Abstract

A 46-day feeding trial was conducted with rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) to examine the effects of partial substitution of plant protein sources with fish meal in diets. Three different sources of plant protein including soybean, sunflower and cottonseed meals were substituted by fish meal at four levels of 10, 20, 30 and 40 percentages. Each diet was assigned to triplicate groups of fish in a completely randomized design as a 3×4 factorial arrangement, with a control diet. Seven hundred and eighty fish were used in this trial. Twenty fish were randomly assigned to each of 39 pens and were acclimated in these pens to the experimental conditions two weeks before treatments began. This substitution caused no significant differences in all the criteria measured with control diet. Fish fed diets of 30 and 40 percent soybean meal substitution showed greater weight gain and better growth performance, lower FCR and higher PER values in comparison with the fish receiving other diets, although the differences were not significant. Irrespective of substitution levels, comparison of fish fed by three different sources of plant protein in their diets showed that the fish fed diet containing sunflower meal had significantly (p<0.0l) lower final mean weight and growth performance, higher FCR and lower PER than the fish receiving soybean and cottonseed meal diets. Relative liver weight of fish receiving soybean meal diets was significantly (p<0.0l) higher than those fed with cottonseed meal diets, but the difference was not significant when compared with the fish fed with the sunflower meal diets. Partial replacement of cottonseed meal resulted in a higher energy availability to fish and also better performance of fish. However, diets containing soybean meal showed not much effects on performance of rainbow trout. These results indicate that cottonseed and soybean meals can be recommended as a suitable and fish meal-sparing ingredient in diets for rainbow trout.

Abstract

Growth and grain yield of irrigated barley cultivars (Valfajr, Binam and Raihaneh) was investigated at 4 sowing dates (6, 22 Oct. and 14, 20 Nov.) in Karaj region. The effect of sowing date, genotype and their interaction on grain yield were statistically significant. Early and late sowing enhanced cold damage. However, the damage was more in late sowings. It was estimated that the optimum sowing date would be about 50 days (600 GDD) prior to freeze-up and maximum cold damage would occur when sowing was delayed until some 22 days (230 GDD) before freeze-up but any more delay in sowing would cause less damage. Highest grain yield was obtained from Raihaneh at 22 Oct. sowing. Binam showed good yield stability and relatively high yield, especially in unfavorable sowing dates. In the relatively favorable sowing dates (6 and 22 Oct.), grain weight showed positive correlation with linear grain filling rate, storage and translocation of reserves. LAI, LAR, RGR, CGR and LAD of each cultivar were higher in the second sowing date compared to the first one. The “ratio of post anthesis growth to maximum TDM” showed a high correlation with the harvest index. Raihaneh was the highest cultivar in resistance to lodging, harvest index, storage and retranslocation of assimilates, and linear grain filling rate. It is suggested that at favorable sowing dates, Valfajr and Binam had source limitation or disturbed translocation and Raihaneh had sink limitation.

Abstract

Knowledge of the vegetative and reproductive characteristics of soybean cultivars with different growth habits and maturity groups is essential for the selection of a suitable variety as well as for providing optimum conditions for their growth. In 1994 in a field located in Kholenjan of Isfahan, Iran, nine indeterminate type cultivars belonging to different maturity groups, namely Williams, Wood Worth, Hack, Zane, Black Hawk, Bonus, Steel, S.R.F. and Harcor and one determinate cultivar belonging to maturity group III namely Hobbit, in a complete block design with four replications were evaluated. Indeterminate cultivars and higher maturity group cultivars produced more dry matter. On the whole, indeterminate cultivars with later maturity had longer main stem with more nodes, pods and grains. The determinate cultivar had more lateral branches, and more pods and grains in them but these traits did not show any specific trend in different maturity groups. Height of the first pod from ground surface in indeterminate cultivars was more than that of determinate cultivars. Number of pods per each node of main stem, number of grains per each pod of lateral branch and number of nodes per lateral branch showed no significant difference among cultivars. Classification of these cultivars based on the above characteristics showed that cultivars with different growth habits had basic differences and also that some cultivars showed some similarity to maturity groups which did not exist in the present study.

Abstract

To estimate heritability, and genetic and phenotypic relationships and also to study the effect of sex and rearing environment on body weight, weight gain, feed consumption and feed conversion coefficient, the data from 1200 pedigreed male and female chickens from three genetic groups including 90 sires were used. The included genetic groups were crosses of native chickens and an exotic breed (group A), native chickens which were selected for two generations on the basis of 8th week body weight (group B) and a control group of native chickens (group C). All the chicks were reared up to four weeks of age on the ground in separated pens according to their sire groups. In order to calculate feed conversion coefficient, 498 chicks were placed in individual cages during four to ten weeks of age. The results showed that the cross group (A) compared to the other two groups had a higher body weight at 2, 3, 6, 8 and 10 weeks of age. Weight gain, feed conversion coefficient and consumption at periods of 4-6, 6-8, 8-10 and 4-10 weeks were also higher in the cross group. Genetic groups B and C, in spite of better performance of group B for most of the traits, did not have any significant differences for the compared traits. Estimated heritabilities on the basis of sire variance component showed that these traits were medium to highly heritable. Estimated heritabilities for feed consumption at different ages ranged from 0.15 to 0.44 which at any age was lower than that estimated for feed conversion coefficient. Genetic and phenotypic correlations between growth traits were positive and, in most of the cases, high. Correlations between nutritional traits at different ages were variable.

Abstract

Limited time for crop residue decomposition and complete seedbed preparation in double-cropping necessitates reduced tillage which is associated with its shortcomings. Information about seedbed preparation aspects in double-cropping of wheat and mungbean in Isfahan is lacking. For this reason, the effects of various seedbed preparation methods on growth, seed yield and yield components of mungbean (experimental line 1-61-16) were studied in a wheat-mungbean double-cropping system during 1996 at the Agricultural Research Station, Isfahan University of Technology. Two residue management treatments (burned and nonburned) along with four tillage systems: moldboard plow, disk, khischee and no-till were laid out in a strip plot design within a randomized complete block design with four replications. Improved establishment and plant growth conditions associated with burning residue treatment significantly increased plant density, above ground plant weight, number of nodes per branch, plant height, number of pods per main stem and per square meter, number of seeds per pod on main stem and on branches, number of seeds per main stem, seed yield, biological yield and harvest index. Higher plant density in this treatment resulted in significant reduction in the number of branches and number of pods per branch. Desirable conditions for establishment and growth in disk and moldboard plow treatments significantly increased plant density, above ground plant weight, number of pods per main stem and per square meter, number of seeds per pod on main stem and on branches, number of seeds per main stem, seed yield, biological yield and harvest index. No-till treatment produced the least results in respect to the above traits. The results indicated that burning residues with disk tillage system might be an appropriate seedbed preparation method under conditions similar to this experiment.

Abstract

In vitro salt tolerance of 28 cultivars of durum wheat with native and exotic origins was investigated, using MS medium containing sodium chloride. The resulting calli were subjected to 8 salinity levels including 0, 0.3, 0.6, 0.9, 1.2, 1.5 and 1.8 percent NaCl (w/v). Donor plants of explant (immature embryo) were grown in a recirculating hydroponics and pots in a greenhouse as well as in the field. Assessment of calli was conducted after 0, 8 and 16 days after subculture of calli into the NaCl-contained medium. Callus growth rate, relative callus growth rate and percentages of callus necrosis were measured, using a 8 × 28 factorial experiment layout in a completely randomized design with 3 observations per treatment and 3 replications. Results of analysis of variances showed that among the criteria, relative growth rate of callus was the most reliable, while callus growth rate as not being quantitatively measured, was less devoted. Results of this study revealed that 'PI 40100' and 'Dipper-6' were superior genotypes for in vitro salt tolerance. The high relative callus growth rate and less callus necrosis of these cvs. may indicate their superior genetic potential for in vitro salinity tolerance.

Abstract

The present experiment evaluates the effects of some carbohydrate sources (corn, barley and millet) and the replacement of corn with different levels (0, 25, 50, 75, 100%) of barley and millet on the performance of common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.). In a completely randomized block design, 540 grower fish with an average body weight of 70 gr, were divided into 27 groups, 20 fish per group. Nine different diets were used and each diet was assigned to triplicate groups of fish for eight weeks.

Analyses of data showed that the replacement of corn by barley and millet resulted in a higher weight gain. The highest and lowest weight gains were observed with diets having 50 percent barley and 100 percent millet substitutions, respectively, although the differences with the control diet were not significant. Diets with 50 and 100 percent barley for corn substitutions showed a greater specific growth rate (SGR). As for the food conversion ratio (FCR), all the diets having barley and millet, irrespective of substitution levels, showed a better FCR relative to the control diet. However, the diet with 100 percent barley substitution had the best FCR, but no significant differences were observed (P>0.05) with the control diet. In general, the performance of barley was better than that of corn and millet, and millet was relatively better than corn. However, these results indicate that barley and millet can be suitable replacements for imported corn in diets used for common carp.

Abstract

An experiment was conducted in order to study the possibility of compensatory growth by changing dietary nutrients concentration in the female Arian broiler chicks using a completely randomized design by means of standard and diluted diets. By standard diet is meant diet recommended by Arian’s guide catalogue and by diluted diet is meant the diet used in Iran broiler farms. However, both diets contain the same nutrient/energy ratios. Chicks in the seven treatments received in their starter, grower and finisher stages standard and standard and standard, standard and diluted and diluted, diluted and standard and diluted, diluted and diluted and standard, diluted and standard and standard, diluted and diluted and diluted, standard and standard and diluted respectively. Furthermore each treatment contained three replicants and each replicant contained 30 chicks. This experiment was conducted in autumn using 630 female Arian broiler chicks for eight weeks.

It was concluded that weight gain of chicks receiving standard diets during all stages of their growing period was the same as the chicks receiving diluted diet during their starter period and standard diets during grower and finisher periods. Feed consumption and feed conversion ratio of these treatments were statistically lower than other treatment groups. Furthermore, production index and percentage of mortality was better than other treatment groups. Likewise, viscera% and abdominal fat% remained significantly constant in all treatment groups. But the cost of feed per unit of live body weight was lower in the treatment receiving diluted diets in all three stages of their growing period.

Abstract

The effect of N levels and planting densities on quantitative and qualitative characteristics of grain yield in grain sorghum (cv. Kimia) was studied in summer 1998 at Kushkak Agricultural Research Station, Shiraz University. The experiment was a spilt plot with 4 replications in which 4 levels of planting densities (7.7, 10, 15.4, 20 seeds m-2) were applied as main plots and 4 levels of N (0, 40, 80, 120 Kg N ha-1) as subplots.

N application rates up to 120 kg N ha-1 increased grain yield (7240 kg ha-1), but due to increased planting density (5336 kg ha-1) the highest yield obtained from 15 seeds m-2. Interaction of N and planting density was also significant. Application of 80 kg N ha-1 and highest planting density produced 8702 kg ha-1 of grain. Different grain yields in different levels of N and planting densities were due to increased number of grains per basic branches of panicle and increased number of panicle per m-2. The trend of variation of crop growth rates (CGR) was similar to the trend of grain yield. Nitrogen application increased grain protein contents but planting density had no significant effect on grain protein. Phenolic compounds (tannins) decreased with increasing N application and with decreasing planting density. A negative correlation was observed between increased N content and increased phenolic compounds.

Abstract

It is believed that various types of field bean, including pinto, white and red, differ in adaptability to high temperatures and may, thus, differ in response to delay in planting. In order to evaluate this response, an experiment was conducted during 1996 at the Agricultural Research Station, Isfahan University of Technology, using a randomized complete block design with split-plot layout. Main plots consisted of four planting dates (April 28, May 13 and 28 and June 13) and sub-plots included four genotypes of common bean (red bean, c.v. Naz pinto beans, experimental lines 11816 and 16157 and a white bean, experimental line 11805).

Number of branches per plant, number of pods per branch and per unit area, number of seeds per pod of main stem and branch, number of seeds per main stem, per branch and per unit area, 100-seed weight and seed yield significantly reduced, while harvest index significantly increased by delay in planting and consequent increases in temperature and reduction in time for growth. The lower harvest index obtained with early planting was the result of the lower efficiency of the produced vegetative growth due to the coincidence of seed filling period with high temperatures. Pinto bean line 11816 ranked the highest for number of branches per plant and harvest index among the genotypes evaluated and produced the highest seed yield (3030 kg ha-1). Although red bean Naz ranked the highest for number of pods and seed per main stem and per unit area, it had the lowest harvest index and 100-seed weight and, consequently, produced the least seed yield (2254 kg ha-1). The results obtained indicate that delay in planting adversely affects bean seed yield. Pinto bean line 11816 may have higher yield potential among the genotypes studied at all planting dates under conditions similar to the present experiment. No specific relationship was observed between apparent seed characteristics and plant tolerance to heat.

Abstract

The effect of different media including the growth regulators on somatic embryogenesis from Mexican lime was studied. The average embryo formation after 60 days from unfertilized ovules in different media was evaluated at 0 to 33.75%. The most effective hormone to stimulate embryogenesis was GA3 at 0.01 and 0.1 mg/l concentrations. Malt extract (ME) at 300 mg/l increased embryo formation, whereas at 1000 mg/l, it inhibited embryogenesis but produced embryogenic callus. Banzyl adenine (BA) at 0.1 and 0.01 mg/l concentrations had significant effects on embryogenesis, while embryo formation was inhibited at high concentrations. Embryo development in different media was also studied. The index of mean root length to mean stem length in the MT3 medium supplemented with 0.1 mg/l of GA3 was observed to be 1.22±0.22, which was regarded a suitable medium for embryo formation, embryo development and plantlet regeneration.

Abstract

In a completely randomized design (CRD) experiment with 6 treatments and 4 replicates per treatment, the effect of energy and protein dilution during 6-12 days of age was tested in broilers. Rice hull was used for dilution of energy and protein at levels of 0.05 (control), 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 percent. The metabolizable energy and crude protein content of the experimental diets were 3089, 2780, 2626, 2472, 2317 and 2163 KCal/kg and 21.45, 19.29, 18.23, 17.16, 16.10 and 15.02 percent, respectively. The results indicated that diet dilution at early age (6-12 days) increased feed consumption but energy and protein intake and weight gain were reduced. No significant differences in body weight were observed due to compensatory growth among treatments. After feed restriction, feed intake was lower for the birds receiving diluted diets as compared to control. Meanwhile feed efficiency somewhat improved among the birds fed with diluted diets, but the differences were not significant. Diet dilution had no significant effect on carcass and abdominal fat percentage at the slaughter age (45 days). Diet dilution with rice hull at 20 and 25 percent decreased feed consumption and improved feed efficiency and, therefore, its use can reduce feed cost.

Abstract

Planting density, through its impact on the level of available environmental factors may have significant impacts on grain yield in safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.). In order to investigate the impacts of plant density on grain yield, yield components and growth characteristics of safflower, a randomized complete block design field experiment with four replicates was conducted in spring-summer, 2000, at Lavark Research Farm (Lat. 320 32, N and Long. 510 23, E), College of Agriculture, Isfahan University of Technology, Isfahan, Iran. Arak-2811 and Kouseh safflower genotypes were seeded at 16.6, 22.2, 33.3 and 50 plants/m2. For establishing these plant densities, plants were seeded in 12, 9, 6 and 4 cm distances, respectively, on ten 8-m-long rows spaced 50 cm apart in each plot. Plant density had no impact on plant growth stages with the exception of button formation. Genotype had significant effects on days to seedling emergence, button formation, and 50% flowering. While both number of days and accumulated growing degree-days for all growth stages decreased with an increase in plant density, Arak-2811 was earlier than Kouseh for most growth stages. Number of branches and heads per plant, number of heads per branch, number of seeds per head and harvest index showed significant decreases with increasing plant density. The decrease in the mentioned grain yield attributes was mainly negated by greater number of plants per m2, leading to no significant variation in grain yield between plant densities of the two genotypes. Arak-2811 produced a significantly greater number of heads per branch and 1000-grain weight however, these differences did not lead to any greater grain yield compared to Kousehdue, mainly due to the greater number of branches in the latter. Neither of the leaf area index, leaf area duration, and crop growth rate varied significantly with plant density and between two genotypes, suggesting no difference in dry matter production capabilities of the two genotypes under environmental conditions of the present study.

Abstract

Planting pattern through changing vegetative growth and utilization of environmental resourses affects yield components and seed yield. These effects were studied in the spring of 2000 at the Agricultural Research Station, Isfahan University of Technology, using a randomized complete block design with a split plot layout and three replications. Main plots consisted of three row distances (30 cm flat, and 45 and 60 cm on bed), and sub-plots included three planting densities (30, 40, and 50 plants m-2). The experiment was planted on March 13 using local safflower variety of Isfahan, named Koseh. Increase in row distance and plant density enhanced most developmental stages of safflower. Leaf area index was not significantly affected by row distance but increased as planting density increased. Up to the 50% flowering stage, 30 cm row distance produced highest plant dry weight, but had the least dry weight at the end of the growing season, probably due to the strong shedding of leaves. Up to the end of flowering stage, 50 plants m-2 treatment produced the highest plant dry weight, but ranked lower as compared to 30 plants m-2 treatment at the physiological maturity, probably due to the shedding of leaves. Row distance had no significant effect on number of branches per plant and per square meter, number of heads per branch, number of seeds per head, 1000-seed weight and harvest index. But number of heads per plant and per square meter as well as seed yield per plant and per square meter significantly decreased as planting distance increased. Plant density had no significant effect on number of branches per plant, number of heads per square meter, number of seeds per head, 1000-seed weight and seed yield. Increase in planting density increased number of branches per square meter, but reduced number of heads per branch and per plant, seed yield per plant and harvest index. The highest seed yield (4769 kg ha-1) was obtained with 30 cm row distance and 40 plants m-2 treatment. On average, 397 kg ha-1 petal was harvested, which has a large economic value. However, petal clipping, over all treatments, reduced seed yield by about 7.4%. Considering the advantages of uniform distribution of plants and adaptation of safflower to flat planting, 30 cm row distance with 40 plants m-2 might be appropriate for planting safflower under conditions similar to this experiment.

Abstract

Azospirillum brasilense is one of the N2-fixing microorganisms which, in symbiosis with the roots of cereals and other graminae, enhances growth and development of plants. In this research, wheat seeds (Triticum aestivum) of three cultivars (Ghods, Roshan and Omid) were inoculated with Azospirillum strains (Sp7 and Dol). Inoculation increased growth parameters and yield of wheat cultivars, the effect being directly dependent on the strain-cultivar combination. Strain Sp7 induced the greatest grain yield, 1000-seed weight, number of grains per spike, root and shoot dry weight in Cv. Roshan, whereas strain Dol stimulated the best effect on these growth parameters in Cv. Ghods. The response of Cv. Omid was lower as compared to the other cultivars. Thus, it may be concluded that compatible strains are necessary for increasing yield and enhancing growth and development of wheat cultivars. These experiments also illustrated similar results regarding the effect of strains on N content of seeds. The observation of nitrogenase activity of Azospirillum strains in the In vitro experiments and the significant increases in N content in some inoculated cultivars support the hypothesis that biological nitrogen fixation by Azospirillum could be responsible for the observed beneficial effects on growth parameters. The comparison of nitrogenase activity of two strains showed that acetylene reduction rate for strain Dol was 1.5 times more than that for strain Sp7. Also strain Dol had more pronounced effects on growth parameters, yield and N content of grains than did strain Sp7. Strain Dol is a local strain whereas strain Sp7 is a Brazilian isolate thus, it may be concluded that the local isolates should be preferred to the foreign bacteria, as they are better suited to traditional cultivars, environment and soil conditions of the region.

Abstract

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of intensity of restricted early feed and increased nutrient density after restriction period on performance and compensatory growth in broilers. Two hundred and eighty-eight broiler (Lohman) chicks in a completely randomized design in a 2*3 factorial arrangement of treatments were employed. Birds were fully fed from 7 to 13d or 100% of adlibitum intake on a daily basis. The diets were diluted at 25% and 50% levels with rice hulls. After the restriction period, birds were fed with a diet, formulated to meet all their nutrient needs, according to the NRC (1994) or 10% of protein, methionine and lysine above NRC in the realimentation diet from 13 to 21d. Body weight, feed intake, daily gain and feed conversion were determined weekly and selected carcass characteristics (liver, intestine and abdominal fat pad) were measured at 49 days of age. Feed restriction significantly (P<0.01) decreased body weight gain and feed conversion during the restriction period. Birds were able to fully recover body weight depression up to 49d. The intensity of restriction had no effect on body weight, feed intake, daily gain and feed efficiency at 49d (p>0.05). Increased nutrient density had no effect on growth rate, feed intake and feed efficiency for fully-fed birds and restricted birds at 49d. The results from this experiment showed that broiler chicks may be expected to gain weight similar to chicks with fully feeding even after restricted early feed if fed with NRC diets. The effect may be due to compensatory growth.

Abstract

Watermelon (Citrullus Lanatus) cv. Charleston Gray is one of the most important cultivars grown in Iran. It has some good quantitative and qualitative characteristics but unfortunately is sensitive to Blossom End rot. To solve this problem, this experiment was conducted in a factorial manner in randomized complete block design with four replications in Research Station and Laboratories of Department of Horticulture, College of Agriculture, the University of Tehran, during 1997 & 1998. In this experiment, black polyethylene mulch was used and calcium nitrate was foliar sprayed at concentrations of 0, 4, and 6 g/L. Results indicated that mulch could increase yield by 85% over two years due to weed growth suppression and conserving soil moisture for a longer time. Foliage fresh weight, number and average weight of fruits per plant and precocity were also significantly affected by black polyethylene mulch. Furthermore, mulch reduced the number and weight of fruits affected by Blossom End rot by about 13% and 12.5% (average of two years), respectively. Calcium nitrate addition during both years had no significant effect on the measured fruit characteristics nor on Blossom End rot.

Abstract

To determine the effects of salinity and boron excess in irrigation water on relative growth rate (RGR), net assimilation rate on a leaf weight basis (NAR), and leaf weight ratio (LWR) of pistachio, three pistachio rootstocks (Badami -Zarand, Sarakhs and Ghazvini) were used. Rootstocks were grown in soil in eight-liter polyethylene pots. Sodium chloride treatments were 0, 75,150 and 225 mM NaCl and boron treatments were 0, 20 and 40mg liter-1. Treatments were applied to the one-year old pistachio rootstock seedlings in three-day intervals with irrigation water. Some plants were randomly selected and destructively harvested before (day 0) and after applying treatments (30 and 60 days after treatments started). Growth and physiological characters were then measured as follows: number of leaves, leaf area, plant height and root length, fresh and dry weights of stem, root and leaf, proline accumulation in the leaf, total chlorophyll, and leaf relative water content (RWC). Results indicated that relative growth rate decreased with time for all treatments and in all rootstocks. Salt treatment significantly reduced both RGR and NAR, whereas LWR showed no significant differences. In all rootstocks, NAR, but not LWR, was significantly correlated with RGR, indicating that NAR was an important factor underlying the salinity-induced differences in RGR among the pistachio rootstocks. Salinity did not affect leaf water potential (ψ), chlorophyll content, and Fv:Fm ratio but increased NaCl concentration and time correspondingly increased proline accumulation in leaves. In addition, Ghazvini rootstock accumulated more proline compared to other rootstocks and was more resistant to salinity treatments. Different boron treatments did not show any significant effect on growth rate nor on measured parameters after two months of exposure to treatments.

Abstract

A field experiment was conducted in 2000 at the Agricultural Research Station, Isfahan University of Technology, to model the response of four safflower genotypes to day length and temperature changes under field conditions. Five planting dates (March 12, April 12, May 10, June 8, and July 12) and four safflower genotypes (Arak 2811, local variety Koseh, Nebraska 10 and Varamin 295) were evaluated using a randomized complete block design with split-plot layout in three replications. Date of planting was considered as the main plot and cultivars were randomized in the sub-plots. Number of days from planting (P) to emergence (E), stem elongation (SE) to head visible (HV), and HV to flowering initiation (FI) significantly reduced with delay in planting as the result of increase in temperature during these periods. Number of days from P to SE, duration of flowering (DF) and termination of flowering (TF) to physiological maturity (PM) were significantly affected by planting date and reduced as day length increased. The same was observed in the case of number of days from P to 50% flowering (MF) and to PM. Large co-variation of day length with temperature may explain a portion of day length contribution to the variation in the above periods. Varamin 295 was later than other genotypes with respect to the duration from P to HV, and specially, for rosette duration. In addition and for unknown reasons, the rate of development (RD) of Varamin 295 at all developmental periods could not be explained by day length and/or temperature variables. Among other genotypes, Koseh with 125 days, and Nebrska 10 with 118 days from P to PM were the latest and the earliest genotypes, respectively. The response of Koseh to planting dates, as measured by the duration of various developmental stages, differed from Arak 2811 and Nebraska 10. This was attributed to the probable response of Koseh to day length. RD of Koseh, Arak 2811, and Nebraska 10 during P to MF was explained by a linear regression and RD of Koseh during P to PM by a polynomial regression with day length by mean temperature as an independent variable. RD of Arak 2811 and Nebraska 10 during P to PM was explained by minimum temperature. It seems that partial sensitivity of Koseh to day length has a considerable significance in its adaptation to environmental conditions prevailing in the summer under Isfahan climatic conditions.

Abstract

To evaluate the effect of broiler growth rate and feed intake on development of the inflammatory response‚ commercial broiler diets were fed to 275 day–old chicks of the modern 2000 strain and 1957 random-bred strain. Half of the chicks had free access to feed while others were restricted. Twelve birds from each strain and group pens were removed‚ weighed, and housed in individual cages by their original feeding programs on 0‚ 7‚ 14, and 28 days. Three feed-restricted and three ad libitum birds from each strain were injected with 1-3 ml of 100 μg/ml solution of Salmonella typhimurium lipopolysaccharide on days 6‚ 13‚ 27‚ and 41, and 3 birds of each group were not injected‚ serving as controls. All birds were weighed and the liver‚ breast muscle‚ thymus gastro intestinal tract and bursa were removed on the day after injection. The thymocytes of the control birds were subjected to an interleukin–1 responsiveness assay. The 1957 strain birds were more severely affected by an inflammatory challenge going almost completely off feed‚ but the 2000 strain birds experienced a more drastic decline in growth rate after injection. Thymocytes of ad libitum birds were more sensitive to IL-1 than the restricted birds in week 4 (P=0.056). Interleukin-1 stimulated thymocytes of 2000 birds more effectively than the 1957 strain ones. In conclusion‚ the broiler inflammatory response was affected by growth rate and feed intake.
