Abstract

In order to determine the effects of number of irrigations on stages of development, yield, and yield components of cumin, an experiment was conducted in 1993 - 94 growing season with a randomized complete block design and four replications. The location of the experiment was Isfahan University of Technology Research Station in Shervedan Field. The irrigation treatments were: I1- Irrigation after planting I2- Irrigation after planting and at the stage of full standing of plants I3- Irrigation after planting, full standing of plants, and anthesis and I4- Irrigation after planting, full standing of plants, anthesis, and beginning of grain filling stage. The stages of development (from emergence to anthesis) occurred simultaneously in all treatments. However, the water deficit in I1 and I2 caused the plants to reach their physiological maturity 5 days sooner than the other two treatments. The time intervals between anthesis and physiological maturity in I4 and I3 treatments were 12 days and 5 days longer than those in the other two treatments, respectively. The grain yield of I1 and I2 were approximately 60% of I3 and no significant difference was observed between the grain yields of I1 and I2 treatments, nor between I3 and I4 treatments. The grain yields in I3 and I4 treatments were about 1742 and 1800 Kg/ha, respectively. The number of umbels per plant, the most important grain yield component, was greater in I3 and I4 than the other two irrigation regimes, but the number of seeds per umbel and 1000-seed weight of I3 and I4 were lower than that in I1 and I2 treatments.

Abstract

In order to find suitable cultivar and N-topdress rates in corn planted after wheat harvest, a field experiment was conducted in Isfahan University of Technology Experiment Farm located at Shervedan, Falavarjan in 1994. The experiment design was a split plot with a randomized complete block arrangement and four replications. Main plots were four N-topdress rates (0, 90, 180, and 270 kg/ha) and the subplots were three corn hybrids (S.C.I08, S.C.301, and D.C.370). N-topdress rates had no effect on the stages of plant development (50% emergence, transition, pollination and physiological maturity). Also there were no significant effects on the number of leaves per plant, LAI, plant height and plant dry weight measured at pollination stage for different N-topdress rates. As expected, plant development stages differed among hybrids except that of time until 50% emergence. Differences in the number of leaves per plant, LAI, plant height and dry weight of plant measured at pollination stage were highly significant among hybrids. D.C. 370 had the highest values for all of these characteristics. Dry matter accumulation during growing season increased as the N-topdress rates were increased for the hybrids. Also N-topdress rates x hybrid interaction was significant for biological yield. Grain yield, number of seeds per ear, 100-seed weight and biological yield were affected by N-topdress rates and hybrid. Higher grain yield of D.C. 370 can be attributed to greater number of seeds per ear. The results of this study suggest that D.C. 370 with 90 kg/ha N-topdress rate can be used after wheat harvest in Isfahan.

Abstract

In this study, an experiment was carried out to determine the effects of 6 culture media (sand, perlite, vermiculite, Sand + Perlite, Sand + Vermiculite, Vermiculite + Perlite) on the rooting of single-bud cuttings of seven grape cultivars (Rishbaba, Hosseiny, Dashgarah, Ghiziluzum, Teberzeh, Bidaneh Sefid, Sahebi). All the cuttings were prepared from one-year old branches. Statistical analyses of the data obtained from the examination of the roots revealed significant discrepancies in the rooting of different cultivars' cuttings, media and media-cultivar interactions in terms of rooting percentage, fresh weight of roots and the ratio of dry to fresh weight of roots. The highest rooting performance in terms of the above parameters was observed in Hosseiny cultivar while the lowest obtained in Teberzeh cultivar. Vermiculite and perlite + Vermiculite were found to be the most suitable media for rooting of cuttings. According to the media-cultivar interactions, high rooting of Hosseiny, Dashgarah, and Ghiziluzum was observed in vermiculite and high rooting of Rishbaba, Teberzeh, Bidaneh Sefid and Sahebi was obtained in perlite + vermiculite.

Abstract

Sustainability has become a part of the language of almost all development projects. Although, in many instances it has been overused and misused, attaining sustainability in agricultural development is always one of our concerns. This paper aims (1) to clarify and describe the core beliefs and values underlying the two opposing world views of agriculture, i.e., “conventional agricultural paradigm” and “sustainable agricultural paradigm” (2) to describe an instrument developed to measure the basic beliefs and values assumed to constitute the two competing paradigms (3) to measure the adherence of extensionists and researchers of the Ministry of Agriculture towards sustainable agriculture and (4) to compare the adherence to alternative paradigms against conventional agricultural paradigms of Iranian groups with permaculture groups and agricultural chemical dealers of USA. The instrument was used in a nation wide survey. A two-stage random sample was used. In the first stage, 11 provinces were randomly selected and then in each of the selected provinces a simple random sample of extension agents, extension experts and agricultural researchers were selected for the study. The findings indicated that there is no significant difference among agricultural researchers, extension agents and extension experts in their mean endorsement score of sustainable agriculture. Data from a similar study in the USA were used to provide a means of comparison. Two extreme groups were selected, permaculture group with strong sustainable agricultural score and agricultural chemical dealers with lowest mean scores of sustainable agriculture. The mean scores of sustainable agriculture adherence of three Iranian groups were considerably lower than that of the USA permaculture group. However, there was no significant difference between three Iranian groups and USA agricultural chemical dealers which indicates low adherence of Iranian sample to sustainable agriculture. Considering the challenges Iranian farmers face for food production in the next decade and the role of the Ministry of Agriculture personnel, recommendations are put forth for changing knowledge, attitudes and skills of agricultural researchers and extensionists.

Abstract

Immature embryo culture response of 28 durum wheat (Triticum turgidum var. durum) cultivars was studied using MS medium in Tissue Culture Laboratory of College of Agriculture, Isfahan University of Technology. Donor plants were grown in a recirculating hydroponic system and pots in a greenhouse. Regenerated immature embryos were recorded at 2, 4, 8 and 16 days after inoculation. Assessment of durum wheat cultivars for immature embryo culture was conducted by percentage and rate of regenerated embryo, using a split plot design arranged in completely randomized design with 5 replications. The analysis of variances showed that there were highly significant differences among cultivars for plant regeneration capacity. The highest potential and rate of embryo regeneration (two days after inoculation) were observed in “Shahivandi” which is a native cultivar of west Iran. “Awl1/Sbl4” with a mean of 48.5%, “Hagla” and “Ofen/Kil” with a mean of 80% have the poorest and the best mean of regeneration during the recording period, respectively. The high regeneration potential is important in view of reducing the time constrain and somaclonal variation in a breeding program.

Abstract

The effectiveness of Buprofezin (40% SC) and Pyriproxifen (10% EC) on the mortality of nymphal stages and fecundity of cottony cushion scale was investigated under glasshouse conditions. The LC50 of IGRs was also determined for the first nymphal stage. Two applications were conducted at intervals of 1 day prior to introduction of crawlers and 42 days after infestation. The results indicated that Buprofezin was superior to Pyriproxifen in suppressing the growth and development of crawlers. The mortality of first instars was determined 28 days after the first application. Although the total mortality of second instars due to Pyriproxifen was higher than that by Buprofezin, but the cummulative mortality of 1000 ppm treatment was estimated to be 100% in both experiments after 42 days. The effect of Buprofezin on incomplete molting of nymphs and its ovicidal activity showed a decreasing rate in third instar nymphs survival and fecundity of cottony cushion scale in relation to different concentrations of the IGRs, but it never reached 100%. Meanwhile the 1000 ppm concentration of Pyriproxifen in the same treatments brought about complete mortality to third instar nymphs and inhibited adult and egg formation due to imbalanced juvenile hormone activity. However in 1 ppm concentration of Pyriproxifen, a noticeable increase in fecundity of cottony cushion scale was observed.

Abstract

The reproductive development stage is a crucial stage in plant life to study the potential of plant yield. Salt tolerance in this stage is desirable to obtain a stable and high yield. A Cynodon dactylon population from America (Cyn3, London Univ. Collection), was suitable to study the detached immature inflorescence in booting stage on liquid medium. The detached inflorescenes were cultured on a liquid medium prepared with or without various supplements of NaCl (0 to 2%) and kinetin concentrations. The sequence of morphological events of spike development in vitro, and the effects of NaCl on spikelet opening, embryo sac growth, fertilization and caryopsis development were studied. The liquid medium supplemented with 10-7 M kinetin resulted in natural caryopsis development. Supplementing NaCl to the liquid medium had deteriorating effects on the embryo sac development and resulted in the production of abnormal caryopses. The abnormal caryopses were smaller in diameter with a more fragile pericarp. However, a small number of spikelets grown in liquid medium, supplemented with low salt concentration up to 5%, produced normal caryopses and germinated well on soaked filter paper in petri dishes at appropriate conditions.

Abstract

Studies on sustainable agricultural have not paid adequate attention to farmers' behaviour regarding sustainability. The objectives of this research were: 1) to determine the relationship between socio-economic and farming factors with “sustainable agricultural knowledge”, 2) to predict “sustainable agricultural knowledge” based on socio-economic and farming factors, and 3) to determine the relationship between sustainable agricultural knowledge and sustainability of farming systems. A survey research was used with a multi-stage cluster sampling technique to collect data for the study. In the first stage, 39 villages were selected in Fars Province. Then 200 wheat producers were randomly selected in these villages for interview. The findings indicated that there was a significant and positive correlation between “sustainable agricultural knowledge” with level of literacy, achievement motivation, amount of total wheat production, technical knowledge about wheat production, economic condition, wheat farming model, amount of supervision by Agricultural Service Centers, and educational services provided by extension agents. Stepwise multiple regression indicated that technical knowledge about wheat production, achievement motivation, type of land revenue system, level of literacy and wheat farming model (independent variables) explained more than 50 percent of variability in “sustainable agricultural knowledge”. There was no significant correlation between “sustainable agricultural knowledge” and “sustainability of farming systems”. Possible reasons for this lack of relationship have been discussed. Based on the findings of this study, recommendations are provided towards achieving a more sustainable agricultural system.

Abstract

Agricultural colleges have three main objectives: training, research, and offering public services. Transfer and dissemination of agricultural knowledge and technology is the best example of universities’ services. In this regard, agricultural extension has the important role of linking agricultural colleges with agricultural industry. The linkage between extension and agricultural colleges is effective in promoting the two organizations and ultimately enhancing the development of agriculture. Therefore, the significance of this linkage has been emphasized by many program planners as well as researchers.

This descriptive research was conducted to analyze the perception of the faculty members at Agricultural College of Shiraz University and the extension agents and specialists of Fars Province. A theoretical framework was developed based on a “communication model”, and forty-seven factors effective in establishing and promoting the linkage between research and extension were recognized. The results revealed that the most important factor in research-extension linkage is “the degree of contact and knowledge of local agricultural affairs by researchers”. The paper concludes by providing recommendations that could be used to strengthen the interaction between research and extension institutions.

Abstract

Potato is a valuable plant as a source of nutrition and as an industrial product. The modification and breeding of potato plants are very difficult, or even impossible, via the conventional plant breeding programs. However, plant biotechnology and tissue culture are reliable methods which can produce plant material for gene transformation using Agrobacterium as a vector. In this study, one-, two-, and three-step methods of plant regeneration from stem culture of potato cv. Delaware were tested. Among these only the one-step procedure using TDZ, a synthetic cytokinin, was the best for rapid plant regeneration. In this culture medium, several shoot buds and shoots were regenerated from stem culture, while the other methods using a culture medium supplemented with BAP, NAA, zeatin, 2ip, IAA produced white and green callus. Morphology and chromosome number of all regenerated plants were similar to the original plants. The results showed that the regeneration system was suitable for cv. Delaware and that the culture conditions prevented genetic variation of the regenerated plants.

Abstract

Solarization of field soil through mulching with transparent polyethylene sheets alone and in integration with farm yard manure (40 T/ha) and/or metalayl (25 kg/ha) during summer 1994-95 for five weeks in Isfahan resulted in an increase in temperature of 10 °C (± 1) and moisture preservation of up to 82%. Solarization effectively reduced foot-rot of cucumber (Phytophthora drechsleri) in the above treatments up to 88%, 96% and 95%, respectively.

Solarization, farm yard manure and their integration reduced the infection of Meloidogyne javanica up to 50%, 57% and 83% while plant parasitic nematodes were also reduced to 72%, 75% and 86%, respectively. The populations of free living nematodes increased only in farm yard manure and in integration with solarization by 30% and 53%, respectively.

Solarization effectively reduced the populations of almost all weeds by around 100%, except for Cyperus rotundus and Sonchus asper which were reduced by 59% and 44%, respectively.

Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate the responses of Iranian commercial genotypes of maize (hybrids and their inbred lines) to callus induction and plant regeneration, using mature embryos. Twenty five genotypes comprising of 12 inbred lines, 11 single cross hybrids, 1 double cross hybrid and 1 composite cultivar were used. Mature embryos of the genotypes were plated on MS and N6 media. Callus induction rates were evaluated using relative growth rate of callus (RGR), callus fresh weight (CFW), callus dry weight (CDW) and callus growth rate (CGR).

The results indicated that genotypes highly varied in both callus induction and plant regeneration. IL8 inbred line, SC7 (IL4×IL8) and SC9 (IL6×IL10) hybrids had the highest callus production capacity (based on CFW and CDW), whereas the highest RGR and CGR were obtained for ILl inbred line and SC9 hybrid. The estimated heterosis based on superior parent showed the highest heterosis for CFW, CDW, RGR and CGR in SC9 hybrid. Genotype × medium interactions for CWD, RGR and CGR were significant. For instance, SC9 hybrid on MS medium and IL8 on N6 medium produced the highest CGR. There was a significant difference between the observation periods [8, 12, 16 and 20 days after planting (DAP)], so that CGR was the least at 8 DAP and increased gradually till 16 DAP, but declined afterward. CGR had a range of 0.51 in IL8 inbred line to 0.74 in SC9 hybrid. Comparisons of the genotype for plant regeneration percent indicated that ILl and IL10 inbred lines as well as SC2 and SC4 single cross hybrids had the highest regeneration rates. Considering plant regeneration as a critical and genotypic dependent factor, it can be concluded that ILl and IL10 inbred as well as SC4 (IL4×IL5, ‘single cross 301’), SC2 (IL2×IL3, ‘single cross 704’) and SC7 hybrids are recommended for use in tissue culture-based breeding programs in maize.

Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate the response of 18 rice (Oryza sativa L.) genotypes to callus induction and plant regeneration from immature embryo culture, using three media (MS, LS and N6). To evaluate callus induction rate, the following criteria were used: callus diameter, callus fresh weight and callus dry weight. Percentage of callus water content was also measured. After transferring the produced calli from the induction media to a regeneration medium (MSR), percentage of plant regeneration was evaluated.

A highly significant difference was observed among genotypes for both callus induction and plant regeneration (P<0.01). In callus induction phase, “Nemat” and “Cheram-2” cultivars were superior for callus diameter, having 4.83 and 4.6 mm callus diameter, respectively. “Nemat”, “Cheram-2”, “Sepidrood” and “Taroum” cultivars as well as “33IRCTN91” and “IRFAON-30” lines were significantly superior to other cultivars for callus fresh weight. Among the genotypes “Nemat”, “Zayandehrood”, “33IRCTN91” had the highest percentage of callus water contents. Based on plant regeneration, “33IRCTN91” line and “Anbarbo”, “Nemat”, “Cheram-2” and “Taroum” cultivars showed highest rate of plant regeneration from callus. Significant differences were observed among media. While MS and N6 media did not showed any significant differences for callus diameter, callus fresh weight and rate of plant regeneration, they were superior to LS medium (P<0.01). According to percentage of callus water content, MS and LS media ranked the best and the most inferior medium, respectively. In the present study, MS and N6 media were considered as suitable in vitro culture media of rice immature embryos. Among genotypes, “Nemat” and “Cheram-2” cultivars were ranked the best for both callus induction and plant regeneration. Also, the used Japonica rice cultivars were superior for percentage of plant regeneration. The calculated correlation coefficients between traits showed a non-significant correlation between callus induction and plant regeneration, which, in turn, indicated that these traits were independent.

Abstract

The effect of soil salinity on plant growth is due to two factors, namely, increase in osmotic pressure of soil solution and the ionic composition of salt. The present experiment was conducted to obtain information about the response of pistachio (Pistacia vera L.) to salinity and ionic composition of the salt. Salinity with different relative composition of sodium chloride and sodium sulfate were applied to two pistachio cultivars, Fandoghi and Badami. Yield (dry matter of leaf and shoots produced in each pot) of plants were compared by the analysis of variances method of F and Duncan tests.

The yields of the cultivars were significantly different (P≤0.01) with Fandoghi cultivar producing less shoots and leaf and, consequently, lower total dry matter. Increasing the salinity level decreased the plant growth. Leaves were more sensitive to salinity. Increasing the ratio of sulfate salt alleviated the depressive effect of salinity such that when salinity was 100% sodium sulfate, the dry matter yield of shoots was 1.5 times and that of leaf was 1.7 times higher compared to the treatment where salinity was 100% sodium chloride. Leaf was more sensitive than shoots and, therefore, it showed a more positive response to chloride decreasing.

Abstract

The main objective of the present study is to analyze the effects of agricultural crop insurance on farmers’ technical efficiency and risk attitude. Required data came from questionnaires that were completed by the Institute for Planning and Agricultural Economics of the Ministry of Agriculture. Farmers’ technical efficiency and attitude toward risk were estimated using stochastic frontier production function and equally likely certainty equivalent method for both insured and non-insured groups. Results revealed that effects of agricultural insurance on farmers’ technical efficiency were significantly positive in the three study regions.

Results of estimating risk aversion coefficients of study farmers showed a positive effect of insurance on risk aversion coefficients. However, this effect was significant only in two of the climatic regions under study.

Abstract

Effects of different levels of nitrogen fertilizer and cutting time of forage on grain and forage yield of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) Karoon cultivar was studied during 1995-1996 at Ramin Agricultural Research and Educational Center, University of Shahid Chamran, Ahwas, by using a split plot design in randomized complete block with 4 replications. Main plots were assigned to five levels of N fertilizer (45, 90, 135, 180 and 225 kg N/ha) as urea fertilizer and subplots to three cutting times (no cutting, cutting forage at early stem elongation without removing reproductive meristem and cutting forage in the middle of stem elongation with cut reproductive meristem).

The effects of N rates and cutting time on grain yield were significant. Maximum yield was obtained with 281.6 g/m2 when crop plants received 90 kg N/ha and cutting time at early stem elongation and minimum yield was obtained (158.2 g/m2) with 45 kg N/ha and cutting forage in the middle of stem elongation. Interactive effect of levels of N and cutting time on spike number per m2, grain number in spike and grain weight were significant. Among yield components, spike number and grain weight showed the highest sensitivity to both. Different levels of N increased forage protein concentration and protein yield significantly, but delay in cutting time decreased protein concentration and increased protein yield. Results indicated that high levels of N could not compensate for the delay in cutting time of forage for grain yield. It was concluded that application of 90 kg N/ha and cutting time in early stem elongation was preferable for grain and forage production as compared to other treatments.

Abstract

In this research, the presence of metalaxyl residues was studied in field-grown cucumber. Two different formulations of metalaxyl were used in the experiments. In the first experiment, cucumber plants were sprayed once and repeatedly by Ridomil-MZ 72 WP at 2.5 g/litre. In the second experiment, single and double applications of metalaxyl granule 5G were carried out at 5 g/m2. Leaves and fruits were sampled at different times after each treatment and analyzed for metalaxyl residues by HPLC.

In leaf samples from single sprayed plots, metalaxyl residues declined rapidly following the treatment and more than 50% of the residues disappeared in the first two days, whereas in the leaf from single granule-applied plants, the residues increased during the first three weeks and then declined. Metalaxyl residues in cucumber sampled from single sprayed-plots were at a high level during the first three days after the spray and declined below the MRL (0.5 mg/kg) on the 7th day. In granule-applied plots, the residues increased during the first 7 days and the level below the limit was recorded 20 days after application. Residual values for plants sprayed with suspension showed a faster dissipation rate than granulated treatment. Metalaxyl recovered after three times of spraying and two times of granular application did not show any toxic accumulation of residues in fruit.

Abstract

For Iranian fermented cheese processing and ripening, different lactic acid bacteria (LAB) that affect on the physicochemical properties and hence the organoleptic characteristics of the cheese is used. Determination of physicochemical changes of cheese, particularly, organic acids is of importance. In this study five cheese formulas with five different group of cheese starters were processed and ripened in 8% brine during two months at 12±1 °C. HPLC analysis of organic acids were accomplished, using SCR-101H column with U. V. detector at 214 nm and quantified with high purity standards concerning each organic acid recovery. Pyruvic, orotic, citric, propionic, lactic, butyric and acetic acids were analyzed after 1, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 days of processing and storage. Each determined organic acid exhibited a specific profile changes during cheese ripening.

Lactic acid was dominant organic acid in all samples. Total organic acids were increased significantly after 30 days of storage, but decreased up to the end of ripening. The profile changes of organic acids which was similar in all samples with different amounts related to dominant lactic acid with about 80-90% of the total organic acids. The aromatic mesophile group, CH-N-O1(including Lactococci and Leuconostocs) and Lactobacillus casei and also the mixed mesophiles plus thermophile starters group, CH-1 (including Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus salivarius ssp. thermophilus) caused a significant decrease in citric acid and increase in acetic and propionic acid in related cheese samples compared with other cheeses (P < 0.01). But cheese containing only thermophiles or the mixed thermophile and mesophile (code 54) revealed a significant increase in butyric acid. In all samples the changes in pyruvic acid content was irregular. The ripening period of cheese samples were determined by the stepwise regression analysis in relation to their exact amount of organic acids.

Abstract

In order to investigate the androgenic response of chickpea cultivars, two Iranian Chickpea cultivars, Pirooz and Karaj 12-60-31, were used in this study. After 7 to 10 days of cold pretreatment of flower buds, anther containing uninucleate stage of microspores were placed aseptically on MS medium supplemented with various combinations of growth regulators of 2,4-D (1,2 and 3 mg/l) and kinetin (0.1, 0.2 and 0.5 mg/l). Callus regeneration achieved using MS and modified Blayd’s media with various hormones and different sucrose concentrations. The results indicated that the callus initiation was significantly affected by 2,4-D and kinetin concentrations, and that increasing these hormones reduced callus induction. The best response obtained on media with the lowest concentration levels of 2,4-D and kinetin (1 and 0.2 mg/l, respectively). A highly significant genotypic effect and a genotype  2,4-D interaction were detected, which proved that Pirooz response was the best. Callus differentiation and organogensis occurred in MS medium supplmented with NAA, BA and 3% sucrose. Mature embryos also obtained in modified Blayd’s plus 0.5 mg/l kinetin and 10% sucrose. Cytological studies revealed the presence of haploid cells with chromosome variation in the anther derived callus. Therefore, optimizing the hormone levels of different basal media with a particular sucrose cocentration may improve haploid regeneration in chickpea. It seems a further study should be carried out to characterize calli from induction to regeneration and to determine the effect of cold pretreatment, the results of which could be used to improve anther culture response of chickpea.
