Abstract

As there are some health and environmental concerns about wastewater, dewatered sludge, increase in green waste, and restricted legislation about burning them outdoors, environmental health engineers are investigating to find a simple, cost effective and efficient method. This is aimed to have healthy, safe and sustainable disposal of such materials. Co-composting of sludge and green waste is a newly developed process which can help us to achieve this goal. This study was to investigate the most suitable ratio of dewatered sludge to green waste from Chonibieh wastewater treatment plant in Ahvaz, Iran, and assess the feasibility of co-composting of this waste. So, dewatered sludge was composted with green waste as a bulking agent in three different ratios (1:1 ,2:1 ,3:1 : green waste: dewatered sludge W:W). Then composting proceeded in pilot vessels (M1, M2, M3) for 23 days. The C/N ratio, the percentage of total nitrogen, phosphorus, total organic carbon, humidity and pH were tested in certain periods and compared with the national standards. This study showed that in M1, M2, M3 pilots, all parameters (except for total phosphorus) including C/N ratio, percentage of total nitrogen and total organic carbon, humidity, pH could meet class 1 national standard in Iran. Moreover, this compost product could meet the EPA microbial standards, class A. So, the product of this compost process is completely stabilized and could be used in agricultural lands.

Abstract

Salinity and alkalinity decreases physical, chemical and biological quality of soils and as a result reduces crop yield. This study aims to evaluate spatial variability of soil salinity in Ahvaz using geostatistical approaches. Accordingly, 69 surface soil samples (0-10 cm) were collected and their electrical conductivities (EC) were measured in 1:1 soil: water extracts. The data were then analyzed using ordinary kriging (OK), log-normal kriging (LOK) and indicator kriging (IK) interpolation techniques to produce soil salinity maps. Finally, the quality control of soil maps was performed by calculation of root mean square error (RMSE) and coefficient of determination (R2). The results indicated that due to the lowest RMSE and the highest R2 values, the LOK interpolation method is the best approach in mapping soil salinity in Ahvaz. The results also illustrated that based on defined threshold values (4, 8, 16, and 32 dS m-1) the indicator kriging methods have been able to show risk of soil salinity in the area. Based on this, most of the area is covered by soils with salinity higher than 4 dS m-1. Evaluation of final soil maps showed that the highest concentrations of salts are related to the western and southwestern parts of Ahvaz city. In contrast, the lowest amounts of salinity were found in Eastern and Northern parts of the city.

Abstract

Dust deposited on the leaves of trees can be effectively used as the monitors of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The dust deposited on the leaves can be used as an appropriate index for evaluating PAHs in the atmosphere. This research was conducted to determine the origin and health risk assessment of PAHs accumulated on the leaves of trees in the city of Ahvaz. For this purpose, samples were taken at leaves on 10 points with different land uses including industrial, recreational, high-traffic and residential ones. After preparation, to determine the type and concentration of PAHs, the compounds were analyzed by GC-MS. The results showed that 15 types of PAHs had been identified from 16 important compounds identified by EPA in the dust samples. The concentration of compounds was the range of 3.3-110 microgram per kilogram. The maximum and minimum of PAHs carcinogenic in particles trapped on leaves were in the Kut-Abdolah with 530 ppb and Shahrvand Park Station with 5.13 ppb, respectively. Also, the average relative of LMW/HMW in the aromatics contained in the deposition of particles on trees was 0.5; further the analysis of the main components of aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) showed that there was  no specific source for these compounds in Ahvaz, and these compounds could be from fossil fuels, urban traffic, natural gas,   generally showing a pyrogenic origin.
