Abstract
Due to physiography and weak structure, the pasture soils in Boroojen are potentially degradable. Converting pastures to agricultural land accelerates the degradation processes. A study was conducted in 1999 to show the effects of almost 20 years of farming on originally pasture land on soil physical properties, fertility, and tilth index of pastures in Boroojen region in Chahar Mahal and Bakhtiari Province (central Zagrous). Soil texture, clay content, bulk density, organic matter, saturation moisture percent, cone index, plasticity index, mean weight diameter and aggregate size and distribution, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium were measured.
After 20 years of cultivation, bulk density increased about 20% while organic matter decreased by 30%. Cone index was lower in the undisturbed pasture but nitrogen and phosphorus contents were higher compared to the disturbed pasture. The undisturbed pasture contained more larger (> 1 mm) aggregates, while the disturbed pasture had more smaller aggregates. Sustainable use of natural resources will lead to their long term workability, while negligence of conservational practices including appropriate farming management practices will result in the destruction of these resources.

Abstract
Iran, as the biggest producer of dates, has 25 percent of the world date production. More than 400 varieties of dates have been identified in Iran. Dates have a high nutritional value they contain considerable amounts of sugar, vitamins and minerals. For instance, 2830 kilocalories of energy are obtained from one kilogram of dates. Dates are economically suitable replacements for sugar in bee feeds. However, feeding bees with some varieties, which contain certain amounts of mannose and potassium, are harmful. This investigation was carried out in order to identify the most suitable variety of dates useful for bee feed and to determine its nutritional value as human food. In this study, the dominant varieties of date including Bam Mazafati, Behbahan Kabkab, Booshehr Kabkab, Jiroft Mazafati, Kangoroad, Khanizi, Khasi, Saameran, Shahani, Shahdadi and Zahedi, were collected and analysed. The amounts of moisture, fat, protein, ash, and minerals such as sodium, potassium, and calcium were determined. Also, sugar composition of the above varieties consisting of glucose, fructose and sucrose, was measured. Chemical methods (Lane-Eynon and Shaffer-Somogyi) and high performance liquid chromatography were used for sugar determination.
The results showed that, except for moisture and protein contents, there was no significant difference between fat and ash contents of the samples. Shahdadi and Zahedi had the highest and lowest moisture contents, respectively. Behbahan Kabkab and Shahdadi had the highest and lowest protein contents respectively. Jiroft Mazafati and Saameran had significantly the lowest amounts of potassium and mannose, respectively, while Kangoroad had significantly the highest amount of sucrose, which is use full for bees. Therefore, these three varieties were found to be suitable replacements for sugar in bee feeds, but considering their price, Saameran is recommended as the best feed for bees. On the other hand, with respect to the minerals and sugar contents, Behbahan Kabkab was found as the most nutritious date for human food.

Abstract
Small honeybee (Apis florea) is one of the common species in Iran. Apis florea lives in southern Iran and plays an important role in the polination of plants in this region. In a series of studies during the years 1997-1998, the genetic populations of the Iranian small honeybee and the effects of geographic and climatic conditions on the morphological variation and separation of Iranian small honeybee were investigated. For this purpose, 400 samples of worker bees from 40 colonies from 26 cities in 9 provinces were collected and twelve morphological characters were measured, using Ruttner method (1978). To determine geographical and climatological variables, average values collected by synoptic stations and other meteorological stations of Iran Meteorological Organization were used. The principal components analysis was used in the statistical analysis of the data obtained. The results show that there exist two distinct groups of small honeybee populations in Iran. Southwest of Iran hosts a class of bigger bees forming one distinct group while southeast of Iran hosts smaller bees forming the second group. Latitude has a positive correlation with size of body, wings and legs. Amount of precipitation has a nagative correlation with size of body, wings and legs. Temperature, wind speed. relative humidity, freezing days and other parameters did not show any correlations with size of body. The results from this research proved that the more northern areas with higher altitudes and more precipitation have bigger honeybees. This finding is in accordance with the Bergman law about other animals.

Abstract
Point data of weather stations are not important in and by themselves. Therefore, it is necessary to change these point data into regional information. Undesirable distribution of weather stations and their data deficiency hinder the direct determination of the regional information, unless sufficient data in the study area could be provided. Providing extra data using the geostatistical methods is practical, scientific, simple and quick, but adopting a suitable method is the basic question. The objective of the present study is to find a suitable method to estimate monthly rainfall in the central region of Iran. In this regard, the methods of kriging (ordinary kriging, log-kriging, co-kriging), weighted moving average (WMA, with the power of 1 to 5), thin plate smoothing splines (TPSS, with the power of 2 and 3 and with covariable) were used. Cross validation technique was used to compare these methods.
Based on the variography analysis, the range of influence of monthly rainfall in the central region is about 450 km. The results show that TPSS, with the power of 2 and with elevation as a covariable, was the most accurate method to estimate monthly rainfall. In addition, it is preferable to use the selected interpolation method in the sub-basins with homogeneous climates instead of considering the whole region.

Abstract
The study of geographical extent of precipitation pattern is important because of its impact on agriculture, water resources, tourism, industry, dams, and irrigation. The principal component analysis (PCA), as an elegant mathematical tool, was applied for the regionalization of winter precipitation in central south Iran (Fars, Boushehr, and Kohgiloye and Boyerahmad Provinces). Averaging monthly rainfall data of Dey, Bahman and Esfand (20 December to 20 March) produced the time series of winter rainfall. In each individual station, correlation matrix of the normalized data was then performed for the computation of the standard PCA. Eigenvalues, eigenvectors, PC time series and the loading of the principal components were then computed. The Screet test technique was applied as a trial for addressing the problem of determining the number of PC modes that should be retained. Two of the first PCs, which account for 68.1% of total variance in the rainfall data, were kept and used for the regionalization of rainfall data. The rotation solution was then selected as a suitable tool for delineating the rainfall region associated with the retained PCs.
The results indicated that for the first PC, loading became high over most part of the study area. Therefore, the time series of PC1 that accounts for about 60.4% of the variance in raw data, could be used as the regional time series of winter rainfall over most parts of the provinces studied. The second PC revealed a high loading over a small area in northern part of the regions studied (Bavanat in Fars Province). Rainfall in this station showed poor correlation with the precipitation over the neighboring station in Fars Province. It seems that the rainfall in Bavanat is mostly influenced by the Mediterranean air masses entering the area through the northern and western districts. For the other parts of the regions studied, Sudan current which encroaches the country through southwestern borders (Persian Gulf regions) make up an essential portion of winter rainfall.

Abstract
An intense storm occurred on June 6, 1992 in Mashhad city and its suburb, which caused a flood in the residential areas of Najafi, Chahar-cheshmeh and Nodareh. As a consequence of the abnormally huge flood, 25 people lost their lives and many structures were destroyed. Three recording rain gages located in Mashhad city (airport, College of Agriculture, and Water Authority) and one in the suburbs (Toroq dam) recorded the temporal distribution of the storm. Twenty five other nearby rain gages in the region also recorded the event. The rainfall hyetographs and rainfall amounts were analyzed.
The results of this survey showed that: a) maximum rainfall intensity over a 15-minute duration in the College of Agriculture station, one of the centers of the storm, was 112 mm/hr, b) temporal distribution of rainfall for all recording stations were nearly the same, c) these patterns were in close agreement with all historic storms, and d) a return period of 380 years was implied via comparing the maximum rainfall intensity with relevant IDF curves. As a consequence, although an intense storm had happened, it was simply an outlier.

Abstract
Gypsiferous Aridisols are of great importance and extent in arid and semi-arid environments. There is a close relationship between soil genesis and landscape positions. This study aimed to determine the genesis and classification of gypsiferous soils and to investigate the relationship between micro-and macro-morphology of gypsum crystals and geomorphic positions in Rafsanjan area. The study area is located in Nough, 30 km north of Rafsanjan with a mean annual precipitation of 60 mm. Seven representative pedons were selected on different geomorphic positions. Physico-chemical, micromorphological, XRD, and SEM observations were performed on soil samples. Rock pediment geomorphic surfaces, that are in fact peripheries of old closed water bodies in central Iran, are the source of gypsum in the area. Large gypsum pendants and microforms of lenticular, vermiform, platy, and interlocked gypsum plates are found in rock pediment. The amount of gypsum and the size of pendants decrease moving down the slope. Lenticular and interlocked gypsum plates are found in a transition of pediment and playa. Puffy ground is observed on the saline surface of playa. Lenticular and vermiform gypsum crystals increase down the slope, but alabastrine gypsum is the most dominant form of gypsum in the playa surface. Large amounts of soft gypsum nodules are found on the rock pediment surface (western slope). In addition, spindle form of gypsum and palycrete bundles are observed in this position. Wind action played a significant role in the genesis and development of soil in rock pediment. A close relationship was found between morphology of gypsum crystals and geomorphic positions.

Kavir Biosphere Reserve covers an area of 686598 hectares situated in the northwest of Dasht-e-Kavir and east of Daryach-e-Namak. The Biosphere Reserve presents a variety of habitats, including cliffs and rocky outcrops, piedmont plains, gravelly, deserts and sand dunes, saline plains and salt marshes, and seasonal rivers and springs. The main aim of this research is to identify the plant species and to introduce of the flora in Kavir biosphere reserve. For this purpose, plant samples were collected from different habitats of the area in three growing seasons between 1994-1999. The life forms of species were determined and the biological spectrum of the area was plotted. The position of the area concerning phytogeographical classification was studied based on geographical data and references. A total number of 359 species and subspecific taxa was identified. These include 3 gymnosperms, 312 dicotyledones and 44 monocotyledones. Altogether, 43 families and 224 genera are known from the area. The following families have the highest number of species: Chenopodiaceae, Asteraceae, Brassicaceae, Poaceae, Boraginaceae, and Fabaceae. Therophytes with 198 species (55.1%) are the most frequent life forms in the area. The distribution of 245 species (68.3%) is restricted to Irano-Turanian region. Of these, 30 species (12.2 %) are endemics of Iran. . |

Abstract
In Iran, about 75% of national rice production is supplied in Gilan and Mazandaran proviences which have the highest amount of precipitation. Seasonal prediction of rainfall induces significant improvement on yield production and on preventing climate hazardz over these feritle areas. Canonical correlation analysis (CCA) model was carried out evaluates the possibility of the prediction of winter rainfall according to the states of ENSO events. The time series of (southern oscilation index (SOI) and SST (sea surface temperature) over Nino's area (Nino's SST) are used as the predictors, and precipitation in Bandar Anzali and Noushahr are used as the predictands. Emperical orthogonal functions (EOF) were applied for reducing the number of original predictors variables to fewer presumably essential orthogonal variables. Four modes of variations (EOF1, EOF2, EOF3, EOF4) which account for about 92% of total variance in predictors field were retained and the others were considered as noise. Based on the retained EOFs and precipitation time series, the canonical correlation analysis (CCA) was carried out to predict winter precipitation in Noushahr and Bandar Anzali.
The results indicated that the predictors considered account for about 45% of total variance in the rainfall time series. The correlation coefficents between the simulated and observed time series were significant at 5% significant level. For 70% of events the anomalies of observed and simulated values have the same sign indicating the ability of the model for reasonable prediction of above or below normal values of precipitation. For rainfall prediction, the role of Nino's SST (Nino4 in particular) was found to be around 10% more influential than SOI.

Abstract
Clay minerals deserve special attention as they play a crucial role in many soils. The clay mineralogy of five gypsiferous soils from different landforms in eastern Isfahan was investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD). In addition, soil aggregates and wind-deposited sediments were examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and analyzed by energy dispersive X-ray analyzer (EDX).
The results indicate the presence of palygorskite, mica, kaolinite, chlorite, and quartz with a trace amount of vermiculite and randomly interstratified layers in all soils. Smectite occurs in soils of both the piedmont plain and old river terrace, but not in the alluvial fan soils. Mica, chlorite, quartz, and kaolinite were probably inherited from the parent material. Palygorskite seems to increase with depth in the alluvial fan, whereas, in the old terrace soils, this clay mineral decreases with depth. Palygorskite present in alluvial fan soil appears to have been formed authigenically when the basin was covered with shallow hyper-saline lagoons toward the end of the Tertiary. Palygorskite in the old terrace seems to be mostly detrital and an eolian origin of palygorskite is likely because a large amount of palygorskite is present in upper soil horizons. A higher proportion of smectite in deep soils of the old terrace, as compared with palygorskite, suggests the possibility of authigenic formation of smectite from palygorskite.

Abstract
Rainfall intensity with different frequencies is needed for many hydrologic models. Rainfall intensity–duration–frequency relationships (IDF) have been investigated for different regions using previously recorded data. Iran Meteorological Organization has prepared IDF curves for 66 stations in Iran since which are the most updated data. Comprehensive IDF relationships were developed for these data. The results showed remarkable changes when compared with previous studies of Iran. This may be due to a change in parameters of probability distribution function as a result of increased record length of stations. Some relationships were also developed for ten year-hourly ( P6010) rainfall estimation from some parameters such as average annual rainfall and average maximum daily rainfall. Such a relationship was made for all stations and also for different classifications of regions (based on average annual rainfall and apparent climatically divisions). The validity of all relations was analyzed for eight independent stations with suitable spatial distribution. It was shown that all relationships are nearly valid as far as a suitable region is choosen. The previous relationship for Iran is not useful at present.

Abstract
Considering the population growth and limitation of expansion in cultivation areas, employment in non-agricultural jobs in rural areas is inevitable. The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors affecting the supply of labor of the rural families on non-agricultural jobs in the rural areas. A sample of 300 families from rural areas of the Ghoochan Township in 2000-2001 was studied. The data were collected through interviews and questionnaires. The analysis used a multivariable regression equation.
The results showed that: 1. The wage level of the non-agricultural experience of the person had positive effect on the supply of labors to non-agricultural jobs. 2. However, this effect was negative for the number of days the person worked on farm. Finally, since wages earned from non-agricultural jobs was higher than that of agricultural jobs. Therefore, it is suggested that for the purpose of increasing the income of rural people, non-agricultural jobs in rural areas be facilitated and encouraged

Abstract
The influence of the Sea Surface Temperatures (SSTs) on the seasonal precipitation over northern and southwestern parts of Iran was investigated. The warm, cold and base phases of the SSTs were defined and the median of precipitation during each of these phases (Rw, Rc and Rb, respectively) was determined. The magnitude of Rw/Rb, Rc/Rb and Rc/Rw were used as criteria for the assessment of the effects of the alternation of SST phases on seasonal precipitation. The results indicate that in association with cold SST phase, winter rainfall is above median over western and central parts of the coastal region, central and southern parts of Fars Province and all the stations studied in Khozestan Province. On the other hand, the prevalence of warm SST phase has caused about 20% decrease in winter precipitation over the Caspian Sea coastal area and northern parts of both Fars and Khozestan provinces. In association with warm SST phase in winter, precipitation during the following spring was found to be above normal for all the stations studied in the coastal region of the Caspian Sea. The highest sensitivity levels were found in Bandar- Anzali and Astara for which spring precipitation has increased by 80% due to the dominance of warm winter phase. However, the occurrence of boreal cold SST events causes shortage of precipitation in the eastern parts of the coastal areas along the Caspian Sea. A Possible Physical mechanisem justifying the influence of the Caspian Sea SST on the Precipitation variability was introduced. According to this mechanisem, temporal and spatial variability of the Siberian High is forced by the fluctuations in these SSTs.

Aqueous extraction of gum from flaxseed was optimized using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). In this study the effect of temperature (45-100 °C), pH (3-7) and water/seed ratio (4-24), on the dependent variables including: yield, protein and apparent viscosity of extracted gum were investigated. The results showed that temperature and pH are two major effective factors on yield and quality of extracted gum (purity and apparent viscosity), whereas water/seed ratio had minor effects. The optimized conditions of extraction were as follows: temperature 85- 90 oC pH 6.5- 7.0 and water/seed ratio 14. Apparent viscosities of extracted gums were determined and the effect of extraction conditions on rheological properties of flaxseed gum was investigated.

Representatives of fluorescent pseudomonad strains were assessed for their antagonistic activity against the blackleg of potato pathogen, Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. atrosepticum. Tested strains belonged mainly to Pseudomonas fluorescens Biovars III, IV and V and they could produce inhibition zone on PDA medium against P. c. subsp. atrosepticum ranging from 1.5-5.5cm. Six selected strains were used in two concentrations 107-109 and 1010-1012 colony forming units to control potato blackleg disease caused by P. c. subsp. atrosepticum under greenhouse conditions. Results showed that all strains applied could reduce the disease ranging from 46 to 71 percent. There was no significant difference among strains and their two concentrations under greenhouse conditions. Most of the strains applied increased potato fresh weight and all of them produced antibiotic and siderophore compounds in vitro.

Abstract
A number of researches have indicated a gradual increase in mean temperature throughout the world. Yet, there are some reports on the reduction of annual mean temperature. In this research we investigated a long-term trend of annual mean temperature in 34 synoptic stations in Iran (2 stations in cold and humid climates 14 in humid and moderate climates, 11 in Steppe climate and 7 in desert climate - following Kopen climatic division) with a minimum statistical record of 30 years by applying the minimum square-error and Man-Kendall methods (Wald-Wolfowitz method had a different result).
The results confirmed a positive trend in 59% stations, while 41 % of the stations were negative for the whole time-horizon of data. Considering the significance level, 3 zones of positive, negative, and no trends for annual mean temperature were detected in Iran. However, it was hard to define a specific spatial theme for such a division. By taking another approach, we proceeded with a shared statistical time period of 1968-1998 for all stations. In this case, 68% of the stations showed a positive trend, while the remaining 32% was negative. There were some shifts in direction from one trend to another in some of the stations in the study, yet no well-defined spatial structure was reported. In contrast, at 5% level of significance, 44, 15 and 41 percentages of the stations demonstrated positive, negative, and no trend for annual mean temperature, respectively. In general the behavior was different for different climates and no specific pattern was found. So, despite the fact that some stations did not show significant trends, one may hypothesize that more regions in future will experience higher temperature values and their positive trends would be a clue for future warming.

Plant parasitic nematodes of Dorylaimida occur only in the Longidoridae. Longidorus is one of important genera in this family, which it,s species are parasite on many plants and act as a vector for some of plant viruses. From 1999 to 2001, more than 250 soil samples were collected from several localities of Iran. Nematodes were extracted, fixed (De Grisse, 1969) and mounted on glass slides in dehydrated glycerine. Using a light microscope equipped with a drawing tube, morphological and anatomical characteristics of nematodes were studied, body parts were drawn, measurements were carried out and the species of nematodes were determined. Species were compared with the original descriptions and variations reported from other regions of the world. Differences and similarities of the species with main description and closely related species were discussed. Three species, Longidorus africanus, L. iranicus and L. pisi were identified the latter species is first record for Iran. L. africanus were mainly occurred in southern regions while L.iranicus were mostly found in northern areas.

Abstract
Range suitability and its grazing capability are the most important criteria in rangeland analysis and monitoring. Determination and monitoring of factors affecting on range suitability and diagnosis of them are important .All range ecosystem components affect range suitability. Which among them physical and vegetational factors, forage production, water resources and sensitivity to erosion were considered. The objective of this research was to determine range suitability of Lar, Dasht bakan, Ardestan, Siahrood rangelands to design a model for sheep grazing. This study was carried out in four regions, two of them (Siahrood and Lar) located in Alborz mountain chain, Ardestan in center of Iran and Dashtbakan in Zagros mountain chain. According to the results among physical factors, slope remoteness of watering points and sensitivity to erosion had more effect on grazing capability than vegetation factors. In Siahrood watershed aboundancy of poisonous plants, high slope, transient watering points and non resistant formations were limiting factors. High slope, sensitivity of soils and stones to erosion, kind of exploitation in Lar watershed affected range suitability. In Ardestan watershed, low range productivity, presence of invader plants, erosion, remoteness of watering points are major limitation of range suitability. In Dasht Bakan factors including slope, elevation, dispersion of water resources and transient water resources were limited grazing capability. In land evaluation each land utilization type has certain land use requirement and each land unit has certain land qualities. Utilization of rangeland based on grazing capacity, range readiness and recreation of degraded rangeland can improve suitability of rangelands in the studied areas.

Abstract
To carry out this study, total DNA was extracted from eggs and from second stage juveniles of several populations of Meloidogyne javanica and Meloidogyne incognita, using phenol / chloroform method. Following extraction, DNA was electrophoresed on 1% agarose gel to determine its quality and quantity. A specific primer pair (C2F3 / 1108 23 and 20 nucleotides, respectively) was used to discriminate M. javanica from M. incognita populations using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Primer annealing sites were located in the 3′ portion of mitochondrial gene encoding cytochrome oxidase subunit II (COII) and in the 16S rRNA gene. Following PCR amplification, electrophoresis of amplified DNA showed 1.7 kb fragment in populations of both species. Digestion of 1.7 kb amplified product with HinfI restriction endonuclease resulted in the generation of two DNA fragments of 0.7 and 1.0 kb in M. javanica and three DNA fragments of 0.3, 0.4 and 1.0 kb in M. incognita. There were no differences in the digestion patterns among various populations of each species examined.

Abstract
Genetic variation within and between five Iranian sheep populations including Sanjabi (SAN), Kordi Kordistan (KKO), Kordi Khorasan (KKH), Mehraban (MEH) and Moghani (MOG) was assessed using six microsatellite markers (McMA2, McMA26, MAF64, OarAE64, OarCP26 and OarFCB304). The PCR reactions were successfully perfomed with all primers except OarAE64. All locus-population combinations were at Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium except McMA2 in MOG population (P<0.005). Polymorphism criteria showed that the five studied loci were polymorphic in all populations. The lowest DA genetic distance (0.234) was observed between KKH and KKO and the highest (0.388) between SAN and MOG populations. The dendrograms based on DA distances were drawn using unweighted pair-group method using an arithmetic average (UPGMA) and neighbor-joining (NJ) method. KKO, KKH and SAN were grouped together at one cluster and MEH and MOG at another by both methods. The average expected heterozygosity for each populations (as interpopulation variation) ranged from 0.744 to 0.847 for KKH and MEH, respectively. The estimated time of divergence for two Kordi populations (KKO and KKH) was 445 years that complies with historical evidences. The findings of this research confirmed that microsatellite variation could be a useful tool for screening of investigating biodiversity among domestic animals.
