Abstract

Today, the production of disease-free and identical rootstock seedling in protected environments is a common practice in citrus industry. The process is time consuming, laborious and expensive. Shortening the period to reach suitable size for budding results in the reduction of the costs. It is possible to shorten the period for budding in citrus seedlings through the application of growth regulators. As lime is used widely as a rootstock in Southern Iran, this research attempted to study the effect of paclobutrozol (PP333), ethephon and pinching following gibberellic acid (GA3) treatment on height, diameter and budtake of lime seedlings. To do the research, seedlings with 4-6 leaves were sprayed with 100 mg/L GA3. After GA3 treatment, uniform seedlings 50 cm height were selected, potted and sprayed with PP333 (500 and 1000 mg/L), ethephon (150 and 300 mg/L) or pinched. All treatments, compared with control, increased height, diameter and fresh weight of shoot significantly. GA3 alone caused internode elongation. The effect of all treatments on the number of node, fresh and dry weights of root was not significant. Ethephon reduced chlorophyll content of leaf. And ethephon (300 mg/L) and PP333 (1000 mg/L) reduced budtake percentage of lime seedlings.

Abstract

In this investigation, the effect of seed source on the germination and survival of Acer velutinum Boiss. was assessed. Seeds were collected from 11 seed sources ( located at 20 to 2200 meter a.s.l in Mazandaran forests) and planted in a mountain nursery (Orimelk located at 1550 meter a.s.l) as completely randomized block design with three replications. The results show that the effect of seed source on germination and survival was statistically significant (p<0.01). Germination and survival rates were lower for the Pasands, Ashak and Deis sources, and the maximum seed germination was related to Lamzer site. Effect of seed sources on survival of seedling was significant too. The maximum and minimum survival was related to Lajim and Ashak, respectively. Regarding plan table seedling, the effect of seed source was significant. The maximum efficiency of seedlings has been found in Lajim, Lamzer, Parke Noor and Sangdeh sites, while the minimum range of efficiency was related to Ashak and Pasand2.

Abstract

In order to investigate the success of natural regeneration and to determine the best area for regeneration settlement, 12 gaps with the areas ranging from 50-100, 150-300, and 400-600 m2 and 4 replicates equal elevation level were selected. For measuring frequency, height, and collar diameter of regenerated seedlings, a certain number of 2 m2 subplots were carried out inside the gaps, along the bigger diameter, and related to each gap’s area. Results showed that the number of seedling varies from 5 (in big gaps) up to 28 (in small and moderate gaps) per square meter. Furthermore, there was not a significant difference between the number of seedlings in small and moderate gaps. In contrast, the number of seedlings in small and moderate gaps was significantly different from those in large gaps (at 1% Probability). This finding demonstrates that natural regeneration would be limited in large gaps (400-600 m2) but it shows a better result in smaller gaps, associated with single- tree harvests. The final result of this study shows that the most appropriate area for selective cuting in such an area is up to at most 300 m2.

Abstract

In order to predict Caucasian maple (Acer velutinum Boiss. ) seedling growth based on nursery Orimel, Eighty six one year old seedlings located at 1550 meters above sea level in Sari, north of Iran were randomly selected. Collar diameter, height, leaf area, photosynthesis area and leaf area/leaf weight ratio were determined. Then multivariate regression models between leaf characteristics and growth characteristic were drawn. The results indicated that number of leaves and photosynthesis area can estimate the height growth of a seedling. Also, mentioned characteristics of leaf can estimate the biomass of stem as a well as growth characteristics. According to the correlation between growth characteristics and leaf characteristics, it would be concluded that the photosynthesis area of leaf can be suitable for early selection of seedling for reforestation. Also, this result shows the importance of increasing the establishment and growth of maple seedlings in plantation areas.

Abstract

Soil salinity is an increasing environmental stress on crops in most areas of Iran since farmers use underground saline water for irrigation. In order to investigate the effects of salt stress on germination and seedling growth of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.), an experiment was conducted at two stages (germination seedling growth), using four levels of NaCl salinity (0, 5, 10, 15 ds/m), and four cultivars of spiny and non-spiny safflower ( a landrace from Isfahan bred cultivars of IL, LRV and PI). The design was factorial and completely randomized based on 3- replicates (CRD). Germination percentage, germination velocity index, root and shoot length, root and shoot dry weight, root to shoot dry weight ratio and salt tolerance index were measured at germination stage. In seedling growth stage, traits such as, stem length, number of leaves, chlorophyll index, root and shoot dry weight, root to shoot dry weight ratio and salt tolerance index were also measured. Results for both growth stages showed that salt stress decreased all the above mentioned traits, significantly, in all cultivars. Salinity × variety interaction at germination stage was also significant, compared to seedling growth stage. Salt tolerance index decreased significantly with increasing salinity at both stages, but differences between cultivars were not significant. Cultivars PI and IL were characterized as the tolerant ones at germination and seedling growth stages, respectively. It could be concluded that safflower cultivars responded differently to salinity in germination phase compared to seedling growth phase, and that safflower suffers more from salinity during germination stage.

Abstract

Trees decline is a complex physiological disease that results from the interactions between several factors, one of which is heavy metal stress that ultimately leads to the death of trees. This experiment, which was conducted during 2016-2017 at the campus facility of the Department of Horticulture at Isfahan University of Technology, was conducted to investigate the effects of inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) (Rhizophagus intraradices and Funneliformis mosseae inoculated, and the combination of both species) and plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), Pseudomonas Flourescens, on the growth responses of Arizona cypress (Cupressus arizonica G) to different concentrations of cadmium (0, 5, 10, 15, 20); this was done as a factorial experiment based on a completely randomized design, with three replications. The interactions between AMF, PGPR, and cadmium on potassium and iron concentration, height, and dry weight of Arizona cypress seedlings were significant. By increasing the concentration of cadmium in most of the treatments, the colonization, phosphorus, potassium and iron concentrations, height and dry weight of the shoot Arizona cypress seedlings were decreased, while the percentage of electrolyte leakage and proline content were increased. The AMF-inoculated plants increased phosphorus, potassium and iron concentrations, Height, shoot dry weight, proline content and reduced electrolyte leakage percentage, as compared to non-mycorrhizal (control) plants. In plants inoculated with both microorganism (mycorrhizal fungi and Pseudomonas), there was a positive effect regarding the concentration of nutrients such as potassium and iron; there was also the improvement of growth characteristics such as height and dry weight of the seedlings, as well as the appearance and freshness of the plant. The results, therefore, showed that inoculation of Arizona cypress seedlings with the combination of mycorrhizal fungi and Pseudomonas fluorescens bacteria could have a positive effect on the growth and survival of this tree under Cadmium stress condition.
