Abstract

In this study, two different approaches of infiltration parameters estimation in traditional, variable and fixed alternate furrow irrigation, with and without cutback inflow, were performed and compared. Four usual methods including two-point (Elliott and Walker), Valiantzas one-point, Mailapalli one-point and Rodriguez and Martos optimization methods, as approaches based on advance data, and multilevel optimization method as an approach based on the advance, storage and recession data, were considered. Surface irrigation model: WinSRFR was used to simulate irrigation phases and infiltration value in each method. 13 furrow irrigation field experiments, from two case studies: Karaj and Urmia, were used to perform different methods. Based on the results, the multilevel optimization method predicted the advance and recession phases and runoff-infiltration with high accuracy for traditional, variable and fixed alternate furrow irrigation. The multilevel optimization method for traditional furrow irrigation, showed more accuracy than variable and fixed alternate furrow irrigation in advance and recession phases and the average root mean square error (RMSE) for predicting advance phase for the three furrow irrigation methods was 1.37, 1.8, and 1.57 minutes and for the recession phase was 3.76, 5.0, and 3.03 minutes, respectively. Also the multilevel optimization method for cutback options indicated high performance to advance and recession prediction and the average RMSE of advance and recession prediction were obtained 3.57 and 2.13 minutes for cutback option and 3.8 and 1.3 minutes for no cutback option, respectively. The multilevel optimization method indicated high performance in storage phase, too. The average of relative error (RE) of runoff estimation for traditional, variable and fixed alternate furrow irrigation was calculated 0.5, 0.4 and 0.4 percent, respectively. The runoff average RE of multilevel optimization method with cutback and no cutback option were obtained 1.85 and 0.85 percent, respectively; that showed high performance of this method for no cutback option in comparison with the cutback option. Therefore, the use of data of all irrigation phases to estimate infiltration parameters shows better performance in the prediction of irrigation and water balance components. Abstract

Basin irrigation is one of the conventional surface irrigation methods used to irrigate many crops all over the world. EDOBASIN, a new mathematical model for evaluation, design and optimal operation of basin irrigation has been introduced in this paper. In this model the linear combination of desired efficiencies are considered in an objective function, and based on decision variables that include discharge, length and width of basin and also restrictions of parameters, the optimal design is performed. This model is a simulation-optimization model in which the volume balance equations are used for hydrodynamic simulation and SA method are used for optimization steps. Optimization capabilities with various decision options and allowing weights to the indicators are good characteristics of this model. Comparison of advance time in this model with the well-known model SIRMOD for a real condition showed a good accuracy in the evaluation phase. In addition, the significant improvement of efficiencies after optimizing them simultaneously indicate that the model is an efficient tool for optimal design and use of this model for a data plot of an experimental field could enhance the efficiency of deep percolation ratio and application efficiency to 20% and keep constant the level of 100% for the efficiencies of water requirement and distribution uniformity.

Abstract

The objective of this research was the development of a hydraulic-economic simulation-optimization model for the design of basin irrigation. This model performed hydraulic simulation (design of basin irrigation), using Volume Balance model, economic simulation through calculating sum of four seasonal costs and optimization using NSGAII multi-objective meta-heuristic algorithm. For programming, MATLAB programming software was applied. The optimizations of functional, multi-dimensional, static, constraint, continuous, multi-objective and meta-heuristic were applied for the optimization of the objective functions. Decision variables selected from simulation inputs were calculated in such a way that the  hydraulic objective function (minimizing linear combination of seven performance indicators) and economic objective function (total seasonal cost based on sum of water cost, labor cost, basin preparing cost and channel drilling cost) were minimized. Data of one the experimental field was used for the purpose of simulation. After initial simulation, optimization of the experimental field was done using NSGAII multi-objective meta-heuristic algorithm with tuned parameters. Optimization using the suggested model shoed the decrease (improvement) of objective functions rather than initial simulation performance. As a result, the suggested model could be regarded as is a specialized tool for basin irrigation, showing a good performance, despite its simplicity.

Abstract

Proper estimation of soil water infiltration parameters and Manning roughness coefficient is one of the influential factors in the correct design and evaluation of surface irrigation systems. The EDOSIM model, as a surface irrigation simulation-optimization model, uses a combination of simulation with the Volume Balance model and meta-heuristic optimization. In the evaluation part of this model, the Elliott-Walker two-point method is used to estimate the parameters of the Kostiakov-Lewis infiltration equation. In this study, the Manning coefficient and parameters of the Kostiakov-Lewis infiltration equation were calibrated in furrow and border irrigation using observational advance data. This was done through three methods: Volume Balance model with constant shape coefficients (VB-CC), a combination of Volume Balance and Zero Inertia models (VB-ZI), and Volume Balance model with variable shape coefficients (VB-VC), using a total of 10 data series of border and furrow irrigation evaluation. Then, the ability to calibrate the infiltration parameters and roughness coefficient using a superior method was added to the EDOSIM model. The results showed that the VB-CC model had the best calibration accuracy and precision in 10 farms, according to the average statistical indices R2=0.998, NRMSE=2.4%, and MBE=-0.06. The VB-ZI and VB-VC methods underestimated the advance length even with calibrated values. The use of the VB-CC model instead of the Elliott-Walker two-point method in the EDOSIM model increased the accuracy of simulation and optimization by reducing (improving) the objective function from an average of 0.34 to 0.13 in border irrigation and from an average of 0.86 to 0.36 in furrow irrigation. Therefore, it is recommended to use the VB-CC calibration method in the EDOSIM model as a powerful tool for optimal operation of surface irrigation systems.
