Abstract

Urmia Lake, located in north-west of Iran, has been exposed to various threats such as drought, construction of dams, land use changes and increased global temperature. Due to the importance of Urmia Lake, it is feasible to conduct different kinds of studies to identify the problems of its watershed. The main objective of this study was to evaluate SWAT program’s ability to simulate runoff in Urmia Lake watershed with an area of 52000 km2. The model was run for the 1980-1997 period. Calibration and validation periods were from 1980 to 1991 and from 1992 to 1997, respectively. The results of calibration for 10% and 85% of hydrometric stations were very good and suitable, respectively. Also, validation results for 25% and 45% of hydrometric stations were very good and suitable, respectively. These results show the high ability of SWAT model to simulate discharges in Urmia Lake watershed. Moreover, some factors influencing inflow to the lake in recent years were evaluated. The outcomes revealed that recent changes (dam cconstructions, climate change and land use change) in the watershed have caused inflow volume to the lake to decrease by 80%. So, if natural management conditions had prevailed in the watershed, the Lake’s conditions would have been much better.

Abstract

Accurate estimation of ET0 in any region is very important. The aim of this study is to compare and calibrate the 20 empirical methods of estimating evapotranspiration (ET0) based on three categories in monthly timescale at the Urmia Lake watershed. These categories are: 1) temperature-based models (Hargreaves (HG), Thornthwaite (TW), Blaney-Criddle (BC), Linacre (Lin)), 2) radiation-based model (the Doorenbos-Pruitt (DP), Priestly-Taylor (PT), Makkink (Mak), Jensen-Haise (JH), Turc (T), Abtew (A), McGuinness-Bordne (MB)) and 3) mass transfer-based model (Meyer (M), Dalton (D), Rohwer (R), Penman (P), Brockamp-Wenner (BW), Mahringer (Ma), Trabert (Tr), WMO and Albrecht (AL)). For this purpose, the information of 10 synoptic meteorological stations during the period of 1986-2010 was used. Results from the above mentioned methods were compared with the output of the FAO Penman-Monteith (PMF-56) method. Performance of the methods evaluated using the R2, RMSE, MBE and MAE statistics. The best and worst methods of each category were determined for the study area. The best methods of each category were calibrated for the area under study. Results indicated that there is a significant difference between the results of selected methods of each category and the PMF-56 method. Performance of the selected methods remarkably increased after calibration. Among the temperature-based group, the HG method having the median R2 value of 0.9597 was recognized as the best method. After calibration the medians of RMSE, MBE, and MAE were 72.09, 3.14 and 10.70 mm/ month, respectively. After HG, the Lin and BC found to be the best second and third methods in the study area. The TW showed Large error, therefore, it was not a suitable method for ET0 estimation in study area. Among the radiation-based group, the DP model was selected as the best method in the study area. Furthermore, the median of R2 values was 0.982. In this method, the medians of RMSE, MBE and MAE after calibration were 7.89. -0.62 and 6.03 mm/month, respectively. Following DP, the PT method was recognized as the 2nd best one. The methods namely M, JH, T, A and MB were put in the 3rd to seventh rank of the radiation category. Finally, among the mass transfer-based group, having R2=0.8945, the Meyer method was selected as the best method of this group for the study area. In the mentioned method (after calibration) the medians of RMSE, MBE, and MAE were 21.8, -8.7 and 17.3 mm per month, respectively. From mass transfer based group, the D method was found as the second best method in the study area. The methods namely R, P, BW, Ma, Tr, WMO and A were ranked 3rd to 7th, respectively. In general, the performance of radiation based methods was superior than others in Urmia Lake basin. Temperature based methods and mass transfer based methods were ranked second and third, respectively. Further examination of the performance resulted in the following rank of accuracy as compared with the PMF-56: DP (Radiation based), HG (Temperature based) and Meyer (Mass transfer). In general, it can be concluded that after calibration the DP method is suitable to estimate reference crop evapotranspiration among 20 selected methods in the Urmia Lake basin.

Abstract

The irrigation and drainage network of Zarrinehroud with an area of 65,000 hectares is the most important network of Lake Urmia basin, with the direct link to the lake. With the current crisis in the lake, an assessment of the existing network's performance is essential in the Urmia Lake Rescue Program. The purpose of this study was, therefore, to evaluate the transmission, distribution, and utilization efficiency and irrigation efficiency at the surface of the network. Three products were selected from the cultivar with the highest crop area (10% beet, 22% and 22%, and 38% wheat). The dominant method of irrigation was surface irrigation. At the network level, soil moisture in the field before and after irrigation, soil physical and hydraulic properties and water use volume for irrigation were measured. The results showed  that the average transmission efficiency in canals with the concrete coating of the network was about 79%, which was  in the range of 33% (in the  smaller channels) to 100% (in the  larger channels). The water distribution efficiency in the network was, on average, 76%, varying from 50% to 100%. Water use efficiency in the fields based on soil moisture balance analysis varied from 41% in the sandy loam soils to 66% for the clay texture. Based on the analysis of the data on the amount of harvest, production costs and product sales price, the water use efficiency (in kilograms of product per cubic meter of water used) varied from 0.4 for the  elderly hay to 5.1 for the  sugar beet. The amount of water used in this network (in Rials per cubic meter of water consumption) was between 2740 for alfalfa aged over 10 years and 6900 for wheat. It can be concluded that in the case of water constraints, wheat, sugar beet and alfalfa could be the most economic cultivar, respectively.

Abstract

In this study, in order to analyze the trends of annual precipitation, the information from 21 synoptic meteorological stations located in the Urmia Lake basin in a 30-year time period (1986-2015) was used. For this purpose, the Sequential Mann-Kendall test was used. The date of sudden change (if exist) in the precipitation time series of each station was identified. Significance of the trend in each of the time series and its direction (decrease or increase) in each of the stations were tested at 0.05 level. The results showed that 10 out of the 21 stations had a significant decreasing trend. Three stations (Sarab, Bostanabad and Sardasht) had significant increasing trends. Precipitation trends of eight stations were insignificant. Also, the study of sudden breaking points in the annual rainfall time series of the selected stations revealed that about 57.143 percent of the stations (12 stations) showed a significant sudden change in their annual rainfall series. In other words, more than half of the selected stations exhibited a   sudden change in their time series. The date of the sudden change of precipitation in eight stations (namely, Bonab, Sarab, Urmia, Oshnavieh, Kahrizi, Miyandoab, Bokan and Saghez) belonged to the middle part of the time series (i.e. 1996-2005). The sudden change date  of t hree stations (namely, Sardasht, Nagade and Tekab) belonged to the first decade of time series (i.e. 1986-1995) and only the sudden change date of  one station (namely, Maragheh) belonged to the last decade of time series (i.e. 2006-2015).

Abstract

Regionalization is one of the useful tools for carrying out effective analyses in regions lacking data or with having only incomplete data. One of the regionalization methods widely used in the hydrological studies is the clustering approach. Moreover, another effective factor on clustering is the degree of importance and participation level for each of these attributes. In this study, it was tried to use a broad range of attributes to compare their performance in regionalization. Then, according to the importance and role of each attribute in regionalization, the appropriate weight for each of the attributes in each category was determined using the principal component analysis (PCA) method, and the effect of this weighting in forming the homogenous regions was investigated by the Ward's clustering method. In this regard, the maximum 24-hour rainfall data of 63 meteorological stations located in Urmia Lake Basin (ULB) was used in this study during a time period of 30 years (1979-2008). Furthermore, seven categories of attributes were defined in order to regionalize the rainfall. The results showed that by considering different attributes and combining them with each other, a different clustering is obtained in each category in terms of the number of clusters and stations. Among seven categories of attributes, it was found that the geographical and climatic-geographical categories of attributes showed a more appropriate clustering over the ULB. Additionally, the weighting of attributes could have more effect on improving homogeneity and forming the independent clusters in most cases in terms of the scattering of station and how to locate over the basin.

Abstract

Soil pollution by heavy metals is a serious environmental problem that threatens the human health. The present study was carried out to investigate and detect the contamination of heavy metals of arsenic, copper, lead, zinc and iron due to human and natural activities in the sediment of lake bed and the surface soils of the eastern part of Urmia Province, West Azarbaijan Province. A total of 20 soil samples and surface deposition from the depths of 0 to 30 cm were collected randomly from the studied areas. After preparing the samples, extraction was carried out to determine the concentration of the heavy metals in the soil by using hydrochloric acid and nitric acid, and the total concentration of metals was measured using ICP-OES. The results of the calculation of the contamination factor showed that copper, iron, zinc and lead in the class of low and medium pollution and arsenic in 65.5% of the samples were very high in the class. The high concentrations of copper, lead and zinc contamination in the margin of the city and the contamination of arsenic in the lake bed were observed. The analysis of the contamination factor maps and contamination index with land use and geological map showed that copper, lead and zinc were mostly affected by human activities and arsenic influenced by the maternal materials in the region.
