Abstract

High-yielding rice varieties are prevailing in Guilan Province which is one of the most important rice producing regions in Iran. However, little is known about K status in this region and no suitable extraction method can yet be introduced to the farmers. This experiment was carried out to determine the available K by 15 chemical extractants and also to examine the critical K levels in paddy soils of the region. The treatments included 23 soils and 2 K levels (0 and 300 mg/kg as KCl) in a factorial experiment in a randomized complete block design with three replications.

 Results indicated that K application increased grain and straw yields, K concentration in straw as well as K uptake by rice. High correlation coefficients were observed between MgOAc, H2SO4, Morgan and 0.01 M CaCl2 methods with K concentration in straw (0, 0.83, 0.78, 0.8 and 0.78, respectively) and with K concentration in plant tops (0.79, 0.76, 0.75 and 0.73, respectively). Similarly, high correlation coefficients were observed between the same extraction methods with K absorbed by straw (0.83, 0.82, 0.78 and 0.76, respectively) and with total plant K uptake (0.79, 0.83, 0.74 and 0.71, respectively). Potassium critical levels by different extracting solutions were determined by Cate-Nelson procedure and were 38, 74, 160, 111, 36, 112 and 100 mg kg-1 for MgOAc, Morgan and Kelowana methods, Texas method H2SO4 0.01 M CaCl2 and NH4OAc without and with submergence of soil samples, respectively. In this study, available K was below the critical level in almost 75% of the soils.

Abstract

Production and consumption of whole tomato and/or its products(tomato paste, tomato juice, ketchup, etc) is incearsed all over the world. Annual production of tomato in Iran is about 3.4 million tons (MT), part of that is processed in the tomato paste factorise, which are mostly located in khorasan province. Since tomato variety has a determinant effect on the physico-chemical and organo leptical properties/quality of tomato and its products, an investigation was performed to evaluate the impact of variety and storage time of four tomato varieties, Cal.j.n.3, Early Urbana Y, Early Urbana 111and Peto early C.H which were selected according to a national project and were monitored according to their brix, pH, Acidity, Sugar and Salt contents, total and non soluble solids. Results indicated that Early Urbana 111 and Peto early C.H contained the highest amounts of soluble solids along with the highest pH. Also it was evidenced that these varieties were the most stable varieties as the least compositional changes was seen in them.

Abstract

In the present study, the effects of sodium metabisulphite concentration (2, 4, 6, 8, 10%), dipping time (2.5, 5.0, 7.5, 10 min.) mixing of the solution including: continuous mixing , once per 2.5 minutes , once per 5.0 minutes and without mixing (I, II, III, IV) and pH of the solution (4.62, 3.62, 3.42) on the absorption of sulphure dioxide by halved Riogrande variety tomatoes prepared for sun drying were investigated. The experiment design was completely randomized plots with the order of 5, 4, 4 and 3 treatments, each with four replications. The results showed that increasing the solution concentrations, dipping time, mixing and decreasing pH increased the rate of SO2 absorptions. The increment of SO2 in tomato under the effect of the above mentioned factors have been shown in different tables and figures. The mathematical models of relationship among the rate of absorption of SO2 , the concentration of sodium metabisulfite solution, dipping time, also the effect of metabisulfite solution pH were developed. Significant differences were found in these increments in all the treatments (α= 0.01).

Abstract

Potassium is one of nutritional element that has an important effect on the quantity and quality of rice plant. Knowledge about the K critical level and plant response to different application rate of K, can effectively help with the proper use of this element. Therefore, in this study potassium (K) critical level for rice (Khazar variety) and prediction equation for grain yield were determined in 21 rice fields of Guilan provience during 2001-2002. After land preparation, 6 experimental plots (4×5m) were constructed in each selected field. Nitrogen and phosphorus were applied before transplanting, based on soil test from urea and triple superphosphate, respectively. Potassium was applied in different rates including 0, 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 kg ha-1 of K2O as muriate potassium. Khazar variety was transplanted in a space of 25×25cm, just after fertilizing of plots. Plots were harvested in 5 m2 at the end of maturity stage from the first node above the ground, and grain and straw were measured separately. Statistic analysis was done on grain weight based on 14% moisture. The results showed, that effect of different K fertilizer application in 5% and the effect of soil type in 1% were statistically significant on the grain yield. The mean increase of grain yield in responsive fields to K application was 982 kg ha-1. The results also showed that the responses of rice fields with available K less than 100 mg kg-1, 100-160, and more than 160 mg kg-1 to KCl application were high, moderate and low, respectively. Potassium critical level based on 90% relative yield was determined as 110 mg kg-1 of soil . In final relative yield, prediction equation, available potassium, potassium content of irrigation water, and rate of KCl fertilizer application entered positively in the equation, while available phosphorus showed negative effect on relative yield.

Abstract

The first Iranian hybrid monogerm cultivar of sugarbeet was developed in 2000 after an 8-year period of R&D activity. The cultivar is not only a high yielding variety but enjoys a good resistance to bolting and Sercospora. The study sought to estimate the rate of return to the public investment made to develop this variety, using the economic surplus approach. The results revealed that the investment has got an internal rate of return of 117 percent and that it has produced an exchange saving of $28.7 million. This finding indicates that the investment has been highly productive and that the field suffers underinvestment.

Abstract

The effects of Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) varieties, and sowing dates on weed interference were investigated in a 2-year (2002-3, and 2003-4 growing season) field experiment in Agricultural Research Station of Kohdasht in Lorestan Province. The experimental design was a randomized complete block in factorial arrangement with 3 replications. The experiment had 3 factors: weed interference at 2 levels (weed free, and weed infested throughout the total growing season), planting date at 3 levels (autumn, winter, and spring) and Chickpea varieties at 3 levels (ILC482, Hasham, and Greet). Weed density in autumn sowing plots was more than 3 and 7 times greater in autumn chickpea than in winter and spring sowing plots, respectively. Weed biomass in autumn sowing was 2.5 times as much as winter or spring sowing. Wild safflower and volunteer barley were the most frequent among the weed species. Volunteer barley was mainly present in autumn and winter planting dates. Wild safflower was among the weed species that in addition to competition, caused much difficulty to chickpea harvesting. Based on the hyperbolic curve fitted to the data, Chickpea maximum biomass reduction due to weed competition was estimated to be 91.8 %.

Abstract

In order to study and evaluate the drought stress indices in surface irrigation by furrow method on grain yield, the yield components and water use efficiency, an experiment was conducted at Behbahan Agricultural Research Station in 2014-16. The experiment was conducted as a split plot in a randomized complete block design with 4 replications. Irrigation at two levels (irrigation after 100 and 200 mm evaporation from Class A pan, respectively) was evaluated as the main factor and corn cultivar was considered at 6 levels as the sub-factor. Comparison of the  mean water use efficiency in irrigation and cultivar interactions showed 100 mm evaporation from Class A pan and cultivars V4 (PH1), V5 (PH3) and V2 (SC Mobin) were ranked the first and foremost, respectively, with the  yields of 1.353, 1.299 and 1.296 kg of corn per kg of water consumed, respectively. The mean water consumed in 2014 of the experiment in 100 and 200 mm evaporation from Class A pan was 521.2 and 462.4 mm, respectively. Pearson correlation coefficient results  also showed that with increasing the  yield components, such as the  number of grains per row and number of rows, the  1000-grain weight was  increased due to  the highly significant correlation coefficient of 1000-grain weight with grain yield (r = 0.8776).  Consequently, grain yield was also increased. The highest values of SSI, STI, MP, TOL, GMP HM and YI indices were calculated in V4 (PH1). The higher values of the above indices in cultivar V4 (PH1) than other cultivars caused this treatment to be introduced as the superior one. The decreasing trend of corn yield, which was caused by water deficit stress, increased SSI, STI, MP, TOL, GMP and YI indices, while it decreased corn yield, leading to incremental changes in the YSI indices.

Abstract

To investigate and evaluate the effects of different levels of drip irrigation on grain yield and yield components, oil yield, seed oil percentage, and seed water use efficiency, an experiment was performed at Behbahan Agricultural Research Station during two crop years 2018-19 and 2019-20. The experiment was conducted in split plots based on a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. The amount of water in tape drip irrigation was compared at four levels of 40, 60, 80, and 100% water requirement in main plots and two sesame cultivars Local of Behbahan and Shevin in subplots from the beginning of flowering. Comparison of mean interaction effects of irrigation levels and cultivars showed that the treatment of 100% water requirement in the Behbahan local cultivar with the yield of 1218.0 kg/ha was ranked first and foremost. Water consumption in the highest treatment (100% water requirement and Behbahan local cultivar) was calculated to be 5389.4 m3/ha. Treatments of 100% and 80% of water requirement in superior cultivar (local Behbahan) with water use efficiency of 0.226 and 0.210 kg/m3 had no significant difference, respectively, and were in the first place. Pearson correlation coefficient calculated for the measured traits showed that the highest correlation of water volume was calculated (r = 0.9271) with the weight of one thousand seeds. Significant correlations of water volume with grain yield and yield components indicated that sesame was susceptible to drought stress and attention to optimal water management in sesame cultivation. Therefore, decreasing the volume of water consumed and consequently drought stress in sesame reduced yield and yield components.
