Abstract

In this study, the effect of tool's advance velocity on the mechanical behavior of the Al-7075 alloy during friction stir welding was simulated. In this simulation, the Lagrangian method with rigid-Visco-plastic material was used. The results of the process temperature obtained by the simulation method were verified by the experimental welding test. Using the characteristic stress, strain and temperature relationships in the Al-7075 alloy, the changes and the relationship between the material strength during the welding process by simulation was studied. The generated simulation defects was verified by experimental test.

Abstract

Friction stir welding (FSW) was conducted on AISI 304 austenitic stainless steel plate with 2 mm thickness. The FSW was performed at a welding and rotational speeds of 50 mm/min and 400 rpm, respectively. Microstructure observations by the optical microscopy showed that a severe grain refinement occurred in the stir zone (SZ). Electron backscattered diffraction analysis (EBSD) results indicated that high fraction of low angle grain boundaries (LAGBs) developed in the thermo-mechanically affected zone (TMAZ) through the occurrence of the dynamic recovery. Moreover, in the path from the TMAZ towards the SZ, the fraction of high angle grain boundaries (HAGBs) increased with decreasing the fraction of LAGBs through the occurrence of continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX). 100 Pole figure showed the formation of shear texture components of A*1 and A*2 in the SZ which implied the occurrence of CDRX mechanism.

Abstract

In this study, corrosion behavior of Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy joint by friction stir welding with a rotational speed of 375 rpm and a travel speed of 100 mm/min was investigated. The welding procedure was carried out under β-transus temperature that was consisted of equiaxed grains in the stir zone. The corrosion behavior of the welded joint was investigated in 3.5% NaCl solution at temperatures of 25, 37 and 80 . Microstructure investigation of sample surfaces after electrochemical experiments was conducted using SEM. results revealed that the β phase was mainly corroded at all three testing temperatures, however the corrosion in the sample tested at 80 °C was more considerable.

Abstract


Today in addition to Join by friction stir welding, the composite fabrication process is also performed simultaneously. The main purpose of the present research is to investigate the effect of pin geometry on the property of Aluminum 6061- alumina nanocomposite created by friction stir welding. For this purpose friction stir welding was carried out by selecting five types of pin geometries on Aluminum 6061 in which Al2O3 particles were deposited and the samples were examined by tensile and hardness tests, optical and electron microscope. Samples were investigated by tensile and hardness test, optical and electronic microscopy. Regular hexagonal pins due to having six smooth face and impulsive movement during rotation, caused a good perturbation which resulted in maximum tensile strength and elongation percentage of 198 MPa and 10.25 and minimum grain size of 13.3 micron, respectively. In the sample welded by a threaded cylindrical pin due to non-impact during rotation, inappropriate flow of reinforcing particles and its accumulation at perturbation the lowest tensile strength and elongation percentage of 133.5 MPa and 1.95%, respectively, were observed.

Abstract

Friction stir welding (FSW) is an economic and high quality technique at aluminum welding and joining methods. The most important factor in the soundness of this type of welding, is the mechanism of material transfer in each tool rotation. The materials transfer during the welding process involves horizontal and vertical movement that caused by extrusion process and forging force (the tilt angle due to forging force and on the other hand, shape of pin due to the extrusion process). One of the most important parameters in FSW process is the effect of rotational speed in the welded zone. In this study, the effect of rotational speed at constant welding speed, in the butt joint of pure commercial aluminum, was investigated. The results of the study showed that, increasing the rotational speed due to increases the amount of material transfer in the weld zone. The welded zone was investigated by appearance weld zone experiments and using radiography tests. Also weld zone was investigated in macro and microstructure by using cross section. Then the micro hardness testing has been used by cross section at welded zone. In order to investigate the mechanism of materials transfer during the process, the electrical resistivity test has been used to analyses the amount of materials transfer in the weld zone. Results shows that, increasing rotational speed due to increasing the amount of materials transfer in the weld zone and decreasing the amount of defects in the weld zone.

Abstract

Friction stir welding was conducted on AISI 304 austenitic stainless steel sheet with dimensions of
100 mm × 100 mm × 2 mm. The FSW was performed at a welding speed of 150 mm/min and rotational speeds of 400 and 800 rpm. The results showed that high frequency of low angle grain boundaries (LAGBs) were formed through dynamic recovery in the thermo-mechanically affected zone (TMAZ). Higher amount of LAGBs were developed in the TMAZ of welded sample with 800 rpm due to the higher amount of strain and heat generated. High fraction of high angle grain boundaries were formed in the stir zone (SZ) of the welded samples through the occurrence of continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX). A very fine microstructure developed in the sampled welded with lower rotational speed. Analysis of texture using {111} Pole figures showed the formation of shear texture components in the SZ of both welded samples. The intensity of the obtained texture for the sample welded with 800 rpm was greater. The formation of shear texture components in the SZ of both samples implied the occurrence of CDRX mechanism

Abstract

Single phase brass strips with 2 mm thickness were severely deformed through 1 and 3 cycles of accumulative roll bonding process (ARB). ARB process effectively increased the hardness, yield strength, and the ultimate strength of the processed materials. The hardness of processed material increased from 95 HV in annealed material to 225 HV in 3 cycle ARBed material, and the yielding and ultimate strengths increased more than 5 and 2 times of the annealed sample, respectively. Friction stir welding (FSW) process was successfully conducted on the annealed and ARBed samples to investigate and compare the microstructure and the mechanical properties of the joints obtained in bead on plate configuration. Microstructural observations showed that very fine dynamically recrystallized grains developed in the stir zones (SZs) of all welded samples. Mechanical properties were evaluated by hardness and tensile testing. Hardness test for the ARBed and FS welded samples showed that the hardness value decreased by 110 Hv in the resultant SZs. Results of tensile testing revealed that yield and ultimate strength of the FS welded ARBed samples 1.3 and 1.8 times are greater than that of the annealed FS welded sample .

Abstract

In this study, the temperature in friction stir welding of duplex stainless steel has been investigated. At first, temperature estimation was modeled and estimated at different distances from the center of the stir zone by the multivariate Lagrangian function. Then, the linear extrapolation method and multiple linear regression method were used to estimate the temperature outside the range and center of the stir zone. Temperature estimation is based on three parameters rotational speed, welding speed and distance from the center of stir zone. In the first method, by generalizing the multivariate Lagrangian method, the multivariate Lagrangian temperature function was generalized according to the above parameters. In the second method, in order to investigate the effect of the variables in the regression model, a comparison of two complete models and a reduced model based on the sum of squares errors was used. Then, by analyzing the multiple regression equations governing the output variable, a multiple linear regression function was introduced. Since the temperature of the stir zone is not measurable by the thermocouple, so in general the best fit curve for estimating the function is when the modeling is based on parameters that minimize the error function.To implement the multiple linear regression method, the error function was introduced to minimize the sum of the error squares and the error derivative was calculated in relation to the parameters of tool rotation speed, welding speed and distance from the center of the stir zone. Therefore, multiple linear regression method was considered as the basic method and as a criterion with other methods. According to the results obtained from the prediction in the center of the stir zone, the temperature difference in all three methods is desirable and negligible. The maximum temperature difference of multiple linear regression method with multivariate Lagrangian method in all nodes was 18.8 oC and multiple linear regression method with linear extrapolation method was 26.36 oC. Therefore, the multivariate Lagrangian interpolation method is less different than the linear extrapolation method in the center of the stir zone and is more accurate.

Abstract

In this paper, the effects of welding parameters involving tool shape, title angle, rotational speed and welding speed on the S-shape defect formation have been investigated. For this purpose friction stir welding process were done on the Al-1085 plates by cylindrical, Triangle and square pins. The welded sections were studied by metallographic, radiography and SEM methods. The results showed that the S-shape defect was formed in the 1120 rpm, 1º title angle, 160mm/min welding condition. It is believed that the higher heat input in this welding condition with low welding speed would lead to more oxidation of Aluminum and so oxide particles formation. These oxide particles precipitate in a S shape pattern during the materials transfer between Advancing Side and Retreating Side sites which leads to S-shape defect formation.

Abstract

This present study aimed to create an Al6061-St52 dissimilar joint and investigate the effect of the transverse speed by the friction stir welding process. Welding aluminum to steel is rugged by fusion methods because of the formation of brittle intermetallic compounds (IMCs). Therefore, to designate optimal parameters, acceptable IMC thickness, and mechanical properties determined. This research carried out different three transverse speeds of 16, 40 and 85 mm/min (with a constant pin offset of 0.2 mm). Geometry of tool's pin radius and height is 4mm and 1.8mm, respectively. In the transverse speed parameter, the highest ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 200 MPa was obtained at 85 mm/min. According to the Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy results, an IMC layer formed in the joint interface. The heat input rate was calculated to designate the optimal parameters. In tensile specimens, fracture mainly occurred in the joints and within the aluminum stir zone due to the combination of thick IMC layer and steel fragments, respectively. The micro-hardness measurement results showed that at (85 mm/min) the hardness values were HV 75 in the aluminum stir zone and HV 315 in the AS vicinity of the interface region. This hardness value is much higher than the base metals (Aluminum base metal is an average of HV 53 and an average steel base metal of HV 245).

Abstract

The results showed that the microhardness and tensile strength of the heat-affected zone as the weakest welding zone in some samples reduced up to 30% compared to the base metal. On the other hand, a decrease in rotational speed, an increase in tool movement speed, and the number of welding passes cause grain refinement and improve mechanical properties. However, the effect of decreasing the rotation speed and increasing the tool movement speed were shown to be more favorable due to less heat production. Accordingly, the hardness in the welded zone with a rotational speed of 600 rpm and a movement of 80 mm/min increased from 90 to 125 HV  compared to the base metal, and the hardness reduction in the zones around the welded zone was only 5 Vickers. It was also found that reducing the grain size of the stir zone, while improving the mechanical properties leads to increasing the density of the surface pasive layer, preventing the attack of aggressive chlorine ions and thus reducing the corrosion intensity by 50 times in saline seawater.

Abstract

In this paper, using the Taguchi method, the parameters affecting the toughness of super duplex stainless steels in friction stir welding were optimized. In order to achieve optimal conditions, maximum toughness, the quality characteristic was used as the higher the better. Analysis of Taguchi results showed that in order to achieve optimal conditions in super duplex stainless steel weldments must have a tool rotational speed of 500 rpm, a welding speed of 60 mm / min, an initial pressure of 70 MPa and a tool tilt angle with the workpiece is equal to 3 degrees. Under optimal conditions, the toughness obtained from the confirmation test was 61 J, which was very close to the predicted toughness (58 J). Analysis of variance was also performed on the results of signal to noise (S/N) ratio. According to the results of analysis of variance, the tool rotational speed parameter with an influence percentage of 64% was the most effective parameter on toughness in friction stir welding of super duplex stainless steels. On the other hand, the parameters of welding speed (with an influence percentage of 17 %), initial 2 pressure (with an influence percentage of 16%) and tool tilt angle to the workpiece (with an influence percentage of 3%) were in the next ranks. Also, SEM micrographs from fracture surface of the samples in the impact test proved that the sample that had the least toughness in the impact test had a cleavage morphology and as a result, brittle fracture. This was while the morphology of the fracture surface of the tested sample under optimal conditions (with the highest toughness in this study = 61 J) had a large amount of fine and deep dimples. The presence of these dimples in large quantities indicated ductile fracture and eventually reaching the highest toughness.

Abstract

In this research, butt joining of Al2024 and Al7075 plates were performed by Friction Stir Welding (FSW) and the effect of tool position on microstructural and mechanical properties in about 1 mm from center line of joint towards the advancing side (AS) and the retreating side (RS) was investigated at three positions of +1, 0, -1 mm. In this regard, the plates of Al2024 and Al7075 were selected as the AS and the RS, respectively. In this joining method, transvers speed of 200 mm/min and tool rotation speed of 600 rpm were chosen. Macro- and Micro- structures of various welding areas and fractography of samples were evaluated by optical and scanning electron microscopies. In addition, mechanical properties were investigated using micro-hardness and tension tests. From the obtained macro-structures, it was observed that in all three joints, the surface of weld was without any defects (i.e., porosity, lack of penetration…). With varying tool offset position, welding micro-structure morphology was changed from homogeneous mode to layer or onion ring- shaped mode. Moreover, with varying tool position into the AS-side, tensile strength increased about 17.5% as opposed to the zero-tool position, but there was a decreasing about in tensile strength with changing tool position towards the RS-side as compared with the zero-tool position. Value of micro-hardness was approximately similar in all welded samples, but the highest value of hardness was observed at the weld zone (WZ). Thus, the obtained results showed that with varying tool position into the AS-side, mechanical properties were improved as opposed to the zero-tool position and tool position towards the RS-side.

Abstract

Conventional fusion welding of aluminum alloys results in coarse-grained structure, inevitable defects, and significant softening in the welding region. Friction stir welding with bobbin tool is a technique of friction stir welding method that has a great potential for developing applications of friction stir welding method in marine, aerospace, and automotive industries due to having an extra shoulder. Sheets of 5083 aluminum alloy with a thickness of 3 mm were welded using the bobbin tool friction stir welding method to assess the feasibility of similar joining. The effect of different process variables such as shoulder pinching gap, transverse speed and tool rotation speed was investigated. The results showed that a sound joint is achieved at a transverse speed of 13 mm / min and a tool rotation speed of 1350 rpm. The results of tensile test showed that the obtained joint efficiency is 94.5%, which is higher than the joint efficiency of fusion methods and comparable to the joint efficiency of conventional friction stir welding. Microscopic evaluation of the fracture surface of welded specimens showed that for similar joints, the dominant fracture mechanism is ductile fracture.

Abstract

In the present study, to resolve the problems in fusion welding methods as well as to increase the strength, FSW method was used to join aluminum alloy sheets 6061 and 2024. Moreover, optimal parameters for joining of these two alloys were also taken into consideration. Various tool rotation speeds of 565, 950 and 1500 rpm were selected. For each tool rotation speed, two traverse speed variables, two penetration depth variables, and two tool angle variables were specified. The analysis of mechanical properties of welded samples was conducted through tensile and micro-hardness tests. Furthermore, microstructure of welding zone was investigated using optical and electron microscopes. The ratio of shoulder diameter to pin diameter is among the most significant and practical factors for welding tools. So, a shoulder diameter three times larger than that of pin diameter was selected. In the present study, alloy 2024 was placed at the precursor as the harder alloy. Tensile strength and indentation hardness of optimal specimen 300 MPa and 85 HV were achieved. Moreover, hardness behavior and tensile strength of heat-affected zone (HAZ) was evaluated to be lower in alloy 6061 compared to other zones.

Abstract

In this study, thermo-mechanical stability of two-pass constrained groove pressing (CGP) AA1050 sheets towards friction stir welding (FSW) employing hybrid powder (%50vol. micrometric graphite powder+%50vol. α-Al2O3 nanoparticles) was investigated by examining its microstructural evolutions and mechanical properties. FSW was carried out via different process variables in order to reach the highest ultimate mechanical properties of joints. The welding variables employed in this study were single-pass and multi-pass FSW, and different rotation speed to traverse speed ratios (ω/v) were. In order to appraise the powder effect on mechanical properties in the fabricated hybrid metal matrix composite (HMMC), some CGPed sheets were also welded with no powder. Besides optical microscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) observations, Vickers microhardness and transverse tensile tests were conducted to examine mechanical properties of the weld zone. It was revealed that the effect of graphite powder as a solid lubricant was substantially influenced by the welding variables. More precisely, by employing graphite powder during the FSW, the peak temperature decreased to 224 , while the peak temperature of 489 was resulted by welding without any powder. Thus, the thermo-mechanical stability of CGPed aluminum and their mechanical properties were enhanced. On the other hand, graphite powder can be responsible for mechanical properties drop due to deteriorating material flow. In addition, different strengthening mechanisms, including grain boundary Zener-pinning and particulate stimulated nucleation (PSN) mechanism, were provided and governed by both powders. However, increasing the ω/v ratio was a practical approach to obtain uniform powder distribution, and consequently, to attain ultimate mechanical properties. Moreover, weld soundness was perceived to be achievable by increasing the number of FSW passes due to eliminating the cavities and improved material flow, resulting in an ultimate tensile strength of 101 MPa, as an optimum efficiency of ~ %80, in three-pass FSW at ω/v=70.

Abstract

In this research, friction stir welding of aluminum 1050 to copper with variable speed was investigated. For friction stir welding, rotational speeds of 900 and 1200 rpm and traverse speeds of 36, 63, and 125 mm/min were used. In order to check the phases and microstructure, scanning electron microscope analysis, X-ray spectrometry, and hardness testing were used. The disturbance zone included Al2Cu3, Al4Cu9, AlCu4, Al2Cu, and AlCu phases. The results showed that the formation of intermetallic phases and severe plastic deformation in the welding area caused an increase in hardness. The highest hardness value in the stirred area was 97.8 Vickers at a rotation speed of 900 rpm and an advance speed of 36 mm/min.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to investigate the change of rotational speed and traverse speed on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the joint in friction stir welding of aluminum 1050 and 316L stainless steel. For this purpose, the microstructure, thickness of intermetallic compounds, hardness and tensile test on the joint were investigated. The proper selection of welding parameters leads to the creation of a joint with suitable metallurgical and mechanical properties. In this research, two rotational speeds of 560 and 900 rpm and four traverse speeds of 60, 80, 100 and 125 mm/min were performed. The microstructure consisted of four areas of the base metal, heat affected zone, thermo-mechanical affected zone and stir zone. In all the samples, the stir zone (SZ) contained a recrystallization microstructure with fine equiaxed grains. According to the Energy dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy results, an IMC layer formed in the joint interface. The hardness of the stir zone in all samples was higher than the aluminum base metal due to the formation of recrystallization fine equiaxed grains and the presence of steel particles. The best sample in terms of mechanical properties, mocrostructure and joint quality was obtained in the conditions of rotation speed of 900 rpm and advance speed of 125 mm/min. The strength was equal to 84 MPa with 77% efficiency.

Abstract

In this study, the effect of friction stir welding (FSW) parameters on the dissimilar joint properties of 5083 aluminum alloys and 316L austenitic stainless steel, with a thickness of 4 mm, has been investigated. The tool speed was considered in the range of 16 to 25 mm/min, and the rotation of tool speed was considered to be equal to a constant speed of 250 rpm. To check the microstructure of different weld areas, optical and scanning electron microscopes were used, to check the mechanical properties, hardness and tensile tests were performed. The results showed the formation of a composite region consisting of steel reinforcement particles in the field of aluminum.
At the steel-aluminum interface, a single layer of discontinuous intermetallic composition with a thickness of about 2 micrometers was observed; Also, by choosing the rotation speed of 250 rpm and the tool speed of 16 mm/min, the tensile strength equal to 298 MPa and ductility of 26% (93% of tensile strength and 50% of ductility of aluminum 5083 alloy) were obtained.

Abstract

5xxx and 6xxx series alloys are among the most widely used aluminum alloys in various industries, including automobile, shipbuilding and aviation industries. In this research, the joint of two alloys AA6061-T6 and AA5052-H12 was investigated at 4 transmission speeds of 60, 90, 120 and 180 mm/min and 3 rotation speeds of 600, 800 and 1000 rpm. These investigations were carried out in the condition that each of the two alloys was placed in two progressive and regressive sides. The results of these studies showed that the highest tensile strength is when the AA5052 sample is placed on the advancing side and the transfer speed is 90 mm/min and the rotation speed is 600 rpm, and in this case, the final tensile strength value is equal to 197 MPa. In addition, the results showed that, generally, the tensile strength decreases with an increase in the transmission speed at a constant rotational speed, and with an increase in the rotational speed at a constant transmission speed, the tensile strength increases. In addition, microscopic and macroscopic examination of the sections of all samples was performed and various areas and defects were examined. According to the investigations carried out on the microstructure, the grain size in the weld nugget compared to the base metal, HAZ and TMAZ decreases. The grain size in HAZ is the largest in all samples, and this causes a decrease in weld strength in this zone.
