed that the non-stepwise changes due to considered limitations have been more successful in reducing output salt than the stepwise changes. The analysis of the results showed the model's success in optimizing and achieving the desired goals. The results showed that the present model has good accuracy in simulating and optimizing the irrigation network, cropping pattern, and defining other scenarios.
